James Casey
Does anyone know if it's possible to get a wireless router that also supports a USB connection to associated computers? I'm currently considering buying a new laptop as my desktop won't recognise a wirless signal or one carried through a netowrk cable. However, I know that it'll go online through a USB cable (if anyone can explain this to me, feel free) so am wondering if replacing my router might be the way to go - at least for a few months until I finally cave and get myself the new laptop I probably should have got two years ago... Anyway, does anyone know if it's possible?

You just plug it into the USB port of your laptop (or PC for that matter; my dad has his PC connect to the wireless home network in this manner) , and connect to your current wireless network so you don't need to buy a new router, just the adapter. I'll leave the research up to you.
James Casey
Ah, should have said. I've tried two wireless adapters, a wireless card, ethernet cables... Really, all I'm left with is the possibility of taking the PC into a shop on the off chance they can fix it - but I'm not holding out much chance of that :( Ah well, £700 on a new laptop... Not so much, is it?

I know of wireless routers that also support usb printer servers... Never seen a wireless router that supports internet usb.
sprinklefurball
Most new laptops have wireless cards built in.
James Casey
Has to be a laptop - a desktop needs a lot of space and we live in a two-bed flat where the study/computer room could be turned into a nursery in the next year or so... ...kids take over your life, even before you have them

Now if it was just ethernet cable I would say it would be your NIC card. But if it wont allow a USB adapter plugged in to get wireless signal then it is all settings related. If you already have a USB network adapter (I assume because you said your desktop cant get wireless signal), you can share you internet with ICS thru your desktop. Basically your desktop becomes a router. Its actually really easy to set up. I bought a USB adapter last year to use this for. I have PS3 and Wii that have built in wireless but I had no wireless router. I heard about using a USB adapted as an access point so I tried it out and it worked. Back to your desktop only working with a USB cord. I would say goto device manager and make sure driver is updated, and make sure NIC card is enabled to start with. sabataged
Also have you tried a different cable? Sometimes those things fry out and just quit working. Or sometimes people use a cross-over cable instead of a patch cable because they look exactly the same.
