Upgrading my PC - advice wanted

I've had my pc for around 6 years and I've needed to upgrade it. I have no idea what to do or what to buy. Games are starting to struggle on my pc. Even Football Manager triggers virtual memory issues, so I'm assuming I'll need to upgrade the memory. My graphics card is a Radeon 9000, so what would be the best to upgrade that to. I don't usually play graphic intensive games (I leave that to my console) on pc prefering to stick with text based games like TEW or FM, but one game series I am addicted to is Total War and I just brought Medieval II and it turns out my graphics card is not up to the job. Plus I want to be able to play the new Total War Empires when it comes out. So what would you reccomend? My sound card is a SigmaTel C-Major. It came as standard with my pc and still does it's job, but should I consider upgrading this as well?

Although having a lot of RAM seems ideal to most people you still have to have a decent processor to back it up. These days you are actually cheaper buying a new PC than upgrading an old system. My current specs are: 9.6ghz Quadcore processor 4gb of RAM 1gb Nvidia Geforce 8500GT graphics card 500g Hard drive. The whole system cost me less than £500, you just have to shop around. And remember people if you are going to run with more than 2gb RAM you will need a 64bit operating system to utilise it.
I was considering buying a new pc, but a few things I'd like to know? 1. Will I have to have Windows Vista? 2. With Vista will my games marked XP work? or will only games marked Vista work?
1. You would find it very hard to find a PC these days that doesnt come with Vista. I have installed XP on my computer as well and run a dual boot with both Vista & XP. 2. All of your XP games should run. There are some issues with some games not running properly although its easy to find patches for them. I have 30+ PC games and all of them run fine on Vista.
