Remianen
Here's something that's seriously vexing me. My workers aren't learning the languages I want them to with any semblance of speed. That is, while my English speakers pick up Japanese in a couple months, my Japanese speakers don't pick up English seemingly at all! I have two dev promotions based in Japan (WINNOW and 5SSW). Their rosters are almost equally English and Japanese speaking. However, while English speakers who have had no exposure to Japanese (like Mary Beth Chase) become fluent in 2 months, my Japanese speakers who have had prior exposure to English (like DEVIL Karube), STILL haven't picked up the language six months into the game! I don't want to call it a bug since it might be a locale issue (that is, being in Japan is helping the gaijins learn the language faster) but I'm also seeing on my own roster (Mid South US based), Japanese workers who have worked every show I've run in six months (4 TV shows a month plus a PPV and one untelevised show per month to build pop in areas in Canada), like Fuyuko Higa, are still only at 'basic' level. I shouldn't say this is only for Japanese though since Cuervo and Jennifer Heat and Magdalena and Gabriela Ortega fit the description as well and they're Spanish speakers. This is only causing a problem because I need these workers to be able to speak the local language or else the angles they're in take a hit ("Soandso had major problems due to the language barrier"). So I can't call up anyone until they can speak English (even if they're going to have a manager) and I'm DYING to call up DEVIL! DEVIL Karube vs Lauren Easter has MONEY plastered all over it, y'see. Could it be a personality trait that leads to faster language learning?
TheJoshRollins
I don't know the answer, but ya know, English is one of the hardest languages in the world.
D-Lyrium
I thought you only learned the language if you lived/worked in that country? I thought that'd always been the case? Think about it, why would DEVIL Karube need to learn English if she works in Japan? If a Japanese guy came to work in your business, would you expect your employees to all learn Japanese just to communicate with him, or would you expect him to learn English? :p

The foreign workers on my main roster (Mid South, US) haven't picked up much of anything in six months. That's with working on every show for most of them. Sensational Ogiwara, Thunder Hike, Fuyuko Higa, Gemmei Oonishi, Gabriela Ortega, Magdalena, Cuervo, Eri Sato, Sae Akutagawa, Kit Hatoyama, and on and on and on. They live and work in the US of A and still haven't picked up the local language. Also, why would a worker have to live and/or work in an area to learn a language when they're surrounded by people who speak that language regularly? I learned Spanish due to being surrounded by Puerto Ricans and Dominicans (and Mexicans when I lived in Houston and the Bay Area). I learned Serbo-Croatian (at least the curse words :p) due to spending a lot of time at a friend's house whose grandmother spoke that regularly. And I'm stupid when it comes to languages! It's immersion, according to Berlitz, Rosetta Stone, and Pimsleur. :p
D-Lyrium
The first part is possibly a bug. Or, like TJR said, maybe TEW implements a secret 'language difficulty' setting, whereby English would be really hard to improve above Passable. Because it makes no sense at all unless you already speak it ¬_¬ As for the second point... you answered your own question. When YOU lived around Puerto Ricans, you learned a bit of Spanish. The Japanese girls aren't "living around" English-speakers. They're working with them, in Japan, where everyone will be speaking Japanese.

And therefore workers can only learn languages 16.6% as quickly as they normally could.

The Japanese girls are living and working with them, in the US, where everyone is speaking ENGLISH (or at the very least, Engrish or Spanglish). My problem isn't the Japanese girls not picking up on English while working for 5SSW and WINNOW. My problem is the Japanese (and Mexican) girls not picking up English while working for QAW in the Mid South of the US. Yeah, it'd be nice if DEVIL would pick up on English but it's not that big a deal. I'm more concerned with Fuyuko Higa muckin' up every angle she's in with her partner, Lauren Easter, because she won't learn English.

James Casey
Do Basic skills really affect things that much? I never noticed it using Huntress Makiko in 07 (great talker, but again, she took a long time to get that far with English) . It never seemed to affect her in angles, although I didn't user her very much...
