Undertaker666 Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 As the title says, what are your most loved and hated 'one hit wonders' that were featured in adverts, TV or movies so they dominated the charts and then the artist/band fell into obscurity? Favourite Stiltskin - Inside (great rock out song) Hated Babylon Zoo - Spaceman ("Babylon Zoo will change the face of music forever" - quote from the lead singer. Ha! :p) Mr Oizo - Flat Beats (*whub-whub-whub-whub, whub-whub-whub-whub*) That damn CRAZY FROG!!!!!
Travis Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 That one "I'd stop the world and melt with you" song. I forgot who did it as it was pretty much a one hit wonder. I can't think of any one hit wonders that I absolutely hated. Maybe that Love Shack song but I can't really think of any.
mad5226 Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Can't think of any hated ones but I loved the one "I'm to Sexy" song...ha classic
mjdgoldeneye Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007
I can't think of any one hit wonders that I absolutely hated. Maybe that Love Shack song but I can't really think of any.
Love Shack is by the B52's, and they aren't one hit wonders! They're weird though... (Look up "My Own Private Idaho" and "Rock Lobster"...) I'd say that I hate that one '90s song by (I think) a band called The New Radicals. SOOO '90s that it isn't funny (one step below Sugar Ray...). I'd say my favorite was the cover of Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm. (Are they a one hit wonder? I've never heard from them since in the U.S. at least...)
Raveneffect21 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 My favorite one hit wonder is No Rain By Blind Melon, and it sucks that they were one hit wonder's because they have a catalouge of great music, and I also like Epic By Faith No More if you can consider Epic there only hit, but I think Mid Life Crisis was a hit so they don't count.
Rob4590 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Couple of my faves - Breakfast at Tiffanys by Deep Blue Something, and one of my all time fave songs, Black Velvet by Alannah Myles (although strictly she did have a follow up song make the Top 40 here in the UK, but Black Velvet is the only one that anyone remembers) As for ones that I hate - well lets be honest, if it was their only hit and I hated it, why the hell would I want to remember it ?? :p
Moe Hunter Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 First one that came to mind - Deep Blue Something "Breakfast at Tiffany's" - good taste, Rob! I'm much the same about hates as well - but then Crazy Frog was mentioned, which I absolutely detest. I can't even listen to the original (good) version from Beverly Hills Cop and Max Headroom without hearing that retarded "bing bing"! Other 1HW's I like? Meredith Brooks' "Bitch" OMC "How Bizzare" (NZ classic!) I know there's more, but damned if I can recall them right now!
panix04 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007
I'd say my favorite was the cover of Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm. (Are they a one hit wonder? Well im assuming it did, it was conatantly on the Keraang channel here in the UK. Like: Raise your hands - reef (im sure they had other stuff, but none of it was a hit - as far as im aware) 3 Lions - Baddiel and Skinner, best football song ever - sorry Chas and Dave I touch my self - the diviynls i like a lot of the stuff already mentioned too, the new radicalz, deep blue something etc. Mid ninetys music was a fantastic blend of britpop, dance, rave and soft rock (and Scatman John!) Dreamer - Livin Joy Dislike: Mr Blobby pretty much any novelty recored that didnt invlove Peter Kay (Garlic bread?) anything that took a classic track and recorded the lyrics in a sqeeky voice and pasted them onto a dance track. FFS Crowded house do not need covering, Dont Dream its over is a classic without having a thunping beat!

Like someone said before "Love Shack" was by the B-52's who are a legendary band with a huge catalog, albeit with a unique sound... One hit wonders I "hate": insert rap/hip hop "song" here________. A genre of one hit wonders that all sound the same...
still71 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007
Although not as big a hit, movies there follow up single done OK in the charts. Well im assuming it did, it was conatantly on the Keraang channel here in the UK.
Movies was the first single, the Smooth Criminal cover was the follow up. They've had a couple of singles off their second major label album since... I know those dudes, we're from the same area, and used to play shows together like 10 years ago...
Undertaker666 Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 Ha! I've been reminded of some more after reading through these posts: Like Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You (Friends theme tune) Alannah Myles - Black Velvet Meredith Brooks - Bitch Reef - Place Your Hands (Panix: it's "Place Your Hands" not "Raise Your Hands", coincidentally I had this argument the other day! :p) The Divinyls - I Touch Myself Scatman John!!!!! (I've got the follow up single, Scatman's World, too :D) Hate Mr Blobby - The Blobby Song Teletubbies - The Teletubbie Song The Cartoonz - Witchdoctor (anyone remember them? *ting-tang-walla-walla-bing-bang* Awful!!!) Aqua - Barbie Girl (I know they had a follow up, Doctor Jones, but that was it and they were both awful)
Movies was the first single, the Smooth Criminal cover was the follow up. They've had a couple of singles off their second major label album since...
Smooth Criminal was released first over here. After Movies was released they haven't been heard of since.
panix04 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 it is indeed place your hands. Sorry t'was a long weekend good sir.
Guest The Aussie Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 The Divinyls were not one hit wonders, they had six albums and their biggest hit wasn't even I Touch Myself. You don't remember Pleasure & Pain? You might as well have said that The Clash were one hit wonders.
Undertaker666 Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 The Clash only did London Calling didn't they? ;) It's not a case of 'remembering' Pleasure & Pain, i've just listened to it on YouTube and i've never ever heard it before! They might've been big 'down under' but I don't think they were ever big here. The only Divinyls song I know is I Touch Myself.
Guest The Aussie Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Sarcasm on the Clash one, ya know? I have three of their albums at home.
Undertaker666 Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 Very much sarcasm! I love The Clash: Rock The Casbah, Guns of Brixton, I Fought The Law, Should I Stay or Should I Go, Clampdown, Somebody Got Murdered etc. :D
panix04 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 the divynals were an australian band, but here in the UK they flopped like my man parts when i see mae young and the fabulous moolah. The Clash do indeed kick ass though! I do own the Duvynals greatest hits albumn and i have to admit its pretty good. The lead singer has one of the better female voices i have heard.
Clarity Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007
Ha! After Movies was released they haven't been heard of since.
They released a second album with a single called Attitude but if i remember rightly they were involved in a big bus crash in early 2002 (i think) which injured the singer badly.. I think they are still going though
Undertaker666 Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 Their cover of Smooth Criminal was nowhere near as good as the original. Lets face it, Alien Ant Farm were a bit crap! :D
panix04 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 nooooo!!!!!! Usually i hate covers, really hate 'em. But i think AAF nailed smooth criminal. You want a bad coer version look no further than Rolf Harris murdering the crap out of bohemiam rhapsody!
Undertaker666 Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 Michael Jackson may be nuttier than a fruitcake (errr, nutcake?) but he's made some classic songs in the past that only he can do. MJ 1 - AAF 0
panix04 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 the AAF video to smooth criminal had a wrestling ring in it! MJ 1 - AAF 1 We are about to hyperdrive to the realm of off topic here gents, thank goodness this is the dog pound!
Undertaker666 Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 What's the video got to do with how good the song is?! Anyway, Michael Jackson's video had a bar stocked up with drinkies in it. And a pool table. MJ 3 vs AAF -1 (minus one for STEALING the moonwalk for use in their video! :p)
panix04 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 michael Jackson has a fake nose, Jacko -1. He has been acused of inappropriate behavior towards children and despite being found innocent, lets be honest he had a fun fair in his back garden, that is essentially the next stage on from "do you want a sweetie little boy?" Jacko -1 You can tell what race AAF are just by looking at them AAF +1. I'm fairly sure that Jack half-inched moon walking from Neil Armstrong so Jaco -1 OK, so that makes for a 0-0 draw, but what the hey!
Undertaker666 Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 AAF are so untalented that they need to use other people's songs to get a hit. AAF -1 Who's video had lots of small children in, Jacko's or AAF's? AAF -1 "You can tell what race AAF are just by looking at them". That's right, they're Munchkins. AAF -1 The moon landings were fake so Armstrong never walked on the moon. MJ +1 MJ 1 vs AAF -3
