The Long, Rock Hard Road To Glory

Recommended Posts

The Rainbow Bar and Grill was dead. We hadn’t seen a customer in three hours. As Head Chef it was in my best interests to help The Boss put bums in seats and hands in pockets. We had failed for months with Karaoke and Disco nights - we had a fancy dress Halloween night three months ago but only the staff bothered to turn up. It seemed to me that Rainbow Bar and Grill was a sinking ship. I had my loyalty to The Boss. He gave me my break, hiring me as a kitchen assistant as soon as I left school. We occasionally went to see the old guys wrestling at USPW - just last October we witnessed a great match where James Justice took the title from Bruce The Giant. We were close friends and we shared much of the same interests. So, it was a surprise that it took us so long to come up with the latest no-brainer idea to attract customers to the Rainbow. “Boss,” I said one morning as I was prepping food. “I was thinking about our current situation last night while sitting on the toilet - that’s where I get all my best ideas; in my quiet place - when it hit me.” “What, you banged your head? Don’t tell me, you had a vision and when you came to you drew what you saw. Lo and behold you just invented the Flux Capacitor. Where we’re going, we don’t need… customers!” “Wrestling,” I said, seriously. The Boss burst out laughing. “I don’t think anybody is gonna pay to see me and you wrestling.” “I don’t mean us. I mean, we start up our own promotion. I know a few guys from the local scene. They should have their own contacts. I did some training at the USPW Training Camp a few years back, I could get between the ropes.” “I didn’t know you could wrestle.” “Well, I trained, but the school closed down. I still practice in my basement, though.” The Boss rubbed his chin as he thought things through. “What would it cost me?” “You’re the business man. I just have the ideas.” “Okay, Jack. All we have left is $2,500. I’ll invest it into your dream. If it fails then that’s the end of Rainbow Bar and Grill.” “Boss, I don’t want your life savings. I mean if this fails, you’ll be ruined.” “If we don’t try it then we just give up. Is that what you want, to go down without a fight?” “No,” I said. “You’ve got six months to turn a profit. Then I’m closing the place down.”

I wished I’d kept my big mouth shut. I sat at home that night in front of my PC trying to think of the next step. I’d never run a business before, let alone a wrestling promotion. I looked through my list of contacts and stopped on Kris Turkleton. He used to be a part of the Xtreme Danger Wrestling roster until it closed two weeks back. He used to come over now and again for a muck about in the basement. XDW even filmed a secret show there. But I digress. Maybe Kris was looking for work. I gave him a call and told him of my plans. He took the bait and I reeled him in. He came straight over. We had a work out in the basement, downed a few beers and eventually got to talking business. It was quite a fruitful evening. We managed to come up with a name we both agreed with, and the back bones of a product that represented what we wanted to see. World Championship Wrestling. We would focus on the more mainstream elements, deciding early on that the goal of WCW was to make money, and therefore we should try to attract as big an audience as possible. Another strong feature would be a focus on the traditional. We figured USPW had enough of a following with their traditional, nostalgic 1980’s style - it wouldn’t hurt to tap into that and possibly offer their fans a younger alternative. As you can see. We both had big ideas. But the reality was soon to hit us.

The next morning, Kris called me bright and early. It was good to see he had caught the bug and was excited about our little project. He told me he had been on the phone until early in the morning calling old pals. He felt, in his opinion, that he had acquired enough of a roster to hold a show by the end of the month. This was moving faster than I expected. He emailed me a list of the interested which I forwarded onto The Boss who in turn emailed me back saying to get a lawyer to finalise contracts. This was duly done and our roster began to take shape. Those who signed for us were: Ace Youngblood Brains McGhee Charles Davison (The Boston Bomber) Chloe Dean Dwayne Hewitt El Ladron Jack Avatar (Me) Joker The Pimp Kenny Kuntz (K-Squared) Kris Turkleton (Fearless Blue) Lee Bambino (also from XDW) Rockin’ Ryan Turner Roderick Remus Tempest Appleby (Mutant) Velocidad Warren Technique Weird Waldo Odlaw Xavier Reckless (also from XDW)

Over the next few weeks we began to set things up. My ring was transferred to the Rainbow Bar and Grill. This was actually a good, if unintended, promotional move as our few regulars began to ask questions. In the weeks before our first show the number of customers at Rainbow Bar and Grill’s began to very slowly increase as people took an interest in the ring. Not wanting to be influenced by Kris in my booking of the event I politely thanked him and told him I would be booking the shows. He was very understanding. I don’t know where wrestlers get their reputation for being egomaniacs. So, I was left alone to sift through the gimmicks and alignments as well as plan storylines and matches. Finally, a week before the show, I had a poster printed advertising our debut event: SOULED OUT Fearless Blue v Mutant K-Squared v Rockin Ryan Turner Ace Youngblood v Warren Technique MAIN EVENT FOR THE WCW WORLD TITLE JACK AVATAR V RODERICK REMUS Predictions Welcome.

Some conscious decisions I made were to have only one title: the very originally titled WCW World Championship. Another was to have no tag division. With such a small roster, and a tight budget a tag division would soon escalate costs. The Boss questioned my decision to main event the show. I explained to him that after running through some practice sessions I had more of a natural flair than I realised. It had actually been Warren Technique who had suggested that I was one of the better wrestlers on the payroll and I deserved to be at the top of the card. I personally thought Warren deserved a push and I said as much to him, but he was adamant that he stayed in the midcard to help train some of the “talent” - he used the term loosely - in the basics. Who was I to argue? I’d only ever wrestled in my basement! As the days ticked away The Boss had a surprise for me. I arrived at work one day - still in the kitchen - when The Boss threw down a sheet of paper. Upon inspection it turned out to be quite a lucrative sponsorship deal with a local brewery. He had also set up a distribution deal with a local DVD retailer to make and sell DVD’s of our events. “Just make sure Joker The Pimp keeps his tongue under control,” he warned. “They want to keep the DVDs around a PG or a PG-13.” “This is a lot of deals you’re making. We haven’t even ran a show, yet.” “That’s a bit pessimistic coming from you! I thought you’d be over the moon.” “I’m just being cautious. I’m confident, don’t get me wrong, it’s just the fact that I’m playing with your money. I think we should learn to walk before we can run.” “If we don’t run from the off, we’ll get left behind.” And so the days clicked ever closer and the hours I spent sleeping seemed less and less as nerves began to unsettle me. The Boss had high expectations on me. If I failed to deliver…

SOULED OUT, SUNDAY, WEEK 4, JANUARY 2008 RAINBOW BAR AND GRILL ATTENDANCE: 63 FEARLESS BLUE v MUTANT In the ring the night started out with a fast paced, action packed spot-fest. Meanwhile, in the kitchen I had to prepare sixty-three portions of shrimps. The crowd barely responded to the in-ring action and seemed to be there solely for the free food that accompanied the ticket. Fearless Blue got the win with a Sky Twister Press. MATCH RATING: F K-SQUARED v ROCKIN’ RYAN TURNER K-Squared came out meaning business. He had the power and the skill to win this match, but Rockin’ Ryan’s superior speed and agility won him the match when he landed the Six-String Shooter after six minutes. MATCH RATING F+ Ace Youngblood came out to the ring congratulating Rockin’ Ryan on his lucky win, claiming that the Gods in their spinning discs in the sky must be looking favourably upon him. He then announced that he wanted to have a go at Ryan to see who they truly favoured. Ryan left the ring, perplexed and leaving the crowd without an answer. ANGLE RATING: F ACE YOUNGBLOOD v WARREN TECHNIQUE This was the closest match so far with both competitors giving their all. A portion of the crowd started to get into the show as several times Technique came close to ending the match with an STF, but it was a Flying Tomahawk Chop that laid Technique out long enough for Youngblood to get the cover and the win. MATCH RATING: E- JACK AVATAR v RODERICK REMUS The vacant WCW World Championship belt was shown to the crowd as Chloe Dean paraded it around the ring. This was another close affair with both of us going all out. There were many near pins by both sides as we showed off our technical prowess. Finally, after twenty three minutes I pinned Roderick Remus after hitting him with a Pretty Boy to become the first WCW World Champion. MATCH RATING: D- FINAL SHOW RATING: E+

It wasn’t a great show, but considering it was our first I was happy with the quality on display. It at least gave me something to work on. As I left the ring I could hear people muttering about my win. My controversial decision to take the title on our first night was a deliberate ploy to get bums back on seats in a months time. I was expecting some heel heat to get the fans against me, but that plan backfired as they loved the fact that I had the balls to make such a bold move. From comments on our website message board I was apparently a good and worthy champ. The next morning The Boss approached me with a grim look on his face. “What’s the damage?” I asked. “$500, give or take the odd dollar. You have five months left.” That was all he needed to say. I may be WCW champion, but how long would the ship remain afloat?

The buzz from the local community was good enough to increase business at first, but towards the end of the month things started to slip a little. The Boss informed me that at this rate it was hardly enough of an increase to be called a life line. During this time I continued to grill steaks and prawns while working on this months card in my spare time. The card for February looked like this: SIN Ace Youngblood v Xavier Reckless El Ladron v Velocidad Jack Avatar v Weird Waldo Odlaw MAIN EVENT Rockin’ Ryan Turner v Roderick Remus Looking back I’m miffed at why I didn’t put my title on the line. We only had one show a month and where I am now I understand the need to keep the belt in the fans mind. Maybe I was secretly coveting it, or maybe the shock of my backfired plan was scared of another backfire. I honestly cannot say. But the fact remains I didn’t put the belt on the line. Would that damage things? Would it turn me heel? Who knows? Wrestling’s a funny business. OOC: Predictions welcome
