  1. Frankie Edgar is the absolute right choice. Lets ask it another way. If Chael Sonnen had dropped out of the second Anderson Silva fight, who would you rather have took the spot? Chris Weidmann, or Rashad Evans dropping down to Middleweight despite getting dominated by Jon Jones? It's going to make more money, sure, but from an athletic perspective you also have to consider it and, yeah he's dropped two fights but he's also been on a great run. Not to mention Dana White, the fans and their mothers have been calling for him to fight at featherweight for what feels like an age. It's not like we're picking a random guy to drop down. Edgar is popular and people in various parts of the industry feel he'll do well. That outweighs winning streaks 9 times out of 10.
  2. It's a bad move in my eyes to go for the rematch. I'd heavily favour Henderson to win again, possibly by a finish. And if that's the way it goes, Edgar is a ways away from the lightweight belt and no longer the featherweight fit either. To me it just doesn't seem like a good career decision for Edgar, nor a good business decision for the UFC, but what do I know?
  3. How long's a piece of string? Wanderlei Silva? Probably never. Fedor? I'd argue his Werdum loss severely hurt his drawing power (particularly in the West) but there'll be others who disagree for sure. Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture? Probably never. Nick Diaz? Has lost a few fights but his personality and exciting style mean there'll always be people who want to watch him. I guess my point is that it's tough to nail down. There's in-ring ability, personality, fighting style, length of career and so on, so many different factors that affect a fighters drawing power. With regards to Rampage, you might doubt his current ability, but his legendary career and out the cage personality mean that people will want to watch him for probably as long as he goes out there. I personally never put him in the very top echelon of fighters, but still like to see him compete, and will do till he retires or outstays his welcome. Another point is that MMA is still young and it has a small but very hardcore fanbase at its core who'll 'mark' for the pre-Zuffa UFC guys and PRIDE fighters till the day they die. They have an aura and a reputation that I don't think will ever be replicated.
  4. They both were. Not sure if I prefer that or the mounted triangle. Nonetheless two very strong candidates for Sub of the Night already.
  5. To be honest, I think it's going to happen. A big factor being this is what the UFC want, so it's probably going to happen. Hypothetically speaking, if Dana White says that Pettis is getting the next shot, what does Edgar do? Sit out to get the next shot, for what could be the best part of eight months, risking out of sight, out of mind? Take a fight in the meantime against one of several world class lightweights and risk losing his only card (that's he's a top ranked lightweight himself)? I remember having a similar discussion online with someone a while back who was adamant that Demetrious Johnson wasn't going to go to 125lbs after he lost to Cruz. His reasoning? "Mighty Mouse doesn't want to. He said it himself". Then look what happened. Those defending Edgar at 155lbs either say he said he doesn't want to (it doesn't matter really, if Dana says drop down, now he hasn't got the belt he doesn't have many options) or that he deserves a rematch (maybe he does, but like many have said, it's not clear cut and Pettis almost certainly will get it). End of the day, lets not forget that he could easily flit between the divisions. Say he goes to featherweight then loses to Aldo, he could easily blame the cut and go back to 155lbs and still be in the mix. I say, if you've got a title fight on the table and you're coming off a loss, he'd be stupid not to take it if he's not getting the rematch at lightweight. Regardless of all the talk of wars and broken noses, he's got the chance to join a select club of fighters. Like Dana said, they can't force him to drop down, but they can heavily persuade him.
  6. Yeah I can't see same day weigh ins anytime soon. Apart from the literal logistical problems of scheduling it when a fighter should be getting his head in the right place, there's the logistics issue of having to shift entire chunks of the roster around overnight. With the history of the UFC, it's divisions, it's titles and so on, it's going to take something major for them to even entertain the thought. More likely, they'll increase the punishment for missing weight without a legit reason. That way, you can try and cut as much weight as you like, but if you mess it up, it might not have been worth the effort. As an aside, I haven't seen it mentioned in here, but Blagoi Ivanov is currently in intensive care after being stabbed in Bulgaria. Apparently he's in critical condition, hope he pulls through. I'll always remember waking up to, "someones beat Fedor!......in sambo".
  7. I'm not sure on this one. For me, it's a great match-up styles wise, almost guaranteeing a great fight. BJ probably has the edge skill-set wise, but has been inconsistent in the past, with a tendency to fading as the fight progresses. I'm leaning towards a decision or TKO win for either fighter, I'm not sure a pure KO is likely, and can't picture either man getting caught in a submission. So yeah, either BJ is able to force a referee stoppage early on, or I think we'll get a close decision, depending on which Penn turns up. As for StrikeForce, it was a good night of fights. Felt bad for Gracie, his BJJ is superb but without half as good takedowns or stand-up he's always going to struggle at the upper echelons. Didn't think Cormier would be able to drop Bigfoot at will, but he did it. I think it's going to be 50/50 against Barnett. Very close and interesting fight in my eyes.
  8. Holy smokes that's awesome. Maybe they'll go with Silva/Henderson II for UFC 139 now? If Channel 5 stump up the money for this it'll be great, guaranteed to be able to watch it wherever I am.
  9. I think what he's asking is what happens to the two or three fights between the prelims and the broadcast card. Presumably they'll be a facebook deal too?
  10. Yeah I can imagine Franklin getting on there. I just suppose, from a longtime fans point of view, that's disappointing for a BIG surprise, although I get we're not the target audience this time. Overeem/Mir while at first not as media friendly as Franklin/Ortiz, could easily be built into something just as big.
  11. This should be interesting. Often when the UFC has a press conference it's already reported what it's going to be. So by that logic we're going to get the Guida/Henderson fight which is being tossed around. That said, does that qualify as a BIG announcement? I love the fight, but hopefully that's the co-main and they've got something special lined up. EDIT - Ortiz/Franklin would make me a sad panda. A fight with absolutely zero ramifications isn't, to me, what they should be looking for.
  12. Anderson Silva's been my number one P4P guy for a while now, but GSP's a very close second. After Rio, the gap got bigger. Awesome display, people should realise how lucky they are to get to watch very possibly the greatest MMA fighter of all time live and in his prime. Supremely talented fighter. And Big Nog scoring the KO was sweet. He still seems a step behind what he was, and Brendan Schaub was probably never going to be the prospect the UFC hype machine made him out to be, but still a very important win. Maybe it was my love for Griffin, but I thought Shogun would have a tougher time than that. Griffin seems to thrive against traditional fighters, but anyone a bit unorthodox gives him problems.
