The bell rings, two savvy wrestlers collide in the centre, and... It's one of the best matches Philly Pro has seen. When they fought to a draw their chemistry together was evident, but as they work together here, seamlessly transitioning from move to move, counter to hold, as Wanda Fish works herself up over the even battle on commentary, there's no getting away from it; this ranks up with the two or three very best matches the company has put out to date. Morgan goes after his former ally like a man possessed, while Dangerous concentrates on trying to prove he can outwrestle his opponent under any circumstances – which works, but which works only so long as Morgan concentrates on a brutal assault. After about ten minute Morgan's temper visibly cools and he shifts gears, starting to simply overwhelm the veteran with slick technical moves tempered by only an occasional European uppercut to stagger Dangerous. Just past the fifteen minute mark the Cross-Atlantic Stretch makes an end of it. It's a fairly lengthy match – perhaps a hair too long – between two not-greatly-seasoned tag teams, but as ever, the Tag Championship matches are a notch beyond what Philly Pro tag wrestling was the year before. In the finish Dog Fyte hoists Richard Dangerous for a powerbomb, only to be speared by Adrian who launches himself from the top rope halfway across the ring. Fyte crumbles with Richard on top, who hooks the leg – and the Brothers steal one, their victory as close to outside the rules as you get. But, as Barber points out, “that don't matter – not once you get the gold.” Dangerous Brothers defeated Nero's Disciples. Rating: D- As Adrian goes to roll back into the ring, Nero catches him from behind with his cane, dropping him like a stone. Tornado goes for Richard next, and he and Dog Fyte hit an assisted powerbomb to the outside of the ring, leaving the champions lying as the Disciples stalk back up the ramp. vs. Bryan Holmes vs. Ricky Dale Johnson A hard fight for both men, and a good one, getting the crowd's interest back after the tag issues. Johnson's big, tough, and hits hard; Holmes is smaller, quicker, and cannier. On paper that seems like your typical Goliath and David matchup, but on paper you can say that for most big guy/little guy matches, and the utterly driven Holmes deserves credit for standing and brawling with Johnson for as long as he does before realising how futile it is. Of particular note is the finish, where Holmes counters the Southern Justice attempt, swinging around to score with a German suplex and pick up the victory. Bryan Holmes defeated Ricky Dale Johnson Rating: C The camera takes us backstage to the Golden Age locker room, and Rich Money is in deep consultation with Goldworthy. “...you're sure he's ready?” Money asks as the feed kicks in, and Goldworthy nods, smiling. “It's taken-” The door is kicked open, and Chris Rockwell stands there glowering. “Chris,” Money smiles easily, feigning a welcome. “What can I do for-” “Thought that stunt of yours was cute, right?” Rockwell interrupts. “The pinfall-only thing. “Well,” Money smiles. “No submissions means-” “Wrong.” And suddenly Rockwell's smiling the peaceful smile of an innocent. “I'll clamp that hold on, Rich. Mark my words.” “I...” Money falters. “I don't see...” “You made a mistake, Rich. You made it so you can't tap to save yourself. I'd love to see you kick out with a broken freakin' arm... and you're going to have to.” Chris pauses, glances across to Goldworthy, nods decisively and leaves. Money looks sourly back to Goldworthy. “Make damn sure, Floyd,” he says. “I'm not losing money for this.” vs. w/ John McClean vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama If proof were needed of how far Philly Pro has come, this match could stand as the testimony. Last time these two fought, less than a year ago, they were locked into a blood feud that had gone for half of a year – and the overall crowd reaction was less than you'd see here. Both men are now better known and, frankly, both men are now just overall better. Gilmore in particular has treated 1998 as his own personal breakout party – to judge by his Philly Pro persona, in just about every way you can mean that phrase. The mouthpiece of Any Means Necessary meets the leader of the Action Pack and the result is instant, with the crowd roaring in approval throughout. Gone is Gilmore's jokey attitude from the last time they feuded – now he's having to fight for every inch of ground, with absolutely zero letup, as the wrestling purist McClean looks to make it two for two. He doesn't, but it's a close-run thing; he blocks the World Shatters. He rolls clear of the Utopia Trap submission Gilmore likes to use. And Gilmore just barely gets a foot to the rope after a Stain Removal. It looks like McClean has it sewn up, until a death valley driver attempt sees Gilmore flip forward, scoring the three off a fluke sunset flip. Tom Gilmore defeated John McClean Rating: C+ PINFALL ONLY MATCH vs. w/ Chris Rockwell vs. Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy It's been building for some months, and both men know how much it means to the crowd. They work that emphasis smartly, Rockwell looking closer to unhinged than driven as he relentlessly assaults Money's arm, with the former Maximum Champion wrestling well but unable to entirely turn aside the attack. Eventually Rockwell manages to flip through into the Fujiwara Armbar, and there's nothing Jay Fair can do. Money braces his feet and leans back, forcing his own shoulders to the mat, but as the count reaches two Rockwell shifts slightly, rolling Money into a different position without breaking the hold. Money screams in pain and frustration, much to the crowd's satisfaction... And then Rockwell gets a chair to the face. The crowd go ballistic and the camera pulls back out, revealing Black Jack Marlowe standing over him. Again, there's nothing Fair can do; this match can't end by DQ, only by pinfall. Another three chair shots leave Rockwell down and out cold. Gingerly testing his arm, Money finally nods in satisfaction, climbing to the top rope to deliver an entirely unnecessary Dollars from Heaven to pick up the win. Rich Money defeated Chris Rockwell Rating: B- Goldworthy and Money both congratulate Marlowe, who's standing by, watching in satisfaction. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Money crows into the microphone, “please welcome the latest addition to corporate America, the latest man to see where the money can truly be made, and the newest star in the Golden Age... Black Jack Marlowe!” Boos and hatred rain down in reaction... Emma Chase emerges from the back as the Golden Age leave. Gone is her slinky satin dress; now she's going with the miniskirt and interesting-cut top look she sported, way back, in the nightclub video, every inch as hot but easier to relate to. “There's been trouble, lately, in my little organisation,” she says. “So, on behalf of my client – who sends his apologies that he cannot wrestle tonight, due to injury – I'd like to ask my other client to explain himself.” Ronnie Cahill emerges, this time with Herb Stately right beside him. Stately smiles. “As of now, Emma, the Man Mountain is not your client. He's seen where your interests truly lay – in giving yourself a leg over... I beg your pardon, a leg up... at his expense. He's not a goddamn fool, Emma, and you must have known that this was going to come back to bite you. “Face it, it's over.” “I can speak for my own goddamn self,” growls a deep voice, heard without the benefit of microphone - and suddenly, abruptly, the silent Cahill rips the microphone from Stately. The audience go dead silent. Ronnie Cahill never speaks. “It ain't over till I say it's over, bitch. Your new little toy's got a belt – I'm going to take it from him. “And then I'm going to break you.” PPPW Tri-State Championship vs. w/ Brent Hill © vs. Tommy Cornell w/ Wanda Fish As the PPV began, so did it end – with one of the greatest matches in the company's history. Nineteen minutes of fast-paced action between two of the very best independent wrestlers in the world, an echo down time from a future TCW dream match, and no way to tell who the better man is for so long. The contest goes back and forth, each man finding their stride, being knocked from it, fighting from underneath, dominating, in turn. Azaria finally sheds entirely his HGC bias, openly proclaiming this contest the equal of anything on pay-per-view at the time (a slight exaggeration to say the least) and it seems like nothing could blunt the crowd's enthusiasm... Rich Money rolls under the ropes and lunges, taking Cornell down in a Plumelli Press and hammering away with punch after punch to the forehead – punches which, the camera discovers as Cornell splits open, are loaded with brass knuckle goodness. It's a clear DQ victory for Cornell on his final guaranteed title shot – and to add insult to injury, he has to be saved by his opponent, Brent Hill dragging Money off him, ducking a punch and laying the leader of the Golden Age out with a DDT as the pay-per-view comes to a close. Tommy Cornell won by DQ Rating: B A little drag from the tag storyline weakens the show, but nonetheless it was a card to be proud of and easily the best Philly Pro show to date, helping Philly Pro grow their audience once more. Next on SWF 24/7: The fall of an East Coast Warrior. Show Rating: C+

Which means they miss a very real fact – the fact that wrestling is a contest. “Let's say, just for a moment, that I'd set up XFW... I don't know. Where Rip hangs out nowadays in the Mid-Atlantic. Maybe two or three times a year Richard Eisen swings through town and gets the fans in. Maybe two or three times a year you get HGC, too. “And the rest of the time I have the place to myself, right? TV hooks people, but if you're the only game they can get to live, it doesn't matter that it's not your TV. They like the concept. “If I'd done that, I think XFW would still be around today. But I set it up where I lived, where I was known, where wrestling was hot. “Which meant there were a lot more fans to go round, but they weren't just going round me and occasional big names. The big names come through more often – it's a bigger market for them – and the Stomper, Andy Barber, Flash Phil and Preston all take their slice of the pie, too. “So the fans, they don't go so far. And that's assuming all things are equal. “And here's where wrestling as a contest comes in – because it's not. “Sure, if I go out there with Randall Hopkirk and we do a match, we're not competing with each other. But if that's the big match for that month's show, me and Randall are competing. We're a team, and we're competing with, say, Hill, Money and Flash. We're competing with Cousin Ezra and Silver Shark. “We're competing with Johnny Martin and Archangel. “And if they put out better matches, theirs looks like a better money match. They win the contest that month. And the amount of fans divides that way, not equally. “So maybe, sure, that month Rapid handed us the win. But Martin and Archangel, they schooled us. Hill, Money, Flash? They're all great guys and they'll make it work. I think it was Pistol Pete and Archangel over for the Stomper, and they did it too. “I think we were delivering good fights, good stories, what people wanted. I truly do. “But we weren't delivering it as well as the Stomper or Phil. We weren't delivering with the kind of TV distribution Andy had. And our boys cost us more than Cousin Ezra. “So during November 1998, we put our affairs in order and...” He sighs. “And Phil Vibert picked up the phone. “Phil was making more profit per new fan than any of the rest of us. “And he had a plan.”
RPW's main event was... Cousin Ezra vs. Silver Shark? Their main event? Really?
Ezra has been champ there since Steve Flash left, which is to say, around a year. Alex Braun and Blue Sky have not been given title shots; it's been Ezra vs. Shark, Ezra vs. Pete the Hillbilly, Ezra vs. UK Dragon (then Dragon outgrew them and left), Ezra vs. Lance Henderson... And so far as I can see, no, Cousin Ezra has not improved.

At least, it will be one possible explanation of why DAVE won the war. XWF just couldn't cut it with their product, PPPW tried to grow too fast. Vibert just had to be patient and smarter than his competitors with his money. See, it will all makes sense even if we'll be very sad to see this end.

Though I will note that there is no logical explanation for Cousin Ezra's title run.

Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Whistler Holmes & Ferdinand vs. The New Wave British Invasion w/ Wanda Fish vs. Dangerous Family It'll be really sad to see this come to an end. But then I'm definitely planning on reading through again from the start when it does. Then I can really see it wholly as the retrospective that the diary has been aiming at.

I stood by him, just as he stood by me. We earned gold together. I like to think we earned your respect together. And just two nights ago he did something I cannot understand. “He interfered in a match to beat a man who's earned nothing but respect. “So Jack, I want to hear it from you, and I want these good people to hear it too. “Why did you do it?” Marlowe emerges a moment later, but it's not Back in Black that plays, it's Money for Nothing and Rich Money stands beside him, smirking. “What are you, really?” Money begins, apparently thoughtful. “A relic of the past? Maybe, maybe not. A patriot? Sure. And that's what tied you and Jack together, right?” He nods. “I can understand that, man. “But you've got to understand, a patriot... he has to follow his country. And you haven't, Whistler. If the first thing I thought about you was to call you a relic, it's because times have changed. Your country has changed. “You want to serve your country? So does Jack. And in this golden age, there's one thing that this country respects, needs, and which you need to succeed. “Money. The time when our troops were the big names – when what you are actually mattered – is long gone. What this country needs is money. “And all Jack's done is find a way to earn it. To make his countrymen proud.” Whistler frowns, and beckons. “Let's see whether I still matter, shall we?” w/ vs. Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Whistler A good strong opening match is testimony to just how popular Whistler remains. Money brings the talent, Whistler brings the fan support, and the result is a very sound match, ending – perhaps surprisingly – clean as Money ducks the Rebel Yell, responds instantly with a neckbreaker, and finishes with the Dollars from Heaven. Rich Money defeated Whistler Rating: C Back from commercial and the Dangerous Family are in the interview area, psyching themselves up. “OK,” Horatio says. “I took a knockback Saturday. But that isn't the story here. The story here is these two, my sons, two great athletes who just won a title on their first shot-” “Guess the apple falls plenty far from the tree,” comes a voice, as Tommy Cornell swaggers into shot. “Congratulations, boys; maybe you won't be the laughing stock your old man is. A title! And so young! “Come on, Harry, how is this not pissing you off? They've been in the business less time than a mayfly and they've already done what you never, ever could.” Horatio looks furious, and makes to go for Cornell – who suddenly has Giedroyc and Morgan backing him up. There's a long moment's standoff. “What do you reckon, boys?” Horatio asks softly. Richard opens his mouth to speak – and Adrian Dangerous lets out a wild yell and hurls himself at Morgan. Cornell and Horatio crash into each other a moment later and in seconds the scene's a brawl. Then a single big man gets between the two sides. “The hell is wrong with you?” Danny Patterson demands. “Why are you blowin' all this outta proportion? Boys, I wrestle back home from time to time. I can tell you for damn sure some of the Brits ain't worth it. “And a hell of a lot of us are. Including the people I see round me – no offence,” he adds, glancing at the young tag champions. “This shouldn't be an argument! This should be a buncha good wrestlers getting ready to see who's best! See what's what!” “Maybe you think so, sunbeam,” Morgan growls. “But mess with my business again and you'll regret it for a long time.” vs. Holmes & Ferdinand vs. The New Wave It's not a great contest, though it could be a lot worse. Any Means Necessary continue to tear through their opposition, dismantling the New Wave over just under a quarter of an hour. The New Wave keep using that five-second rule, breaking pins, breaking holds, hitting double teams, keeping the fans interested in as many ways as they can. Eventually the frustration takes hold; Stuart Ferdinand clamps Scout into the Butterfly Lock as Bryan Holmes yanks Guide off the apron and suplexes him into the guardrail. And with less than ten minutes bell to bell, it didn't have the time it probably needed to develop. Cornell shines as the clear standout future star he was in this match, and in particular when he and Horatio are in the ring the contest catches the fans attention. It's by no means a bad match, and it's livened up by Danny Patterson's assault on Tommy Cornell after he low blows Adrian Dangerous behind the ref's back. That's not enough, though; as Patterson clears out of the ring to brawl with Morgan on the outside, Horatio tags in, Wanda hops up onto the apron, and a stiletto-assisted arc kick later, Horatio stumbles into the Guilt Trip. The tapout is abruptly inevitable. The British Invasion defeated The Dangerous Family Rating: C- The Man Mountain, backed once again by Herb Stately is out next. Stately promptly collects a microphone. “Welcome back,” he declares, “to Cahill's Corner! “As ever when my client is allowed to show his true power, Mr Barber has expressed a certain unwillingness to risk his other talent against us. And let's face it...” Cahill slams one meaty fist into the other palm with a smack like a leg of lamb being hurled to the chopping board. “It's easy to see why,” Stately continues smoothly. “So it was that we created this event. So that my client may still demonstrate to those around us how dangerous he can be. “And this week, we've got a new challenger. I suppose, as close to Vegas as we are, someone was bound to be willing to wager their life.” A youngster hops the rails and slides into the ring. Tugging his T-shirt off, his slim, toned physique draws appreciative whistles from the female half of the audience. ”Wait,” Cahill growls. ”Wear this.” He tosses something at the challenger, which turns out, as it's donned, to be a Human Arsenal shirt. And then Cahill moves. It's not fast – Cahill can't do that – but it's unstoppable as an asteroid strike, as implacable as the wrath of God. The kid sells like a champion, flying backward, catching himself on the top rope with the small of the back and rolling with the momentum, sending himself flipping up, back and out such that he crashes inevitably into the steel crowd barrier. And then he simply crumples. Cahill nods. ”I told you I could do it,” he growls. ”Get me the match, Barber. “We're done here.” -- Not the greatest of shows, but nonetheless successful, garnering more support for the company nationwide. The good guy usually takes it at the Supreme Challenge for a reason, and we don't break that rule lightly. That's an example, y'know, kind of a minor one, but...” He pauses, collecting his thoughts. “New programs are good. They get people interested, they establish characters, they can really refresh what you have on tap. “But at heart, any story you tell in wrestling is based around the same concepts. Someone has something. Someone else wants it. “You can dress that up any number of different ways, add in cheating or refusing to, and when female managers began to be phased in that opened up a couple of other options, but that's what wrestling should be about, and, ah...” He pauses, obviously considering the SWF's less-than-stellar Election storyline from the prior year. “And when we forget that, we usually pay the price. “The only other storyline that tends to work is denial; when someone doesn't want another person to have something, even if they don't want it themselves. In a way, Philly Pro was built on that kind of story – at least, that's how the various invasions they ran seemed to work. “So some degree of repetition is, y'know, it's going to happen. When Philly Pro finally went to the end, it had more than one mind trying to make things wrap up right. And for them, a lot of that was about taking the storylines fans had caught on to and finding a way to distil down the essence, y'know? So Whistler and Century, the attempt to take America and talk about religion, gets replaced by Whistler and Money. “And to tie into the Arsenal's undefeated streak and his Maximum Championship, they revisited the way the Maximum Championship was introduced... and held undefeated,” Eisen raises a finger to mark the point, “until injury forced a vacation. So it tied together, y'know. “Because the storytelling was something the East Coast War helped to revolutionise. The development of Big Cat Brandon, the spectacular night Jim Force spent with DaVE... “They turned the way the fans were developing their awareness of the business into part of the story.” He grins. “That was brilliant, I thought. What we've done since, sometimes, builds off that. We signed Emma, for example, a couple months before we finalised the deal with Brandon. I'd probably have suggested waiting to launch her with her client, but the fans knew she was dating Sammy, the fans knew DaVE's best were up for grabs...” -- A slick video package; dating from Under Control 2007. Emma Chase is shown interviewing SWF stars, on the phone elsewhere, receiving FedEx contract offers. At one point the Adrenaline Rush DaVE theme, Bowie's The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell kicks in mid-promo, causing a massive pop for a moment. Intercut with the shots of Emma's month-and-a-half quest for a client is the incident that led to the Under Control match; an episode of Joe Sexy's SWF chatshow segment 'Sexy Time'. “Anyway,” Sexy says, turning his attention away from the amused, supercilious Chase for a moment. “Who better for your first... client... than me, right?” “I don't think so.” “Ahh, so you don't want our relationship to stay professional. I like it!” “...Is there one single solitary way for me to say no that you won't read as yes?” “Come on, woman!” Sexy grins. “For as long as I've been watching wrestling you've been steaming up my screen. You need me and you in the same stable, rolling in the hay. You're a cougar!” “Cougar.” Chase repeats the word coolly, still amused rather than anything else. She laughs, and across the nation a thousand teenage boys become men. “Me?” “You.” “Cougar...” She looks around the audience, drawing it out. Some of the fans have already guessed what's coming; there's even a sign visible calling for the Big Cat. “Not quite,” she says, and Life to Lifeless by Killswitch Engage hits. Brandon James storms the ring. Big Cat Pounce. Big Cat Pounce. Big Money Move. Brandon Bomb Drop. Sexy's dead in the water, and Chase's smile hasn't changed. -- “We could never have done what we did without the changes the East Coast brought on,” Eisen confirms. “But we had the advantage of the money to back it up.”
Good show, as always, but absolutely love that last piece with Eisen and Emma. Love it.
That bit wrote itself once I started, chiefly once I thought up the cougar moment. Cheerfully stolen from, I think, Eisen-Verse's comment ages ago is the name of Joe Sexy's show; cheerfully stolen from yourself is Big Money's theme. These little clips from elsewhere are way fun to write, not least because I generally don't have to figure out how they fit into anything...

And had a very solid point to it, too. Plus, I love when people pull little pieces from other diaries, so the theme jumped out at me, plus I knew I had heard the "Sexy Time" somewhere before.
