crayon
Just wondering.. when in doubt, do you think it'd be fair to stick anyone who's wrestled in any country for more than a year with at least "basic" skills for that language? Also, given that English is a mandatory part of the pre-university schooling system in Japan, would it be fair to stick the majority of modern Japanese workers with "Basic" if not "passable" english skills? bobinc
Just because you pass a course doesn't mean you know it. I passed history but once done I moved on to the present. :p I say when in doubt give them the language of their home place.

shamelessposer
Lance Storm said that he knows "enough French to get slapped in a bar." I'd consider that basic. If a worker has actually been working in the country for a year on a pretty regular basis then a basic understanding can probably be assumed unless you've heard contrary stories about a particular wrestler. Passable would be the ability to carry on a conversation backstage without consulting a dictionary or deliver a promo with a little bit of prep time. Actually living in a country for a year would probably get someone up to this status. And being fluent in a language would mean being able to speak as well as a native. People who take college courses in a language sometimes speak it better than natives, because they've had recent textbook learning about things like grammar, spelling, and punctuation that would maybe go unnoticed by someone who uses it every day. shamelessposer
Well I guess what else I'm wondering is what does the game consider "basic" grasp of a language? "yes", "hello", "no jobbing please"? Like just enough to get from one end of the locker-room to the other?
Basic knowledge is probably the sort of phrase memorization that gets you a C in a high school or community college course. "Where is the bathroom?" "What is my room number?" "I'd like to order this dish, please." "I am an American wrestler. How much for your wife?" "Please stop hitting me with that baseball bat." "We are out of badgers. Would you like a wolverine instead?"

djthefunkchris
I always took it to mean something like.. Basic: Know how to say Water, house, hungry... can get your point accross, but cannot carry on a real conversation. Passable: Tarzan Level. "Tarzan Hungry" "Tarzan needs bathroom" "Tarzan has car" "Tarzan can help you" Fluent: Can carry on intelligent conversations, and keep up with normal speach.
