Saving Private Ryan

Good movie. I don't know if I'd say it was the best war movie ever... Three Kings was better. Best war movie ever, in my opinion, is a russian movie called Come and See. Shocking and thought provoking. Letters from Iwo Jima was also a great film... watch it after Flags of the Fathers as they are the same story from different sides. Downfall is another great one... a German fiolm about Hitler's last days hidden in a bunker while Berlin crumbles around him. After watching them Saving Private Ryan, while a good film, is simply an action film in comparrison. If you like Private Ryan I recommend Band of Brothers. A TV series made by Tom Hanks.

Get the "Band of Brothers" series. It's a bit less "patriotic" and a bit more realistic. I liked the movie, just not the part about Ryan who says "these are my brothers now"....that ruined it for me. Everything before that is okay though.

If you think it's cheesy... it is true. I'm not enlisted yet due to not being at home(I leave for bootcamp either late May, or June most likely though) and I feel that the Marines I talk to every day are my family already. The bonds forged by battle, and the obstacles you have to overcome in Boot Camp/training are stronger than most things families have had to go through. *edit: Flags of our Fathers... I haven't seen this movie yet, but I have read the book. The Navy Corpsman that was with them that assisted in the flag raising went to the same high school as myself, and I have read the book/done plenty of research about Doc Bradley. I also work in the summer with a man that was in Mogadishu as part of the mission "Black Hawk Down" chronicled. When it came out, he could not watch it, and when he finally rented it he had to send his family to his mother's house due to the emotions that it would bring back. Wars do bad things to good men sometimes. Oh yeah, get Band of Brothers.*

I'm not a huge war-movie guy (more of your typical one-man-against-thousands-of-vampires... from space action lover) but Band of Brothers is ace. Damn fine programming. Does the forum censor the word ****? Seems weird.

Which is what I like about Band of Brothers and what nags me about Shooting Captain Miller (I mean, saving private ryan). I've got 2 friends, both being paratroopers and having been in Somalia, who could tell you realistic (and frightening) stories. And there's no idealism involved there....just plain survival. But don't take this post "negative"...
