These play-by-plays are romanticized for dramatic effect but the results are legitimate, if the play-by-plays are too long or you don’t feel like reading them I’ll have a more brief summary of what happened plus the full card results at the bottom.

Donald Cerrone finally makes his return to the Lightweight division tonight after having his original return to the division against Alexander Hernandez canceled earlier in the year, coming in once again on short notice (3 weeks) the man they call 'Cowboy' faces down with another pupil of his former gym Jackson Wink MMA's Rustam Khabilov will look to defeat Cerrone after 'Cowboy' publicly embarrassed the gym after defeating Mike Perry via a 1st round submission after Cerrone left the Jackson Wink publically criticizing the gym after his departure bashing the coaching staff and mainly the founder of the gym Greg Jackson himself. Khabilov has stated "this is the most important fight" in his career so far as with a victory not only will he avenge the gyms lose to ‘Cowboy’ but it’ll skyrocket his name into the mainstream MMA media. Greg Jackson has predicted a 1st round TKO victory for Khabilov, whilst Cerrone sees this as a stepping-stone to eventually fight for the 155-pound Lightweight title in the words of Donald Cerrone "Cowboy's back!" so let's stop wasting time and get this fight started right here and now.

    Round 1

Cerrone throws out some straight strikes but most bounce off the shoulder or are absorbed by the guard of Khabilov, the Russian fires back but doesn't find the mark with a right hook. Cerrone doesn't connect with a right hand to the body as he tries to counter with more straight strikes but dosen’t set his feet properly whilst running at Khabilov. Setting it up with excellent timing, Khabilov comes forward and shoots for and gets the double-leg takedown Cerrone is on his back and pulls guard quickly locking up a guillotine once the fight hits the canvas!!! After a period of struggle, Khabilov pulls free as Cerrone didn't have it fully sunk in. Cerrone pulls Khabilov close and scores with a couple of short punches to the side of his head then starts hitting a few short elbows. Khabilov throws strikes from the top in retaliation after ‘Cowboy’ hits a fantastic elbow the slices open a cut over Khabilov’s right eye the Russian starts to lean back, preventing Cerrone from throwing any elbows to the top of the head. Eventually, Khabilov settles with having a stick-guard as he throws down some flying ground n’ pound to the body, with Khabilov having less control Cerrone attempts to scramble by attempting to push Khabilov away with his two feet as he rolls on his back to getaway!!! Khabilov reads this move perfectly and comes over the top to gain side control!!! Now it’s Cerrone’s time to eat a few elbows as now ‘Cowboy’ is opened up with some minors cuts around both of his eyes!!! Khabilov keeps the fight in side control until the round ends.

    Round 2

A jab lands from Khabilov, but Cerrone avoids a big right by tilting his head to the left then ‘Cowboy’ lands a counter left hand but doesn't hit the leg kick follow-up. The two fighters stare at each other whilst faking a few strikes as both are waiting for the other to make the first move, Cerrone strikes first connecting with a jab then feints a straight follow up to mask the right leg kick, but Khabilov avoids the kick by jumping out of range then jumping back in with a lead superman jab that lands on the forehead, still a little lose from the jumping Khabilov quickly throws three looping hooks that come up short which allows Cerrone lands a leg kick. Khabilov lands a left jab but doesn't connect with a right hand however, he closes distance well to grab the collar tie allowing the Russian to land a few short punches to the body then a bus driver uppercut that snaps Cerrone’s head up as they separated, Cerrone is able to land another leg kick in retaliation. That bus driver uppercut has seemed to waken up Cerrone who starts becoming the aggressor of the fight coming forward, walking down Khabilov as previously he was mostly on the backfoot. Khabilov hits a pair of jabs as Cerrone backs him up against the cage, Cerrone opens Khabilov up with a feint of his iconic head kick allowing ‘Cowboy’ to hit a couple of minor left hands, Cerrone then hits a left jab and then scores with a leg kick followed by a roundhouse kick to the body as Khabilov covers up against the cage. Cerrone grabs a hold of Khabilov landing a nice elbow right behind the left ear of Khabilov, then hits a few knees to the body. Khabilov threatens to reverse Cerrone with some excellent wrist control which forces Cerrone to disengage from the Muay-Thai clinch but he still has Khabilov trapped against the cage. Cerrone comes up short with a jab to the body, Khabilovcounters with a jab right on the nose of ‘Cowboy’. Cerrone comes up with an uppercut that is short but Cerrone comes in bliziting with three quick punches, landing two of them, but misses when he attempts a big head kick. With the kick missing Khabilov shoots in hard and fast with a blast double-leg the takedown is successful, Cerrone pulls guard!!! Cerrone did however grab a guillotine on the way down, and now threatens the submission!!! After a period of struggle Cerrone is able to fully apply the guillotine!!! Cerrone sweeps Khabilov as now ‘Cowboy’ is on top holding on tight with the guillotine!!! But Khabilov stubbornly holds on and does not tap!!! It looks like Khabilov is about to go out but miraculously Khabilov is able to escape!!! Cerrone on top transitions to side control then quickly locks in the armbar!!! Khabilov needn’t worry however as their is only seconds left in the round!!!

    Unofficial Scorecards:

    Round 3

Cerrone starts using a jab then leg kick combo keeping slightly out of range as ‘Cowboy’ starts to constantly land the leg kicks whilst most of the set-p jabs are too short, parried, or just grazes the Russian. Cerrone hits another set-up jab and then fakes a leg kick opening Khabilov to a hard right hand!!! Cerrone comes forward looking to unload some more firing off a roundhouse kick that lands to the body, Khabilov hits two left hands after blocking a left-hook to the body on the counter. A jab lands for ‘Cowboy’, but the following kick to the body is too slow as he starts showing some fatigue this allows Khabilov to catch it!!! Holding onto the leg Khabilov tries for a single-leg takedown but Khabilov also starts to show some fatigue as he looks slow whilst trying to out-grapple Cerrone. Unable to complete the takedown, Khabilov instead pushes Cerrone up against the cage landing some short punches to the face. Khabilov looks for a foot stomp but Cerrone works enough space that he can pull clear and circle out. ‘Cowboy’ starts chopping down the lead leg of after landing a multitude of them Cerrone goes to the body with a push kicks then a left hand, but his big right-hand follow-up misses as Khabilov blocks it then lands a check right hook that briefly gets Cerrone to back up as it slightly buckled him briefly. Cerrone connects with a nice jab and then catches Khabilov with a front kick to the face then a right hook whilst blitzing in. Cerrone throws 3 hooks in close landing 2 of them, Khabilov backs up hitting a pair of jabs but Cerrone responds landing a left hand and then he catches Khabilov with a right roundhouse kick to the body. Khabilov’s nose starts to bleed and his cut over his eye from round 1 is re-opened as the Russian is becoming a bloody mess plus his lead leg is turning purple!!! Cerrone lands a jab and then hits a straight right on the button!!! Cerrone taunts Khabilov to start throwing demanding a “barnburner”, Cerrone lands another jab but misses with a low kick. Khabilov uses this miss to hit a couple of jabs but has a right hand taken on the gloves. Cerrone counts with a lead elbow to the side of the forehead then lands a jab and a right cross!!! Khabilov slouches over covering up he’s hurt!!! Cerrone starts spamming hooks but Khabilov bobs and weaves past all of them as he uses this head movement to get in close and grab a hold of Cerrone!!! Khabilov gets hold of the body lock nearly tripping Cerrone to the ground but ‘Cowboy’ base stays steady as Khabilov settles for pushing him up against the cage. Whilst standing Khabilov surprises everyone by grabbing ahold of Cerrone’s back then get’s the backpack looking for the rear-naked choke!!! With only 20 seconds left Cerrone is in huge trouble as Khabilov successfully gets both hooks in as he gets the arm under the chin and starts to squeeze!!! Cerrone jumps up and slams Khabilov on the ground whilst Khabilov has a hold of his back hoping to loosen the hold!!! But with both hooks in and great control, Khabilov still has a hold of the choke!!! There’s only a couple of seconds left on the clock Cerrone is just trying to survive!!! He dosen’t he goes out with only 4 seconds left in the fight!!!

Rustam Khabilov raises his arms in victory in a spectacular come from behind victory he celebrates with his coaches at Jackson Wink MMA taking time to bask in this victory it clearly meant a lot to both him and his team!!!

What's not to love about both Edson Barboza and Justin Gaethje? Both have given UFC fans epic highlight-reel knockouts and fight of the year contenders over the course of their entire careers and for both with a victory will have them further climb up the 155-pound ladder into serious title contention. Both come into tonight on relatively short notice much like Donald Cerrone before them the original main-event for tonight was suppose to be a rematch between Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo Souza was canceled due to a serious elbow injury to Souza. Taking this fight on a few weeks notice both have admitted they'll be looking for an early 1st or 2nd round finish as they'll look for a quick finish tonight due to the short training camps on both ends.

    Round 1

Gaethje starts the fight landing a jab then unloads with a three-punch flurry landing them but misses with a low kick. Barboza counters with a hard jab and also connects with a thumping kick to the thigh. Gaethje feints a straight but misses baldy as Barboza pulls back then lands a jab and also lands a spin kick to the body the Brazilian then hits another jab followed by a spinning back kick to the ribs. Looking a bit tense, Gaethje starts hopping around light on his feet as he moves around the cage. After feinting a one-two Gaethje hits a straight-right however leaves his guard down causing Barboza to swing out a thunderous head kick that is just off the mark as Gaethje moves his head out of the way. Instead of counter-attacking Gaethje covers up as Barboza hits a two-punch combination, a quick left and a straight right then a nice leg kick that caused Gaethje left leg to wobble a little. Barboza scores with a jab but doesn't connect with a right hand up top. Gaethje lands a quick punch and then hits a left hook right to the liver!!! Barboza slouches over in pain as he makes his way to the cage. Gaethje fakes a flurry of punches before cracking Barboza with an overhand to the chin!!! Barboza looks punch-drunk!!! He’s in big trouble! He is covering up as best as he can!!! Gaethje goes under the guard and nails Barboza with a right uppercut then gets clocked with a right hand to the side of the head and goes down against the cage hard!!! Gaethje starts pounding away on Barboza, looking to finish him off!!! Gaethje fires away and Barboza is eating powerful shot after powerful shot until the referee pulls him off!!!

Justin Gaethje and Rustam Khabilov have validated themselves as top Lightweight contenders with impressive victories tonight, Gaethje after a slow start showed power and patience with his 1st round victory over Edson Barboza the Brazilian crowd, as well as Barboza himself, was devastated by the result with this being Barboza’s 3rd loss out of his last 5 fights he announced he would move down a weight-class to the Featherweight division after spending his entire UFC-venture so far at Lightweight he announced the move 5 days later on Twitter where he congratulated Gaethje for his win typing “You hit like a rocketship”. With his victory, Gaethje took the mic to call out fan favorites Dustin Poirier to a rematch and Nate Diaz the callouts had some serious bad intentions behind them to quote, “I fully believe I’m a better fighter than Dustin I was winning our first fight up until what I feel was a lucky punch he hit like a b**ch the entire fight then suddenly drops me with one, it’s the literal definition of a lucky punch if you ask me. I’d also like to drill a f**kin hole through Nate Diaz’s head he’s more a Twitter troll nowadays then an actual fighter”. Rustam Khabilov also had some harsh words whilst in victory proclaiming, “This whats right I feel this victory shows loyalty and kindness will forever defeat disloyalty and deception, me and my teammates over at Jackson Wink now exactly who Donald Cerrone is he isn’t a nice guy far from it very selfish this loss will help him become a better person hopefully”. Khabilov would have a huge afterparty with his Jackson Wink coaches and fellow teammates on the victory as Khabilov now eyes a top-10 ranked Lightweight contender. Cerrone in a post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani das after the evet said the loss has “driven me f**kin crazy” adding “he acts like I wasn’t kicking his ass up and down that octagon until he pulled off a fluke submission then he and Greg start talking about this is a victory for good? And characterize me as some bad guy? This isn’t a fairy tale but if your so insecure that you have to tell the fans and media your some knight in shining armor so be it but don’t say I’m the bad guy when we all know Greg you f**ked me over and many other fighters for years. You’re still doing it now and you’re running that gym which was once the best gym in MMA into the f**kin ground”. Cerrone has requested an immediate rematch but is open to other fights that interest him if offered. The rest of the main card was a BJJ enthusiast’s delight as 4 of 5 main card fights finished via submission.

Gilbert Bruns has bursted onto the top 15 at Welterweight dominating Yancy Medeiros the 1st round started slow Burns showed a lot of feints to start out whilst the two traded leg kicks for a majority of the round with a minute and a half left Burn’s got Medeiros to bite a feinting jab which opened him up to a devastating overhand to the right side of the forehead that instantly put Medeiros on his ass while he survived the 1st round he spent the rest of the fight in a defensive mode only really offering defensive jabs and leg kicks when he knew there was no way he could get caught again. Burn’s would march him down during the 2nd round getting him up against the cage smother him with Muay-Thai knees to the body plus some dirty boxing after successfully getting Medeiros to bite on another jab then overhand combo feint the Brazilian got the single-leg then in a scramble took the Hawaiians back where he eventually got the rear-naked choke. “Welterweight’s I’ve got next!!! Colby Covington, you talk so much trash about Brazil I’ll make you eat every single one of your words just watch me that belt is mine”. Burn’s told Jon Anik during his post-fight interview. James Krause and Virna Jandiroba got the exact same submission at the exact same time from nearly the exact same position in one of MMA’s most cartoonish and meme-worthy moments of the year. Both pulled of the guillotine after grabbing a hold of their opponents then immediately pulling guard to get the 1st round submission finish. Johnny Walker got his 1st win inside the UFC with a jaw-dropping knockout literally as he broke Bruno Cappelozza’s jaw with a straight-right on the chin which turned his lights out it was a beautiful knockout sequence as Walker used two front kicks to the body followed it up with a straight to the body then knocked Cappelozza with the straight-right to the chin as Cappelozza attempted to counter with an overhand multiple times but was just a few inches short every time.

Sheymon Moraes handed Dennis Bermudez his 5th straight loss in a very close split decision, Bermudez successfully got a takedown in every round going a successful 4 for 4 on the takedowns getting 2 in the final round he had a total of 7 minutes out of the total 15 minutes contested bout but on the feet, Moraes often got the better of Bermudez who spammed the jab-jab then overhand combo for most of the fight meanwhile Moraes had a much more versatile offensive game-plan implementing head kick plus bodywork his strikes generally had way more pop behind them although never able to quite find a strike on the chin that would put Bermudez out. It was a gusty and hard-fought fight most however scored it in favour of Bermudez to the tune of 29-28 or 30-27 but the judges scored a split decision that they gave to the Brazilian prospect Sheymon Moraes who improves to (3-1) inside the UFC in what some have called “a hometown decision”. Finally, two impressive performance of the night knockouts included Martin Buschkamp got an impressive finish over the previously (20-1) Chinese prospect Guan Wang to the surprise of many Buschkamp a BJJ black belt decided to go more a more stand-up heavy gameplan as the two exchanged in a kickboxing match-up for most of the fight with Wang having a nationally accomplished background in kickboxing it would be safe to assume he’d easily dominate the much more grappling heavy Buschkamp but to the surprise of everyone it was a close bout while it lasted. Wang was feinting and faking more but typically was a sniper landing one punch or kick then never following up with another after that he also made Buschkamp miss a lot as the Brazilians striking clearly wasn’t as technically sound but technicality didn’t matter as with a minute left in the 1st after ducking under an overhand Buschkamp would unleads a lethal lead elbow to the side of the forehead whilst Wang attempted to bring his head back up swinging out a straight the shot wobbled him then a follow-up flurry of hooks put him down with punches and elbows finishing him off on the ground. Jennifer Maia surprised everyone by putting on a striking clinic that’s right a striking clinic against Alex Davis, the improvements to Maia’s stand-up was quite shocking as she showed a great jab plus body punches not once did Maia a now BJJ black belt take the fight to the ground as Davis had nothing in response eventually a jab, jab, uppercut then feint a straight-right to throw an overhand combo put Davis out cold after the victory Maia credit the improvements in her striking to her coaches plus hard work she also called out UFC Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko to match-up later this year.
