Pancrase Hybrid Wrestlers 5: Road to the championship
PRELIMS RESULTS
Young Judoka Akihiro Gono scores what mkght be a big candidate for submission of the night, as he caps off his MMA debut with a spectacular triangle armbar submission win over Sanae Kikuta at 3:31.
Yuki Kondo will take a break from the sport to concentrate on his studies, but with a nasty cut above his eye courtesy of Satoshi Honma. Honma hit him with a nasty hook that busted Kondo open, which never really stopped bleeding, forcing the ringside doctor to stop the fight at 7:23.
MAIN CARD
The show opens with the opening ceremony introducing all the fighters that will compete in tonight's card, with CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara officially announcing the "King of Pancrase" tournament, to be held throughout 1995.

Frank Shamrock vs Alexander Otsuka
Otsuka suffered the first loss of his career at the hands of Kazushi Sakuraba, but impressed against him with his wrestling, while Frank Shamrock makes his real fighting debut after extensively training with his older brother Ken.
Otsuka welcomed Frank to the world of mixed martial arts with some takedown attempts, but Frank shows that he was well prepared with some good sprawls to stop the young freestyle wrestler. Otsuka did eventually take him down, but Frank was quick to scramble his way to a dominant position and forcing Otsuka to give up his back, which allowed Frank to slap on a beautifuo armbar for the submission win on his debut!
Frank Shamrock defeats Alexander Otsuka by submission via armbar at 3:23

Maurice Smith vs Guy Mezger
Former kickboxing world champion Maurice Smith takes on another pro kickboxer in thr debuting Guy Mezger, who trains in Ken Shamrock's dojo, the Lion's Den.
The first portion of the fight was all Mezger, for the houston native scored many big shots on Smith, including a big right hand that wobbled him bad! But Smith would somehow recover from this and take over in the second half, eluding Mezger with quick combinations and damaging his legs with devastating low kicks. With those low kicks, mezger had troubel doing feints, and as he sttempted a straight, Smith countered him with a devastating right head kick that sent him crashing donw the mat! Smith then pounded Mezger's ass until the referee stepped in to stop the fight!
Maurice Smith defeats Guy Mezger by knock out via high kick at 8:31vs

1 round, 15 minutes
Kazushi Sakuraba vs Marco Ruas
Sakuraba and Ruas went back and forth in this thriller! The two were evenly matched, with the smaller sakuraba even outwrestling the larger Ruas at several points of the match! But Ruas would smartly force Saku to stand up, which wirled to the Brazilian's advantage, as he used the muay thai clingh to ravage Sakuraba's face with knees. Yet, somehow, Saku fought back and ended the fight standing as time ran out.
The judges gave Ruas a debut win.
Marco Ruas defeats Kazushi Sakuraba by unanimous decision after 15 minutes.
1 round, 15 minutes
Hidehiko Yoshida vs Kazuyuki Fujita
The all japan judo champion come sout to a standing ovation, while Fujita, who represented japan in tbe amateur wrestling world cup, also got a good applause.
As expected, the fight took place mainly on the ground. Yoshida had top for much of the fight, with the larver fujita only getting a bit of offense sporadically. Yoshida then put an end to the fight with a nasty kimura to win it.

Kohsaka needed that win, and he went on to dismantle poor young Matsui's ground game to tiny bits, locking up an omoplata choke to submit him.

"El Guapo" Bas Rutten vs Kiyoshi Tamura
Rutten coming in with an even record following kosses to Minoru Suzuki and Masakatsu Funaki, while Tamura came out of a fight of the night performance against Tsuyoshi Kohsaka in his full time debut, and he also wished that, after this bout, that he faces one of the two Pancrase co-founders in the upcoming "King of Pancrase" tournament.
Rutten didn't care about Tamura's feelings, however, for he showed the young wrestler his improved ground game, showing good sprawl and some nice transitions that caught Tamura off guard! Tamura tried keeping it standing up with his thunderous kicks, but Rutten showed why its a bad idea, for he countered with his own thunderous low kicks. One low kick sent Tamura crumbling down on the mat, which allowed Rutten to rush in with a knee, but Tamura caught it and took donw the dutchman!
But Rutten got him right where he wanted him, and managed to grab his arm and twist it in a defensive kimura for the submission win!

Minoru Suzuki vs Vernon "Tiger" White
Ever since his Pancrase debut, Tiger White has been clamoring to fight Minoru Suzuki. After beating his first two opponents convincingly, Suzuki granted his wish, and both fighters stared each other down during the pre-fight instructions.
Once the bell rang, however, it was clear that Suzuki was the way better wrestler. He toyed with White, blocking everyone of his transitions and easily exposing his left arm for the taking as Suzuki applies the armbar after only 2 minutes of action!
Minoru Suzuki defeats Vernon "Tiger" White by submission via armbar at 2:10
Afterwards, Suzuki thanked the sold out sumo hall crowd for their support and promotes the King pf Pancrase tournament, while a humbled White walked to the back with his head down.

1 round, 30 minutes
Masakatsu Funaki vs Ken Shamrock
At the first ever Pancrase: Hybrid Wrestlers, Masakatsu Funaki shocked the world by submitting Ken Shamrock with a surprise Kimura in barely a minute. Since then, both fighters have gone from strength to strength. Funaki became an instant star in Japan, looking good in defeat against Rickson Gracie, then scoring imprsssive wins over both Kazushi Sakuraba and a great fight with Bas Rutten.
Meanwhile, Shamrock has been making a name for himself on noth sides of the pacific ocean, going undefeated in japan since the loss to Funaki and becoming 2-time runner up of the Ultimate Fighting Championship tournament, losing both times to Royce Gracie in incredibly competitive fights.
Following the win against Suzuki, Shamrock has called out Funaki for a rematch. And now, it is signed and sealed, the packed Sumo Hall is ready for the most important fight in Pancrase, and by extension, Real Fighting's young history.
And what a fight! The two absolutely did not disappoint, for they went through a relentless, brutal war between each other, each fighter escaping one another's submission moves, each fighter rocking each other and somehow still manage to take the other down. Despite the fight going to the 30 minute distance, the first time a Pancrase main event went the distance, there never really was a dull moment.
Funaki already was a big star in japan before the fight, but here, he won the heart of an entire nation and fight fans and tape traders on another continent. The manbeast Shamrock gave him a lot of punishment, especially in the early goings, but Funaki held on and scored some big takedowns and many of his trademark Belly-to-suplex on the american, and came close many times to finishing the fight with his submissions. Shamrock showed his improved defense by getting out of each submission attempt and ragdolling Funaki around with soccer kicks and suplexes of his own.
But Funaki never gave up, and he kept going with his submission attempts and great sweeps, scoring with some nasty ground and pound on Shamrock and even managing to rock him with a high kick, but he couldn't finishi him, for Shamrock rocked him in turn with a big left hand!
In the last minutes of the fight, both fighters were clearly spent and breathing like crazy. Shamrock, however, would be the least tired of the two, and he would spend the last few minutes ragdolling Funaki with takedowns and slams and dish some ground and pound until time expired.
The crowd gave them a huge standing ovation after the 30 minute time limit expired. Both men's corners came to their aid, giving them water and cooling them down as both fighters looked deader than disco. Then, before the judges decision, Funaki and Shamrock hugged each other in true sportmanship, having won each other's respect.
In the end, all three judges gave this incredible fight to Ken Shamrock.
Ken Shamrock defeats Masakatsu Funaki by unanimous decision after 30 minutes.
Post-match, Shamrock took the mic and put over both the crowd, Pancrase management and his corner for their great support, and also praise Funaki for his skills and toughness, saying that he is probably the best fighter in japan right now. He then tells the crowd that he will participate in the "King of Pancrase" tournament next year and that he looks forward to winning the title.
Funaki then took the mic and thanked the crowd for comign in droves and supporting Pancrase since day 1. He says that Shamrock has improved tremendously and can be considered among the best in the world. He finishes by saying that real fights do put butts in the seat, in refference to hsi mentor Yoshiaki Fujiwara's comments which motivated Funaki and Minoru Suzuki to start Pancrase.
Safe to say, real fighting is here to stay...in Japan, at least...in the US, it is quite a different story...
