    BREAKING: JARRETT BUYS WCW

    Wednesday, March 28, 2001

A cross-promotional press conference led by Jerry Jarrett, J.J. Dillon, Lenita Erickson, Turner Entertainment president Brad Siegel and Fox Sports Net executive vice president George Greenberg today revealed the sale of World Championship Wrestling’s brand, tape library and other associated intellectual properties to J Sports & Entertainment, LLC and the imminent debut of a new wrestling show on Fox Sports Net in May.

Harkening back to the days of Jim Crockett Promotions, WCW will present a new one-hour programme named after the company itself - World Championship Wrestling - every Saturday at 6:05pm EST starting on May 19.

Jarrett, Dillon and Erickson each own a minority stake in J Sports & Entertainment, LLC and will serve as executive vice presidents. They will control all day-to-day operations related to the company’s wrestling programming.

The trio will answer directly to a consortium of anonymous financial backers. Rumoured names include Ultimate Fighting Championship co-founder Bob Meyrowitz, Randy Savage and various groups from Germany and Japan.

One significant major backer is believed to be investment banker John Corcoran, who previously worked in the wrestling industry as a consultant to the American Wrestling Association.

While Jarrett and Dillon are known entities in the wrestling industry, Erickson’s prominent role in the company has shocked many.

Erickson has been under contract to WCW since last October. In 1999, she pioneered and anchored a female-driven talk show on TNN with Olympics swimmer Dara Torres, NASCAR reporter Jamie Little and Playboy model Lauren Michelle Hill. While negotiating the talk show’s broadcasting rights with multiple top sport networks – including ESPN, ABC Sports, NBC Sports, CBS Sports and MTV Sports – she met Greenberg.

New Turner Broadcasting CEO and chairman Jamie Kellner made the decision to cancel all wrestling programming on TBS over the Christmas and holiday season, severely limiting interest from other potential buyers at the peak of sale negotiations. However, WCW’s new ownership group were able to verbally agree to a new broadcasting deal with Fox Sports Net before the completion of the sale through Erickson’s pre-existing relationship with Greenberg.

While answering questions from the media, Greenberg said: “Jerry and J.J. both possess a remarkable understanding of the wrestling business from a production and operational standpoint, while Lenita is an excellent television producer as seen with her successful talk show.

“I think their unified vision of how they want professional wrestling to be presented will be widely accepted by the Fox Sports Net audience. I fully anticipate a healthy and long-standing relationship between WCW and our network.”

Erickson quickly shot down a question about World Wrestling Federation owner Vince McMahon’s attempt to purchase WCW and the famous Monday Night Wars between the two companies could be reignited: “We have no interest in any competition right now. We are solely focused on establishing our talent, establishing our product and establishing our programming.

“There is no war. Simple as that.”

Ending the press conference, Jarrett said: “We are incredibly excited to present a fresh wrestling product to the most loyal fans in the world: WCW fans.

“We want to thank Mr. Siegel and Turner Entertainment for this business deal and Mr. Greenberg and Fox Sports Net for this opportunity.

“We hope all of WCW’s loyal fans will join us on our new journey on Saturday nights. We promise to deliver total, nonstop action.”

The future of WCW looked more uncertain than ever as Ric Flair and Sting embraced to end the final Monday Nitro two days ago, but it seems the company has been handed a new lifeline under new ownership.

Admin: Hello! I'm Oliver. This is an alternate reality save in which a consortium led by Jerry Jarrett, J.J. Dillon and Lenita Erickson purchased WCW from under the nose of Vince McMahon. The background of this save is heavily inspired by the NITRO: The Incredible Rise and Inevitable Collapse of Ted Turner's WCW book by Guy Evans, which I would highly recommend to all wrestling fans. I think I'm going to write another background post or two before diving into the first episode of World Championship Wrestling, although I've already booked the first four episodes in the game. Until then, I hope this teaser is intriguing enough to get a few people interested!

Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI vs Ryusuke Taguchi & Yota Tsuji

Gabriel Kidd & Tiger Mask vs Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima

  14. One of the main storylines I had planned in my TEW 2016 NJPW save was building up to SANADA finally getting his win over Okada at the Wrestle Kingdom main event and I purposefully kept them apart in all tournaments. Now that he has that win, while Okada losing is always going to be a big deal I don't know if it'd be too crazy.

This is completely fair, last year's G1 totally slipped my mind. You've put together an immense final eight here, these predictions were excruciatingly difficult and I can honestly see all four tournament matches going either way.

NJ Cup Round 2 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Shingo Takagi

NJ Cup Round 2 - Minoru Suzuki vs EVIL

  16. <p>NJ Cup Round 1 - <strong>Kazuchika Okada</strong> vs YOSHI-HASHI</p><p> </p><p>

    NJ Cup Round 1 - <strong>Zack Sabre Jr</strong> vs SANADA</p><p> </p><p>

    NJ Cup Round 1 - <strong>Kota Ibushi</strong> vs Toru Yano</p><p> </p><p>

    NJ Cup Round 1 - Satoshi Kojima vs <strong>Tomohiro Ishii</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, BUSHI, Shingo Takagi & Hiromu Takahashi</strong> vs Hiroshi Tanahashi, Ryusuke Taguchi, Yuji Nagata, Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma</p><p> </p><p>

    <strong>Yoshinobu Kanemaru</strong> vs Yuya Uemura</p><p> </p><p>

    Gabriel Kidd vs <strong>Taiji Ishimori</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Really tricky one.. I don't think SANADA can take another loss to Okada, but I don't think giving SANADA his big win in the second round the NJC is the right setting. With that said, I'm going with ZSJ (by a hair).</em></p>

  17. Really enjoyed GAB and the following Nitro! I'm particularly excited for the tag team division. Douglas and O'Haire winning the belts and Los Guerreros joining the fray really feels like a big shakeup to me.

It won't be, for two reasons.

    A) Austin just got driven from WCW in February. I think more time needs to pass before he potentially shows up again.

    B) A match of that magnitude needs more build-up than that. When that happens, it's going to be a big deal. ;)

Two very fair reasons, both of which I ultimately agree with. No bother, I'll just pencil Austin in to win next year's Mayhem instead :p

-Before the show, Goldberg worked on psychology with Dan Maff

-The lack of selling and psychology really hurt the Goldberg/Mortis main event.

I got a kick out of this lol

  18. Impact World Championship

Sami Callihan {C} vs. Rob Van Dam

I think we're heading towards Sami vs. Tessa III at Slammiversary

    X Division Championship

Ace Austin {C} vs. Kid Kash

    Impact World Tag Championship

The North {C} vs. The Hot Shots vs. Glenn Gilbertti/Johnny Swinger vs. The Rascalz (Trey/Wentz)

    Best of Three

    Series Tied

    Eddie Edwards vs. Michael Elgin

Going for a non-finish here, something like a time limit draw or double count-out

    Kylie Rae vs. Madison Rayne

    Hernandez vs. Moose

oVe (Fulton and The Crists) vs. Rhino/Sabu/Tommy Dreamer

Bonus: There is a match added to the show, it features a currently employed roster member who made his TNA debut in the first five years of the companies existence, who is it?

I'm going to have to agree with Petey Williams

  19. The Shooting Stars vs. Jung Dragons vs. Made in Italy

    AJ Styles vs. Prince Devitt

Chavo Guerrero Jr. vs. Eddie Guerrero

Shane Helms vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (©) for the World Television Championship

Rey Mysterio Jr. and Konnan vs. The Dangerous Alliance (O’Haire and Douglas)

    Chris Jericho vs. Brian Kendrick

Steenerico vs. True Heroes (©) for the World Tag Team Championship

Steven Regal vs. Bryan Danielson (©) for the United States Heavyweight Championship

    Goldberg vs. The Unnatural

King Corino vs. CM Punk (©) for the World Heavyweight Championship

How many championships will change hands? Two

What will be the match of the night? King Corino vs. CM Punk

TIEBREAKER: What will be the match time for the main event (minutes and seconds)? 22:16

BONUS: Who will be the next World Heavyweight Champion? Bryan Danielson

I love the new twist with the NJPW alliance. Koji Kanemoto in WCW sounds great. Steve Austin vs. Kensuke Sasaki for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship is absolutely epic, too.

    Speaking of...

That doesn't mean you couldn't see the IWGP Heavyweight champion himself pop up in WCW, though...

    ***GLASS SHATTERING INTENSIFIES***

(The Japan Supershow main event should absolutely be CM Punk vs. Steve Austin, just saying)

  20. <p><strong>Steenerico</strong> vs. Calgary Bulldogs</p><p> </p><p>

Volador Jr. vs. <strong>TAKA (©)</strong> for the World Cruiserweight Championship</p><p> </p><p>

Mortis vs. <strong>CM Punk (©)</strong> for the World Heavyweight Championship</p><p> </p><p>

The 30 Man Mayhem match, with the winner challenging for the World championship at the Great American Bash:</p><p>

    -Runner up: <strong>Lance Storm</strong></p><p>

    -Winner: <strong>Chris Jericho</strong></p><p> </p><p>

What will be match of the night? <strong>Mortis vs. CM Punk (©) for the World Heavyweight Championship</strong></p><p> </p><p>

  21. <p><p>Sami Callihan {C} vs. <strong>Tessa Blanchard</strong></p><p> </p><p></p><p>

    <strong>Ace Austin {C}</strong> vs. Trey</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

    <strong>The North {C}</strong> vs. Willie Mack</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

<strong>Taya Valkyrie {C}</strong> vs. Jordynne Grace vs. ODB</p><p></p><p>

<em>Taya pins ODB here, allowing Grace to get her true moment in a future singles match</em></p><p> </p><p></p><p>

    Rhino vs. <strong>Moose</strong></p><p> </p><p></p><p>

    Ken Shamrock vs. <strong>Madman Fulton</strong></p><p></p><p>

<em>This could go a long way toward establishing Fulton, and Shamrock can be protected by taking the loss via stoppage rather than pinfall or submission</em></p><p> </p><p></p><p>

    Daga vs. <strong>Rob Van Dam</strong></p><p></p><p>

<em>I really like Daga, but I think giving RVD a PPV win with his new heel character could help</em></p><p> </p><p></p><p>

    <strong>Eddie Edwards</strong> vs. Michael Elgin</p><p></p><p>

<em>After the Tessa controversy, I wondered if Impact would have Eddie turn heel and cash-in on Tessa at Hard to Kill... I'll double down on that theory here</em></p></p>

  22. WCW World Heavyweight Championship

"Big Sexy" Kevin Nash © vs. Rey Misterio Jr.

Comment: I've been going back and forth on this one. I know Nash is the much bigger star, but something keeps telling me Rey is gonna pick up the win. Let's roll the dice!
