panix04
It can't be that common 'cos i googled a few things and couldn't really find any info. Basically for about the past 2 or 3 months i constantly wake up at almost exactly the same time of night, feeling really dis-orientated with a wierd sense of Deja Vu. Now up till today i was actually a little concerned about my own mental health (my wife has been for years!) but at work a colleague confessed to having a similar ailment (and oddly around a similar time of night) Now i'm not a good sleeper anyway, i constantly wake up randomly with feelings of extreme dread. I sometimes wake up and think i see ghosts. I think its just an over active imagination thing but its getting to the point where i actually fear going to sleep! Which is less than ideal! I'm worried about seeing a doctor though, 'cos i don't want to get commited or something!!! And as you guys don't have my address im throwing it open to you! Anyone have similar experiences and can lend a bit of advice?
Nevermore
lend a bit of advice?
See a doctor! They're not gonna commit you; that costs them money :D! You'll have no idea what you're dealing with unless you see your GP. He ma well refer you, though. As I've previously stated, I don't like the NHS but that is what it's there for. panix04
yeah, i'm not a fan of doctors, since i went there with a bad shoulder about 4 years ago, it was so painful i couldn't do my eaasy, peasy office job and he didnt look at my shoulder, was really abrupt with me and prescribed me some piils and sent me on my way. It made me feel really horrible! If i can avoid a visit i will and i especially don't want to speak to them about this, 'cos it makes me sound like a nut job! Which i don't mind on an internet forum, but coming accorss as a crazy person when face to face with someone is far more daunting!

No offence intended but it is. They are paid (often a ridiculously high sum of money) to accomodate you. If they're short with you either lump it 'cos it will benefit you in the long-run or tell 'em to sort it out. You can always report them if they're an arsehole. Point is, no one here is a psychiatrist and, even if they had exactly the same symptoms as you, it could be caused by a completely different disorder. If you're not sleeping, it needs sorting and seeing a doctor is probably the only decent way forward. Just my two cents, though. Hope you start catching some better Z's either way ;). AfRoMaN36
Well typically, your body has it's own set alarm clock. So if you're accustomed to waking up at 3 in the morning, your body will normally tell you to wake up at 3 in the morning. And if it happens often enough for you to start noticing the pattern, your subconscious will start doing it just to continue it. I had this issue for a bit and it's almost like you stop yourself mid dream to say "Hey.... what time is it? 3 in the morning? Oh, its that time again... WAKE UP!!" Then I couldn't go back to sleep. In fact, my sleeping problems were so bad I had to rely on NyQuill for a few nights to help knock me out and stay down until it just fixed itself. ... Then again, I think you may just be crazy. I in fact, I'm pretty sure that's the one thing your wife and I have in common. ;)

Quote The Raven Nevermore
What he said lol. Think of it like this. Sleep is essential to maintaining long term mental health (as well as physical). So, in your attempt to not get "committed", you are only going to pro-long a situation in which you aren't getting enough sleep. Thus deteriorating your mental health (albeit slowly) and essentially ruining your plan to not get "committed" anyway. :p In all seriousness though, you sleep problems could be from any number of things ranging from mental health issues like anxiety to actual physical ailments like sleep apnea. Overall it's better to just see a doctor than try and self-diagnose it. And this has nothing to do with anything, but any of us who have exchanged e-mails with you or had any contact with you outside of just posting already know your name Lee-*****; so really finding your address and having you committed is easy enough  :p
falling_star
If you like drinking tea, try brewing some strong chamomile tea. Or, and I don't know if they have this internationally or not, but the US there is a product called Sleepy Time Tea that will have you sleeping peacefully in about 30 minutes. You could also try buying some valerian root to chew on, or a supplement containing valerian. You could also try a melatonin supplement; melatonin is a hormone produced by the body when you sleep that helps you get healthier, better sleep. I guess, given what you're describing, melatonin might be the route to go; it might help your body realise that you need to keep sleeping. I am not a physician, nor do I claim to have any medical training; I have, however, suffered from essentially the same problem and these are things I tried to varying degress of success. mjdgoldeneye
As said, you should go see a professional... However, my fresh and recent biology studies has given me an idea of what your ailment might be. I suspect a disorder with the pineal gland. It's a tiny gland in your brain that uses a hormone called melatonin to regulate sleep. Basically, if it acts up, the same symptoms occur as are happening with you. I'm sure, if that's the case, it's not a big deal, and probably fixable through medication if necessary.
WrestleManiac
I'm deinatly not an expert but it sounds like night terrors. My girlfriend suffers from them and when she went to the doctors about it they siad it was due to stress. Are you stressed? Is there something in your life that you can't get off your mind? My girlfriend has suffered these since her mother passed away four years ago and she wakes up - at least once a month, sometimes more - with a feeling that she is being crushed. If it is stress related than a counciler may help. Like I say to my girlfriend, if it bothers you see the doctor.
SuperOwens
I don't think your mental... I will wake up sometimes and not be able to move, its like im trying to open my eyes and move my arms but i just cant. It has something to do with one the side of your brain that controls motor skills not being 'awake' yet. It will pass after 5 - 10 seconds. Im also always waking up with a start and think that the chair in my bedroom is an evil hooded undertaker sent from hell to kill me, its always just a chair though. Im sure everybody experiences stuff like that

There are many things that can cause it, different forms of Sleep Apnea. There are "drugs" that can help you with it as well, unless it's from being overweight. Overweight will only be cured by losing weight (obviously). As I know what you look like, I'm going to count that one out, OK;). It could be caused from all kinds of different things, from Anxiety, to something historic in your life that happened around that time of year... Basically, it could be anything. That's why seeing a doctor could really help you, if you have no idea what's causing it yourself. What happens quite a bit with people that have problems sleeping, is that they never reach that final stage of sleep (the one that makes you wake up energetic and ready to face the day). Lots of people suffer mildly from this, and don't even know it. You know you do if you do not wake up refreshed. I never wake up refreshed. I use strong coffee as my medicine, as I constantly wake up several times during the night. I've talked about it a couple times in Mafia games. I have mild insomnia. Sometimes I just stay up a few days at a time, but as I've aged, this has happened less and less. I post sometimes on this board at 2, 3, 4am... However, I have been trying to go to sleep since around 10pm usually (like now). I was prescribed Ambients to help me with it, and they work great. The only problem I have is that I can't afford the cost of it (and going to see the doctor every time I need a new prescription). So I just deal with it, and I've been quite successfully. I do want to stress that the medicine I took let me sleep 6 to 8 hours every night that I took one, and I mean sleep. I have never woke up that refreshed in my life (that I can remember). When I woke up, I would WAKE up. Meaning, I wasn't groggy, sleepy or anything like that. This is what they say is "NORMAL". However, from what I read, this is something that the majority of people do not get. You have sleep stages, http://www.sleepdex.org/stages.htm. Stages 3 and 4 are deep sleep, but it sounds to me like your not getting there. This is for the other poster as well, the one that has "Sleep Paralysis" lol. He's not going farther then stage 1. This is the stage that you can feel like your falling, or sinking sensation, and can feel like being sad or depressed, sometimes overwhelmed or underwhelmed (what am I doing with my life?). These are not NORMAL, but are experienced by billions. SO.. I guess in a way it is "normal", since the majority do not reach all the stages of sleep. This thread for me, is one of those threads someone starts a topic that is like the story of my life. Sorry for the long read. Hopefully somehow this helps you with your decision of what to do next. I should point out, that if this is something "New" to you, it might be something that left unattended could very well get worse... Just as likely to go away after a time period as well. If I were you, I would at least go see a doctor and get some advice, even if you decide to not follow through, you might be able to find out how serious (or non-serious) the situation is with yourself personally. We have a winner! :D Seriously though, I was on a Stress Management course not so long ago as I suffer from Anxiety. I sleep fine because it's only when I'm awake and in certain situations that my Anxiety kicks in. However there was one session all about sleep, and you sound like you have a stress related sleeping problem. Don't think of stress as "Aaargh I have too much work to do" pulling hair out stress, it counts for worrying about stuff too even subconsciously. There's a thing called Sleep Hygiene, which basically retrains you on how to sleep and I'm told it's really very useful, but you'll probably want to take a week or two off work to be able to do it
panix04
you see i doubt it could be stress related, 'cos i don't tend to suffer from stress, in fact i enjoy it! lol But you guys have convinced me to see a doctor for advice.
infinitywpi
Is it a time of night you used to wake up during? After a year in college where I had to set my alarm for 7am classes, I woke up at that same time for another six months before I got back onto a "I can sleep 'til lunch" schedule. And I still wake up for that 7am class sometimes.
