Philly Power Pro Wrestling: Dangerous Dreams [C-Verse '97]
I'm definitely taking notes on how you as well as guys like James Casey and Tiger Kinney are going from Regional to Cult. In all the games I've played I had never been able to take a Regional power to Cult. I was able to try with my NYCW 97 game, but I accidentally deleted all my notes for the Summer of 1997, which derailed that diary.
If you want to do it safely, be sure to allow it to take a while, I'd be going slower than I am for it if it weren't for the Owner Goal; New England is perched on a high D-, which will push over to D probably before too long. OTOH, the D+ rated shows won't be doing much to make that happen, but they're bolstering me everywhere else. I want to be making substantially more money than I have been before I get there - in order to do that I want to have a good wide support base. TV seems to be absolutely the strongest way to achieve that now - but each negotiation is tricky. Beware, though; TV popularity will push you into more regional battles than you were in. I won all but one in March; the new territory I was facing them in, though, the North West, I came third out of a field of three. So it's a weird balance...

Following the boat, our view naturally arrives at Chris Rockwell, who leans out over a crowd barrier watching the vehicle go. Wearing a heavily-sponsored suit appropriate for hydroplaning, his wrists are nonetheless taped for wrestling. He continues to watch the boats as he talks. “I remember the last time I cheated,” he begins. “Back in high school I did a lot of sports and sometimes they used to threaten me with kicking me off the teams. The whole Hollywood thing, do your schoolwork or you don't get a chance to be Chris Rockwell. Worked about as well on me as it did the movies. “So come the big test I cheated. I broke into Mr Irvine's office after school and went through his desk looking for the test. I found it, memorised it, worked out the answers. “That year I made the nationals. The biggest stage of my life to that point. A chance to show the world not only that I had what it takes to be Chris Rockwell – a chance to show the world just what it means to be Chris Rockwell. “This isn't some story where I got caught and saw the error of my ways. It's not me claiming to be better than Pete Hall because I wouldn't pull that crap. I cheated. I got away with it. And it launched a whole bunch of things for me. “The point of the story is simpler. The point of the story is this – I can understand why he did what he did. It's tough to be at the top. “Pete, I'm not busy tonight. Matter of fact,” he nods into the bay, “I came along to the show mostly to get into one of those. And can you blame me?” A grin, quickly swallowed as he grows serious again. “But I intend to be busy in the future. I intend to take your title, and I intend to take it fairly. Not because I'm angry that you cheated. Not because the honor of the title needs restoring. Both of those are true, and both of those are not the point. To be Chris Rockwell, Pete, you have to prove yourself every time. When you took that cheap shot on Saturday, you took the chance to prove myself away. That wasn't wise.” vs. w/ Brent Hill vs. Troy Tornado w/ Professor Nero It's not a brilliantly-received contest – Tornado is still virtually unknown here, and even the great hero of the indies that is Brent Hill has little traction, though growing from his recent association, just across the border, with the Stones. As such, while Hill is noted for drawing greater audience reaction than anyone else from any given opponent, the crowd still don't get behind this as they might in Philadelphia. Troy and Brent work a slightly more airborne match than most of Philly Pro's fans are comfortable with, but also work in the power sequences – despite Troy's small stature – and mat wrestling the fans like. In the end, Troy's top-rope legdrop misses and Brent capitalises with a quick cover. Brent Hill defeated Troy Tornado Rating: D- The big screen – and the TV feed – go backstage. Nero and Tornado, returning backstage, run into Travis Century, who's stood next to Rich Money. Money, leaning on the wall, nods to Nero. “You boys want to step this way? I can make it worth your while.” Nero and Century exchange a long look as Tornado squares himself up, facing the Maximum Champion; sensing this, Professor Nero raises a hand, and Troy subsides. “You will,” he says confidently. Money nods again and opens a door, leading the group through into the Gold Guarantees dressing room; Karloff has taped a full-size poster of Whistler to a locker door and is punching it steadily, denting the metal, not stopping or even slowing as he fires off jabs. Maverick is nowhere to be seen. Floyd Goldworthy lights a cigarette and offers the pack across; Nero and Century shake their heads in refusal. Tornado takes one and pockets it, a mannerism reminiscent of a convict who knows he'll be trading it later. “Gentlemen,” Goldworthy begins. “I've been considering this issue with the tag championships. I think I have a solution.” “Go ahead,” Century says quietly. “The New Wave,” Goldworthy nods. “Your men defeated them last week, yes?” He smiles. “If we can do so in less time next week, you'll step aside until we're done. If we can't-” “Or you lose,” Nero says, his tone deliberately antagonistic. Goldworthy frowns, Karloff's locker door comes loose off his next punch, and Money snorts in amusement. Floyd seems to take that as a cue, and continues. “Or we lose,” he begins, “we'll step aside until you've had your shot.” Nero glances back toward Century, and to Tornado. Century smiles. “I think we can accept that, Mycroft.” The Professor nods, and Tornado plucks the packet of cigarettes from Goldworthy's hand as the Disciples file out. Rich Money buckles his Maximum Championship belt around his waist and makes to follow them, pausing to look at the destroyed image of Whistler. “I'm looking forward to that,” he smiles, then steps out. “Cannot abide hypocrites...” PPPW Maximum Championship w/ vs. Rich Money © w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Rick Sanders Showboating heel against no-nonsense face is a story as old as professional wrestling, and this is not the best nor the worst executed. Money lacks a degree of his customary heat as the people who know him best here know him as a regular loser on HGC; however, he rapidly gets heat with them following a simple offer of ten dollars to Sanders, clearly intended to make him throw the match. Sanders shows a little fire by paintbrushing Money with a brutal slap, and the fight's on; and Sanders, by and large, has the best of it, but he makes a key mistake, going for a baseball slide to prevent Goldworthy interfering. Money catches him from behind on the outside and slams his head into the ringpost and the ringsteps before driving his back into the side of the ring itself repeatedly; another headshot to the ringpost later he rolls the dazed and bleeding Sanders back into the ring, scrambles to the top rope, and hits the Dollars from Heaven. The win is academic. Rich Money defeated Rick Sanders Rating: D Backstage again, this time with Man Mountain Cahill and Emma Chase. “Haven't seen Herb around today,” she begins. Cahill, intent on a Harley-Davidson catalogue, shrugs. “He busy somewhere else, do you think?” she smiles. “Or has he already given up the ghost?” Cahill shrugs again, circling a particular custom job with a pen. “Shame,” she says thoughtfully. “I was sort of looking forward to the inevitable confrontation...” Cage Match vs. Demon Anger vs. Whistler Tom Gilmore's out to help on the announce desk with this contest, taking a very pro-Philly Pro tack on commentary and running Anger down at every opportunity. The contest itself isn't a great one, though both men inflict a remarkable amount of pain on the other; but from early on, the outcome is rarely in doubt, with Whistler behind the eight ball from the start and really making his mark through endurance more than anything else. A Demon Slam that begins by smashing Whistler, upside-down and face-first, into the cage wall before the follow-through puts him out is how the contest ends, scant seconds before the time limit would elapse. Demon Anger defeated Whistler Rating: D+ For an area where Philly Pro isn't very established the crowd reaction was solid throughout, and the cage match on free TV helped grab attention nationwide. Show Rating: D+

Not like here -” a gesture encompasses the 'backstage' area USPW use on TV “where I'm basically playing a nostalgia act, where the scares are part of the fun. Straight Demon didn't quite work while we were still the big invaders. “So it's a question – this is what got you to the big time. How far can you modify it without stopping it working?” He shrugs. “I was suddenly the big attraction somewhere. That was good. But it got awkward. “Tag wrestling, it's not like singles work. And it was ages since I'd done much one-on-one, not since DaVE. But you do things differently, you tell a different story. “I was lucky. Dangerous covered for me. Him and the Professor put the matches together so I didn't have to do too much, just my big favourites.” A grin. “I got to ease back into it, you know? Just this big scary guy, nice and easy. “But there was this one problem. We had so many big scary guys. I spent more time not doing what Karloff was doing, not doing what Ronnie was doing...” He shrugs. “You don't want to just blend together, you know? “I always figured he did it to remind us that we were basically interchangeable. Keeps you from getting ****y. “Wrestling's a big man's game. Everyone says it. But unless you're a Dread or a Pete Hall, someone like that, if you're a big man you're just another fish in the pool. “What you want to be is the guy who goes through big men. A Sam Strong or an Optimus. They get defined, we spend our time trying not to be faceless.” He shrugs. “No one really seems to want to admit it. But I've been around.” -- Phil Vibert shakes his head. “He was the same when we brought him in,” he says. “Look back at his career now. He's had, what, eight tag titles? Couple of singles championships? “Anger is really good at what he does. Thing is, what he does isn't a headline act for the big companies. So he feels like crap a lot of the time because he never quite hit the top. “Look at the ratings the Demons/LoW feud did for USPW last year. Biggest ratings that company's had outside of a Sam Strong match.” He smiles. “That was Anger. That was Spite. That was Pain and Agony. “None of them were ever the biggest guys around. But years past their prime those four men showed they still had everything it takes to make fans. “I don't like USPW. I've gone on record about that enough times. But the fact remains that it works. And it works because it's not just the Sam Strongs that people remember. “Sometimes you just have to be happy with who you are.”
I really like the way you portray Chris Rockwell. I wasn't high on him at first, but now his persona is really growing and he looks like a legit contender.
Heh... Oddly enough, that last promo is the one where his voice shifted from 'good wrestler with a catchphrase' to a full promo style. I think I've figured out why he's anchored himself to that particular line, what it means to the character, and how he uses it to power a promo now. We'll see whether it lasts, of course, but the last one actually felt from this end like a breakthrough.

McClean claws some momentum back despite his recent losing efforts in tag by comprehensively schooling Cattley in what's actually a pretty good technical showcase, hindered mostly by the fact Cattley's been on the losing end too much to present a credible threat. The Stain Removal hits six minutes in. Nero stops and glances back at the camera. “Ah... would you mind?” he asks, gesturing with his cane. “I tolerate your presence here, but there are some things that should be kept private.” As he closes the door between the camera and the scene, his voice can be heard. “Just a few words of advice, gentlemen, have no fear...” PPPW Maximum Championship w/ vs. w/ Rich Money © w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama Kit makes it very clear from the off that her goal here is to prevent Goldworthy from interfering and the intensity she brings to that is remarkable, adding something to the match as the managers improvise something entertaining whenever Gilmore and Money's all-out speed necessitates a breather. It looks, as the match goes on, like Gilmore has a minor edge on Rich Money here, edging him out on a number of occasions. At the end he lands the World Shatters... Kit, meanwhile, has got hold of a chair and is stalking through the ring toward Thatcher when someone else emerges from the crowd, cutting her off with a stiff right hand, dropping the chair to the floor. As Kit lies on the steel, Helen Bach – as Action Jackson recognises on commentary – hits the ropes and rebounds into a diving headbutt, sandwiching Kit's head between her skull and the chair. Gilmore rolls into the ring to drive her away; as she and Charlie Thatcher retreat, Thatcher raises her arm as if she'd just won a match. Gilmore stares daggers over a bleeding Kit. Tornado promptly dives on him as Goldworthy rolls into the ring, engaging in a tug-of-war with Nero for his cane as the two tag teams slug it out in the centre of the ring. The announce desk and locker room eventually bail into the ring to put a stop to this one, but in terms of Goldworthy/Nero, nothing's been settled. Giedroyc is a constant presence ringside, dispensing advice and cheerleading, but this is probably the cleanest match Dangerous has wrestled in months; it seems, and both announcers remark on it, that he wants to prove something. Hill nonetheless has the upper hand all match and Dangerous is hard-pressed to keep up, but nothing works forever; a Complete Package attempt is blocked toward the end and Dangerous scrambles a roll-up before Brent can prepare for it, picking up a shock win despite the match and talent seeming against him. Horatio Dangerous defeated Brent Hill Rating: C- For Philly, this wasn't an exceptional show, but nonetheless the main market took to it without the core constituency being harmed. A solid angle-advancement show with a well-received debut. Rating: D+

Mostly it was Mike Nero. But...” He glances out of shot, and thinks. “Well, you can ask him for the rest in a bit.” Through the open double doors, Mayhem Midden shows an assembled class a powerbomb on Cheetah Boy. “What I remember is, having decided to do a tag division, Horatio made the decision to use it as a training ground...” -- Dangerous smiles. “We had one properly established team when I got there, and half of it had turned face since. The other half had the title belts. “I never did get to the bottom of how that made sense. Building a tag division meant building from scratch, and I wanted to use it to establish useful pairs. Look at Stuey and Nathan; Stuey's skills did wonders for Nathan over the years. But the real example was Whistler and Jack – Jack brought it in the ring and couldn't talk; Whistler could talk a whole crowd into their seats and was willing to learn from anyone. The two of them did wonders for each other. “My original plan was to use Whistler's issues with Travis to fuel the tag division for a while, and I wanted to pair Travis with Mike. After a while it became clear that Mike couldn't quite be relied on in the ring anymore, not to the level I'd hoped. But he knew that himself, and he had ideas.” -- “I knew I was there in part to give Travis a couple of lessons on the microphone,” the Professor begins, “and a couple in the ring. But I wasn't happy with my performances when I was asked to get in the ring. “This was all before I was officially teamed with Travis. And the result was, it didn't end up happening. I talked to Harry for a while... I'm not sure how, but a character evolved. A tough, silent type to hang around with both of us. Someone who could carry Travis in matches while he and I buckled down to getting them both over on the stick. A remarkable look, ideally. “We started looking for someone then. I remember my first choice was actually Charlie Thatcher; what he was asking for was too much for Harry. Tommy Cornell was a huge chunk of the payroll then, and we couldn't afford a big name. “He, Barber and me, we started looking through a lot of indy tapes, just looking for someone who could go well enough and showed promise and drive. There were a lot of choices, but the one who was willing to sign up was Troy.” -- “Troy came with issues,” Barber sighs. “He was working for XFW, so we got straight into an argument with Randall over him. XFW were using him the same way Coastal Zone and Hollyweird were, though, which is a fancy way of saying he was losing everywhere. “Wasn't much use to Randall so it could have been worse. But that was... I thought that was a problem. Troy's losing on TV, he's losing on both coasts... how do you get around that?” -- The Professor grins. “You give him something that he doesn't have anywhere else,” he says. “Troy was this clean-cut All-American wrestling in a star-spangled singlet. It was hopelessly outdated and not yet back in fashion. Notice when he actually climbed up to the top of the Zone? October 2001. Suddenly that gimmick was back in style... Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself. “We repackaged him. Punked him up, gave him the eye makeup – that was Travis' idea – and made him this hard-hitting, near-unstoppable bastard. All very basic. And how did we explain this? In Philly Pro, he was under my malign influence. Of course he was willing to push the envelope with my backing where he wasn't anywhere else. “So he can start winning all of a sudden and no one minds, and we have our enforcer. “I spent a lot of time talking to him about how he could lay hints he was going to outgrow us – I knew that by the end, I'd be looking at a new group of Disciples and hopefully Troy and Travis both would be able to do their own thing. But that has to look natural. “We did a lot, because we weren't sure what was coming...”

A little on edge, Dangerous pulls up short as he sees how Hill's waiting. “Good match last week,” Dangerous offers. Hill regards him stonily for a moment. “You want something,” he says at last. Dangerous half-smiles. “No,” he says. “I just wanted to say – good match. Give you a rematch some time?” “I'm busy,” Hill returns. “Wouldn't mind evening the score. But it'll have to wait.” “Yeah,” Horatio nods. “Thanks, though.” He holds out a hand. Hill looks at him for a long time, then takes a slow glance back over his shoulder, checking for ambush. At length he reaches out and gives the hand a quick grasp. Collecting his bag again, he pauses. “Where've you and Morgan been hiding, anyway? Coming in fulla balls, you've just vanished.” Horatio's disconcerted for a moment, but recovers a smile. “We'll be back.” “I'll watch mine, then,” Hill deadpans before walking away. Dangerous nods to himself before walking off, apparently satisfied. Behind him, Wanda Fish stands revealed, having watched the whole thing. She swigs briefly from her own water bottle... Arsenal makes his winning streak a full four matches since his return here, putting the New Waver's technical expertise to shame as he turns up the gears against him. It's simple outmatching that puts Scout away, but not before the younger man manages to score a few decent holds and show the crowd that he has something. Human Arsenal defeated Scout Rating: D+ The Boy Wonder emerges to the background of his signature Ramones track, microphone in hand. He gets almost all the way down to the ring before being cut off by Their Law as Charlie Thatcher emerges, Helen Bach strutting behind. “Charlie's got something to say,” Helen informs Sammy. “I told him my kid brother had some time booked that he'd be happy to donate. Ain't that right?” She smiles sweetly, and Sammy frowns. “This is my time,” he says. “I had a point to make. I had a challenge to issue. I-” Charlie snatches the microphone away, grinning at him. “Tough,” he says. “Unless you reckon he can take me?” Sammy glowers back. “Depends,” he says. “Is my sister gonna help you?” Helen grins. “You know I got your back, bro,” she smirks. “But not here.” Sammy lunges for the microphone, and Thatcher cuts him off with a headbutt that sends Sammy backing up three or four steps; all the room he needs for the running big boot that takes Sammy down. “That's enough,” Helen grins. “I'll keep him outta your way.” Sammy's already on his way back to his feet, and Thatcher climbs into the ring as Helen moves to restrain her brother. “I'll come straight to the point,” he begins. “Gilmore got himself a girl. I got me a woman. Now Tommy boy, I hear your girl fancies herself quite the wrassler. In Japan anyway. Helen here, she's better than her brother-” Sammy has by this time twisted free of a hammerlock and ducked into the ring; Thatcher meets him with a mic-assisted right hand and a couple of boots to the head. “So I guess I win there too, right? “Point is, what's saved your bacon is your backup. Now I got it scouted, sooner or later I'm gonna take your name and break your bones. You can make this easy on yourself. Just give up and all I'll do is crack a leg. But put up a fight and kiss goodbye to your- goddamn, boy, don't you know when to stay down?” This last to Sammy Bach, who has once again fought his way to his feet in the ring, still in the fight. Thatcher nearly decapitates him with a fast clothesline before scooping him onto a shoulder, sprinting the length of the ring, and lawn-darting him from inside the ring to the steel crowd barrier. Sammy hits hard and instantly curls into a ball, hands wrapped protesting around his head. The camera sweeps across Helen Bach, who's pointedly not looking at all this. “Be ready,” Thatcher resumes. “And kiss your girlfriend one last time. It's hard with a broken jaw.” The two leave as Sammy Bach is helped to the back by a sympathetic Marcus McKing. Both teams rapidly ignore the legal man rule and that steps up the pace significantly, but at no point does this rival the technical display of the first match. Still, it's hard-fought action that keeps the crowd interested even as Century's pronouncements stir even more ire from the fans (this time, his general theme is on patriotism and how it removes glory from God) but the stars of this one are Marlowe and Tornado and it's fitting that that's how the match ends, with Tornado's lariat keeping Marlowe down for a hair over three seconds. The title changes hands! His former manager's stabbing finger dominates the scene for a moment, accusing. “I promised you a title when I brought you in here, and I delivered. Last year was kinda quiet, sure, but I deliver what I promise. “You walked off on that, Ronnie, you got lured away. I promise you, son, by the time I'm done you'll see what I can do for you. I guarantee you she won't do so much.” He snorts. “If she even cares about you now she's got you. “Our contract doesn't run out for some time, Ronnie. There's time for you to see the light. I've got a client in the next match – and I'll take him to the top. It could have been you. “I'll show you. Believe me.” He storms off again, Cahill shrugs, and goes back to his motorcycle. Try as they might throughout this, no one stays down and no one taps out – the time limit is waiting fifteen minutes in. As Fair separates the sides, Rockwell and Hall stare each other down to end the show. Chris Rockwell & Brent Hill drew with Pistol Pete Hall & Joel Bryant Rating: C A surprisingly weak reception followed this show after the main event; nonetheless, Philly Pro was better off for having broadcast it. Which was kind of cool. “The plan as I understood it was to bring me in as the terror of the women, hitting hard from the start. Dangerous agreed, I think, with Heidi's philosophy that a woman's got to do something twice as harsh as the guys to get their attention at the start. And Kit was a looker, so we put the whole thing with me going after her face together. “I think it worked. We definitely didn't hurt Charlie's momentum, or Tom's, which was the main thing at that point. “I figured it was going to be a fun couple years. My oldest was three at the time, and I felt I could get one last run in before I had to settle down and play sensible mom. A lot of the look I put together came from that – one last fling with the idea. “I remember it as being fun, really. Charlie was playing this complete nutball who just went crazy on people, so I got to be pretty close to that. And the whole dynamic with Sammy was fun.” She laughs. “I probably put his career back three years doing it, but he never complained. Maybe he was just too green back then to realise. I dunno... “It was nice, you know? I was just playing the standard heavy for Trip-A and the CWL, but there was time in Philly Pro to play with that idea, maybe just 'cause I got hitched to a big storyline early on. I know Scarah was kind of pissy about not being used, but to be honest, what could you do with her? “She could barely talk worth a damn, she wouldn't bump – I remember one squash I wanted to do something with her at ringside just to get a bit more heat on us and give Jean a bit more shine. By that time they were engaged, he brought her into the business, and I'd have been happy just to throw one hand if she'd drop. It was safe, y'know? “But she wouldn't. I knew right then their marriage wasn't gonna last. “I liked the other girls, though. I knew Wanda already, worked with her a few times though both of us spent so much time heel we pretty much never wrestled each other. She was fine with any spots we did, but you expect that. “Kit... Kit was a blast. I always wished she'd had more time to spend in town after each show, but her life's an ocean away, what're you gonna do? But a bigger party girl you'll never see. And the meanest, sneakiest, sense of humour... her one-liners always broke me. “Emma, I didn't like much when I came in. I don't have much time for girls who won't get in the ring hanging around the business as it is, never have, and Emma wasn't a competitor and wasn't ever gonna be. So I had an attitude with her for... man, must've been half a year or more. What changed it was something we did with the Golden Age.” -- A clip from as-yet unaired footage runs next; Emma is in the ring, consoling a worker who, bent double and almost entirely out of shot, isn't recognisable; Helen Bach moves in behind her, grabs her and plants her with the Bronx Buster, rising up again immediately and calling for something, arm raised in invitation. Seconds later, Rich Money comes crashing down across Emma Chase with the Dollars from Heaven as Helen pumps her fist in the air in celebration... -- Bach grins. “She took it like a pro. Originally it was just meant to be me laying her out, but she suggested Money drop his finish on top to really rub home the heat. It's not enough, in my eyes, to know the business; you gotta be willing to do the right thing for it, and Emma was nothing but. “I'm looking forward to playing catch-up with her this Supreme Challenge weekend. It's kind of a tradition these days. “We had a pretty good crew by the end. Kate helped, obviously, but I think Heidi was responsible for a lot of it. There wasn't enough women's wrestling opportunities for anyone to really stretch their legs without taking everything they could get back then, and Heidi made sure to keep as many doors open as she could. You'll never find a better den mother.”
