WOMEN’S LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION CHAMPION: Jenny DeNeuve (9-0) 1. Mizuki Watanabe (8-1) 2. Sayoko Ebisawa (17-3) 3. Alison Beattie (11-5) 4. Kirsten Page (9-4) 5. Yuya Shimizu (6-2) 6. April Watson (15-7) 7. Katarzyna Wojciechowska (9-5) 8. Taniko Uchiyama (7-4) 9. Gianna Russo (4-1) 10. Michelle Addams (4-3) The rest: Louise Clark (0-3) Kimie Igarashi (2-1) Jennifer Nash (2-0) Pamela O’Neill (2-1) Eiko Shiokawa (1-0) When the Women’s Division split, most people felt that the Lightweight Division was the lesser of the two. Jenny DeNeuve is the undefeated champion, with Mizuki Watanabe and former Women’s champion Sayoko Ebisawa right on her heels.

WOMEN’S HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION CHAMPION: Janinha (15-1) 1. Romi Takahashi (7-0) 2. Naora Kikuchi (11-2) 3. Chiyo Yanagimoto (10-2) 4. Phoebe Bergman (15-7) 5. Yutsuko Sasaki (8-5-1) 6. Haley Croft (6-1) 7. Sarah Vaughan (20-7) 8. Vicki Summers (10-3) 9. Hester Maclean (8-2-1) 10. Roz Wareing (8-4-1) The rest: Umeka Fujiwara (4-0) Simone King (6-4) Lisa Labone (2-1) Irene Rodriguez (0-1) Veronika Sablikova (4-3) Hanako Shimizu (3-1) Janinha defeated Women’s champion Sayoko Ebisawa in February and successfully defended the title three more times in 1997, earning the “Female Fighter of the Year” award. Undefeated top contender Romi Takahashi looms on the horizon, though.

LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION CHAMPION: Paulo Roberto Bezerra (12-1) 1. Marko Prochazka (12-3) 2. Carlos da Guia (8-0) 3. Go Yamamoto (15-2) 4. Teeratep Nutnum (8-1) 5. Ricardo Fernandes (18-8) 6. Sean Morrison (13-5) 7. Atep of Indonesia (5-0) 8. Luke Hilton (5-3) 9. Chojiro Goto (10-3) 10. Giovani Silva (21-12) The rest: Cory Brewer (7-7-1) Rafael Clean (0-0) Rodolphe Gygax (16-10) Jamie Hewitt (2-2) Gene Oakley (0-0) Marcus Speed (2-3) Paulo Roberto Bezerra defeated Go Yamamoto for the Lightweight title in March and successfully defended it two more times throughout the year. Up-and-coming Carlos da Guia and Atep of Indonesia look like they may have what it takes to challenge for the title. Overall, one of ALPHA-1’s weakest divisions; hopefully, newcomers Rafael Clean & Gene Oakley can provide some quality depth.

WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION CHAMPION: Kafu Bunya (13-3) 1. Peter Bracewell (19-7) 2. Nathan Chambers (7-1) 3. Ikku Funaki (8-3) 4. Julio Regueiro (10-1-1) 5. Claudio Palacios (11-4-1) 6. Jack Humphreys (13-3) 7. Gabriel Gallego (14-1) 8. Randy Carsley (6-1) 9. Truck Gleeson (7-1) 10. Noach Van Der Capellen (11-4) The rest: Darin Blood (4-1) Scott Gillespie (4-1) Agustin Gonzalez (4-1) Eli Harris (1-1) Fumiaki Hayashi (14-6) Callum Henson (5-2) Fujimaro Hidaka (2-3) Joe Hinchcliffe (12-6) Will Kane (7-2) Xie Ming (3-3) Simon Vine (7-6) Kafu Bunya went through contenders Fumiaki Hayashi and Claudio Palacios to move to the top of the list, then had to wait five months for champion Gabriel Gallego to recover from an injury before finally getting his title shot. One of ALPHA-1’s deepest divisions, top contenders Peter Bracewell and Ikku Funaki weren’t even ranked a year ago. There’s a wealth of veterans and youngsters all vying to get into the title mix.

MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION CHAMPION: Davis Spyrou (15-4) 1. Andrew Rush (14-1) 2. Uwe Maier (8-2) 3. Thorbjorn Rekdal (5-2-1) 4. Jim Carpenter (21-6-1) 5. Patrick Thomas (8-2) 6. Greg Atteveld (17-11) 7. Dan Halvorsen (23-13-2) 8. Ieyoshi Yama****a (11-6) 9. Bixente Fontaine (10-6) 10. Juro Fukazawa (8-2) The rest: Adam White (4-0) Phil Ball (7-10) Maarten De Vries (15-6) Jose Garcia (0-0) Tucker Plumm (14-8) Carl Ratcliffe (10-6) Yoshinobu Tanaka (8-17) It was a crazy year in the Middleweight Division – Juro Fukazawa and Maarten De Vries held the title during the year, but are currently on losing streaks that see them well out of the championship hunt at the start of 1998. Davis Spyrou seems to be the only one who can sustain a winning streak, carrying him to a 4-0 record during the year. Andrew Rush has worked his way back to being the No. 1 contender – right where he was at this time last year. Don’t be surprised if impressive youngster Adam White jumps up the list considerably during the year; he already holds victories over contenders Uwe Maier and Thorbjorn Rekdal.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION CHAMPION: Petey Mack (9-1) 1. Percy Catcher (9-2) 2. Leon Banks (13-4) 3. Gempachi Higa (11-6) 4. John Rivero (9-1) 5. Heiji Endo (10-2) 6. Roberto Aldez (20-4) 7. Christopher Sharp (10-3) 8. Faas Smit (6-1) 9. Anthony LeToussier (15-6) 10. Tadamasa Yamada (14-3) The rest: Zvonimir Asanovic (12-3) Ashley Ballard (4-3) Bill Brown (1-1) Aleksei Chekhov (8-4) Inejiro Chiba (20-6) Khru Duangjan (23-15) Curt Kitson (12-4) George Laurent (13-2) Nicolai Mickiewicz (9-4) Mike Watson (4-1) Another division with a wild year, as Tadamasa Yamada, Zvonimir Asanovic, and Anthony LeToussier all held the title during 2007, yet are a long ways away from getting a title shot now. Current champion Petey Mack and top contender Percy Catcher weren’t even on the ALPHA-1 roster a year ago.
