    CM Punk vs. Mikey Whipwreck

Starting with Abyss last week, Whipwreck has set his sights on The Gathering and gets another match against the group this week. Unfortunately for the former ECW Champion, the result is more of the same. The underdog has to fight from underneath against an opponent who is superior to him, with Punk displaying his technical skills early on. It’s a stark contrast to Abyss and his power advantage but after blocking the Whippersnapper, the Straight Edge wrestler takes Whipwreck down and locks in the Anaconda Vice to score the submission.

Kevin Northcutt (w/ Tyler Bateman) vs. Erik Watts

No such wrestling clinic here between these two brawlers. They are evenly matched until Bateman hops up on the apron and tries to coax Watts into joining their alliance but the distraction of referee Andrew Thomas enables Northcutt to rake his opponent’s eyes. From there, Northcutt sees the victory home with a Pumphandle Side Slam that he calls the Live From The 504.

On TNA iMPACT, Roddy Piper told us that
    Miss Neilsen
had an announcement to make. In the ring, she says that this one is straight from the office of the Commissioner. TNA is forming the Knockout’s Division and will be showcasing the strongest and the most beautiful women in professional wrestling. More importantly, it will showcase the best and that starts tonight on Xplosion.

Sara Del Rey & Meiko Satomura vs. Takako Inoue & Cheerleader Melissa

For the most part, this match features Melissa and Del Rey duking it out, the latter using her lower centre of gravity to block the Kudo Driver before slamming the Cheerleader into the canvas with the Royal Butterfly. But after Meiko interrupts the pin, Satomura and Inoue try to find out who has the superior fighting spirit. The more experienced battle-hardened Inoue gets the better of an exchange of strikes but an errant Spinning Backfist enables Meiko to hoist her veteran opponent onto her shoulders and lock up the victory with a Death Valley Bomb.

Mike Tenay announces that D’Lo is on his way to Puerto Rico in the near future as part of the working agreement between TNA and IWA. He laid down a marker here, escaping Shane’s clutches when he attempted the Messiah Shot before hitting him with the Sky High to pick up the W.

    Scott Hudson
    catches up with
    Simon Diamond.
He tried to warn those Team Jarrett members that they were little more than lackeys and hanger-ons but they didn’t listen to him. He has a pretty good idea who left them laying in the locker room now that Double J has moved on and left them in the dust. He’s not sure if Glenn Gilbertti and David Young still have a problem with him but he’s happy to accept an apology if it means they can unite against their common enemy.

    Chris Hero vs. Samoa Joe

Jeremy Borash remarks that this may be Joe’s toughest challenge yet since arriving in TNA. In Chris Hero he faces off against a technician, something different to Chris Sabin and Sonjay Dutt. On the other hand, the ‘Samoan Submission Machine’ is a well-rounded competitor and Hero struggles to make inroads, settling instead for trying to take the match long and utilise what may be his superior cardiovascular conditioning. It’s all to no avail, Hero getting caught on an attempted Rip Cord Rolling Elbow with Joe’s Uranage before his challenge is put down for good with the Muscle Buster.

    B4JTtoM.jpg

At HudsonHQ, the man himself shuffles his papers.
    He has breaking news.

”I understand that TNA Wrestling has come to terms with the release of Erik Watts and Goldylocks, effective immediately...”

Both Erik and Goldylocks had been unhappy at their lack of TV time and although iMPACT was being extended to two hours soon, Dutch didn’t see a spot for the pair on the flagship broadcast. Rather than allow disgruntled campers to undermine the positive mood in the dressing room, Dutch decided to let both of them go instead. He figured that nothing would happen as a result of their departure.

    RVj7ng9.jpg

In a Nashville hotel room, Erik Watts stews over his release.

He wondered what staffer or agent had ratted him out for being unhappy about his spot but he expected a better push after enduring several months as the Director of Authority. Maybe he should have seen the writing on the wall when Dutch was appointed Head of Creative, he always had been a Jeff Jarrett favourite. But it was back to NWA Wildside for Bill Watts’s son now, back to working the smaller promotions with the smaller houses. On the dresser table he hears the phone ring.

”Hi Erik this is Bill Behrens here, I have something drastic to discuss with you. Think you can make it to the office tomorrow morning?”

  2. But i have to wonder , why 2 World Champs? If you already created the TNA World Title, why not just vacate the NWA Worlds Title and leave it up for grabs ? This way you can get around Jeff's creative control.

It's a good question. I was thinking of going the New Japan route and keeping the NWA title on as a secondary belt. My initial plan was for Jarrett to drop it to Gonzalez and then the NWA could do as they please with it. But I've got some different plans now which will unfold very soon.

Bloodweiser! Give me a shell yeah!

I wonder who's idea it was to put them together. :p

Jarrett, Kanyon and Awesome are quite the formidable trio and one that could potentially dominate TNA for a good while. I'm definitely intrigued.

Just like you, I've dropped the Team Jarrett stuff because they stink haha. And Kanyon is somebody I'm a fan of that I felt never got used to his full potential. Hopefully I can right that wrong here!

Simon Diamond & Chris Vaughn vs. Ekmo & Sonny Siaki

    TIME LIMIT: 10 MINUTES

As predicted by most, Diamond & Vaughn stand little chance against the Samoan Connection here. Vaughn hits his beautiful dropkick on Siaki and Diamond scores a near fall on Ekmo with the Gem Cutter but eventually the two Samoans find their groove thanks to their superior size and tag team experience. The Gorilla Press from Ekmo, the Cutter from Siaki and that’s all she wrote for the upstart duo.

We shoot to footage recorded on Saturday in Puerto Rico. In the dressing room,
    The New Franchise
celebrate their retaining of the NWA World Tag Team Championship. Popping two bottles of champagne, Monty Brown dunks most of his on Michael Shane as Shane Douglas waxes lyrical about them having beaten all contenders in this dynastic reign of theirs. Who else could Commissioner Piper possibly put in front of them now?

    t53QyJO.jpg

Overhearing the good times being had and never shy to join in a party,
    The Sandman
walks in. Snatching the bottle of champagne from Douglas, he necks a mouthful but spits it out all over the wall next to Monty Brown.
”This stuff tastes like crap compared to beer!”
As for Douglas’s remarks, The Sandman would love a shot but Shane Douglas is sceptical.
”Who could possibly want to team up with you?”
The Sandman whistles and through the door comes
    Shark Boy!

    FfiRKaI.jpg

”Gentlemen, you’re looking at the next NWA Tag Team Champions… I smell blood, he drinks beer, we are Bloodweiser!”

Michael Shane laughs but Shark Boy tells him to underestimate them at their peril because the match is already official. In two weeks time, iMPACT comes to Texas and The New Franchise will be leaving the Lone Star State on their own with no NWA World Tag Team Championship to keep them company!

    Standard Singles Match

    Chris Sabin vs. Amazing Red

    TIME LIMIT: 10 MINUTES

Mike Tenay points out that whilst Sabin is undefeated on Xplosion so far this year, the last time he won a match on iMPACT or PPV was his #1 Contendership clash with Elix Skipper back in February. He was trying to get back on track here but Amazing Red has picked up some impressive momentum recently and he carried on his winning ways, frustrating Sabin by countering the Cradle Shock into a Victory Roll for the 3 count.

Sabin looks disappointed with himself and slams his hand against the mat as Amazing Red has his hand raised as the victor. He’s been on a roll lately and speaking of wrestlers that have some momentum behind them, Mike Tenay throws us to some pre-recorded promos with the four men set to contest next week’s Four Way Shootout to decide a new #1 Contender for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

    MQpWxGV.jpg

    For
    Ron Killings
, competing for the richest prize in TNA Wrestling on the 2nd Anniversary Show would be redemption for all the hard work he’s put in to reach this point. He’s going to punch his ticket for a match with Sting, GET The Gathering and then take home the gold. BEWARE! Because ‘The Truth’ is coming.

    DkHHIIl.jpg

    For
    Christopher Daniels
, it’s only right that the X-Division God be given this opportunity. Next month, he will defeat Sting and he will unify both championships because that’s what the ‘Fallen Angel’ was put on this earth to do.

    ROjQVjr.jpg

    For
    AJ Styles
, he’s often been called ‘Mr. TNA’ because he’s set the standard around here. It’s not arrogance if you can back it up and there are very few in that locker room that are on his level. He’s undefeated so far this year and he intends to keep that streak going next week.

    wCybwcW.jpg

    For
    CM Punk
, he left Raven’s tutelage because opportunities like this one would never have been forthcoming the longer he lingered in that man’s shadow. As far as he's concerned, matches of this magnitude are where he belongs and it’s going to taste even more sweet when he drops Ron Killings with the Devil Lock DDT and secures his place in the main event of the 2nd Anniversary Show.
    ”Quote The Gathering, nevermore.”

    Standard Singles Match

    Jeff Hardy vs. Jason Cross

    TIME LIMIT: 10 MINUTES

For young Jason Cross, this was a golden opportunity with nothing to lose and everything to gain. For a short while, some complacency creeped into Jeff Hardy’s game as he was outmaneuvered by his quicker, leaner opponent. Cross had done his homework, ducking the Reverse Enzuigiri to get behind Hardy, hooking him for a Reverse Suplex and planting him on his stomach before crushing his opponent’s spine with a Standing Shooting Star Press. The ‘Enigma’ knew his opponent wasn’t playing.

However, once Hardy got his head in the game this match was only going one way. Despite his scouting, Cross was still unable to evade the Whisper in the Wind as Hardy gradually wore him down before spiking him on his head courtesy of the Twist of Fate. Referee Slick Johnson could have counted to 10 before the youngster would have raised his shoulder.

He hasn’t been able to make it to the arena tonight, f’n travel issues man. Piper rues that Savio won’t be able to get this revenge firsthand. Does he have a replacement partner for the match coming up next? Good, Apolo it is. As for Jeff Jarrett, Piper will ensure that Vega gets his opportunity to face him when the time is right.

    Knock on the door and

    brings in
    Jerry Lynn
for the ‘Hot Rod’. She has an announcement to make on Xplosion so Piper tells her to make sure everything is in place for that. She duly agrees and leaves the boys to chit-chat.

Piper congratulates Lynn on winning at Caribbean Combat and true to his word, he will get his TNA X-Division Championship opportunity in two week’s time on iMPACT. It’s the main event so no pressure… but Lynn likes pressure and to be honest, he’s been waiting for this opportunity all along. He only made his iMPACT debut last week and he expects that we’ll be seeing a lot more of him when he becomes the first ever three-time X-Division Champion.

    Standard Tag Team Match

Apolo & Ray Gonzalez vs. Jeff Jarrett & Chris Kanyon

    TIME LIMIT: 15 MINUTES

With Savio Vega not here, Apolo steps in and uses his size and power to good use. Unfortunately for him, Jarrett & Kanyon are an exceptional team with great chemistry and complement one another very well. Working over the rotund Puerto Rican, he has no choice but to bring in Gonzalez. ‘Mr. Rayting’ is more successful and sends Jarrett to the outside with a Clothesline before duking it out with Kanyon. Kanyon Cutter? No way, Gonzalez turns and counters it into a Neckbreaker instead.

On the outside of the ring, Apolo drives Jarrett into the steel security railing and stalks his prey. But somebody in the crowd throws an errant punch and in the ensuing scuffle, the musclebound man is pulled over the railing. As the two men brawl into the crowd, we manage to catch who the assailant is...

    9E45kvH.jpg

With clubbing blows to each other’s mid-section, Apolo and
    Mike Awesome
disappear from the arena floor altogether through a side door towards the backstage area.

This of course spells trouble for Gonzalez. He tries to end it quickly, putting Kanyon on his shoulders for the Fenix Landing but the Innovator of Offence drops out behind him and shoves ‘Mr. Rayting’ straight into Jarrett’s outstretched arm. Together, they execute a combination Flatliner-Stroke to Gonzalez and the legal man Jarrett covers to pick up the victory.

    Mike Awesome
re-emerges through the crowd and we catch a glimpse of Apolo in the parking lot area, crawling on all fours and trying to stand with the assistance of a nearby production cart. Clearly the fight went in Awesome’s favour, most fights do.

In the ring, the trio shake hands with one another and point to the entrance tunnel where
    Don Callis
    emerges...

”We should have guessed that human garbage played a part in bringing this alliance together…”

He joins the group, taking a microphone to announce that Team Jarrett is no more! It’s simple - it wasn’t working. As Jarrett’s consultant, he has to put his client’s best interests first and that alliance was no longer beneficial to Double J. In the ring stand the three most powerful professional wrestlers in all of TNA Wrestling and nobody should be in two minds about where the power lies now. Callis shoots a shiteating grin at the hard camera as Mike Tenay signs us off for the evening, wondering what this new development means for the promotion but more importantly, what does it mean for Jeff Jarrett to now have both Kanyon and Mike Awesome in his corner?

Jeff Jarrett vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles

    Comment:

"The Icon" Sting vs. "The Outsider" Scott Hall

Comment: I'm going with Jarrett as first Champion and keeping Sting ready to face him later on.

TNA Tag Team Championship tournament final

America's Most Wanted vs. 3 Live Kru

Comment: They've got legs as a group, provided you can keep Konnan.

    Raven's Rules match

    Raven vs. "The Monster" Abyss

Comment: Too soon for Abyss to get this kind of rub.

"Hot Rod" Roddy Piper vs. CM Punk

Comment: Punk probably should win but I'm not sure he's good enough for the sort of push beating Piper would give him.

"The Charismatic Enigma" Jeff Hardy vs. ???

    Comment:

    Bonus Question:

Who will be the "Special Enforcer" in the main event? Kevin Nash. And he screws Styles, joining Team Jarrett. :D

  5. Chavo Guerrero Jr. & Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Chris Jericho & Eddy Guerrero

So much talent in one ring haha. With Chavo getting a title shot at Superbrawl and Rey making his case for one I don't see them losing here.

Dean Malenko w/The Horsemen vs. Chris Benoit w/The Flock

He's being pushed stronger and I think that continues here.

    Non-Title Match

Diamond Dallas Page w/Kimberly Page vs. Meng w/The Barbarian & Jimmy Hart

Haku is gonna FEEL - THE - BANG!

Bill Goldberg vs. Lord Steven Regal

Transferring all of Regal's overness onto Goldberg I see. :p

Booker T w/Stevie Ray & Jacqueline Moore vs. Wrath w/Mortis & James Vandenberg

I wonder how far away you are from a Booker T singles run in this diary.

Sting & The Giant vs. The Outsiders

For no other reason than I think Hall needs to be kept strong going into his title shot.

”See, that is why I went over tonight.”

Backstage, Jeff Jarrett spoke to Dutch after his match and felt proud of himself for his performance in winning the match. The head of creative agreed, the match against Gonzalez had gone better than expected and although he was frustrated at having to yield to Jarrett’s contractual demands, it wasn’t lost on Dutch that it took two to tango.

    9nnDEBd.jpg

That’s why he waited also for Ray Gonzalez to come through the curtain, telling him that they would talk about his contract and doing more dates now he had fulfilled two of the three he had initially signed up for.

Once the show was complete, Mike Awesome was also complimented for his performance. The match had been put together by Dutch himself as a Wild Brawl to accentuate Awesome’s strengths and he felt it had been received well by the live crowd. With Caribbean Combat in the books, the Head of Creative started jotting down the plans for the first iMPACT of May.

    NWA Championship

Jeff Jarrett © (w/ Don Callis) vs. Ray Gonzalez (w/ Savio Vega)

    TIME LIMIT: 30 MINUTES

Despite the bell ringing, there is some time before any actual action because both Don Callis and Savio Vega make nuisances of themselves at ringside, gesticulating to the referee about this, that and the other. As Callis comes around one side of the ring to get closer to Vega and remonstrate further about the checking of foreign objects concealed within elbow and knee pads, referee Andrew Thomas decides that enough is enough.

    7vDTmWQ.jpg

“Great call from the referee to send them both to the back!”

Now we’re underway! Kind of… Jarrett honed his wrestling skills in Memphis and he plays the La Puntilla Arena like a harp, hiding in the ropes after Gonzalez backs him up on the lock-up, ducking outside the ring and re-entering at 9 just to break the count. He makes the Puerto Rican faithful wait before his opponent can get his hands on him but when he does the reaction is electric and ‘Mr. Rayting’ backs him up with left hand after left hand after left hand. Clothesline over the top rope to the outside! Jarrett thinks he may have some respite here but no dice says Gonzalez, leaping off the apron with a Somersault Senton.

He carries on applying the pressure inside the ring but a thumb to the eye stops him dead in his tracks and Double J tries softening up that left leg for the Figure Four Leglock. But Gonzalez isn’t under the cosh for long. With the hometown crowd behind him, he rallies again, lifting Jarrett up for a Backdrop Suplex and nearly dethroning him after the impact, holding on to a pin for a 2.9 count. Now it’s time for the Fenix Landing. Up onto Ray’s shoulders goes Jarrett but he staggers with his left leg struggling to handle the additional body weight.

    7vDTmWQ.jpg

“Jarrett’s legs are flailing, he’s trying to escape...”

    jDWA57W.jpg

”But he caught Andrew Thomas with his boot and now the referee is down!”

Gonzalez doesn’t spot the fall of the refree but he does manage to secure Jarrett’s position on his shoulders and slams Double J into the canvas with the TKO, noticing only after the impact that the official is incapacitated. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - the La Puntilla Arena counts along and we should have a new NWA Champion!

Gonzalez faces the entrance tunnel now, we need a new official. But from the bleachers, somebody clad in a black hooded jacket jumps over the security railing and enters the ring, sizing up ‘Mr. Rayting’ as the crowd try to alert him to the presence standing behind him. When Gonzalez does turn, the man drops his hood.

    mLfV2Ku.jpg

    To reveal Chris Kanyon!

With a boot to the midsection, Kanyon has Gonzalez doubling over before he hooks him in the center of the ring and drops him face first with the Flatliner! Kanyon grabs Jarrett’s left arm and pulls him over Gonzalez before darting out of the ring to hide as referee Andrew Thomas comes to and counts the slow, tense but inevitable 3.

    ElclwUV.jpgmLfV2Ku.jpg

Puerto Ricans are disappointed but many of them are fans of IWA and are probably used to these kinds of shenanigans by now. Much to the confusion of Andrew Thomas,
    Kanyon
comes back into the ring, giving the NWA Championship to still prone
    Jeff Jarrett
before helping him back to his feet and from the ring. They depart up the ramp together...

    HqiXuFN.jpg

    However,
    Scott Hudson
emerges from the tunnel, microphone in hand and keen to get the scoop on why Kanyon is here. The duo have no time for the journalist, blowing past him like he’s not even there and going through the tunnel as Ray Gonzalez returns to a vertical base in the ring. Disappointed to lose, but surely proud of his performance and how far he managed to push the NWA Champion, Gonzalez enjoys the support from the hometown crowd.

    7vDTmWQ.jpg

“I hope we see Gonzalez in a TNA ring again very soon.”

    jDWA57W.jpg

    Four Way X-Division Shootout

Amazing Red vs. Jerry Lynn vs. Kid Kash vs. Silas Young

    TIME LIMIT: 15 MINUTES

After the drama of our opening contest, this one starts slower and all four guys work at a more methodical pace before kicking into a higher gear later on. It all comes down to Amazing Red and Jerry Lynn, Silas Young having been dumped to the outside by the former when attempting his Handstand Arabian Press and Kid Kash having been taken out with the Cradle Piledriver from the latter.

Amazing Red tries to pull a fast one with the O’Connor Roll on Jerry Lynn, the move he pinned Julio Dinero with. Unfortunately for him, Lynn is a bit stronger and manages to kick him away before the pin is completed. With Jerry Lynn on all fours, it’s time for the Red Star Press but the veteran takes evasive action and brings Amazing Red straight into a La Magistral cradle, holding him down to the canvas with his superior size and strength just long enough for referee Slick Johnson to count the 3.

Shades of the great Negro Casas got the job done for Jerry Lynn. A student of the game, he now has a date with the X-Division Champion in the near future.

After failing to catch a word with Jeff Jarrett and Kanyon earlier tonight,
    Scott Hudson
has entered the other camp and catches up with an irate
    Savio Vega
    and a quietly disconsolate
    Ray Gonzalez.
Vega is slamming lockers as Gonzalez sits and stews, contemplating the night’s events. Hudson inquires, what happens next? Vega returns the word, promising that Jarrett and his new friend; all his friends! ...will get what’s coming to them.

”On Wednesday, you can bring your friend Kanyon and we’ll find two guys who are gonna kick your ass, comprende?”

Gonzalez says something in Spanish and Savio kindly translates, his friend is right when he says that this score is far from settled!

    NWA World Tag Team Championship

The New Franchise (Shane Douglas & Michael Shane) (w/ Monty Brown) © vs. Thunder and Lightning

    TIME LIMIT: 30 MINUTES

Despite TNF’s ideal preparation against The Harris Twins, facing Thunder & Lightning in their home territory is of course a different proposition. The Puerto Rican duo are too powerful early on and not even the veteran Shane Douglas has any ideas how to stop the onslaught. However, embracing the chaos, the Champions goad Lightning into clashing with Monty Brown on the outside before they double team Thunder on the inside.

Referee Slick Johnson doesn’t know whether to count out the legal man on the outside or the double teaming inside. But his mind is made up when Lightning enters the ring with a steel chair and uses it to good effect, smashing Shane Douglas across the back to get him away from Thunder. Unfortunately that’s grounds for a DQ, disqualified for kicking too much ass.

Although technically the victors and still the NWA World Tag Team Champions,
    The New Franchise
do not look like it. After the bell, Shane Douglas takes a Dudley Death Drop from the Puerto Rican duo as Michael Shane and Monty Brown retreat up the ramp together. As Thunder & Lightning enjoy their moment standing tall, we jump to the interview room where
    Scott Hudson
    is standing by with
    Christopher Daniels.

Later tonight he defends against Chicano, Commissioner Piper has been making him work and if he was a paranoid man, he would believe there may be some kind of agenda against the ‘Fallen Angel’. Hudson tries to probe on this, pointing out that he did have to defend his title against Bryan Danielson just 10 days after defeating both Skipper & Low-Ki at Genesis... but Daniels doesn’t take his bait. It’s all part of proving how superior he is to the rest of the X-Division.

”I am an X-Division God! And just like all the rest, Chicano will fall victim to the ‘Fallen Angel’.”

    Grudge Match

BG James (w/ Ron Killings) vs. Dustin Rhodes

    TIME LIMIT: 15 MINUTES

There is no getting past that this feels like a match from 1998, complete with both men brawling outside the ring. Dustin gets introduced to the steel ring post but he retaliates, slamming James into the steel steps. Ron Killings gives Dustin a glare as he returns his tag team partner to the ring, referee Slick Johnson reminding ‘The Truth’ at this moment not to get involved in the action despite his misgivings of the man that let down him and his friend several weeks ago.

Dustin is the more technically sound of the two of course but he’s dealing with BG’s emotional energy, the man is determined to prove that it’s The Kru you avoid picking a fight with around here. Corner punches from James have the crowd chanting along but Dustin brings him out with an Inverted Atomic Drop. To the ropes goes BG, Dustin telegraphing the Snap Powerslam as James holds on to apply the brakes. Great minds think alike, Clothesline time and both men hit the deck.

This is the time for The Gathering to get involved,
Father Mitchell, Abyss, CM Punk & Julio Dinero
    emerging from the tunnel...

They walk down the entrance ramp, or rather, three of them do because Dinero charges to ringside instead and hurls himself at Ron Killings. The two brawl around ringside before Julio shoves ‘The Truth’ into Abyss and ‘The Monster’ hoists him up and straight back down onto the padded concrete floor with a thunderous Black Hole Slam.

Inside the ring, BG James stirs and catches The Gathering looming at ringside. As referee Slick Johnson busies himself trying to eject the group from the arena, Dustin Rhodes takes advantage of the distraction, catching BG with an uppercut before finishing him off with the Lonestar State of Mind.

Dustin has his hand raised in victory inside the ring and with what’s left of his energy, BG James rolls out the ring to check on his friend by the bottom of the entrance ramp. As The Gathering join Dustin Rhodes in the ring, The Kru are spotted leaving together.

Father Mitchell keeps it simple when addressing the grandson of a plumber. For a man with an identity crisis, Dustin looked every bit ‘The Natural’ tonight.
”Believe me, there are some things you just don’t forget.”
As it happens, he specialises in helping people find who they really are.

”To my left, Brother Julio. Once led astray by Raven, now a fierce follower of my teachings, the first man to jump into battle.”
    Julio nods in agreement.
“To my right, CM Punk. Once worshipped the ground that Raven walked on, now because of me, his former mentor is gone and he worships the ground that I walk on instead.”
Mitchell doesn’t catch it but Punk’s only response is a subtle glance.

”Behind me, Abyss. ‘The Monster’. Destruction personified. A troubled man who channels that into delivering all manner of punishment, punishment he could be delivering at your hands Dustin.”
Abyss puts his hands together in a crushing motion. Oh yes, if Dustin wants to find himself, The Gathering is the place for him. But Father Mitchell doesn’t need an answer right now and tells Dustin that all he wants is for him to think about it...

    Interpromotional Tag Team Match

Apolo & AJ Styles vs. Glamour Boy Shane & Elix Skipper

    TIME LIMIT: 15 MINUTES

Mike Tenay says that Savio Vega was originally supposed to be ringside for this one but has clearly been thrown off his game by the debuting Kanyon costing Ray Gonzalez the NWA Championship. It doesn’t matter that much, Apolo is a big man that knows how to use his size and power well and that’s exactly what he does here. He’s never going to win match of the year but he and AJ have a good
    big guy, little guy
dynamic and they work together well for a first time team.

As for Skipper & Shane, they wrestle this match more like two individuals and ‘Primetime’ seems hesitant in trusting his partner. Who can blame him after the dissolution of Triple X? Perhaps he has some trust issues to work through. Although Skipper impresses once again, taking down AJ Styles with a Kryptonite Krunch and walking the ropes to deliver a Hurricanrana with a bit of New School, the conclusion of this match sees Apolo teeing off with Shane. The IWA World Heavyweight Champion attempts the Messiah Shot but Apolo swings his massive arms, elbowing him off before picking up the pinfall with a Sit-Out Side Slam he calls the Fondo del Abismo.

    The broadcast is interrupted by
    Scott D’Amore
pacing down to the ring without entrance music,
    Legend
    and
    Omega
following him closely behind. Once in the ring, D’Amore snatches the microphone away from JB and claims that it’s a travesty none of his trainees are on this PPV. It’s an Anti-Canadian bias!
”You’re telling me that they’ll put Thunder & Lightning on PPV but not Legend & Omega? One of those teams has actually been on iMPACT!”
Obviously the Puerto Rican crowd reject the tarnishing of one of their local favourites but D’Amore is soon shut up...

    n81ZRRy.jpg2QKldbA.jpg

    Because
    Chris Harris
    &
    James Storm
emerge from the entrance tunnel. Harris admits that D’Amore might be right, America’s Most Wanted aren’t on this PPV either and they ain’t happy about that. Not happy one bit. But they know that complaining about it won’t change a damn thing. They just gotta keep putting in the work. But as it so happens, they’re looking for a fight too and considering these Canadians are already in the ring, let’s run it back boys!

    jDWA57W.jpg

    ”AMW are storming the ring!”

    7vDTmWQ.jpg

”But D’Amore and his Canadian team want nothing to do with them.”

Indeed, the Canadian trio duck out the ropes as soon as the ‘Wildcat’ and the ‘Cowboy’ enter the ring, leaving AMW on their own to enjoy the spotlight on PPV. They hand JB a microphone and laugh at D’Amore’s cowardice but from a distance, the Canadian Coach tells the group that they won’t be laughing when he reveals his ace card, whatever that may be.

    TNA X-Division Championship

    Christopher Daniels © vs. Chicano

    TIME LIMIT: 30 MINUTES

Daniels may have dispatched several worthy challengers in his reign so far but all great champions must face a variety of challenges and in Chicano he meets a striker, a wrestler that has had to hone his game against brawlers and has learned to join them. He takes Daniels to task early on, gaining the advantage every time the two exchange strikes before catching him with a Sit-Out Spinebuster and a Savate Kick for close near falls.

But the truth is that Daniels is a class apart technique-wise and once he seizes the momentum there’s little opportunity for the Puerto Rican to take it back. He survives the Fall From Grace and the Last Rites and he even hits the Urinage before climbing to the top turnbuckle. However, Daniels raises his knees when Chicano comes off for the Senton Bomb, having not done nearly enough to daze the Champion sufficiently for his finishing move.

    7vDTmWQ.jpg

”That’s why they call it high risk Don.”

The ‘Fallen Angel’ takes full advantage of the mis-queue, bringing Chicano back to his feet for the Angel’s Wings followed by the Best Moonsault Ever to retain his X-Division title in a relatively routine manner.

The sound of bagpipes and drums filling the La Puntilla Arena can mean only one thing, it’s time for a bit of
    ‘Hot Rod’ Roddy Piper!
He comes out of the entrance tunnel with his assistant
    Miss Neilsen
and is as popular with the audience as several of their Puerto Rican favourites. One wonders if Piper pines for a return to in-ring competition each time he hears the way the fans receive him but there’s no time for those kinds of thoughts, he’s here as the Commissioner of TNA to make an announcement.

”Our next PPV will be the TNA 2nd Anniversary Show on Saturday, Week 3, June 2004! Live from the AutoZone Park in Nashville, Tennessee!”

And considering we need a #1 Contender for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship, Commissioner Piper has decided that in two weeks time on TNA iMPACT!, a Four Way Shootout between Ron Killings, CM Punk, AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels will decide who meets the winner of tonight’s main event when TNA Wrestling turns two years old.

    TNA World Heavyweight Championship

Sting © vs. Mike Awesome (w/ Don Callis)

    TIME LIMIT: 30 MINUTES

Despite showing no signs of the backstage attack from Awesome when he showed up last week, Awesome fires some early shots into the Champion’s mid-section early on and exposes the act. Clubbing blow across the back, the Stinger’s spine is still feeling that Awesome Bomb on the pickup truck. Sting tries to escape to the outside but there’s no respite to be found out there because Awesome leaps over the top with a Suicide Dive and wipes him clean out!

Time to finish a deal inside the ring, Awesome Bomb time. Sting is hoisted up but he escapes out the back door and rallies with overhand right hands. He charges in for a Crossbody but Awesome catches him and plants with an authoritative Powerslam, inflicting further damage on the back and ribs of ‘The Icon’. As the challenger backs up Sting to the corner and wails away with punches to the solar plexus, Don Callis gets up on the opposite side of the ring…

    7vDTmWQ.jpg

”The snake is removing the turnbuckle corner...”

Awesome tries to whip Sting into the now-exposed steel but he puts the brakes on, jumping onto the second turnbuckle before leaping off with a Crossbody. This time, he takes Awesome down instead of being caught mid-air but scores barely a 1 count from the resulting pinfall. Firing away with right hands on his downed opponent, ‘The Icon’ stands and beats his chest, the surge of adrenaline shutting out the pain from the punishment inflicted so far. Awesome is sent into the corner, Stinger Splash! But the #1 Contender doesn’t go down so Sting hits him with another one. Still standing! A third one sends Awesome to the deck. Scorpion Deathlock time! Sting hooks him but turning the big man over is a challenge and between the power in those massive legs and Awesome’s desperate crawl to safety, the only outcome is referee Rudy Charles enforcing the rope break.

Both competitors climb back to a vertical base, still a bit of a stalemate thus far. They meet in center and exchange punches. Sting strikes, yay - Awesome strikes, boo! With the La Puntilla Arena behind him, Sting gets the better of the exchange but Awesome ducks a Clothesline, runs the ropes and cleans up the Stinger with a stiff LARIATOOO! Seizing the opportunity, Awesome ascends to the top turnbuckle and leaps off with the Awesome Splash…

    jDWA57W.jpg

”Nobody home, you’ve got to be kidding me! Sting rolled out the way and Awesome just crashed to the canvas!”

Both men struggle back on their feet. Sting tries to whip Awesome into the exposed steel turnbuckle but Awesome counters. Sting counters the counter and steel meets skull, that wasn’t what Don Callis had planned! Awesome staggers backwards from the impact and Sting knows exactly what to do, digging his claws in and hooking him immediately before dropping him head and neck first with the Scorpion Deathdrop! Mike Awesome does kick out but unfortunately for him it’s just after Rudy Charles’s right hand had met the canvas to count the three.

    Sting
is the winner, thanks in no part to
    Don Callis
removing the turnbuckle padding earlier in the match. But Mike Tenay wonders if it was a pyrrhic victory because
    Mike Awesome
is back to a vertical base first and stands in the corner. Jarrett’s Consultant argues with Rudy Charles about the cadence of his count but his pleas are to no avail. Sting begins to stand with the assistance of the ropes and there’s a moment of tension as Awesome watches but he decides against continuing the fight and instead leaves up the ramp along with Don Callis.

‘The Icon’ has his hand raised by Rudy Charles as he climbs all four corners, occasionally clutching his ribs between moments raising the Championship. In two week’s time, he’ll find out his next challenger for the next PPV but with the target on his back, will somebody else try to claim the TNA World Heavyweight Championship beforehand?

  10. I don't buy that, necessarily, because Bray was a proven merchandise mover. By comparison, how many Mace & T-Bar shirts have they sold?

You're right, logic would presume that top merch sellers are retained for the revenue they generate but I don't think that matters any longer. I found this graph very illuminating (credit to, I believe, Wrestlenomics?) with regards how WWE's business model is evolving.

    E7qgNKXXMAI9fzJ?format=jpg&name=medium

  11. Didn't Omega hit him with the World title?

Yes but to be fair, Hangman did kick out of that. I definitely left with the feeling that he lost because he got V-triggered twice and then hit with the One Winged Angel but if others think it's one of those where the babyface has an excuse for losing then that's fair enough.

  12. Look, they are not going to book somebody else against Omega at All Out. This is classic wrestling story-telling- the red-hot babyface has just been screwed out of a title opportunity by those no good cheating heels. There's seemingly NO WAY that they're going to get a title shot now. (Spoiler- they almost always find a way.)

He wasn't cheated though, Omega just gave him a couple of V-triggers, a One Winged Angel and pinned him clean as a sheet haha.

I suspect that the All Out main event is MJF vs. Jericho, in which case I imagine the AEW title match will be something like Omega vs. Christian. More a TV title match than a PPV title match since the main event is set in stone and there is little point using a headline match in the undercard.

That, and Adam Page's wife is pregnant. I wonder if the feeling is that right now the timing isn't right to do this match and have him lose just as the timing isn't right to give him the belt if he's going to take paternity leave or a reduced schedule soon.

  13. Yeah, Dave Meltzer does sound exactly that when he does radio. :D

With Scott Hudson busy prioritising his newfound journalistic duties over commenting on the B-show, Eric Gargiulo joins JB for Xplosion this week. In many ways he’s an improvement upon Hudson with a much finer attention to detail and he picks up on what a huge victory it would be if Jason Cross was to knock off one half of the NWA World Tag Team Champions just 24 hours out from Caribbean Combat. Unfortunately it’s not to be and the Sweet Shane Music closes the deal for Shane Douglas’s tag partner.

    David Young
and calls out Simon Diamond for a Beat The Clock challenge right here, right now. If he wins, he will prove once and for all that it was always Simon Diamond that was holding back Team Jarrett and not him!

    Simon Diamond
answers the challenge and introduces Gilbertti’s opponent, the young prospect
    Chris Vaughn.
Once he’s defeated Gilbertti and set the time, Simon Diamond will dispatch David Young and then maybe Jeff Jarrett will finally be wise to the men he allows to leech off his fame and glory.

    Beat The Clock Challenge

Chris Vaughn (w/ Simon Diamond) vs. Glenn Gilbertti (w/ David Young)

Always a man with his ear to the wall, JB says that Diamond has been training Chris Vaughn and sees him as a ‘diamond in the rough’. Though his offence is a little basic at times, he impresses with a floatover DDT and catches G.G. with a beautiful standing Dropkick. He attempts a Cutter but Gilbertti shoves him away and catches him coming back in with the Chart Buster, setting the time to beat at 6:24.

    Beat The Clock Challenge

Simon Diamond (w/ Chris Vaughn) vs. David Young (w/ Glenn Gilbertti)

Vaughn was disappointed to lose but Diamond tells him not to worry and is proud of his student for his display out there. Once this match gets underway, Diamond takes control. Young attempts a Spinebuster but Diamond watches him drop his head telegraphing the move and spikes him with a DDT. As he puts Young on his shoulders for the Simonizer, G.G. charges in and ambushes him, saving face as the referee calls the disqualification at 5:32.

    POfWSgR.jpg

(yes, these two matches got the exact same rating haha)

Post-match, the aftermath descends into a brawl with
    Glenn Gilbertti
    continuing his assault on
    Simon Diamond
    and
    David Young
    subduing the attempted rescue from

Mikey Whipwreck (w/ Shark Boy) vs. Abyss (w/ James Mitchell)

Whipwreck is another former ECW competitor competing for Raven’s honour after ‘The Monster’ took him out but he’s mostly a glutton for punishment here. He rallies a few times, getting the crowd behind his undeniable underdog charisma and even
    Shark Boy
starts to pull for little Mikey despite his supernatural attachment to Abyss. But the Black Hole Slam unfortunately dispels any notion of their being an upset on the cards here.

    BYUVw9o.jpg

    As
    Shark Boy
enters the ring to check on Whipwreck, he finds himself nose to nose with
    Abyss.
    Father Mitchell
enters and smiles, clearly excited to see somebody else get crushed by ‘The Monster’.

    But before that can happen,
    The Sandman
comes charging down the entrance ramp with a singapore cane in hand! He enters the ring, encouraging Shark Boy to get behind him, daring Abyss to give him a fight. Father Mitchell thinks that enough is enough for one night though and at his command, the two of them leave the ringside area as The Sandman joins his new friend in checking on the ultimate underdog, still down on the canvas.

    Chris Sabin vs. Silas Young

With no match scheduled for Caribbean Combat, Chris Sabin was out to prove a point here. Although the X-Division’s Real Man was wise to the Cradle Shock, fighting his way out with elbows to the neck and right ear area of Chris Sabin, the former X-Division Champion caught him with a Fisherman’s Buster. Young would kick out of that but after an exchange of different roll-up pins, Sabin finally got Young’s shoulders to the canvas with a Bridging Jackknife Pin and held him down long enough to secure the victory.

    CARD SUBJECT TO CHANGE

    Saturday, Week 4, April 2004

    2IWD81X.jpgIxzsRLj.jpg

Since taking over as head of creative, Dutch had been surprised with how little he had spoken to the company owner Dixie Carter. For the most part, she enabled him to get on with the job, only consulting him about possible new signings and business decisions of that nature.

Most of them were ridiculous prospects that TNA Wrestling could ill afford like NJPW’s newest acquisition, Bill Goldberg. It had been quiet on the signing of new talent for a while, short of some younger guys that were working on a handshake.

But as they boarded a flight for Puerto Rico, Dixie Carter introduced Dutch Mantell to TNA’s newest signing and told him that this journey was the perfect opportunity to work out how he would figure into the story plans going forward. Dutch was taken aback. He hadn’t been consulted on this one and he just had to deal with this? He scanned his eyes across the match card for Caribbean Combat and had an idea.

    ’Yes…’
    , he thought.
’Now I have a finish for this match...’

TNA World Heavyweight Championship tournament semi final

    D'Lo Brown vs. Jeff Jarrett

I love D'Lo but Jarrett is going all the way now Sting is out the way.

TNA World Heavyweight Championship tournament semi final

I'm not sure how this works out, but AJ vs. Jarrett to decide the first Champion would be a brilliant final. I think he gets the job done here thanks to Sting and/or Jeff Hardy.

TNA Tag Team Championship tournament match

This should be a rock solid match.

    Jerry Lynn vs. Chris Sabin

    Julio Dinero vs. The Sandman

    CM Punk vs. Chris Vaughn

Good to see Chris Vaughn on the main show. I'm sure he's losing but I think he's got serious blue chipper potential and Punk should get a decent match out of him.
