Mid-South Wrestling (DOTT): Watts' Way

Recommended Posts

In April 1983, Mid-South Wrestling was peaking. The owner and head booker, Bill Watts, was innovative and creative while their roster was bolstered with a talent-rich assortment of workers. At the top of the card was the Junkyard Dog, a fan favorite. The Junkyard Dog recently returned from a 90-day suspension imposed as per the stipulations of a tag team match in which the Dog, along with his partner Mr. Olympia, lost to the Ted Dibiase-led Rat Pack (Dibiase was joined by his cronies Matt Borne and Jim Duggan, the latter wearing a gorilla suit). Although suspended, Junkyard Dog had other plans, returning to the promotion under a mask and calling himself Stagger Lee, a mysterious newcomer. On Thanksgiving Night 1982, the Junkyard Dog, or rather Stagger Lee, got his revenge on the Rat Pack, pinning Dibiase to regain the North American Heavyweight Title (the promotion’s top belt). After the Junkyard Dog was reinstated, Stagger Lee’s title was declared vacant (the JYD and Stagger Lee couldn’t both be in Mid-South) and, in April 1983, remains so. Other top babyfaces on the Mid-South roster include the technically-gifted veteran Mr. Wrestling II and ‘Hacksaw’ Butch Reed. The territory’s top heel in April 1983 was the aforementioned Dibiase (voted the Most Hated Wrestler in a 1982 PWI poll), followed closely by his Rat Pack brethren. They were joined by a recently-turned Mr. Olympia, ‘Captain Redneck’ Dick Murdoch, and the Skandar Akbar-led stable called Devastation Incorporated with members including King Kong Bundy, Nikolai Volkoff, and Kamala the Ugandan Giant. The tag team titles recently changed hands when the team of Matt Borne and Ted Dibiase were upset (after a lengthy reign that included defenses against Andre the Giant and Tony Atlas as well as the Fabulous Freebirds) by the unlikely pairing of Mr. Wrestling II and Tiger Conway Jr. The tag team division, by and large, is dominated by short-term pairings of high-profile workers as there are very few tag team specialists in MSW. Among the lower card workers, ‘Dr. Death’ Steve Williams, Terry Taylor, and Magnum TA look to be promising babyfaces while ‘Wild’ Bill Irwin and ‘Nature Boy’ Buddy Landell could become lead heels. Despite a talent-rich roster, Mid-South Wrestling declined in the early 1980s, due in large part to economic downturn in Louisiana and the nationalization of Verne Gagne's AWA, Jim Crockett's Mid-Atlantic Wrestling, and Vince McMahon's WWF (who cartoonized many of Mid-South's stars). Can Watts keep the ball rolling despite the coming recession? Will Watts' Way survive? Stay tuned and find out. Our story begins in April of 1983 in the town of Shreveport, Louisiana at the Shreveport Gold Dome for the first episode of Mid-South Wrestling in April. Akbar took a microphone from ringside to address the crowd. Akbar: Silence! Rise and respect the homeland of one-half of the future tag team champions as Comrade Volkoff sings to you the Russian national anthem. Typically, Volkoff’s rendition of the National Anthem of the Soviet Union was booed loudly by the local crowd and interrupted by the appearance of the face team of Mr. Wrestling II and Tiger Conway Jr. The match itself went back and forth, with Volkoff starting off against, and overpowering, the less experienced Tiger Conway, isolating him in the heel corner and tagging in and out with Kendo Nagasaki, demonstrating excellent teamwork. After being worked over by the heels, Tiger managed to make the hot tag to Mr. Wrestling II. The veteran responded with a series of armdrags, sending both Volkoff and Nagasaki to the floor to confer with their manager. Following a brief back and forth between Nagasaki and Wrestling II, Wrestling II hit his Million Dollar Knee Lift, pinning the Japanese star before Nikolai could make the save. After the match, an incensed Akbar stood in the ring with his charges, vowing revenge. Kamala the Ugandan Giant w/handler Friday and manager Skandar Akbar Reed, wearing a yellow mesh shirt and headband along with white trunks, was already in the ring when Akbar and Friday led the African headhunter Kamala to the ring carrying, as always, his hunting spear and wearing a tribal war mask. In the ring, the two behemoths finally locked horns after circling one another for a minute, with Reed having the advantage. But a kick to the gut from Kalama sent Reed to the mat, where Kamala took advantage of his girth, wallowing on Reed in what can only be described as an African submission hold. Reed fought back gallantly, using a powerful forearm to knock down the African giant before throwing Kamala into the ropes as he set up for his patented flying shoulderblock. But Reed ran too close to Kamala’s manager, ‘General’ Akbar, who grabbed the foot of the Hacksaw, causing Reed to lose his momentum and fall unceremoniously in the center of the ring. Kamala took advantage of the downed Reed, landing on him with a huge splash for the pinfall. Winner: Kamala the Ugandan Giant via Splash (C) ---------- After the match, Jim Ross announced that next week, Bill Watts would make an announcement concerning the North American Title, vacant since Stagger Lee left the promotion earlier in the year. Junkyard Dog v. ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan In the night’s main event, Rat Pack member Jim Duggan was introduced first to boos from the Shreveport residents. Local hero Junkyard Dog, however, was greeted with praise from the Louisiana faithful, as many of the fans at ringside started a “Junkyard Dog” chant. JYD: Oh its so good to be in Shreveport tonight baby! And no one does Shreveport like the Dog. Jim Duggan, tonight I get my payback baby. Tonight its just you and me. And baby I’m gonna show you what it means to get bitten…by…a…Junkyard…Dog! Inside the ring, the greenness of Duggan showed, as the brawler tried everything in his arsenal to fight off the Junkyard Dog, but to no avail. The Dog sidestepped an attempted spear from Duggan (the same move that had cost him the North American Title in the Fall of 1982) and countered with his trademark Thump Powerslam for the victory. Winner: Junkyard Dog via Thump Powerslam (Hype: B: Match C-) After the match, Jim Duggan’s running mate, Ted Dibiase, ran down to the ring and attacked the victorious Junkyard Dog, sending him sprawling to the pavement outside the ring as Mid-South Wrestling went off the air. Watts: Tonight, I have an important announcement to make concerning the future of the North American Heavyweight Championship. As you know, good ol’ Stagger Lee had to vacate the belt earlier this year and, since then, Mid-South has been without a North American champion. That will end in less than three weeks at the New Orleans Fieldhouse when there will be a North American Title Tournament to decide the new champion. The brackets have been decided on and the tournament will feature the following matchups. The Junkyard Dog will battle Kamala, Butch Reed will square off against Mr. Olympia, Mr. Wrestling II faces Jim Duggan, and Ted Dibiase fights Steve ‘Dr. Death’ Williams. The winners will then advance in a single elimination tournament until, by the end of that evening, we will have a new North American Champion! Wild Bill came out second, wearing blue jeans and a cowboy hat, carrying a bullwhip to the ring. He argued with the same fans that only moments before welcomed TA to Lake Charles. Inside the ring, Irwin was much more content brawling than trying to outwrestle the younger, more active TA. Despite signs of life from Magnum TA, Irwin’s experience proved the difference as Wild Bill won the match by using his feet on the ropes for leverage. After the match, Irwin grabbed his bullrope and escaped quickly to the back, hassling fans ringside the whole way back while TA argued with the referee about Irwin’s cheating tactics. Steve Williams emerged second, wearing red trunks and a tight-fitting Oklahoma University t-shirt. Inside the ring, Murdoch did everything in his power to avoid locking up with Dr. Death, a physically gifted former All-American at Oklahoma. When Dr. Death did get a hold of Murdoch, he grounded the grizzled veteran, frustrating Captain Redneck. But despite trying to constantly escape from Dr. Death, it looked like Murdoch was going to snatch a victory. However, his attempted piledriver was reversed into a backdrop by the former All-American. Dr. Death followed the move with a Running Powerslam, picking up the somewhat surprising victory. After the match, an enraged Murdoch slapped a fan at ringside (obviously a plant) before jawing at others on his way to the back, promising revenge. He kept looking backwards, up the ramp, as if he expected someone to be following. He took a microphone from ringside and introduced his tag team partner – ‘Hacksaw’ Butch Reed. But Reed didn’t show. Again, the JYD announced Reed as his mystery partner and, once again, Reed failed to show. JYD, not deterred, signaled to Dibiase and Duggan that he would take them both on and they complied. JYD tried his best to win this handicap match, even hitting the Thump Powerslam on Duggan before Dibiase could break the count. But the Rat Pack duo was too much for the Dog, as Duggan pinned JYD following a brutal spear. Winners: Ted Dibiase and Jim Duggan via Spear (C) As Mid-South went off the air, Boyd Pierce and Jim Ross were still at a loss for what happened to Butch Reed and why he didn’t join Junkyard Dog in the ring for their tag team match tonight. The match itself was more of a brawl than a wrestling match, with all four men getting in relatively equal offense, even Magnum TA hanging with the more experienced, stronger wrestlers. After Dr. Death hit a clothesline that sent Irwin over the top rope, Doc followed after, leaving Magnum TA and Dick Murdoch in the ring alone. Murdoch began arguing with the referee that Dr. Death should be disqualified while, at the same time, motioning to the backstage area. His distraction allowed two men to slide into the ring and hit a huge double dropkick on Magnum TA. For too long Dixie has been overshadowed. Tonight the South rises again! (D+) ---------- w/ V. Magnum TA/Steve ‘Dr. Death’ Williams Magnum TA and Dr. Death came to the ring to join the Southern Sons – already inside the squared circle – by slapping hands at ringside. Death took immediate advantage of his overwhelming size advantage, grounding Koko with his amateur wrestling skills. A cheap shot from Koko turned the tide and he and Eaton were able to isolate Dr. Death in their corner, tagging in and out while the ever-present Dick Murdoch made sure that the referee’s attention was not with the participants in the match. Death was able to make the hot-tag to Magnum TA, who promptly cleared the ring, sending the Southern Sons outside to their mentor. The regrouped Southern Sons were aided by Murdoch, who hit Magnum TA with a cheap shot as TA jawed with Captain Redneck, allowing Bobby Eaton to climb the ropes and connect with the Alabama Jam for the pinfall and win. Inside the ring, the wily veteran was too much for the spunky tag team champ, as Murdoch constantly relied on underhanded tactics to keep control. Despite a late flurry of offense, Murdoch was able to finish off the match with his patented Texas Brainbuster, sending Tiger down roughly on his afro. Ted Dibiase and Jim Duggan This was an intense match, as Dibiase and Duggan, who defeated JYD in a handicap match two weeks ago, drew a very unfavorable response from the Louisiana crowd. The JYD, on the other hand, got a huge pop while his partner’s response was decidedly mixed. JYD, wearing his customary white long trunks and studded dog collar, slapped hands with fans on his way to the ring while Reed, dressed in a midriff yellow mesh shirt and short white trunks, preferred to stay focused on the task at hand, ignoring requests from fans. Inside the ring, there was a distinct clash in styles between Dibiase’s technical prowess and the brawling acumen of the other three competitors. It looked like Reed was going to pick up the win after connecting with the flying shoulderblock on Dibiase, but Duggan broke up the count and a brawl ensued. In the end, it was Duggan picking up the win after Reed inadvertently hit JYD with a clothesline, after Duggan ducked, making the Dog easy prey for a Spear while Dibiase and Reed brawled inside the ring. Reed tried to convince JYD that it was an accident, but the Dog wanted none of it, pushing away his partner and exiting to the back alone. (C-) Overall: C

Kamala w/‘General’ Skandar Akbar The Junkyard Dog came out first, acknowledging the praise of his legions of fans, slapping hands with many of them near ringside and signing autographs for a handful before his opponent made his entrance. Unlike the JYD, Kamala encountered a cold reception. The African Headhunter came down to the ring, led by his manager General Akbar – who had gone to the back to get his African consort – wearing his traditional African mask and carrying a vicious looking spear. Inside the ring, the two brawlers went toe-to-toe, each attempting to bodyslam the other, but both proving unsuccessful. JYD’s bodyslam try, in particular, failed and the JYD seemed to favor his back after the attempt. Kamala tried to capitalize, but failed, missing his trademark splash as the JYD rolled away. Then the Dog, taking advantage of his position on the mat, headbutted Kamala, sending the large man to the floor, escaping to the safety of Akbar. Back in the ring, JYD finally carried through on a bodyslam attempt, hitting the Thump out of nowhere for the win. After the match, Akbar attacked the exhausted JYD, allowing Kamala time to recover and hit a big splash on the Dog, causing his back even greater pain. Mr. Olympia Mr. Olympia came out first, wearing his trademark mask and shunning fans at ringside. His opponent, the charismatic Reed, emerged second, running to the ring wearing his now-trademark yellow mesh midriff top and matching headband. This match was a clash of styles, with Olympia keeping to the mat and Reed attempting to overwhelm his smaller opponent. In the end, Reed’s strength was too much for Olympia and the Hacksaw connected with his brutal flying shoulderblock off the ring ropes for the 1…2…3 setting up a semifinal match pitting Reed against the Junkyard Dog. Winner: ‘Hacksaw’ Butch Reed via Flying Shoulderblock(C) ---------- V. Like the Reed/Olympia match, this was a clash in styles with Duggan trying to brawl his way to victory, and Wrestling II relying on his superior technical prowess. This time, however, the technician proved victorious as Wrestling capitalized on a missed Duggan spear attempt, hitting his patented Million Dollar Kneelift on Hacksaw for the victory, awaiting the winner of the Dibiase/Dr. Death quarterfinal match. Ted Dibiase The young and energetic Dr. Death came to the ring first, wearing a maroon Oklahoma jersey and black shorts. Dibiase sauntered the ring, seemingly unconcerned about his excited opponent. Dr. Death’s greenness showed in this match as, despite his power advantage, Dibiase was able to control the pace of the fight. Dibiase picked up the win after hitting a low blow on Dr. Death when the referee’s back was turned, allowing him to lock in the Cobra Clutch on his prone opponent for the submission victory. Winner: Ted Dibiase via Cobra Clutch(B) ---------- V. Tournament Semifinal: Junkyard Dog v. ‘Hacksaw’ Butch Reed Reed came out first to a mixed reaction, fans still unsure about his potential alliance with Akbar. He still managed to exude energy, despite his draining match against Mr. Olympia earlier in the evening. Junkyard Dog came out next, wearing his trademark dog collar and chain, slapping hands with fans around the ring but obviously favoring his back. Inside the ring, the two men stared one another down. Reed looked like he was going to say something to JYD, but the Dog raised his hand to cut him off. Instead, the two men locked up, pushing one another to successive corners in attempts to showcase their power. Reed finally prevailed, pushing down JYD. But the Dog was not to be outdone and locked up again, this time sending Reed to the canvas. The match went this way for several minutes, with neither side gaining a significant advantage. In fact, it looked like Reed would prevail after hitting the flying shoulderblock on JYD, but the Dog’s foot was too close to the ropes, and he was able to break up the pinfall attempt at 2 by placing one foot on the bottom rope. JYD rebounded after a second Reed shoulderblock attempt failed, lifting Hacksaw into position for, and connecting with, the Thump Powerslam for the win. After the match, Reed look disconsolate, slamming his hands on the mat in frustration before sulking to the back, questions still unanswered about his relationship with Akbar. Tournament Semifinal: Mr. Wrestling II v. Ted Dibiase This was a technical masterpiece. Dibiase matched the more experienced Wrestling II move-for-move as the two grappled on the mat for the better part of this contest. Dibiase went up top for a fist drop to turn the tide of the match, but Wrestling II rolled away. Wrestling II responded with an attempted kneelift, but Dibiase avoided the contact. Dibiase then hit his fist drop, clearly expecting that would end the match, but Wrestling II miraculously kicked out at 2. Dibiase jawed with the referee, allowing Wrestling II the opportunity to roll him up, scoring a near fall. Dibiase tried to end the contest by using the same tactic that enabled him to defeat Dr. Death – a lowblow. But Wrestling II blocked the move and turned it into a flashy rolling armbar. In the end, however, Dibiase was too much, taking advantage of an errant dropkick from Wrestling II to lock in the Cobra Clutch to pick up another submission victory. Ted Dibiase Bill Watts came out before this match to announce it as a North American championship match, sanctioned by Mid-South Wrestling to decide the undisputed North American Champion. Dibiase came out first, drawing derision from the crowd. Junkyard Dog’s reaction, contrarily, was enthusiastic and positive, nearly blowing the roof off the cozy arena. The two men began by circling one another, both refusing to make an early mistake against their opponent. Dibiase struck first, locking up and then quickly sweeping JYD’s leg for an early takedown. Dibiase worked over JYD’s back – injured earlier at the hands of Kamala – applying various submission holds to cause the Dog pain. JYD tried to mount a comeback, but Dibiase thwarted it with a well-placed forearm to the kidneys, sending the Dog sprawling to the mat. It looked like Dibiase would prevail after he locked in the dreaded Cobra Clutch, but the JYD made it to the ropes, forcing a hold break. JYD countered a hammerlock with one of his own, wearing out Dibiase for a change in this match. In this lull in action, Skandar Akbar decided to make his presence known, coming down toward the ring and signaling to the backstage area. ‘Hacksaw’ Butch Reed emerged and made his way down to ring, distracting JYD. Akbar pointed toward JYD, clearly ordering Reed to attack. Reed jumped on the ring apron and was warned by referee Alfred Neeley to back off. Reed looked like he was going to pounce on JYD, but instead turned and delivered a flying shoulderblock from the ring apron onto Akbar. The crowd roared its approval and JYD seemed energized by the turn of events. Dibiase, after hitting 3 successful clotheslines, missed one and collided with the turnbuckle. He turned around right into the Junkyard Dog’s waiting arms and the Dog connected with a brutal Thump Powerslam, gaining both the victory and the North American Championship belt as Butch Reed stood at ringside, looking on. Matt Borne Borne came out first, wearing nondescript black trunks and a disconcerting grin. Reed entered second, with a more positive reception than he’d been getting lately, sporting his yellow mesh shirt and match headband. The match itself wasn’t all that engaging, with Borne playing the maniacal sociopath and Reed, for the most part, avoiding locking up with Borne, preferring instead to launch him across the ring to demonstrate his formidable strength. Reed secured the win with the running shoulderblock after Borne missed a wild lariat attempt that would have decapitated the Hacksaw.
