Ultimate Welcome to the Coastal Zone

Where It All Begins Again. Welcome to the Coastal Zone! For those who don't get the reference: Marvel Comics, about seven years ago or so, started a line of comics called their Ultimate line... Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, etc. It was restarting the characters from the begining, updated for the modern age, with a good many things different but the core ideas being the same. Given that the Cornellverse has been updated... hey, why not? The only rule is that we're going to stay as a Hybrid fed unless we have a really good reason for it (IE, my booking style can't adjust, or it just gets plain-old boring, which I suspect will b the case). That being said... Welcome to the Coastal Zone! A late-night game of poker. Lots of alcohol consumed. In the final hand of the night, all the players had dropped out but two. Cliff Anderson, owner of Coastal Zone Combat Wrestling, held the ten and jack of spades. William Peers, a down-on-his-luck wrestling fan, held a pair of Queens. Showing was the Nine and King of Spades, the Nine of Hearts, and the Three of Clubs. The two men looked at each other and their piles of chips, nearly depleted. "I'm nearly out... I'll add CZCW to the pot, even tho it's not balanced now." "Well, we'll balance it out then. My services for a year, for no pay, if you win." The final card is flipped... and William pumps his fist in the air. "Three queens! I believe I own a wrestling company." "Actually, Billy... that's the Queen of Spades, so that gives me... a straight flush." "Bullsh-" "You work for me now, boy. Watch your langauge. And I'll see you in the morning... hangover or no." Week 1, December 2005. Monday It wasn't -so- bad. Sure, he wasn't getting paid... but Cliff had given Peers permission to make whatever changes he liked, as long as it was booking-related. With that in mind, he took a look at his roster. Peers' first act was to request Cliff and Fox Mask become the core of a booking committee to bounce ideas off of. If anyone else worked into the main event spot, they would be added as well. Thinking about it, he added Farrah and Pee-Wee, as they would be spending more time backstage and in-ring, respectively. All three 'staff members' were also asked to act as road agents. The next part was tricky... discussing the roster with his booking team, and with the roster themselves. Oddly enough, several people wanted to be in the main event... and Fox Mask said he shouldn't be there. We needed two more main eventers, one more midcarder, one dedicated road agent, and a color commentator... while we had one too many upper-midcarders, three two many lower midcarders, and one too many openers. Moves would have to be made. When all was said and done, we had a roster. Slightly bigger than it needed to be, and missing a dedicated road agent, but a roster nonetheless. ------------------ COASTAL ZONE DOWNLOAD: Roster Staff Cliff Anderson -- The owner, also served as the announcer for the matches. Farrah Hesketh -- Color Commentator. Quite a looker. Works as a ref for AAA. Pee-Wee Germain -- Ref, and not a bad one at that. Main Event [F]Fox Mask -- All-Around flyer and long-time CZCW vet. [H]"The Nightmares", Insane Machine and Primal Rage -- One's a flashy wrestler long ignored by the mainstream wrestling world, the other's a goth brawler you don't want to get in the way of. Upper Midcard [F]"The Fly Boys", Donnie J and Jimmy P -- Formerly of TCW's Cruiserweight division until it was killed off. Donnie was the more talented of the two, being more entertaining and a better performer; Jimmy is a decent performer, but didn't have a lot else going for him. [F]Frankie Perez -- He can't sell worth a damn, but he's not the type who expects to take many hits. [H]Jeremiah Moose -- Flashy youngster, worried about becoming just like Insane Machine: Old and going nowhere fast. Midcard [H]"The Gilbert Brothers", Jesse and Joe Gilbert -- Hockey-themed team who work as high-fliers mainly because they're not very good at anything else. [F]E.M.M. Moe -- The entertaining joker. Lower Midcard [H]Flying Jimmy Foxx -- An entertaining flyer with some good momentum built up. [H]Plague -- AKA Black Eagle. Arguably one of the most entertaining men on the roster. [F]Snap Dragon -- Long-time vet. Nothing special, but he knows more about the business than most rookies realize even exists. [F]Valiant -- Decent technical wrestler with the perfect looks for a babyface. Opener [H]Prince Adam -- Huge guy with the right looks to become a superstar someday. [F]Remmy Skye -- "Psyche Out". Amazingly flashy, charismatic, and can bounce back from any injury. The only man more likely to be a superstar in the future than Prince Adam. ------------------------------- Next, Peers took a look at the titles, and shook his head. Snap Dragon held the Coastal Zone Championship, the Gilberts had the tag team titles, and Plague helpd the Coastal zone Xtreme high-flying title. up until the Gilberts were promoted, all titles had been held by lower-midcarders. That would have to be changed. And it would need to be changed... tomorrow. Peers decided that having four shows a year wasn't good enough... and gave 24 hours notice that they'd be performing the next night. After it was pointed out that SWF does a show on Tuesdays, Peers deicded to book the show for Thursday instead. Week 1, December 2005. Tuesday. BHOTWG released three workers: Hitomi, Umeki, and Silver Shark. Didn't mean a whole lot to us right now. Alex DeColt won the CGC World Title, didn't mean much to us, either. But what did matter was that Cliff came to Peers and gave him three demands that he would have to meet. First, the Coastal Zone must not fall in size over the next year. Second, it must grow in size in the next two years. And thirdly, one year from today, there must be more money in the Zone bank account than there is right now... $25,000. Peers accepted the demands... it's not like he had a choice. Over the next few days, Peers sat back and watched a few shows, wondering what he'd do with 'his' new roster. He only had an hour to work with, what to do, what to do. Easy answer: Work the cheap workers. this meant the Gilberts and Primal Rage would be there... it also meant that Farrah, as color commentator, would be making more money than Cliff. That wouldn't do. She was removed from the Color position. Working off of costs, Peers put together something that passed for a card... and waited. First-ever Thursday Night Welcome to the Coastal Zone Venue: Southwest (Tiny) -- 233 paid tickets Opening Match: Primal Rage def. Prince Adam by countout, 14:49 (E). Adam was visibly tiring near the end, but we were hoping that would make the countout work better. Midcard Match: Gilbert Brothers(c) def. Valiant and Remmy Skye by Slapshot, 19:55 (C-). Both Gilberts were getting tired by the end, we may have to stick them in shorter matches. Main Event Ladder Match: Fox Mask def. Plague(c) via Title Retrieval, 15:47 (C-). Final Rating: C- All in all, the show was considered a success, but the booking team wasn't sure about using Remmy Skye for such a long match when he's supposed to be an opener. The real question, in Peers' mind, was if they made any money on the show. The answer was a resounding 'NO', having lost over three thousand dollars. Elsewhere, Chris Caufield won the DAVE Unified Title, and SWF signed seven new workers, including T-Rex, Vin Tanner, Corporal Doom, and Danny B Bling. Hopefully, the Coastal Zone would be under their radar long enough to begin making money on shows... and hopefully, that would be soon.

Week 1, December 2005, Sunday Let the politics begin. Peers got word that four of the employees weren't happy with their pushes... Snap Dragon, Remmy Skye, Plague, and Prince Adam. Well... pretty much everyone on the low end of the card. Swearing softly, Peers let his booking team rearrange pushes how they saw fit. Main Eventers: Face -- "The Fly Boys" Main Eventers: Heel -- Plague Upper Midcard: Face -- Frankie Perez, Remmy Skye, Fox Mask Upper Midcard: Heel -- Snap Dragon, Insane Machine Midcard: Face: -- None Midcard: Heel: Jeremiah Moose, Flying Jimmy Foxx, Prince Adam Lower Midcard: Face -- E.M.M. Moe, Valiant Lower Midcard: Heel -- Primal Rage Opener: Face -- None Opener: Heel -- "The Gilbert Brothers" Well, that's one heck of a re-arrangement. Our other main problem right now was having five people with A/A+ momentum, and only four in the D or lower range. With another show coming up on Thursday, we'd have to see what we could do about that. Our other other main problem was that our face main eventers were very, very expensive. That pretty much meant Plague was going to main event the shows, most likely against Fox Mask. We could handle that. But w had to get the tag titles off the Gilberts ASAP... but our only face tag team was, as I said, expensive. And we sill had our championship on Snap Dragon. Attempts to negotiate with Curt O'Malley to come in a a road agent reached an impass when he simply wanted way too much money. Cliff would continue in that role for now. SWF signed more people away, including Joey Minnesota and Captain USA, and then had Skull DeBones defeat Runaway Train for the title. Thursday comes around again... Welcome to the Coastal Zone Venue: Southwest (Tiny) -- 193 paid tickets Opening (very expensive ladder) match: Fly Boys def. Gilbert Brothers(c) by Title Retrieval, 14:35 (C-). Midcard (Championship) match: Frankie Perez def. Snap Dragon(c) by P-Clutch, 17:45 (C-). Main Event (Xtreme) match: Plague def. Fox Mask(c) by rollup with tights, 17:36 (C-). Final Rating: C- That was going to be expensive... but it wasn't a bad show, really. We had now lost almost nine thousand dollars in two short weeks... but now, maybe, we could try to stop hemmoraging money... it might be worth it bringing in a couple no-names as openers... and lo, it was done, as two new names were brought into the Coastal Zone. American Elemental -- Young, brilliant high flier. Slotted into a Midcard Face role. Kashmir Singh -- Powerful-for-his-size Indian wrestler. Given an Opener Face position. Works very cheap. And once more, Thursday came around... Welcome to the Coastal Zone Venue: Southwest (Tiny) -- 463 paid tickets Opening Match: Primal Rage def. Kashmir Singh by unseen low blow, 14:55 (E). The two just didn't seem to click. Midcard Championship Match: Frankie Perez(c) def Flying Jimmy Fox by P-Clutch, 18:05 (D). The two just didn't click, and the match had a lack of flow in the middle. Main Event Xtreme Match: American Elemental def. Plague(c) by countout at 20:33 (C). Plague decided to leave to avoid the risk of losing his title to someone on their debut, and it seems his character could use soem freshening up. Final Rating: C- Hey, we did better, given the number of tickets sold (We promoted it as a medium event instead of a small... still expensive, tho). We lost under three thousand on the show. Is we can get down to losing just, say, two thousand a show... Let's give it a shot! Welcome to the Coastal Zone Venue: Southwest (Tiny) -- 442 paid tickets Opening Match: Jesse Gilbert def. Kashmir Singh by Joe interference, 14:51 (D). Midcard Match: Valiant def. Joe Gilbert by Kashmir Interference, 11:53 (C-). Good chemistry between these two. Main Event Xtreme Triangle Ladder Match: Plague(c) def. Fox Mask, American Elemental by title retrieval, 23:50 (C-). Overall Rating: C- Well, still a lot of tickets bought... and still a loss of under three thousand dollars, but not quite down to two yet. For four shows, we're averaging two grand a show in show costs... and $3,200 a show in worker costs? That can't be right... someone must have a huge downside on their contract... But no, nobody did. Elemental and Kashmir had very small ones, so they might as well be used... the rest didn't, so we'd just see what we could do to keep costs down. Plague/Elemental looked like the way to go for a while. Peers was fairly confident he could pull that off. But wrestling in general was in trouble. DAVE and CGC had both lost their TV time slots. The only place interest in wrestling was rising was Mexico. The economy was failing all over the place. Maybe... maybe there was no place for the Coastal Zone after all? (Note: Welcome to the Coastal Zone will not be on hiatus until I can find enough money to buy the game. Most likely, the second week of October. Maybe third.)

I'm pissed! Why did you make Fox Mask lose the belt so fast?! He might be on the booking team but nobody gives him any respect and listen to his ideas! Just kidding. Happy to see it back for the 2005 version! Go cutting edge style baby, give us some angles!

Awesome, i was planning on starting with CZCW too and as i'm a noob into wrestling games this could help me a lot. Btw, where can i read your old CZCW dynasty that everybody talks about?

That's one of them... the second one, actually. The first one goes from 2004 to 2009, aka "The non-televised era". Basicly, taking CZCW from where they started in the first EW and taking them up to the level of the Big Three (and replacing DAVE in that list). That can be found at: http://www.400softwarestudios.com/invboard/upload/index.php?showtopic=60707 The second, and shorter, one which Greg helpfully linked, is 2009 to early 2010, the televised era.The reason for the split is that I got burned out and had to do a fresh start to get back into things. This'll be interesting, as Hybrid doesn't letyou get away with a lot of the storyline stuff, so we'll see...at least I've got time to think about it, as it'll be at least a week before I can afford the game...

Welcome to the Real World is finally over... so as a treat, I bought TEW2k5. Which means I need to say something else... Welcome to the Coastal Zone! 2006 -- January -- Week 1 The wrestling industry was, to put it mildly, becoming a has-been fad. DAVE and CGC (or was it GCG... Peers, an American, couldn't tell them apart) had both lost their TV time slots. Buisness was bad all over. But still, Peers took it personally that he'd blown through half the Zone's funding already. As part of an attempt to cut costs, the weekly Welcome to the Coastal Zone shows were cut down ot half an hour long, instead of a full hour. And negotiations were requested with several of the Zone's highest-paid talent, looking to talk them down to a more reasonable level. In the Wednesday Night Wars, TCW was beating SWF by a slight margin (B+ to B-), while everyone else in the USA was an also-ran. As part of the effort to reduce costs, Peers looked up some new talent. First up was rookie Canadian Frankie Dee, a guy with good technical skills but not much else. But he was young and eager to learn. Second was Mikey James, a solidly-build high-flier who could also hold his own in the martial arts. Negotiations with the 'expensive contingent' failed to lower their contracts, so these two were brought in as a contingency plan in case others had to be let go. Welcome to the Coastal Zone Southwest (Tiny) - 418 paid tickets Opening Match: Prince Adam def. Kashmir Singh, 10:22, pinfall (E). Well, that was certainly a mistake. Frankie Perez came out to state that he'd heard Snap Dragon was talking about how he should've never lost the title... so Frankie offered him a rematch for the title (D). Crowd didn't like it. We need a new kind of crowd. Main Event Championship Match: Frankie Perez(c) def. Snap Dragon, 13:52, P-Clutch (C-). Not much to say about this one, beyond, well, that's what we were expecting. Final Rating: C- Another two thousand dollars down the drain. Peers sighed quietly and went to Cliff, asking for the promotion to be changed to a more Cutting-Edge style. Cliff, naturally, refused. Peers was going to need to find a way to make things work with what he had. 2006 -- January -- Week 2 Frankie Dee was put into an oener push, and Mikey was given an Upper Midcard push. Frankie would be a good jobber-fodder for the faces (our only other ption for heel openers were the Gilberts), and Mikey might be a good matchup with Perez at some point in the future. GCG (Or CGC... the one that didn't lose it's slot earlier) lost their TV slot as well. Farrah became one of the most popular women in the buisness, signing on with NYCW in addition to her duties with AAA, CGC, and CZCW. Welcome to the Coastal Zone Southwest (Tiny) -- 449 Paid Tickets Opening Match: Mikey James def Valiant, 8:15, pinfall w/ropes for leverage (D). James pretty much dominates as much as you can without burying the other guy. Main Event Ladder Xtreme Title Match: Plague(c) def. Remmy Skye, 14:59, retrival (C-). That's about it. Maybe it was time to accept we didn't have the right people for a good ladder match right now. Final Rating: D. The crowd was upset there were only two segments. Well, they didn't like the challenge angle we did last week... Modern fans -suck-! It turns out that part o fthe reason for the so-so main event may have been Remmy Skye. The two men had been instructed to script out their match ahead of time, but Skye showed up very late to the show, almost missing his cue to go to the ring. Remmy was given a warning. Still, another two thousand dollars had been lost... at this rate, the Zone had until the end of the month. 2006 -- January -- Week 3 Okay, so... cheapest show we can do with three matches? Peers smiled and called up four workers, letting them know they'd be pulling double-duty this Thursday. Still, it was becoming clear that without a good road agent, things were going very poorly. This week, SWF got the B+, TCW got the B- in the Wednesday Night War. Oh, how Peers longed for the day he could compete with them... Welcome to the Coastal Zone Southwest (Tiny) -- 461 paid tickets Opening Match: Jesse Gilbert def. Kashmir Singh, 7:33, pinfall after hockey stick shot (C-). Did what we wanted it to do. Midcard match: Valiant def. Joe Gilbert, 7:47, countout due to Joe walking out after getting beaten severely (C-). Apparently, these two have great chemistry together. Main Event Tag: Gilbert Brothers def. Valiant and Kashmir Singh, 7:49, Slap Shot (C-). Like you didn't see that coming? Final Rating: C- Hey, for $400 in worker paychecks, not counting the ref, that's not a bad show... even if the stupid 'modern' fans felt Kashmir and the Gilberts were overused. We may have to use this show again to try to make money... and for some reason, Remmy Skye showed up late to the show, even though he wasn't asked to be there. Torn between punishing him for being late or praising him for showing up at all, Peers decided to do nothing. We lost another two grand. Peers tries to convince Cliff that they didn't need a production department, but he wouldn't listen. Sighing, Peers gave in and accepted the fact that the Coastal Zone was a sinking ship. If the cheapest possible show still lost money, then there was no hope at all. On the next Coastal Zone: Will the dynasty end before it has a chance to really get going?

I completely agree that Modern fans suck and have to say that Hybrid is so damn annoying and loses money constantly... I'm into mid-Feb and Im $65,000 in the red with CZCW, I hope you can last longer than I have.... Side Note: Loved Welcome to the Real World, thank you for finishing it :p Good Luck, as you'll definately need it... |Anderz|

I noticed you always use tiny arena ... thats the one at 1000 people... why not use tiniest at 300 people... cost less and you would be guaranteed full house every show... after all I'm guessing that if you lose $2000 yet only $400 in worker cost, then the arena rental must be the thing thats killing you there.

Where we don't have a 'Tiniest' arena to choose from: Welcome to the Coastal Zone! 2006 -- January -- Week 4 Peers, after a fit of financial insight, decided not to hold a fourth show this month. His plan was to compare this month's numbers against last month's, because he suddenly had a hunch. TCW hit the B+ this week, SWF hit a B. SWF, however, wa pulling in 50% more viewers than TCW... and TCW was on three networks. Is was also a busy week, as Peers had to re-negotiation Flyin' Jimmy Foxx's contract. As he wasn't that expensive to begin with, he wasn't expecting a huge increase in demand Jimmy's demands. He didn't want any increase, relaly, beyond adding in a small downside... but for some reason, Peers was unable to give him the $350 a month he wanted... either $300 or $400. What kind of strange payroll department was Cliff using? Given that Jimmy wasn't really doing anything at the moment, and fliers were currently a dime a dozen, Peers decided to let the man's contract expire quietly. 2006 -- February -- Week 1 Peers' hunch may have paid off. With a slight increase in merchandising sales, and a slight decrease in sponsorship fees, the Zone had regained two thousand dollars. Staying conservative, they could manage two more months of three cheap-arse shows before going broke... and hopefully, those six shows would give them enough of a boost to raise ticket sales in this timeof bad economy and falling industry. Welcome to the Coastal Zone Southwest (Tiny) -- 381 Paid Tickets Opening Match: Valiant def. Jesse Gilbert, 8:55, DQ-Hockey Stick (C-). Both men seem to be improving in their work. Midcard Match: Remmy Skye def. Joe Gilbert, 8:49, DQ-Interference-Jesse Gilbert-Slap Shot (C-). As expected. Random One-Minute Of Mic Time: Remmy and Valiant challenge the Gilberts to a fair fight (E). Oh, c'mon, it's only one minute to tell you why they're still here... Main Event Tag: Gilbert Brothers def. Valiant and Remmy Skye, 5:01, handful of Skye's tights (C-). What we expected here, as well. Final Rating: C-. The Gilberts were in the midst of a push up to Lower Midcarders, so looking at a price-to-effectiveness ratio, we figures this was best all around... and would punish Remmy for being late last week. He was off his game tonight, apparently, and Jesse's character needed freshening up. Both Gilberts and Valiant were slowly improving their skills and could be worth keeping around. Still, we lost two grand on the show, and ticket sales were down. 2006 -- February -- Week 2 Sadly, Peers' attempt to get the Zone a TV show had failed, being rejected by all the networks he had talked to. Among new shows starting this season, SWF Lightning, TCW - The TV Show, and DAVE - the TV Show. Apparently, TCW and DAVE have the same creative teams. Peers, seeing as how he figured he'd never have the ticket sales to justify using them again, stripped the tag team titles and began the end of the The Fly Boys' contracts. And guess who's getting the titles back? Well... we'd bill the next show as a pair of singles matches, winners get to take partners into the tag-title main event... Welcome to the Coastal Zone Southwest (Tiny) -- 469 paid tickets Opening Match: Joe Gilbert def. Kashmir Singh, 5:47, Interference-Jesse Gilbert-Slap Shot (C-) Midcard Match: Valiant def. Primal Rage, 7:18, (D) Main Event Tag Title Ladder Match: Gilbert Brothers def. Valiant and American Elemental, 7:46, Title Retrival (C-) Final Rating: C- Joe and Kashmir continued to show good chemistry together. Valiant and Rage didn't click and both seemed to need freshening up, and Valiant seemed to be improving more and more. Ticket sales were up... way up... and we lost under two grand on the show. Things were definately improving... but how fast? 2006 -- February -- Week 3 Our new plan was to make the Tag Titles the focus of our shows. Plague and Perez both cost $500 apiece... the Gilberts were good for two hundred, together. The goal of the next show was twofold. First, we'd try to see if we can tell a story in the confines of a hybrid fed. This would involve a one-minute angle that would, most likely, get crapped on. We woul dalso do our first turn... which if it fails, well, he won't be around more often. Welcome to the Coastal Zone Southwest (Tiny) -- 456 paid tickets Opening Match: Kashmir Singh def. Flyin' Jimmy Foxx, 7:37, Surprise Indian Deathlock (C-). Foxx dominates most of the match, and Kashmir suddenly gets in a submission hold, and the jobber wins a match. Angle: Foxx is angry... but decides he lost to a better man and shakes Kashmir's hand. The two then decide to challenge the Gilberts tonight (F) Crapped on, as expected. Foxx turns face, to better fit the main event. Main Event Tag Team Ladder Match: Gilbert Brothers def. Kashmir Singh and Flyin' Jimmy Foxx, 13:31, Title Belt Retrieval (C-). Final Rating: C- Joe is needing freshening up too... maybe it's time to give the Gilberts something non-hockey-related to do? Still, we had apparently used Kashmir far too much... it was time to bump him ot the lower midcard. We only needed one opener, anyway. Besides, we were taking a week off now to keep from losing too much money... maybe two shows a month would do better? We'd have to consider it... 2006 -- February -- Week 4 The Gilberts were given a new gimmick, that of brothers who were hockey fans only because they gambled on the games... and were now branching out into gambling in other ways. Other than that... slow week. Jimmy Foxx left after his little turn and title shot, so hopefully he wouldn't hate us for not giving him more money. We also decided to announce Championship and Xtreme title matches for Bash on the Beach the first week of July: Plague defending against American Elemental, and Perez defending against Bates. Now if we can find a way to get people interested in them... March may be known as Interference Month!
