Thanks!

I just realized I mentioned the wrong version of TEW in the last line of the above post. Oops. I edited out the year, because the errors can really happen in any edition.

Anyway, you're welcome for the tutorial. It took some trial and error on my part many years ago to try and figure out how to get it to work. Thankfully it does, with minimal issues. The most notable one right now is that there is no entry in the taskbar for the game, so if it loses focus you have to Alt+Tab to get back to it (unless you minimize, move, or resize your other windows and click on it directly, of course). It's a minor pain. Though I admit I'm currently using Crossover, so maybe vanilla Wine has fixed it by now.

I'm thinking of removing the WINEPREFIX stuff from the tutorial. That seems to be more advanced and if you know what you're doing, you probably know how to do it already. No need to complicate things with it, after all. I just don't know if it's worth editing that old tutorial or just making a new one. I don't know how many people go to that tech support forum anymore.

  2.
I have a tutorial in the TEW 2010 tech support forum, but it's kind of a mess. It's a little too complicated for newbies, I think.

Basically, you need Wine and Winetricks. I think that the Wine PPA repository for Ubuntu gives you Winetricks in the standard Wine package. So if you use that, you should be set.

Use Winetricks to install ie7, jet40, and vb6run. I know my tutorial says ie6, but I think the last time I tried it, ie6 gave me errors.

TEW may give errors of missing components when you perform certain tasks, and I don't know how really to fix them other than finding the file in a Windows install or online.

  3. First of all, thanks for the tutorial. I've loved this series of games for years now and was worried I wouldn't be able to play anymore now I have a mac.

I am having some problems, though. I've followed your tutorial, purchased and installed the game, but when I try and run the .exe file i am still getting a 'windows file not supported' message. Any ideas?

I'm not a Mac user (I run Linux) but it sounds like maybe there's an issue with your file associations? Maybe Wine didn't correctly register itself to run when .exe files are clicked.

  4. This is what I get when I try to start the program. Went through the steps, purchased, put in the new patch, but this comes up every time I try to start it up.

Edit: Just noticed how small that picture is, but the message is :

    Connection Error (429)

Warning! Connection to 'C:\Program Files\GDS\TEW 2016\System\TEW2016Settings.mdb' has failed (ActiveX component can't create object). The program must now close.

    Any ideas?

Did you install ie6? Maybe you need to install ie7 instead?

Internet Explorer is needed to be able to create the ActiveX object the game needs.
