Pete Hall sighs, looking down at the bartop rather than meeting the camera's accusing 'eye'. “We had a discussion, me and Andrew and Dangerous, in early November about where the title scene was going to go after Tommy's run finished. I forget at this point exactly what it was that made Dangerous keen on me. I mean, obviously the fact we'd had the best couple of matches in company history helped – but I wasn't turning it on against anyone else yet, or not so well. “And I was bogged down with Mike and our projects, Travis and Troy. No offence to either of the guys, but I think if you asked them they'd admit they needed work one way or another at the time. Travis in particular was keen to take any tip he could in the ring, and if you stand next to Mike when he's on the stick you can't help but improve, even if you're as good as Travis already was. Like I say, I don't really remember the reasons behind it at the time, though either of the bosses probably could tell you. Anyroad up, the big stumbling block was how well I was doing with GCG at the time. I was only being booked a tour at a time, but I was getting some of the best reviews they had and it seemed likely I was going to have to concentrate on overseas work soon.” -- Barber nodded. “We needed the belt to come off Tommy before he just ran over everyone we could put him up against. Brent was the first choice, but he'd had a bunch of shots at Tommy before the time was right and we felt he needed a bit more work before he was ready to challenge again. Tom Gilmore was still busy with John, which none of us saw as a main event thing, and Chris Rockwell...” He chuckles slightly, glancing away. “Actually, if it hadn't been Pete Horatio would've pushed for it to be Chris. At the time I was still mad at him for leaving at the start of the year, and I wanted him to show he was going to stick around first.” -- “The big problem with Pete was pretty simple, and it was Japan,” Dangerous nods. “The big upside was just the prestige. Nowadays, one of the things people remember about Philly Pro is we gave Tommy Cornell his first title. But we gave Pete his first, too, and out of the pair of them Pete did us the bigger favour – because it was him getting the belt that made people pay attention to the belt. With his career to date the purists preferred him. “That was a lot of why I wanted Pete to get the win. Tommy had brought us a bigger audience and Pete brought us press. The fact was, though, the reason it actually worked was that Pete was a hell of a wrestler, and he was probably best placed to keep up the standard Tommy had set. Plus...” He smiled. “I just wanted Pete to get the belt. He'd made Philly Pro the place where he relaunched his career, come to us when we were bleeding talent, and I still believe that that display of faith helped us bring in a lot of the talent that turned 1997 around. A run with the Tri-State belt had always been in my plans, but by the time we were ready to do that, Pete was working with Hanshiro and just doing far better than anyone expected. When PGHW took Jimmy away from us – and Hanshiro – I really started to wonder if we'd have time to give Pete what I felt he had earned and what I felt he deserved. And then, suddenly, he finished his first tour and... nothing.” -- Pete nods reminiscently. “For a full month, nothing. Going into Old School Rock we had two ways we could end the title match, and it was pretty much the day before that we decided for sure we were going with the title change and the Last Man Standing stip. Because if I wasn't working in Japan, I couldn't be on the edge of going over permanently. I made a quiet agreement with Andrew that I'd stick Philly Pro exclusive for the duration of the title run...” He shrugged. “The world has a way of waiting for things like that. I don't know if it was the news I'd won the title or what...” -- “I think that may have been part of it,” Barber nods. “Mr Furusawa called Pete the day after Old School Rock and offered him a sweet enough deal for one tour that the bar could afford to be in the red all year if he took it. He told him to wait for a return call and phoned me. “I was very possessive about Philly Pro, and I'm still damn proud of what we did before and after Horatio came in. Pete expected me to hold him to the deal despite the numbers, but it was such a good offer that I couldn't bring myself to forbid it. “I told him to go ahead. Three days after Pete's first title defence in the Skid Row Club, he beat Kazu Yoshizawa in Matsue Sports Park. Three thousand in the audience and an easy best match for the night. He was only the fourth ever gaijin to hold the GCG World Heavyweight championship belt, and two of the others were Dread and Rip Chord. “He called Horatio after the match. I happened to be round there discussing what we were going to do with Ricky, Sammy and the rest of the youngsters. We worked out six months' plans and then got so drunk celebrating what one of ours had just done that we forgot every single one.”

I wavered on the tag match a little, but loathe Whistler enough to pick against him out of spite. :D

Barber and Jackson make it clear on commentary that after Money saved Sanders two weeks ago, Money requested this title shot – and Sanders, who's been a willing champion so far, was only too glad to oblige him. The two go into this friendly-like, hold for hold, exchanges, breaks, nods of appreciation. It stays friendly for six or seven minutes and Sanders begins to assert a clear upper hand, breaking holds faster, innovating more, and Money scrambles to keep up. Ultimately, they face off one last time. Money offers a handshake of respect, Sanders accepts, and Money kicks him in the gut, clasps him close, rolls Sanders up and reaches out smoothly to hook the ropes with both feet. It's a beautiful display, fluid and flowing but timed well enough that Money's feet aren't in evidence until Fair is down to make the count; SWF viewers easily recognise it as a classic Money spot, already perfected. All of a sudden, Rich Money is the Maximum Champion, and as the crowd collect their reactions, applause begins, magnified by a microphone, from the entrance ramp... Rich Money defeated Rick Sanders Rating: D Floyd Goldworthy appears, all smiles, atop the ramp. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he begins, as Sanders collects himself, staring in disbelief at Money as Jay Fair hands him the belt, “it's a central question with money; how do you support it? How do you back it? Money talks, but what gives it that voice? “As of this morning, Rich Money is on the Gold standard. Backed by gold, wearing the gold, and under a full-warranty Gold Guarantee. And that means, Rick – you're yesterday's news.” Smiling, Money pivots on one foot, belt held out. Sanders eats the metal in the face and drops like a stone. Casually, the new Maximum champ belts the gold around his waist, climbing the top turnbuckle... “You know,” Goldworthy says casually, “Sanders held out against the Disciples. But with us, he had no guarantee.” And Money is in the air, the Dollars from Heaven crashing down onto Sanders with the belt amping the impact. Smiling, Rich Money rolls out of the ring and dusts his hands off, satisfied; walking up the ramp and into 1998 as a full-fledged heel. As the Gold Guarantees exit, they're swiftly replaced; Whistler and Black Jack Marlowe emerge, sporting the red, white and blue as ever. Whistler has a microphone in hand. “You won't have heard the news,” he opens. “We've been talking, Jack and me. And we've decided, things being what they are, it's time to make our little double act a permanent thing. We held off on talking about this two weeks ago because, no disrespect to the gang in New England, we both feel this city is our home base. “It's where I've come to live these past seven years. I'm not a native and nor is Jack. And the name we've chosen for our team, well, it's an aspiration as much as a claim. We aim to earn our name. We're here in the home of liberty and we want to tell you all we see that as something to live up to. “We're calling ourselves Philly's Own. We just hope that you'll give us the chance to show we deserve that. “We're busy tonight. A little trouble I've been having with someone who doesn't understand freedom of religion. But we'd like to start 1998 the right way. John McClean – Punisher – I hope you're listening in the back, not tearing through Idaho with ball bats and brass knucks. John reminded us two weeks ago the pair of you hold gold, and we want to come back to Philadelphia with it around our waists. So please – give us the chance.” The fans react pretty well to Whistler's soft-sell, and you can see the tension dissolve out of Marlowe, who hasn't really learned to dissemble the way Whistler has. Philadelphia fans being what they are, getting on their bad side can kill you. “Show them what you're made of, and Philly will welcome you into their hearts.” The voice begins before its owner emerges; Tom Gilmore arrives atop the ramp and smiles. “You boys come out with me tonight and show Philly what you've got, huh? We'll have a good time. And I know the hardest-working wild man in wrestling needs a night out,” he continues, winking at Jack. “By the way, Johnny's busy tonight, so you might wanna check the news in Idaho to make sure one of them heard you. What I want to do, though,” and he grins, “is pretty similar. I've asked the boss-man for a match tonight, and he's let me have it. But I want to talk about Johnny McClean. “He gave us all a pretty frank recounting of his issues with me two weeks back. Hell, maybe I should justa said his issues. Either way, I feel for him, I really do; the guy needs to loosen up. Thing is, you can lead a dork to the bar but you can't make him pull; I've offered him what help I can, what help I know how to give. “It's time we settled this, Johnny. Let's start the new year clean. This time next month – let's you and me finish this. I know the grapevine'll catch you up on this; give me your answer next week, OK?” Hardcore Tag Match vs. w/ Philly's Own vs. Disciples of Evil w/ Professor Nero The big issue with Whistler during matches has always been reliability; motivated, he'll deliver on a level you'd think was beyond his skillset. But it's seldom that he reaches those heights, and often it's the very opposite. That's the issue here tonight, too; thankfully, however, this match plays to the strengths of most of the participants. Rapidly this becomes all-four-men-in; Tornado has his tyre iron, Marlowe packs a baseball bat. Whistler and Century stick chiefly to their fists but break out just about anything they can during a series of more-or-less contrived spots, with the Professor circling at ringside and helping to make those sequences seem natural. But the star of this contest is Black Jack Marlowe, put into a position that highlights his skills, his headband eventually turned a sodden dark red mass by repeated tyre iron work, but still Marlowe is unbowed, standing tall and unleashing. In desperation Century and Tornado combine, with Tornado sacrificing himself by hurling himself onto the swing and incapacitating the bat; Century comes in with a blindside high knee, propelling Marlowe to the floor – and Nero is there with the moment that stops the match... Philly's Own and the Disciples of Evil fought to a double stoppage Rating: D- Nero's hand flashes forward and the fireball that was so famous in the TWL – usually at the hands of Sheik Mustafa, Nero's sometime-ally – flares into existence, blinding Marlowe. Whistler is busy in the ring, dropping Century with a running shoulderblock, bodyslamming Century, but the light catches his eye and he rolls out of the ring. As the Disciples lay motionless, their leader unleashes another flare into Whistler's eyes, leaving Philly's Own blinded. Nero's insane cackle rises above the suddenly hushed, uneasy crowd. Fair is furious, but Nero doesn't care; as the Disciples slowly rouse themselves, the trio vanish away... vs. Richard Dangerous vs. Clark Alexander Tom Gilmore joins the announce team for this match, cheerfully noting his sometime-protege's progress throughout. The action isn't stilted, nor particularly awkward; it is, however, very basic, like wrestling 101 turned into a match, and those sequences that rise beyond that have clearly been laid out in advance. It's not particularly bad, but it's only barely good enough – but in the end, the Ice Man falls, Dangerous redeeming his prior loss with the Dangerous Brainbuster. Richard Dangerous defeated Clark Alexander Rating: E+ JD Morgan appears again, swaggering down to the ring as Oi Oi Oi sounds through the speakers; the old-fashioned London punk style is beginning to catch on with some of the Philly crowd, and Wanda Fish having adjusted her outfit to suit doesn't hurt. “Time we spoke again, Toddy boy,” Morgan laughs. “Warned you what was coming last time. That hasn't changed – and next time we wrestle, good news for you, you'll be able to say you had a title shot against the Tri-State champion – but I was just wondering, lad, if you had any thoughts for me? Any little Hype for your match?” The Hype rushes out fast and angry – and behind him is Horatio Dangerous. Wanda drops from the ring and sprints forward; the Hype falters, Dangerous spins him round – the Hype drives Dangerous back with a swift punch – and Wanda low blows the Hype. Recovering, Dangerous drops him with a piledriver on the entrance aisle. “I also got you a match, lad,” JD says. “A warm up against a scary enough hombre to represent me without exactly giving you a chance to scout me. A different kind of guy...” He smiles. “Mr Stately was all too happy when I told him what shape you'd be in.” Dangerous hits a second piledriver for good measure and the Invasion leave. w/ vs. Man Mountain Cahill w/ Herb Stately vs. The Hype Stately's a hard worker for his kayfabe 'client'; a generous one, too. Only the smarkiest viewer tends to register that it was his actions and calls that enhanced Cahill's aura. And there's a lot of work to do here; the Hype, in his semi-concussed storyline condition, can't provide flash and flare for the match. What story there is is the durability of a man who despite his pre-match mauling still kicks out of the Man Mountain's first pin and who attempts to fight back – but ultimately this is the tale of Goliath facing a David shorn of all tricks, and it doesn't look good for the little guy. Five minutes in, Cahill seems almost to relent, scoring the Cahill Crunch and winning with only the second pinfall attempt of the match – but at least the punishment is over. The crowd bellow disapproval. Man Mountain Cahill defeated The Hype Rating: D- Cahill celebrates – and then pauses; his eye is on Emma Chase again, as Easy-E applauds from a front row seat. As the big man stares – and Stately scowls at her – she winks, a long, slow wink that allows the crowd as a whole to pick up what's going on – and then she blows the big man a kiss, before rising and vanishing toward the exit. Cahill starts for her – Stately restrains him. There's a whispered conference in the centre of the ring that ends only reluctantly with the big man heading back up the ramp. vs. w/ Sandy Townsley vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama Townsley, Gilmore's fellow NOTBPW worker, doesn't get much exposure in Philly Pro, though he's a hard worker and improving his craft. The time is, likely, coming for him to do more, and his contest with Gilmore is far from a bad match; it's hindered by Townsley's relative insignificance in the Philly Pro schema, making the result a close-to foregone conclusion, and it's hindered by the fact that, well, Townsley ain't that well known. Gilmore debuts a nifty grounded submission here; after dropping Townsley face down, he drops a knee into the small of his back, snakes an arm under his chin, and pulls back, forcing Townsley to look up into the arena lights... Sandy taps quickly. Tom Gilmore defeated Sandy Townsley Rating: D+ vs. w/ Chris Rockwell vs. Horatio Dangerous w/ Jack Giedroyc A surprisingly short contest here, given their prior outings, and that probably has to do with the fact it's the weakest yet. Rockwell and Dangerous have one basic story, that of a technician's one-upsmanship contest, but with the versatility of both men this tale can be wrenched into a thousand and one different chapters. Here, Rockwell begins to dominate early, working Dangerous' arm in preparation for the rapidly-more-threatening Fujiwara armbar; sensing danger, Giedroyc plays more of a role than usual, coming into the ring and nailing the Crashing On when Fair checks on a possum-playing Horatio; as Rockwell drops, Horatio springs back up, coming in and picking him up for the swinging full nelson; Richard Dangerous flies into the ring and breaks the hold, rolling out of the ring to fight Giedroyc to the back. Ruffled by this, Horatio turns back to the match – only to be whipped down to the mat and locked into the armbar. He holds out, but eventually submits. Chris Rockwell defeated Horatio Dangerous Rating: D+ PPPW Tri-State Championship vs. w/ Pistol Pete Hall © vs. JD Morgan w/ Wanda Fish The final show of the night tops off a lacklustre card, to say the least. Morgan and Hall simply can't get their styles to mesh, and on top of that, Morgan shows signs of being slow and uncomfortable in the ring, clutching his stomach from time to time – particularly after a big slam. Wanda does her best to cover it, but the results aren't good; 1997 ends with a main event of the same calibre that ushered it in. The high point? Tommy Cornell in to end the match with a superb flip blockbuster from the top rope onto Hall in full view of Fair, drawing the DQ. Where Dangerous, two weeks ago, looked more than a little unhappy about this, Morgan simply smiles slightly and half-nods in approval, as if it had been planned from the start. Pistol Pete Hall defeated JD Morgan via DQ Rating: D It's not a good show, but the Pennsylvania Park faithful seem willing to let this one go in the spirit of Christmas cheer. PPPW 1997 FAN SURVEY It's been a rollercoaster of a year for Philly Pro fans, and when we look back on it, there've been a lot of great moments along the way. To settle the endless locker room debates about who did what best, we're turning to you, our fans. Please - tell us who excelled, what went right for who. Who made you care for them? Whose skill did you admire in the ring? Tell us who rose above in 1997, and we'll use them as the standards everyone should strive to outdo in 1998. --- Wrestler of the Year Tommy Cornell Entering strong and going straight for gold, Tommy's year recovered with Philly Pro after a nasty setback at the beginning... Brent Hill The prodigal son returns, not before claiming gold elsewhere in 1996 and here in Philly Pro as the inaugural holder of the Pride of Philadelphia trophy. Pistol Pete Hall Talking of returns... Hall has had success worldwide this year, despite only returning to active competition halfway through the year after a five-month hiatus. All that promise is finally being paid off. JD Morgan Three-time champion elsewhere, and a well-trained submission specialist. Can it be long before Morgan collects a championship in Philly Pro? Horatio Dangerous In the thick of things since his debut, Dangerous is older than anyone on the roster but Professor Nero - and he's proved repeatedly that experience matters. Tom Gilmore Former AMW World Heavyweight Champion, Gilmore survived a broken ankle and maintained an unbeaten streak from his debut to the end of November, only eventually losing to the champion. --- Feud of the Year Krusher Karloff vs. Pistol Pete Hall It was, they told us, all about respect. Floyd Goldworthy and his Russian ally demanded a show of respect from the recovering Hall, only to be denied. After reacting violently, Hall first brought in Brent Hill, then the Hype, and eventually stepped up himself to prove a point. John Maverick vs. Jimmy Cox One man, one move. Both Maverick and Cox are known for their single speciality move, but during Goldworthy's crusade for respect they singled out Cox as being unable to back it up with the arsenal Maverick boasts, leading to a hard-fought contest between the two. Tom Gilmore vs. John McClean The clash of philosophies between these two rapidly turned physical. A dispute that began over the Maximum Championship would cost Gilmore his chance for the Tri-State championship and his unbeaten streak. This battle has yet to resolve. Travis Century vs. Whistler The Dark Preacher has repeatedly taken issue with the fan support enjoyed by Whistler, but never before this year had it become so personal. A war of words and fists has been a constant presence in Philly Pro these past several months, with both sides bringing in a variety of allies. Professor Nero vs. Pistol Pete Hall We're told that this dispute goes back ten years and all the way down south to Texas. This grudge has seen Hall once again bring in allies to the promotion while Nero has gone so far as to form the latest incarnation of the Disciples of Evil to prove his point. Travis Century vs. Rick Sanders Common decency a sin? It's debatable - but what isn't debatable is the impact the Dark Preacher had on the first half of Sanders' 1997, pulling out wins with a broad range of dirty tricks, hectoring him at all turns. Like so many other issues, this one stems from Pistol Pete's arrival, and Sanders offering him a ringside seat... The Hype vs. The British Invasion Tommy Cornell. Horatio Dangerous. JD Morgan. Three legendary names trained in the British style, together in Philly Pro with formidable allies. Set against them? The Hype - a youngster with everything to prove, seeking to make a name for himself and stand up for individual talent against collective scheming. --- Debut of the Year 'Easy' Emma Chase She's one of the East Coast's legendary names and someone you'd never expect to see outside the clutches of a rival company. Philly Pro officials still haven't worked out how she got backstage - though we can guess - but one thing's for sure; she's here for excitement, and we're all gonna get it. JD Morgan A commanding performance against Rich Money and a welcoming into arguably the most impressive group in Philly Pro marked his arrival. Undefeated two months later, he rolled into the Pride of Philadelphia tournament and beat two major players on his way to a close loss in the final - a loss he's since redeemed for a shot at the Tri-State Championship. Tommy Cornell For most of the year Man Mountain Cahill has been one of the scariest men on the East Coast. On his arrival, Cornell not only survived him but dismantled him, earning a contract. A mere month later he was champion. Troy Tornado It's hard to argue with being hand-picked by a legend like Mycroft Nero. It's hard to argue against a man who arrives by destroying Pistol Pete Hall with his back turned. Since then, even when unsuccessful Tornado has left an impact, losing due to extreme violence and disqualification rather than a weak performance. 1998 promises to be a bloody year for this Disciple of Evil. Sammy Bach The Boy Wonder's start was, arguably, inauspicious. But he did what no one else has done - he survived Cahill's Corner and returned to try again. His performance over the following months bought him not only a Philly Pro contract but two others in one of the most lucrative rookie seasons on record. Richard Dangerous Arriving with his father at the start of 1997, this young man seemed easy prey for the experienced grapplers in the locker room - but while he's had his losses since, he opened by overcoming the 'Scientific Superstar' Bryan Holmes, and after being pursued to settle the score managed to do so - by beating him again.
OOC: Thanks - sincerely - to everyone who's reading this diary. Since I started this, Philly Pro has won the Rookie DOTM, received a couple of nods in the Diary of the Year awards, and been nominated in extremely strong fields every month for the C-Verse DOTM. You have no idea how appreciative I am of that support. I'm grateful for every comment I receive and every prediction that's made. That said, if you provide feedback nowhere else - please take the time to respond to this poll, and similar ones at the end of each 'year' - they'll give me a better idea of what areas (and workers) I need to work on. Over the next three days I'm continuing this year-end steal from Tigerkinney - uh, year-in-review - with, as promised, a reproduction of a wrestling journalist's roster breakdown. Note that everything in there is informed opinion, rumour, guesswork, or hearsay; that doesn't mean, however, that none of it will turn out to be true. Thanks again for reading, and see you in 1998!
Wrestler Of The Year: Brent Hill. While Tommy came with greater fame, while Pete has made legendary achievements in Japan, while I really, really want to vote for Tom Gilmore... He's Brent Hill. He's PPPW home-grown talent. He's one of ours. One of our best. He truly is the Pride of Philadelphia. And for that, he gets my vote. Feud Of The Year: Travis Century vs. Whistler. America versus psycho arsehole Christianity. Whistler fighting for something other than an American Way that is ultra-conservative or bland beyond all reason. Travis Century cutting truly awesome promos. Yes, I think I could vote for this one. Debut Of The Year: Tommy Cornell. It has to be. Straight off the back of the Bloodbath, he comes in, turns massive fan recognition into Heel heat in grand style, and goes on to brng the goods in the ring and out of it, jumping up to lead the dominant Heel faction of the company. His victory over the unstoppable Cahill? He started as he meant to go on.

With thanks to Philly Power Pro Wrestling We had a lot of subtitles for this article, ranging from 'The Little Company that Could' to 'Veterans of the Coast War'. Too difficult to pick one in the end, and hardly the point. Coming out of 1996 PPPW was tipped to be one of the big losers on the East Coast, alongside the fallen AMW. Both of them had talent being misused and workers who were obvious candidates to go to more successful promotions in the area. Twelve months later, Andrew Barber's boys have put out the best show in eight out of the twelve months, doubled their schedule, and shocked the world when Tommy Cornell chose them to mount his comeback from. But who are the talent that make up this motley band? PWA takes an in-depth look at their Philly Pro performances to date... Black Jack Marlowe (Philly's Own) From: New York City Billed From: One Of Philly's Own Age: 22 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 8-1-3 / Avg Match Rating: D- Finishers: Jackhammer (Suplex Powerslam) Theme Song: AC/DC – Back in Black Other Achievements: Current NYCW United States Champion Marlowe has only spent eight months with PPPW so far; he seems to have been slated for the tag division from the off, teaming with a wide variety of talent through the year – which in many ways accounts for the poor reaction a typical Marlowe match has achieved. Toward the end of the year management has begun to show more faith in him than simply allowing him to float into the midcard; he became one of Whistler's allies against Travis Century and parlayed that into a full-fledged tag team who look to be challenging for gold in the new year and, notably, he was permitted to defeat multi-time champion Krusher Karloff, lifting the big man off his feet for the Jackhammer in what I predict will be a intro clip moment if PPPW ever get a TV deal. 'Boy Wonder' Sammy Bach From: Providence, Rhode Island Billed From: Providence, Rhode Island Age: 19 Current Push: Opener 1997 Record: 2-0-2 / Avg Match Rating: D Finishers: Bach Off (Set-up Superkick) Theme Song: Ramones – Blitzkrieg Bop Other Achievements: One of the most unusual introductions to a company showed, over a period of months, how much faith Barber & Dangerous have in this young man, and his performances both in front of the live audience and in warm-up matches has justified that so far. A breath of something new in the company, Bach's biggest problem is how to make himself a more attractive prospect to develop than the numerous other youngsters. Brent Hill From: Albany, New York Billed From: Albany, New York Age: 27 Current Push: Main Eventer 1997 Record: 16-0-7 / Avg Match Rating: C Finishers: King of the Hill (Top Rope Splash), Complete Package (sit-out dragon sleeper) Theme Song: Iron Maiden – Two Minutes To Midnight Other Achievements: First winner of the Pride of Philadelphia tournament. Surprisingly returned from Rapid Pro Wrestling in February, Hill has gone on to have about as good a year as a man can have with a company without actually winning gold, regularly headlining and even scoring victories over a strong champion. With the events rumoured to be happening backstage over the Christmas period, it would be surprising if Brent Hill closes out 1998 without claiming more gold. Bryan Holmes From: Vancouver, Canada Billed From: Vancouver, Canada Age: 26 Current Push: Upper Midcarder 1997 Record: 5-0-8 / Avg Match Rating: D Finishers: Cyclone Shock Kick (Backflip kick), Final Impact (Release German Suplex) Theme Song: Faith No More - Epic Other Achievements: Both in PPPW and his other home with GCG, Holmes appears to have settled into a holding pattern as a midcard gatekeeper. While capable of more, the young man needs to find a hook to allow fans to buy into his character if he wants to progress – but he is, nonetheless, a highly useful hire for any promotion. It's this utility-heel slot that he appears to have been earmarked for in PPPW, something we at PWA think is a waste. On the other hand, this was the year that Bryan Holmes finally shed the mantle of the young lion in Japan – perhaps now we'll see Tsunami & Holmes rise. After being used to put the booker's son over in a hurry, however, we see no such bright side in PPPW. Chris Rockwell From: New York City Billed From: New York City Age: 24 Current Push: Upper Midcarder 1997 Record: 7-0-4 / Avg Match Rating: D+ Finishers: Fujiwara Armbar Theme Song: Aerosmith/Run DMC – Walk This Way Other Achievements: The Pride of New York's relationship with PPPW has been tempestuous this year, signing a contract to jump to DaVE the very morning of PPPW's first show of 1997. While his return for the Pride of Philadelphia tournament was hailed as a coup for the company showing their return from the straitened times of 1996, word has it that Barber and Dangerous are divided on his loyalty and, consequently, worth. As we come into 1998, PPPW looks like becoming as permanent as NYCW in Rockwell's list of stomping grounds – hopefully that will yield a softening on Barber's part. It's not easy being Chris Rockwell, but ten pounds of gold could change that in an instant. Clark Alexander From: Detroit, Michigan Billed From: Detroit, Michigan Age: 22 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 2-0-7 / Avg Match Rating: E+ Finishers: Ice Breaker (Shoulderbreaker) Theme Song: Foreigner – Cold As Ice Other Achievements: The Crash Course Combat graduate appears to be one of the few youngsters still best classed as developmental prospects who can be relatively sure that their job is safe. While he's been steadily losing, the Ice Man seems able to weather that storm and even turn his performances into something that helps him in the eyes of many fans. Whatever it is about his work that's done this, he can thank his lucky stars; he remains useful, though his recent run of teaming with Dead Bolt may come to work against him. Dead Bolt From: New York City Billed From: Brooklyn, New York Age: 20 Current Push: Lower Midcarder 1997 Record: 0-0-5 / Avg Match Rating: E+ Finishers: Chokeslam Theme Song: Motorhead – Sweet Revenge Other Achievements: I'll be honest; when PPPW let Ramon Paez and Dan Biliot go, I pretty much assumed Dead Bolt was dead in the water. He's still there, which may have something to do with the fact his contract's yet to come up – though some of his matches have been pre-event tune ups, so perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps Dangerous sees a reason to keep the worst of three monsters around. The running tale used to be that he was a project for Marcus McKing, but with McKing gradually being edged out of road agent duties by Professor Nero, that can't be the explanation now. The one thing that may save Bolt yet is that he has learned; just very little, and very slowly. Deano Machino From: Chicago, Illinois Billed From: Chicago, Illinois Age: 22 Current Push: Lower Midcarder 1997 Record: 2-0-5 / Avg Match Rating: D- Finishers: Cradle Piledriver Theme Song: Guns 'n' Roses, Out Ta Get Me Other Achievements: Another young man with talent (PPPW's strategy appears to be hiring the next generation and hoping they don't leave) Dean Daniels could go far – but hasn't, yet. The absence of Jimmy Cox, whose mystique is built around a better cradle piledriver, may prove a blessing in 1998; Deano just needs the time to become a truly worthwhile player. Locker room scuttlebutt talks about a mooted turn and tag run with someone. Easy Emma From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Billed From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 21 Current Push: Manager 1997 Record: N/A / Avg Match Rating: N/A Finishers: N/A Theme Song: Meat Loaf - Good Girls Go To Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere) Other Achievements: Perhaps the most telling shot fired in the East Coast War to date saw Phil Vibert's bosom buddy (Oh, c'mon – I'm supposed to resist a setup like that?) ink with Barber's boys. Dangerous clearly favours the slow build, as Chase gets the same slow tease treatment around Man Mountain Cahill that Bach received – but between the suspense of what she's doing, her 'ex called DaVE' comment, and the sheer shock that Easy Emma walked out on the hardcore company, she's been proving her worth already. People are talking, people are attending. The question becomes what Emma can achieve once the trigger's finally pulled – there must be better people to put her beside than Man Mountain Cahill. Eddie Chandler From: Thunder Bay, Canada Billed From: Thunder Bay, Canada Age: 22 Current Push: Upper Midcarder 1997 Record: 2-0-3 / Avg Match Rating: D+ Finishers: Running Powerslam Theme Song: Green Day – Brain Stew Other Achievements: It's an oddball character that the Fabulous One has been saddled with in PPPW, and while it seems designed to give him a better shot at the glass ceiling than the Feather Boa Society would provide, it's not catching on thus far among the vocal fans – partly due to Chandler's association with DaVE in the recent past. I'm hoping to see Eddie used better in the coming year, but with so many on the roster, if he can't grab attention be may soon be lost in the shuffle. Floyd Goldworthy From: Lakeville, Minnesota Billed From: Lakeville, Minnesota Age: 32 Current Push: Manager 1997 Record: N/A / Avg Match Rating: N/A Finishers: N/A Theme Song: Manic Street Preachers – Gold Against The Soul Other Achievements: It's been an interesting year for Goldworthy and his clientele. Krusher Karloff looks to be permanently out of the title chase and has come out on the wrong end of much of his feuding. John Maverick started out strong, but has been absent for a short while, concentrating on commitments with the DeColts. His most recent addition has brought gold back to the stable, however, and with Rich Money on board the quartet find themselves with more possibilities going into 1998. Is tag gold in the future of two of these men? Henry Bennett From: Murfreesboro, Tennessee Billed From: Knoxville, Tennessee Age: 23 Current Push: Lower Midcarder 1997 Record: 1-0-4 / Avg Match Rating: E+ Finishers: Elbow Lock Twist Theme Song: Magnetic Fields – Papa Was A Rodeo Other Achievements: The Trouble from Tennessee hasn't had much work in the past year. When he's come out he's typically been on the losing side in lacklustre efforts; not a walking advert for Crash Course Combat's training methods. That said, some of this probably has to do with his issues backstage; between noted issues with Travis Century and Bryan Holmes and his reported habit of trying to broker peace in the locker room, I wouldn't be surprised if he can seldom keep his mind in the ring. The Hype alone has been officially reprimanded on six occasions, and would likely have seen more had Bennett not intervened to prevent excesses at other times. Herb Stately From: New York City Billed From: New York City Age: 33 Current Push: Manager 1997 Record: N/A / Avg Match Rating: N/A Finishers: N/A Theme Song: Ronnie Cahill – Bluegrass Blues Other Achievements: PPPW's other veteran manager, Herb's seen his one client do far better than anyone expected under Dangerous. While Ronnie hasn't been in matches often, he and Herb have drawn paychecks almost as reliably as the announce team. Despite this obvious support for the team, the whisper is that Herb will be looking for another job once the Easy Emma storyline shakes out. The story has it that Dangerous sees Ronnie as a vehicle to get managers over so that they can get more talented workers over in turn – and while the Man Mountain is better known and respected now than ever, none of that has come down to Herb Stately. The veteran's own generosity – allowing all the rub to fall on his client – may see him out of a job in what many view as Dangerous' cruellest call yet. Horatio Dangerous From: Newark, Delaware Billed From: Lancashire's Finest Training Rooms Age: 41 Current Push: Main Eventer 1997 Record: 10-2-10 / Avg Match Rating: C- Finishers: Half Nelson Suplex, Swinging Full Nelson Theme Song: Traditional – Jerusalem Other Achievements: Became PPPW Booker The notable thing about the least-decorated veteran in wrestling this year is his win/loss record; at 50-50, he's had the worst ratio since 1976, which marked his third year in the sport. Planning to retire from active competition by the millennium, Dangerous has said the only way he won't is if PPPW still needs him in the ring at that point – and the cadre of young main event and upper midcard talent he's assembled marks him for a likely transition, probably to a managerial role. This year has mostly been notable for Dangerous in that his hires and booking have turned the company around; bell to bell, it's been business as usual, coaxing the very best match that he can from his opponents. Daniel Harry Darlington will be looking forward to the time when he can truly rely on his sons to do the same thing – and we might see it by the end of 1998. I'd been looking forward to a Cornell/Dangerous feud following December's main events, but it doesn't look like it's on the cards.

Jack Giedroyc From: Newcastle, England Billed From: Newcastle, England Age: 21 Current Push: Enhancement Talent 1997 Record: 1-0-5 / Avg Match Rating: E+ Finishers: Crashing On (Leaping Jawbreaker) Theme Song: Babylon Zoo – Is Your Soul For Sale Other Achievements: Graduated the No Name Wrestling Clinic Giedroyc is a new arrival on the wrestling scene, and seems talented enough for a new arrival. It's difficult to say, however, as he's had little enough to do in the US thus far; fortunately BBW have given him a sizable amount of work, and from what I hear he's improving solidly. I expect Giedroyc to receive a solid push by the end of 1998, probably in concert with Dangerous' older son. The rivalry there, in storyline, writes itself. Jake Harvey From: Allentown, Pennsylvania Billed From: Allentown, Pennsylvania Age: 19 Current Push: Opener 1997 Record: 0-0-7 / Avg Match Rating: D- Finishers: None Known Theme Song: Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Other Achievements: A worse win-loss record than Dead Bolt, but at the same time this is a W/L that inspires some hope; unlike Bolt, Harvey is getting fairly regular work – and being better received as he does so. Showing sparks of character during the early Cahill's Corner era, Harvey has become connected with Cahill, suffering two of his losses to the Man Mountain to great sympathy. I don't expect Harvey to shine any time soon, but I think between Dangerous, McKing and Barber he'll receive all the polish he can get. JD Morgan From: Portsmouth, England Billed From: London, England Age: 29 Current Push: Upper Midcarder 1997 Record: 8-0-5 / Avg Match Rating: C- Finishers: Cross Atlantic Stretch (Crossface armbreaker) Theme Song: C0ckney Rebels – Oi Oi Oi Other Achievements: Since jumping from DaVE at the halfway point of the year, Morgan's been a major player in PPPW, allied with Cornell and Dangerous, reaching the final of the inaugural Pride of Philadelphia tournament, and losing chiefly to only the leading lights of the promotion. Currently serving as the British Invasion's representative in the Hype's long-running feud against the faction, Morgan has given the youngster his first real signs of trouble, employing all manner of dirty tricks against him and his ally Tom Gilmore. I predict Morgan will be firmly entrenched among the biggest names of the promotion by the end of 1998 – and making DaVE all the sorrier they gave him cause to jump. John Maverick From: Calgary, Canada Billed From: Calgary, Canada Age: 22 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 4-0-3 / Avg Match Rating: D- Finishers: Deadly Silence (DDT into a guillotine choke) Theme Song: Manic Street Preachers – Gold Against the Soul Other Achievements: Derailed somewhat by the abrupt departure of Jimmy Cox to PGHW, Maverick's position might be stronger if that hadn't happened; Barber and Dangerous were keen for that feud to run out substantially longer, and while Maverick ended up the victor in the end where he otherwise wouldn't have, both men were expected to rise on the basis of the feud. Since then, John's been treading water slightly as they try to find a new direction. With the expansion of Gold Guarantees at Winter War, I'm expecting some form of tag combination will emerge – and they're likely to be strong candidates for a push. John McClean From: Medicine Hat, Canada Billed From: Winnipeg, Canada Age: 23 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 4-0-5 / Avg Match Rating: D Finishers: Clean Out (Rolling single leg crab), Stain Removal (Tiger Driver) Theme Song: Bad Religion - Infected Other Achievements: Current PPPW Tag Team Champion McClean's been almost treading water this year – which is strange, for someone who's been embroiled for months in one of the hotter feuds in PPPW, but he's come out on the losing side regularly (and unsurprisingly, given Gilmore's momentum). His heartfelt promo at Old School Rock has a number of fans wondering if we'll see the CGC talent turn face on a sympathy vote in the future; either way, it's likely that he'll be dropping the PPPW tag strap in the near future to move on to whatever he ends up doing. Kit Hatoyama From: Kyoto, Japan Billed From: Kyoto, Japan Age: 25 Current Push: Manager 1997 Record: N/A / Avg Match Rating: N/A Finishers: Hatoyama Driver (Michinoku Driver II) Theme Song: ZZ Top - Legs Other Achievements: Kit Hatoyama came into PPPW as Yosuke Narita's valet and stuck around, apparently wowed by Tom Gilmore's antics. The best part of that thus far – other than Gilmore's offhand 'shibari' comment – has been the sequence where Kit and Gilmore conspired to horrendously embarrass Pistol Pete Hall, but as yet I'm uncertain where they're going with this. Gilmore doesn't need a manager to speak for him, and Kit's not in a position to do that yet anyway. Her record last year with both 5SSW and the Stones was solid, putting in a lot of time on very entertaining matches; frankly, she's wasted here. Krusher Karloff From: Edison, New Jersey Billed From: Tunguska, Siberia Age: 27 Current Push: Main Eventer 1997 Record: 2-0-7 / Avg Match Rating: D Finishers: Horror Hammer (discus Polish hammer) Theme Song: Sisters of Mercy – Mother Russia Other Achievements: The Sickle Scourge has not had a good year, all in all. Still nominally top gun in the Gold Guarantees, the real-life Billy Jack Shearer has seen himself vanish from title contention and been on the receiving end of some painful defeats, despite the aid of Floyd Goldworthy. We may see a retooling of the character to bring it more up to date sometime in 1998, but they said that in 1997... and in 1995... Man Mountain Cahill From: Paterson, New Jersey Billed From: None Of Your Business Age: 26 Current Push: Upper Midcarder 1997 Record: 5-0-1 / Avg Match Rating: D Finishers: Cahill Crunch (Combination chokeslam/elbow drop) Theme Song: Ronnie Cahill – Bluegrass Blues Other Achievements: A shock career resurgence for the young monster under Dangerous' inventive book, Ronnie's featured on every show despite working only six matches. As such, his negatives have been masked almost to the point of invisibility, leaving him able to roll on the appearance of near-invulnerability and an indisputably vicious-looking array of basic strikes and throws. While I don't think he's going to get anywhere near the title, Ronnie Cahill has been a major player in PPPW's 1997 and I don't see that changing any time soon. Mean Jean Cattley From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Billed From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 19 Current Push: Opener 1997 Record: 2-0-7 / Avg Match Rating: E+ Finishers: Mood Swing (Uranage) Theme Song: The Cure - Burn Other Achievements: Out of the young talents on the roster, Jean Cattley has received as much attention as anyone not named Dangerous. A hometown boy and a hit with the Goth community, he's paying his dues and doing his best to get over as it happens. His current manager, Scarah, was hired on his recommendation; word is that he met her at a local club and the pair have been seeing each other since. Gifted with good fundamentals, Cattley has a shot at rising up the card in a few years if he keeps his head down and learns. Nathan Coleman From: Tulsa, Oklahoma Billed From: Tulsa, Oklahoma Age: 26 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 4-0-4 / Avg Match Rating: D Finishers: Pioneer Twist (Powerslam into neckbreaker) Theme Song: ZZ Top – Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers Other Achievements: Coleman was brought in with the clear goal of giving Stuart Ferdinand a tag partner, a move which makes a lot of sense when you recall that both Dangerous and Barber are fond of tag wrestling and that the PPPW tag division, until recently, existed in only the most theoretical of senses. While substantially weaker than his ally, Coleman has settled into his role well and is showing signs of learning from the Burning Hammer man – which has prompted renewed interest in Coleman from Japan. With recent steps toward bringing the belts into circulation again, Coleman & Ferdinand have a chance to shine. Let's hope, for Stuart's sake, they take it... Instead, he showed us he hadn't lost a step, turning out solid to blistering performances in the USA and abroad – and, really, just look at the achievements section. Why PPPW? Because, it turns out, he was in the process of refurbishing property in Philadelphia. Pistol Pete's sports bar opened shortly after he returned to the ring full-time, and that may be the only thing that could keep him with the company for long – but the company's making the most of him while he's there. Until his final farewell to the ring, I think we'll see Nero's Strap Challenge return intermittently, but until then he'll be by the sides of his minions making people care and showing them how to make the crowd do exactly what you want them to.

Rich Money From: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Billed From: Wall Street, NYC Age: 22 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 6-0-6 / Avg Match Rating: D Finishers: Dollars from Heaven (Frog splash) Theme Song: Dire Straits – Money for Nothing Other Achievements: Current PPPW Maximum Champion In 1997 Rich Money worked for NEW, HGC, and PPPW. Everyone but Dangerous saw the wisdom in making him a heel from the off; Horatio Dangerous, however, took nearly eleven months to reach that conclusion. As a result, the primary prediction I have to make is that 1998 will be a better year for the talented Money, who's gone from being a McGuffin who occasionally gets in the ring to the heel he should be. Money's a talented talker, and I suspect he'll be backing Floyd up in promos regarding the Gold Guarantee – and probably won't be with the GG for too long, just there until he can cut loose fully. Look for Money to have a long run with the Maximum strap as Floyd and company recover. Richard Dangerous From: Seattle, Washington Billed From: Seattle, Washington Age: 19 Current Push: Lower Midcarder 1997 Record: 7-0-6 / Avg Match Rating: E+ Finishers: Dangerous Brainbuster (Cross-arm brainbuster) Theme Song: Hurricane #1 – Only The Strongest Will Survive Other Achievements: The younger Dangerous comes out of 1997 with a better win-loss percentage than his father, but only just. Still struggling to gain the overness he'll need to become a threat, Dangerous' skills can't be denied – and GCG is capitalising on them, if anything, more thoroughly than Richard's own father. By the end of 1998 I expect Richard to be positioned well, possibly helping his younger brother establish a foothold in the company and the wrestling world – and I halfway expect him to have reached the point where Japanese audiences no longer consider him a young lion, though that's only idle speculation. Rick Sanders From: Boston, Massachusetts Billed From: Boston, Massachusetts Age: 28 Current Push: Upper Midcarder 1997 Record: 7-0-7 / Avg Match Rating: D- Finishers: Figure-four leg lock Theme Song: Metallica – Nothing Else Matters Other Achievements: Former PPPW Maximum Champion Sanders wasn't doing well at the start of 1997, rapidly mired in a feud with Travis Century that went nowhere but which Sanders was, more or less, on the losing end of. Everything changed in September when Sanders beat John McClean to claim the vacant Maximum Championship; he held it tenaciously until Rich Money turned on him at the close of the year, but by then he'd established a winning streak that may yet return in 1998. The repackaged, all-intensity Sanders we've seen come in over the latter half of 1997 has legs as a character and may finally give him the fame he seeks. Sandy Townsley From: Toronto, Canada Billed From: Toronto, Canada Age: 20 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 0-0-3 / Avg Match Rating: D- Finishers: Sand Trap (Bow & Arrow Lock) Theme Song: Green Day – Nice Guys Finish Last Other Achievements: Sandy Townsley is a bit of an enigma, as far as his PPPW career goes. He's been booked less often than Dead Bolt and with the same level of success, yet he's actually found himself higher placed in the expanded roster – and he's certainly done better in his matches than Bolt. On the face of it, one might assume that Townsley isn't going to be around much longer. On the other hand, his ties with John McClean and Troy Tornado backstage might protect him – and his regular appearances with NOTBPW have seen him show improvement. It's difficult to judge what Dangerous and Barber think of all this – 1998 is likely to be the year that tips the scales, but don't hold your breath. Scarah From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Billed From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 25 Current Push: Manager 1997 Record: N/A / Avg Match Rating: N/A Finishers: N/A Theme Song: The Cure - Burn Other Achievements: There's precious little to say here; Scarah has yet to distinguish herself other than by her impressively varied collection of corsets. She appears to have got the job on her looks, which are now outclassed by Kit, Emma and Wanda. It's anyone's guess how long she'll last; perhaps, however, she'll start to catch on soon. Eye candy is common in wrestling, but when it's all you have, you'd best be the best looking girl in town. Stuart Ferdinand From: Lincoln, Nebraska Billed From: Lincoln, Nebraska Age: 33 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 8-0-3 / Avg Match Rating: D- Finishers: Butterfly Lock Theme Song: ZZ Top – Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers Other Achievements: Hinote Dojo Best of December Trophy winner There are few workers who wrestle as often as Stuart Ferdinand. While his PPPW career has been perhaps the weakest of his various contracts over 1997, that looks set to change as we move into 1998; Ferdinand is probably the most talented of the men who we know to be in the tag division thus far, and Dangerous is known to respect talent and pay it the dues it deserves. I'm not sure I'd guarantee Coleman & Ferdinand will have gold by the end of 1998, but a good mouthpiece attached to them could come close to guaranteeing it – save that Ferdinand might well be tempted by a written contract in Japan... The Hype From: Sioux City, Iowa Billed From: Los Angeles, California Age: 24 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 7-0-6 / Avg Match Rating: E+ Finishers: Aitch-Bomb (Quick Lift Powerbomb), Flying knee strike Theme Song: Twisted Sister – We're Not Gonna Take It Other Achievements: Todd Cusson has found himself oddly stalled – while he's doing well, his HGC losses have kept him from being able to win the PPPW crowd to his side as quickly as he'd have hoped, and the rumour is that frustration at six incidents requiring discipline inside a year has taken its toll on Dangerous and Barber, too. Nonetheless, the Hype is a talented worker with youth on his side; we're looking at someone who is sure to hold gold of one flavour or another, and if he can just overcome his negatives, I can see this man becoming Tri-State champion in the not too distant future. Cusson needs to be smart; he has it all to lose. The Natural From: Richmond, Virginia Billed From: Montreal, Canada Age: 26 Current Push: Lower Midcarder 1997 Record: 4-0-7 / Avg Match Rating: D Finishers: Nature Calls (Inverted atomic drop into a sit-out slam) Theme Song: Cinderella – Nobody's Fool Other Achievements: Current 4C Tag Champion He's been one of the lower-ranked of PPPW's Canadian imports throughout, but his 1997 resume also boasts a Tri-State title shot against Tommy Cornell (not coincidentally, his best match in the States). It's a safe bet that Barber's boys have plans for the Natural, but they're playing a slow burn to develop him in the area – which is probably the smart play. I'm expecting more matches or an improved W/L ratio through 1998. The Punisher From: Boise, Idaho Billed From: Idaho Falls Age: 31 Current Push: Midcarder 1997 Record: 1-0-7 / Avg Match Rating: E+ Finishers: Piledriver Theme Song: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Stagger Lee Other Achievements: Current PPPW Tag Team Champion The Punisher... is not likely, I don't think, to see out 1998 still employed by PPPW. He's lost almost exclusively and produced weak matches as he's done so. Unless he can stage a quite remarkable turnaround in the near future, I can't say I expect his time with PPPW to continue long. It's a shame, as he's been a dedicated worker and I doubt he'll find further employment. Highly skilled on the microphone, the smart money has him entering fully into a feud with Travis Century in the near future and probably attempting to tune up Century's skills in the ring as he does so. On promos alone, that should be one to watch coming into 1998. Tom Gilmore From: Regina, Canada Billed From: Regina, Canada Age: 19 Current Push: Main Eventer 1997 Record: 6-0-3 / Avg Match Rating: D+ Finishers: Unnamed twisting flapjack Theme Song: Faithless - Insomnia Other Achievements: Last AMW World Heavyweight Champion, Former PPPW Maximum Champion, tew.com Power 100 #41 Good grief, has it only been nine matches? Gilmore feels like he's been a constant presence, feuding with McClean, mentoring Richard Dangerous, aiding the Hype and hooking up with Kit Hatoyama. He even found time to fit in a title shot against Tommy Cornell – and this despite coming in late and spending two months out with a broken ankle. Gilmore's future looks insanely bright – with the McClean feud apparently scheduled to end before February, he's going to be one of those in line for a shot at the top prize, the coveted Tri-State championship. My money's on Gilmore missing out on that but picking up the Pride of Philadelphia trophy next time around, having missed this year's tournament through injury. Why HGC cut him loose last month I honestly couldn't tell you. Tommy Cornell From: Wigan, England Billed From: Manchester, England Age: 19 Current Push: Main Eventer 1997 Record: 12-0-4 / Avg Match Rating: C+ Finishers: Rough Ride (inverted suplex into stunner), Guilt Trip (grapevine crossface chickenwing) Theme Song: Judas Priest – Breakin' The Law Other Achievements: Former PPPW Tri-State Champion Easily the biggest acquisition PPPW made in 1997, Cornell spent the remainder of the year making a statement to SWF with his performances, showing his true potential as a do-or-die heel. His championship reign was the best PPPW has seen to date in terms of both quality, storylines, and the strength he allowed his opponents to show, in particular Brent Hill. That's why it's a crying shame to write that I don't see him having a future in PPPW. Tommy Cornell has become the second PPPW man to accept a written contract from Japan – and I have to say, I'm really looking forward to his time with Burning Hammer. But as a fan of PPPW, I have to say – I'm sad about this. As yet it's uncertain whether Tommy will have one last show to wrap up the angles they were running. While his work with Sanders meandered slightly, Whistler's ability to answer back coupled with the additions of Professor Nero, Jack Marlowe and Troy Tornado kept this one ticking over and allowed the program to help both men. Century's ring work has never been equal to his ability on the microphone, but he retains enough talent to prevent the matches from trashing the feuds, and his skill at working a crowd makes the 'Dark Preacher' a useful talent. Dangerous seems high on the possibilities in Century's character; don't expect to see much less of him. Prone to sequences involving explosive bursts of power, Troy's cemented a hold on the minds of the fans mostly through outside-match shenanigans so far, but the Disciples of Evil enforcer looks set to become a solid presence sooner rather than later – I expect a string of wins and a solid push as we enter 1998. Barely allowed to speak, seldom intervening – and when she does, rarely in a way which involves skill – Wanda's been attached to a group of Brits by dint of having been aligned to Cornell at the start. With his departure, I'm not sure what's going to happen. She'll likely stick with JD Morgan, but what's coming up I'm honestly not sure of. At least it's a paycheck for someone who deserves them. Whistler From: Shawnee, Kansas Billed From: One of Philly's Own Age: 36 Current Push: Main Eventer 1997 Record: 12-3-4 / Avg Match Rating: D+ Finishers: Rebel Yell (Charging Uppercut) Theme Song: Neil Young – Rockin' in the Free World Other Achievements: You can't keep Whistler down, it seems. There will likely be some work done in 1998 to pull Whistler back out of the main event scene to let Philly's Own focus on tag competition, but Whistler himself just keeps rising back to near the peak of what many still see as his promotion. Despite being shunted out of the Tri-State title picture, this has been a pretty good year for Whistler, notably through a solid feud with Travis Century that closed 1997 out by bringing both men to new heights. The question is, where does he go from here?

Long time reader her, but I admit I do not comment very often. You're doing a great job Phantom with this diary, it's very entertaining and has a nice old-school touch that really fits Philly Pro. I especially like the SWF 24/7 segments, they are a intelligent way of giving us hindsights about the ins and outs of your decisions. Wrestler of the Year : Tommy Cornell Since day one, Cornell stepped in and carried the promotion. Every night, he delievers quality matches while being in the central storyline. Pistol Pete is good, but it's already showing that he can't deliver quality main events unless put against the right opponents unlike Cornell. Feud of the Year : Century vs Whistler I really like that one, a sleeper in the undercard in my opinion. Good intensity from both men, believable animosity and it took a new turned when Nero came in. Debut of the Year : Tommy Cornell Like I said above, since day one, Cornell is the man to beat in Philly.

Wrestler of the Year Tommy Cornell To be totally honest, my personal favourite of the year was Whistler-his feuds were always the ones I cared about the most. But Tommy's done an excellent job as the top name in the company, and whilst I'm not a huge fan of the British Invasion Tommy himself is an excellent character --- Feud of the Year Travis Century vs. Whistler AND Professor Nero vs. Pistol Pete Hall I just couldn't separate these two feuds out, not just because they kind of overlap (isn't Travis an ally of Nero's?). Both had the kind of old-school rough-housing I look for from PPPW. Plus, outside of McClean/Gilmore there wasn't a great deal of competition- Century/Sanders kind of passed me by, and Karloff/Hall and Cox/Maverick weren't anything special. As for Hype/Invasion, it had the Hype in. I hate the Hype. --- Debut of the Year Tommy Cornell Closest field so far- Bach was a major contender for this, but lost out due to being Sammy Bach (I'm just waiting for Teddy Powell to show up until I really get into him, tbh). Cornell's debut could be this continuity's version of the Nemesis thing.

Wrestler of the Year - Brent Hill No Whistler nomination? I guess he has dropped somewhat on the card, but he's been in the feud of the year in my opinion. But in my mind Brent Hill is number one anyways and with him winning the Pride of Philadelphia Trophy, that gives him a leg up on Tommy and the others. Feud of the Year - Travis Century vs. Whistler As I said, I love this feud and I'm pretty sure it's not even because of my Whistler bias. I think it's been the most creative one in the dynasty. Debut of the Year - Tommy Cornell Tommy has been a force since he entered the picture, and it's a lot of fun to see Tommy played in a different way, 10 years before his world title runs and TCW ownership. And now for predictions... Coleman & Ferdinand vs. The Natural & Richard Dangerous PPPW Tag Championship John McClean & The Punisher (c) vs. Philly's Own 'Boy Wonder' Sammy Bach vs. Deano Machino PPPW Maximum Championship Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Eddie Chandler Brent Hill vs. John Maverick w/ Floyd Goldworthy PPPW Tri-State Championship THREE-MAN ELIMINATION Pistol Pete Hall (c) vs. Horatio Dangerous w/ Jack Giedroyc vs. Tommy Cornell w/ Wanda Fish
