Still confused after all these years

I've played no less than 30 seasons of BBCF, and recruiting still confuses me.

I recently started a new league, choosing Troy as I like the challenge of building up a poor team into a competitive one. My first season I was competitive; second season I won the conference but lost the bowl game. After the first season, I dropped most of the crappiest guys on the roster, hoping that recruits would see a higher chance to play and be more willing to sign during the second recruiting season. That didn't happen! I only have 2 DEs on my roster (one of them is terrible), but throughout this second recruiting season I had ZERO DEs interested in playing for me. I think the highest interest I had from a DE was a 4 or 5, and that was after recruiting them to the max each week and offering early. I even upgraded my DC just before recruiting (hes now green for scout DL and yellow for developing DL). So NOTHING I did made any difference for recruiting at that position. What does it take?

I also noted that getting the pitch right for a player with low interest makes absolutely no difference. With this team I usually only have interest from guys ranked 1500+. But to try to improve my squad I went heavily after guys in the 1100-1500 range. Some of those guys had no "others" interested in them even in week 17, and I had recruited them to the max for at least 7 weeks, had early scholarships on them, and got the correct pitch during the first 2 or 3 weeks. Still they had no interest (5 or below). I guess they'd prefer to work at McDonalds than play football for a team like mine, even though I won my division and went to a bowl game, and can offer them a starting position.

What am I missing?

Winning your conference is a good start, but you've got to sustain that success to start getting some three star prospects. Two star players are about what you're gonna get at the start of your dynasty.

One thing I've noticed is that it seems to be easier to recruit to a position where you have a star player. So maybe your DE's have not done as well in the past, so other good DE's don't want to play in that system.

On my current team, I could not even PAY an OLB to sign with me. However, ILB's line up to play behind Woodall who has been a real impact player in the middle of the field. So I signed 3 of them - then converted one to OLB (and Ross, a 3 star ILB is now listed as 2.5 out of a 4.5 potential - and getting some valuable playing time as a Freshman, even a couple starts due to injury).

I have the same problem trying to sign a DE. But for some reason, I had several good DT prospects knocking down my door (maybe because I had an All-American at that position last year). I signed 3 of them, and converted one to be a DE (then redshirted him so he can get used to his new position -- hopefully he sticks around). I was lucky enough to land a Juco DE last year, so Rodgers can learn by watching him and be ready to step into his postion next year.

I'm trying to worry less about the # of stars and more about the impact skills. That's helped me to land some steals. I haven't gotten any "true 5 star prospects", but one was elevated to 5 stars after he signed. Also had some 3 stars that were listed as 4's when they signed. My last class was ranked #2, but I'm not sure how.....nine 4-stars and ten 3-stars. It's either the sheer size of the class, or they look at potential since every 3 star has potential of 4 or better. All I know is that I got better at every position and built some depth, so I'm very happy. Now if some of the recruits would just sign earlier in the process instead of always waiting til halfway thru so I could breathe a little easier. ;)
