He smirks, looking around his friends. “Yeah, thought you might. “Last time I was here I said I was Too Good For TV. It seems like TV has really improved, I guess. “Or maybe I just sold out to you lot. Maybe when they came to me, when they begged me to come back, when they promised me any title shot, all the money they could offer...” He laughs. “Yeah, maybe that was it. Maybe that's the only damn reason I'm here. “Except that's only kind of true. I left, when I left, with some unfinished business. Cahill put me on the shelf so hard I couldn't come back for some time. And when I recovered, I felt like I didn't care. “I didn't care that Pete Hall took my title – by cheating, let's not forget – and I didn't care that Brent Hill was gunning for me, claiming I couldn't beat him no matter what.” The fans react strongly to that particular reinvention of history. “I even didn't care that Horatio Dangerous, one of my right-hand men, screwed me over in my last match with this company. “Or that's what I told myself. Dangerous screwed over a true Brit since I left, too – this man here – and while JD is going to be dealing with that this Saturday at Hearts of Lions, I'm taking my second guaranteed title shot. The last one I get. And I'm going to prove that Brent Hill has nothing on me. “And I'm going to do it because once I recovered from what Cahill did, I started training again. And I got back into thinking about wrestling. And man, I realised then... I realised then just how much the idea that I didn't care was a lie. I realised that I had targets again. People I had to train to beat. “So that's what I'm here to do. I'm going to knock off Brent, which gets me back to champion. I'm going to take on Horatio, assuming he survives the match when JD destroys him, and I'm going to get back to where I was. “And you'd best get used to it, because one way or another I plan to be champ for the rest of my career." He glances across to Wanda. "Oh, by the way, pet... I love the new look." vs. w/ Danny Patterson vs. Fumihiro Ota w/ Floyd Goldworthy It's a hell of a size difference. Ota may be the heel, but you almost feel sympathetic, particularly as he makes the mistake of bowing at the start of the match, and Patterson, grinning, uses the chance to open with a headbutt, staggering Ota. The TCW wunderkind comes back as soon as he recovers, playing the part of the world's most dangerous mouse to Patterson's cat. It's pretty even, early on, and then Ota finally finds the point where he can strike without attracting a comeback hit – but much as he can hurt Patterson, there's one thing he can't do. He can't get Patterson off his feet – and the big man uses that, in the end, managing – finally – to score with the Bomb from Bow Bells. A cover swiftly follows, and only Goldworthy tugging the ref out of the ring prevents the win from coming just then. And then Patterson seems to snap. He goes for Goldworthy, virtually destroying him before heading back into the ring. Ota finds himself laid out again, this time with a clothesline, Patterson drops to his knees, and forearms begin to rain down on the Golden Age man. Fair calls it with a stoppage, giving Ota the win through disqualification, and the locker room supplies just enough men to haul Patterson off. Fumihiro Ota defeated Danny Patterson Rating: D- The camera finds itself, once again, in the Man Mountain's locker room. This time, Cahill has taped a photo of the Human Arsenal to a locker door. Periodically, he fires a punch into the photograph's face, denting the locker; by the looks of things, he's been doing this for some time. “You know, Ronnie,” a familiar voice begins, “it's not too late.” The camera pulls back, showing Herb and Cahill in the same shot. Cahill turns, slowly, to regard Stately, who continues. “She hurt you. I can see that. But all this time I've been saying that you and I, we can still make our names. We can still make this work.” Cahill looks at him for a long moment, throws a final punch – severing the door from the locker – and nods. Stately allows himself half a smile. vs. Coleman & Ferdinand vs. Ricky Dale Johnson & Steve Flash If Any Means Necessary has a weak link, that weak link is Nathan Coleman, the new SCCW Tag Champion. Still, Stuart Ferdinand is a great competitor and Coleman is rapidly improving, so this match is well received from the off; Flash in particular seeming a standout competitor, brawling with Coleman and taking it to the mat with Ferdinand. Meanwhile, Johnson takes the fight to both men, making Ferdinand look deadly by selling well and letting Coleman get steady offence. Near the end of the twelth minute, he manages to drop Coleman with the Southern Justice, getting the win. Ricky Dale Johnson & Steve Flash defeated Coleman & Ferdinand Rating: C- Johnson and Flash, celebrating, are joined in the ring by Tom Gilmore and Kit. Gilmore hands a second microphone off to Ricky, and then calls a halt to the applause. “Some things have been said recently that I feel I need to answer,” he says. “And some things have happened. I'm not dumb enough to say that because Thatcher got fired the Golden Age has ended. But with one thing and another, it's not going to be able to occupy all of our attention this PPV. Especially with Chris taking on Money. “So, John McClean... do we have to do this again? Do I need to prove to you again I deserve the reputation I've earned? Because, you know, earning it is supposed to mean you show you deserve it. “And I've always been willing to take on anyone who wants to get in the ring with me, or to take home anyone who wants to get in the-” Kit coughs, and Gilmore stops himself from going too far off-message. “Right, right. Point is, you want a match with me, all you ever have to do is ask; if I don't have business to take care of, I'll do it. “So how about it, John? How about you and me see what we can see at Hearts of Lions and you take a step on toward what you want?” Johnson nods approvingly. “I've got much the same attitude,” he says. “I don't know how many times I gotta repeat it, but I came here to wrestle. I want to test myself, I want to win – but I want to damn well wrestle, and the reason I'm working with these guys is because I figure the Golden Age ain't gonna let that happen in peace. “So it turns out I got some free time – and Bryan Holmes, that means you get a chance to walk with the big boys. I just hope you measure up to what I keep hearing.” vs. w/ Pistol Pete Hall vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama Johnson sticks around to supply commentary for the main event. And he got a real treat, as the two men put on one of the best matches the promotion's seen, if not the very best. Hall and Gilmore exemplify different styles, but their abilities seem precisely evenly matched, another main event heading for the time limit – but then there's an unusual arrival. Fumihiro Ota smashes Gilmore in the back of the head with a top rope Ninja Strike. Try as he might, Gilmore can't get it back to even after that impactful distraction, and while Ota and Hatoyama put on something of a high-spot clinic outside, Hall batters Gilmore soundly before scoring with the Pistol Whip Lariat to get the pinfall. Looks like the Golden Age have a new member... Pistol Pete Hall defeated Tom Gilmore Rating: B A strong show and a superb main event can mean only one thing; a great response and strong fan interest.
Great work on the Cornell promo. Managed to miss predicting on this one - sorry bout that. Another good show, as always.
Missing predictions happens, and you've got a chance to earn back at the PPV. Thanks for mentioning the Cornell piece - he's a complete pain to nail down a character for, so I'm trying a different approach this time.

“I'd worked,” Tom Gilmore begins, “for AMW, but in hindsight I realise, the same way everyone does, that AMW was going nowhere. To this day I don't understand how it was that AMW got a TV deal... Really, I count my arrival at Philly Pro as the point where my career actually began to gain steam.” -- “If it hadn't been for my time with Philly Pro,” Stuart Ferdinand offers, “I wouldn't ever have tagged up with Nathan. These days, people forget that I did much else. Horatio Dangerous came in pretty late in my career, but he still defined it.” -- “What people forget,” Phil Vibert begins thoughtfully, “is that just because at the end of the War I was the one who still had his company, it doesn't mean that the other companies were bad ideas. Hopefully by this stage people will have seen why the War was such a hard fight for so long. And what Philly Pro's legacy was, for me, was that... it proved that a small company out of the East Coast could make TV that sold. “Make no mistake – News of the War hurt Andrew Barber's wallet. But National Pride – they never had to complain. News of the War's ratings proved that you could take a company that was just starting to get decent word-of-mouth outside its home base and grow its fanbase – and your audience – by a factor in the hundreds of percent in the first year. “And that was absolutely necessary,” he smiles, “to my getting a better deal when Danger Zone TV first hit the air. “On top of that... I would probably have never hired Sammy Bach if it hadn't been for the way Dangerous built him up. Bryan Holmes would certainly never have been a DaVE champion. There are others, but those stand out.” -- Emma Chase smiles. “It was a first taste of TV for many of us. It was like getting to practice on a grand stage. And when you think of the people who've gone on to be champions elsewhere since Andy and Horatio gave them that first shot...” -- [i]The view shifts to a montage, each wrestler shown in one of their crowning Philly Pro moments.
Does that recap mean what I think it means, Phantom?
If you think it means this is just about over... maybe. I'm confident of having at least another month, and our standing is getting better and better, which means our PPV revenue may start to pull us around. But from the moment I saw Barber had given me the goal of making it to Cult fast I knew I was walking a dangerous line. We may make it through into ninety-nine, and if we do I'm reasonably confident that there'll be light on the other side of the tunnel. Or I may have bought Philly Pro only another half a year beyond canon. ... If, on the other hand, you think it means Richard Eisen is being a complete dick by not referring to a single TCW achievement, then you're absolutely right. ;)

I was referring to the "oh lord please don't let this be over" moment I had reading that. Hope things keep going for awhile yet but I'll understand when it does come to a close. In a way, its kind cool that the end of PPPW would coincide pretty close to the actual C-V canon... And I didn't pick up the lack of TCW accomplishments. Nice.

And I didn't pick up the lack of TCW accomplishments. Nice.
Why this section came when it did... I was rewatching the Rise & Fall of ECW DVD a couple of weeks ago. (As part of trying to get the feel right for this, I've watched R&F, the Bret Hart disc, the Horsemen disc, the Warrior disc, and a few other WWE 'histories' God only knows how many times. As a hidden highlight - watch the Horsemen history, then go back and reread Nero's commentary just after Tornado debuts. It's not the only direct dialogue lift from real life - though there aren't many - but it's my favourite.) To get in all the points the editors wanted to make within the context of the story, the factors that they sell as ultimately killing ECW start cropping up in interviews with quite a while to go before the final shows. In the same way, various people - notably Phil Vibert - have been mentioning issues with Philly Pro's situation for quite a while now. I felt the time was about right to talk about the company's legacy, wanting to do that comfortably before an endpoint.

I think doing something that's a retrospective like this means its important to establish the legacy throughout, not just at the end. It always seemed like something you were doing all along. I've honestly never watched through the entirety of most of those DVDs. Always mean to. A buddy of mine has most of them but I've been spending my time on the SS boxed set of late. My wrestling history isn't as strong as it should be at this point.

The Horsemen disc, however, has one of the all-time hilarious moments in Paul Roma proclaiming "Ric Flair wishes he was me."

I've wanted to watch a lot of those WWE sets for awhile, plus some shoot DVDs. Going back through the SummerSlam, Wrestle Mania, and Royal Rumble over the past few months has been awesome, as it took me back through some periods where I watched closely and eras that helped formed my preferences for today. I honestly never watched enough of WCW (or JCP before that) or ECW back in the day.

Their choices of matches are that great, but the documentary is usually good. On top of that, I suggest to any wrestling fan a good reading : Bret Hart's autobiography. It's good trip in the life of a pro wrestler. As for PPPW, I gotta say it was kinda expected. We could all see that your growth to cult was very fast and it could mean trouble. Deep down inside, we tried to ignore it though. ;)

It may still turn out OK (I have been blessed by a very strong Wrestling Industry and strong Economy, though both are now starting to fall a little) but, well... I'd rather be prepared. And I do have the next diary in prep, just in case...

Prediction Key: Horatio Dangerous vs. JD Morgan w/ Wanda Fish - Morgan's on his way up PPPW Tag Championship Nero's Disciples (c) w/ Professor Nero vs. Dangerous Brothers - Not quite time for the Nero's boys to drop the belts quite yet. Bryan Holmes vs. Ricky Dale Johnson - Just a feeling. John McClean vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama - Gilmore's a future megastar. PINFALL ONLY MATCH Chris Rockwell vs. Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy - Good way to blow this off w/o causing too much damage to Money. PPPW Tri-State Championship Brent Hill (c) vs. Tommy Cornell w/ Wanda Fish - DQ or some other non-clean finish to Tommy doesnt get the belt, but stays strong.
