I honestly don't exactly remember what I said to you, and I don't want to have to trawl back looking for it. Maybe you're thinking what I'm thinking, maybe you're not. Without stating it openly it's hard to tell, and I don't want us to do that, for all the reasons. I hope I have broadly earned your trust, even if the specific hint you saw may have been accidental.

Perhaps he was trying but failed to find his target for whatever reason. Agreed, great news that everyone survived the night, even if one woman had a close encounter (get it?) with death. Eliphas' robo-doctor idea is now head canon though.
