PeterHilton Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Busy with the 75 CVerse Mod so only half watched the show, but it made me nuts during the main event when JR and Lawler tried to sell thefact that Booker and Lashley had never faced each other. I know they're older and they don;'t have the Joey Styles memory, but really??? Neither man had any recollection of the Booker/Lashley feud that lasted for months on SD? Or the fact that Booker became King by beating Lashley??? ah well...the main event was still solid, Kennedy gave a good promo, it looks as though they are building to Umaga/Foley, and it loks like we are going to get a whodunnit where Steph make slife hell for the faces because she thinks they blew up Vince. Meh. Thoughts?
still71 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 wow... must have been the WWE selective memory syndrome...
Guest The Aussie Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Remember, It hadn't been mentioned in the WWE for a little while, It was obviously fair go in their opinion.
Zobeto227 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 no one watches Smackdown so no one would know any better... haha jk! But sometimes I wonder if the WWE thinks that.
PeterHilton Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 Honestly I don't believe it was one of those storyline hype comments. i mean, I don't think they're building towards another Lashley/Booker feud. I think that JR and Lawler don't watch much (if any) of the WWE outside of Raw so they really didn't know those two feueded for a solid 3-4 months on Smackdown. After the last draft, JR didn't even know Carlito's name.

JR and King definitely watch every show, and they work for the damn company, they probably know what's going on, plus what they said about Booker and Lashley was probably told to them, or else they wouldn't have said it. If they weren't supposed to say it, they would have been told through their headphones to correct themselves right after.

They constantly make mistakes on calling the moves. They rarely spend much time selling the midcard guys, instead focusing on hype duty. Whenever you see that rare Heat guy move up to Raw, JR and Lawler usuaully have no clue about what the guy is doing. And they almost never make any storyline reference older than a few months. JR calls a great match. I've never been a fan of Lawler but I see his appeal. But neither one is what I would call an "educated" announcer. They made a mistake. Probably because, at their age and with their reputation, neither guy pays attention to anything outside Raw and their PPVs.

It added nothing to the match. Why not just calmly say, "I believe they faced each other when both men were on Smackdown?" Who knew criticizing JR was so sacrilegous?
Moe Hunter Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Remember, at RR07 King said he'd NEVER seen HBK vs Undertaker. That's just insane. The Casket match 9 years earlier at the Rumble, the very first HIAC match... they had quite a high profile feud!
PeterHilton Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 That's true. Y'know what..I was probably wrong. Lawler doesn't watch anything other than raw and JR is probably just old and forgetful. That makes far more sense than someone in production told them to say it.
wolfwwe Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 They are told to do all those things you said. They don't know about guys from heat that come up, because at their on-screen position they are pretty much just like us. They have to play it off like they don't know who those guys are. If they weren't supposed to do that, I'm sure they could tell you all about Santino Marella's past. They are doing their job very well, and you just don't know what you're talking about.

JR & King make lots of mistakes in a given month. It doesn't make them less compelling as an announce team (in my view) but it does kinda chip away at their credibility. I'd still rather listen to those two rather than Whiney Cole & JBL or Mike Tenay (who I love) & Don West (who I despise). That doesn't mean they're Papal candidates or otherwise infallible.

But I have an equal right to point out when you say things that are factually incorrect. Let me break it down. Between May 06 at Judgment Day and November of the same year, Booker T faced Lashley a total of a dozen times, including twice on PPVs and once on a SNME. That feud lasted seven months. Booker T became King Booker by beating Lashley. So either ... A) The WWE is astronomically stupid and one of the producers thought they would tell JR to talk about how those two had never met before even though it is a throwaway line and added nothing to the match. OR!!!!!!!..... B) JR is an older guy with a bad memory who made a mistake by agreeing with Jerry Lawler who probably doesn't watch that much of the product since he spends six days out of the week in Memphis doing his own thing. I don't know. I'm sure it BOGGLES THE MIND that Lawler or JR could've made an error. But I'm going to go with B and hopefully the next time those two screw up it won't blow a hole in the space continuum.

It's like he feels he has to amp up the energy to keep up with Don West so they both end up just yelling at the top of their lungs. It's like bad AM talk radio.
still71 Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Come on. We all know JR and The King's on air mistake was just that, and went uncorrected on air, because Vince McMahon is dead and therefore unable to correct them in the headsets...;) I love the view that everything JR and King say is scripted. Man, if that's true, can somebody, anybody, pleeaasee script boring Tenay and retard West, for the sake of me and the 10 other people who occasionally watch Impact...

Don is looking down at his paper and screaming "Someone get a camera back there!" directly after a camera *was* there. Looked to me like they started showing it, then realised what Don was supposed to say (which he did), cut to him saying it and then back to the action as though they were responding to him. In an effort to protect a minor element of kayfabe they exposed another.

It reminds me of one Gorilla Monsoon. I've never been a fan of the Joey Styles "lets call every move under the sun" style of play by play. I prefer an announcer who tells the story. And I can't stand the Tenay hard selling either. Tenay - if it was the greatest move ever in the greatest match ever, then it wouldn't be booked for 3 minute match on a cable show that barely draws better ratings than "America's Deadliest Car Chases". I like JR - though I wasn't a fan at all pre-1995 - couldn't stand him in WCW. But just like a good wine he he's gotten better with age. A lot of moves have different names depending on the Contenent, Country, or Region they are performed in. Though the type of move it is (ie. "modified suplex") does stay the same.

The times when JR not calling moves by its name REALLY bothers me is when its a specific move in a wrestler's arsenal and he never quite picks it up. Like John Cena's "Throwback." He always calls it some sort of neckbreaker. It's not a huge deal, and JR is a helluva storyteller which is his main purpose, but its the little thing like that that gets a guy over and shows the announcer has really done their homework. I mean, would the People's Elbow been as cool if he'd constantly called it " a modified elbow drop ?" ALSO...I really wish more people had heard Tenay in WCW. He was great working between Schiavone's shilling and whoever was on play by play. Really, he's just not best suited to be the main PBP guy..especially when yelling over West.
Moe Hunter Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I loved Tenay/Heenan and barely tolerated Schiavone. Now Tenay seems to have taken over Skeev's old habit of calling everything the best there ever was, is or will be - and Bret Hart is nowhere to be found! Ah, so many memories of various Nitros that were "The most important night in the history of our sport/industry"...

Tenay has a lot of wrestling knowlege, and in WCW he was able to just interject it here and there, but he's a horrific play by play guy. He makes Josh Matthews look talented... And don't get me started on West. Who the hell's idea was it to have some Home Shopping Network hack who has no wrestling knowlege be the color guy. I've heard more intelligent banter come from the guest musicians they let do play by play on WSX. Then again, I guess when you have to hard sell people to even watch your product, you might as well have a dude who's career is overhyping and selling junk on tv...
