Crychon Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I just got done watching the final episode of Twin Peaks, still need to watch the Firewalk, but I must say, damnfine series. Pretty much every episode had crazy twists and turns, interesting characters (for the most part), and I always couldn't wait to watch the next episode, though, I was kind of let down when there weren't anymore episodes to watch. There were times where it did get a little too weird, but eh, David Lynch was involved. I'd have to say that it ranks up there as one of my favorites. I give it a big Dale Cooper thumbs up. panix04 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 i never really caught the show, i could be wrong but i don't think it ever caught on in the UK. Didn't it have David Duchovny in it at some point? Either way you make it sound pretty good, what was the premise behind the show?
Moe Hunter Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Yeah, Dave Duchovny showed up for a few episodes as a cross-dressing federal agent. The premise of the show was FBI Agent Dale Cooper is called into the sleepy (Washington-state?) town of Twin Peaks, where there has been a murder which carries all the signs of a previous case he worked on. The victim was Laura Palmer - prom queen who had a connection with practically everyone in town. What everyone figured the show was about, was solely Cooper trying to solve the murder case, but that wasn't so. It played out like a soap opera except it was a great show. Everyone had their dirty secrets and motives for doing weird things. Like has been said, every episode had something crazy and awesome about it, and you really can't wait to see what happens next. Even now, 15+ years after it's all over, people are trying to make the most sense possible out of all the mysteries (a lot of them left open because the show was cancelled prematurely). Crychon, the prequel movie FWWM is excellent and quite a refreshing take on the series. For instance, swearing and nudity are in it, simply because it's a movie and not a TV show in the early 90s. It really allows them to delve into the relationship between Laura and her killer, hints at a lot of what Mike and Bob were always talking about, shows us more of Cooper's deal, and of course goes over the last 7 days of Laura's life. Also look out for appearances by Kiefer Sutherland, Chris Isaak and David Bowie!

He was so ugly growing up that I had to smack him around!!! :p All kidding aside, that is spooky how much your avatar looks like him..
panix04 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 i look different in every picture of me ever taken. Just in case you wanted a recent comparison picture, here is me on my trip to Alton Towers last weekend - notice the slightly dazed look in my eyes, thats what Absynth will do to ya! wooodaddy Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 yeah, you still favor him a lot except he's going bald.

James Casey Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I greatly enjoyed the revival we had in the UK around '97 when it was shown on Channel 5. A friend and I would sit down after every episode and try and work out who the killer was. But yeah, a lot of it was just messing with people's heads, and it was only tangentially about the murders. Mainly it was about damn fine pie...
TCP1 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Ah Panix, you said that you were drinking Absinthe, yet clearly in your hand is a bottle of Smirnoff Ice. I call, Lady Drinker on you! As for Twin Peaks, would people suggest buying it on DVD?
panix04 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 actually if you look at the hand it belongs to Dave! By the time we reached the nightclub, i pretty much stopped drinking. After a full night of drinking just about any drink you care to mention, we hit Alton Towers in a very rough state the following morning and followed that up with another heavy night on the pop. However i must concede on the 2nd night i did end up drinking blue WKD, i tend to switch over to the girly drinks when i get bloated! By the way, when i said the full spectrum of drinks i meant it, here is all the different bevarages consumes over the weekend: Lager Bitter Cider - traditional and fizzy stuff Absinthe Blue WKD Tofee Vodka Pernod Sambuka Missisipi Mudcakes (whatever the hell they are!) Gin and tonic (i know its kind of gay, but it was part of a drinking game we were playing, were if you didn't go to the bar when drinks were ordered then you end up with what ever pitiful excuse for a drink the person paying could think of) plus several other vile shots, that i never found the name of! I left the midlands £120 worse off, with a splitting headache! Good times!

Yeah, you could kind of tell that it was cancelled prematurely as there were just so many loose ends, but in reality, I'm kind of glad there were so many, because last night I was going crazy trying to figure everythng out, and I actually like it when everything isn't all tied up and happy sometimes.
Crychon Posted March 28, 2007 Author Posted March 28, 2007
As for Twin Peaks, would people suggest buying it on DVD?
Well, from most sources I've seen, Season 1 has gone up ridiculously in price recently, and as there are only 6 episodes on it (and the pilot episode is sold separately, also for a ridiculous ammount) I'm not sure if it'd be worth buying at this point. I'm not sure if there are plans to rerelease season 1 so it includes the pilot or whatnot, but the cheapest version on Amazon right now is $66 for the pilot episode, and $129 for season 1, which is just insane. Season 2 has 22 great episodes, and they just released that, and I would recommend buying that, I got it from Netfliix, but I plan on buying it when I get some more extra cash, and I borrowed Season 1 from a friend a while ago. So I'd recommend probably to rent season 1 if you can somehow, unless you can find it for a decent price somewhere.
flamebrain Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I mark for Lynch so I definitely recommend buying the DVD TCP :) The real problem, as admitted by Lynch, is that people got too hung up on who killed Laura. It was never the point of the show, it was only meant to be our way into the town (through Coop). Lynch's attempt at soap is hilarious in places and terrifying in others, he has a good feel for small town idiosyncracies. The second series suffers from less input by the man himself and, in my opinion, tries too hard to be weird that it almost descends into parody. It also marks the point that the show was squashed under the whodunnit fascination. That said, the first series will always be among my favourite all time shows (with The Prisoner, American Gothic, The X-Files and, of course, Quincy!!). Fire Walk With me is a different beast, without TV constraints Lynch can go all out again and some people didn't like what he did with the characters that many got so attatched to from the show. Its pretty brutal and the charm of Twin Peaks is pushed to one side really in favour of unsettling menace. I can understand how that would put some people off but I also love the film on its own merits, its a great film even outwith the context of the series and may actually work better that way. Definitely worth seeing if only for another fix of the town and its inhabitants, just be prepared for a "culture shock" as it were. :)
Moe Hunter Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 First tip to anyone looking to get in to the series: DO NOT buy the Pilot seperately. It's an extended version which takes away from the rest of the series in that it gives a (somewhat alternate) explanation of the killer right there and then. It was originally distributed as a stand-alone TV Movie for countries who didn't want the whole series IIRC. Kind of like how Mulholland Dr. ended up. I thoroughly recommend watching the whole series - if you can find it on rental DVDs (1st season should be easy enough to find), go for it. Last time I checked there were no official DVDs for Season 2. I saw the first seven episodes of S2 on a Video set that claimed it was the enitrety of S2 (which is much closer to 20 odd eps), then *cough*downloaded*cough* the rest as it is damn near impossible to find otherwise.
Crychon Posted March 29, 2007 Author Posted March 29, 2007 Actually, it's available on Netflix/Amazon now. EDIT: Or it will be April 3 http://www.amazon.com/Twin-Peaks-Second-Kyle-MacLachlan/dp/B000M3439E/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-5102734-1588622?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1175181540&sr=8-1
