Prediction Key: Henry Bennett vs. The Hype The Hype is getting a damn good push, and has all the makings of a future star. A company could be built around this man! Richard Dangerous vs. The Punisher Richie wins, as The Punisher is old enough to transfer some of that overness. Black Jack Marlowe vs. John Maverick John's the better prospect to start with. Rich Money & Jimmy Cox vs. Stuart Ferdinand & Nathan Coleman Rich Money need to be kept strong, and the Immortal Driver is very powerful. Ferdinand and Coleman may be big in Japan, or at least are going to be big in Japan, but I don't think they'll carry the day here. The Natural vs. Travis Century The Dark Preacher sacrifices another disgusting paragon of virtue. CHAMPION VS CHAMPION Tom Gilmore vs. Whistler So, do we put over our champion, or the champion of a defunct, crappy promotion? Hmm, I wonder. NUMBER ONE CONTENDERSHIP Brent Hill vs. Horatio Dangerous vs. Tommy Cornell w/ Wanda Fish How can we not?

Bennett seems oddly uncomfortable in his heel role; every sneaky, underhand tactic is signposted ahead of time; it's a shame, as Bennett's reputation and general look almost pigeonhole him as a man fans love to hate. With the awkwardness that arises whenever Bennett closes down Todd's offence, the match is awkward – but it does feature the Hype countering an armbar into his freshly-coined finisher, the Aitch-Bomb. And that carries the day... Rating: E- The opening guitar lick to Rocking in the Free World sounds through the arena and the Tri-State Champ marches to the ring, flag held high, microphone in the other hand. “Been a while since we spoke, huh? That's OK, it happens from time to time. But it's time we talked again. See, I've been given an honour tonight. “Fellow called Tom Gilmore was the last man to hold the belt in AMW. He's still got it. We're fighting tonight. We'll see what's what. “But you know something – I want you guys to give him a big hand either way. Tom Gilmore is a good wrestler and... “... “You know, I can't promise I'm gonna win here.” The microphone hits the canvas. Whistler collects his flag and heads backstage once again. The crowd's reaction is loud – and confused. vs. Richard Dangerous vs. The Punisher There's still weak performances in the ring; Philly Pro is becoming a place that relies upon their main events. The clear better worker in the ring is Dangerous, but the Punisher is, just as clearly, reluctant to let a rookie call the match. They work past that as best they can, playing the classic big man/little man contest, and Dangerous spends most of the match being beaten down, with a particularly neat moment coming when he tries a cross-body; the Punisher catches, drops into a backbreaker, then smoothly rises into a fallaway slam. That moment actually weakens the finish, though; it's a moment that shines as the one point the Punisher does more than go through the motions, and the sprightliness displayed there makes him sandbagging for the Dangerous Brainbuster more evident. Richard barely manages to execute the move safely but gets the count – albeit with the Punisher kicking out vigorously the moment he can do it without changing the finish. Rating: E- Dangerous celebrates and a familiar figure slides into the ring behind him. As the younger man turns around, he freezes for a moment, then raises his arms again. Holmes grins, then points at him, back to himself, then down at the ring. A silent challenge made, he leaves, Dangerous watching him all the way. vs. Black Jack Marlowe vs. John Maverick Tension in the Skid Row crowd at the awkwardness of events thus far seems to dissolve. Maverick's unquestioning, unconditional assault plays well against Black Jack's hard-hitting style. Neither man seems willing to speak, two different flavours of tough-guy front colliding. For over ten minutes the winner is very much in question; eventually, however, a lethal-looking left jab staggers Marlowe and Maverick capitalises, applying the Deadly Silence. Marlowe has little choice but to submit... Rating: D Applause follows from the top of the ramp. Floyd Goldworthy has been watching, unnoticed until this moment. Strolling down unaccompanied, he collects Barber's mic, as always, and climbs into the ring. “Been watching you, John,” he says. “You're doing well, but you could be doing better. “You're the kind of guy I can see beating the Complete Package at his own game soon – with the right training, the right inside information.” Maverick says nothing. “I can offer you that,” Goldworthy continues. “My clients are the stuff of champions. I help keep them there. “And that's a solid Gold guarantee.” Maverick still doesn't answer. Goldworthy smiles. “Just think about it,” he says. “You'll make the smart decision.” He tosses the microphone back to Barber and leaves. As he does, Action Jackson lets out a low whistle. “The Gold Guarantee is back, then.” “Unfortunately,” Barber nods. vs. Rich Money & Jimmy Cox vs. Coleman & Ferdinand Something of a historic match, this, and a number of the better-informed fans on SWF 24/7 probably think of this as a better contest than the fans at the time do as a result; this is the first time that Nathan Coleman and Stuart Ferdinand teamed up. The experience they have together, obviously, isn't there, but it's possible to see echoes of what will evolve into practiced spots and well-designed sequences as the two heels dominate much of the match. Philly fans chant incessantly for the Immortal Driver, with Cox actually spending the bulk of the time in the ring for his side – and he makes a good show for himself, allowing Coleman and Ferdinand to build up sequences of hold and counter-hold in an extremely old-school heat segment. When the hot tag finally comes Money does well, a big boot felling Coleman, a massive release bodyslam sending Ferdinand a solid four feet, but with the ref clearing Ferdinand out of the ring he misses the low blow Coleman delivers, turning round just in time for the Pioneer Twist. Between those two, Coleman picks up the pinfall Rating: D- Horatio Dangerous is out next, collecting a microphone from the desk. “OK,” he begins. “It seems no matter what I do, how fair I try to play it, the American system just doesn't want to admit I deserve to finish what Whistler and I started. We all know full well that the reason I lost two weeks ago is that I was forced into a match I shouldn't have had to face – because even Barber acknowledged I deserved the chance to finish things with Whistler one-on-one. “So now, tonight, I have another of these ridiculous hurdles to get through before I can finally beat Whistler and put this whole thing behind me. You other boys who want to get your hands on the champion - stay the hell out of my way. “You'll get your chance when I'm done.” vs. The Natural vs. Travis Century At this point in their careers, Century is the moneyspinner. Arguably, he's also the better worker – but that's a big debate. His running tirade this time chastises the Natural for “not being sufficiently prideful,” and exhorts him to “revel in your natural ability to wound, to injure, to assert your prowess!” This is, otherwise, much the same match as the one he had against Jimmy Cox, save that with the referee down... ...Rick Sanders vaults the crowd barrier, snatches the Natural's hockey stick from outside the ring and catches Century on the small of the back as Carvill's set up for the Salvation. Carvill lands on his feet and scores with the Nature Calls as Sanders revives the referee for something of an upset. Rating: D- Herb Stately and Man Mountain Cahill appear, marching down to the ring. As Stately obtains a microphone Cahill tosses both exhausted, injured grapplers from the ring, giving his manager room to pace. “Cornell!” he calls. “I know you're back there. I know you're listening. You and your little pet. “You gotta bear in mind – this is NOT over. When the Man Mountain gets hold of you-” Judas Priest hits, Breaking the Law echoing through the arena. With his girl by his side, the confident Cornell struts down to ringside, confiscating Action Jackson's mic for himself. “Please,” he snorts, doing his level best to sound even more snobbish than his accent usually triggers for American fans. “When that idiot gets hold of me? Correct me if I'm wrong, but you've been pulling your little stunts the past few months because, in your own words, the company aren't willing to risk wrestlers against you. “You think you're getting a match against me? You haven't got a hope. Right now, the safest place from that big whale is right behind that Philly Pro contract you won me.” Stately's flabberghasted, more so when Wanda, smirking, gives him the finger. He rolls out of the ring, staring in disbelief. “You're telling me the oh-so-great Tommy Cornell-” “Has better things to do,” Cornell interrupts. “Yeah, exactly. Give it up, Herb. You aren't getting anywhere.” To his surprise, Wanda rips the microphone from his hand. “Not quite true,” she says. Then, raising a leg, she plants the sole of her boot precisely in Stately's crotch. It's so unsignalled it actually takes the audience a moment to register that her boots are stiletto heels. “You did your job,” she snarls. “You got us in. We'd be even except for what you did to my brother. And I'm training with the best – so don't push it.” As the lumbering behemoth makes it out of the ring the duo are already strutting up the ramp to the accompaniment of boos that would have seemed impossible two weeks ago. CHAMPION VS. CHAMPION MATCH vs. Tom Gilmore vs. Whistler That strange endangered species known as fans of AMW, together with HGC and NOTBPW fans – much more numerous even then – recognise immediately that Gilmore's got new tights, full-leg and jet black save for flourescent green arrows running up the legs toward his groin. His strut is as confident as Cornell's, but marked by a difference; this man glad-hands the crowd, paying particular attention to every attractive woman he can find. To ensure his tights' statement isn't misconstrued, he carries the belt over his shoulder. Whistler seems uneasy going against him, and the fans aren't entirely sure who to cheer for – which weakens the crowd reaction. The story is one of skill against durability, as Gilmore runs rings around Whistler, striking fast and evading, playing to the crowd. At one point he hits something that looks pretty devastating – it starts as a twisting spinebuster and then folds outward into a spinning flapjack delivered with force – and bails to the outside to write his number on a girl's arm with a Sharpie stolen from the commentary table. And that's what costs him the match; by the time he gets back in – barely in time for the ten-count to be avoided – Whistler is waiting and the Rebel Yell sinks home. After the three-count, Gilmore turns him around and calls for a high-five; somewhat surprised, Whistler high- then side- fives, but turns out to be too slow for the low-five. Rating: D- Number One Contender's Match vs. vs. w/ Brent Hill vs. Horatio Dangerous vs. Tommy Cornell Hill finds himself in an intensely awkward position here, having prepared for a match where one of his opponents could be relied on to fight fair. Instead, both men assault Hill from the off, working in a series of vicious double-teams. There's virtually no conflict between the two Englishmen who rock Hill with every dirty trick in the book; between them both and Wanda it's essentially impossible for Jay Fair to keep up. It's a massacre, one that the Complete Package gamely fights off for as long as he possibly can, but the British Invasion, so to speak, overruns him. When Cornell finally – after three tag powerbombs – applies the Guilt Trip Horatio simply invites Wanda into the ring to celebrate. To his credit, Hill never submits, passing out after thirty seconds. Rating: B- Once again, the storylines and the main event save Philly Pro. Next on SWF 24/7: The British Invasion speak.
Brent Hill's never going to be stuck in the indies until 2007 in this alternative history if he gets booked as well as you're booking him here.
Now there's kind words! Technically he's actually doing worse than in the real C-Verse - we're into May, and in March 1997 he dethroned Whistler for his third run. On the other hand, with Dangerous, Gilmore and Cornell around, he has a much better chance to showcase himself in this world. I think it was 1PWFan who commented on the mat workers being brought in - my perception, really, is that the additions play to the strengths of a number of existing Philly Pro workers better than bringing in more brawlers. Plus, you know, Brent Hill, Tom Gilmore, Tommy Cornell - they're all worthwhile signings for the company anyway. Honestly, though, the guy I'm waiting on is Pistol Pete Hall. Just under two months until he returns...

Now I've finally found that one thing that really irritated me but I just could not put my finger on it until now.. There's no announcement or line that indicates who the winner is in the matches. I would really like that to be added so that the diary is more easier to read, especially in a hurry if you want to just know who won. Sorry for the feedback :o

Wanda's giggle is still surprisingly youthful and girlish. “Yeah, all of a sudden I'm an honorary Brit,” she says. “Don't know how that happened. I actually bought some tea to try to get into character, but it wasn't working. “I decided to concentrate on coming up with more ways to kick Herb instead. The fans seemed to get into that.” The giggle again. “I dunno... it was pretty cool. Apart from Horatio, we were all kids who were suddenly right on top, you know? It was like they were saying here's the ball, now just show us how well you can run with it. “I was grateful later. I was finding out what the pressure was like, but not wrestling for them at the time I, y'know... I got used to it before I had to deliver under it. When I got to the top with trip-A that was really useful.” -- Giedroyc smiles fondly. “I wasn't even at that show,” he says. “My sister was getting married. I called Ricky to ask how it went and he told me I was part of the biggest thing in the company. “I said thank you, hung up the phone, walked back into the party and got very drunk.” -- “It made a lot of sense,” Dangerous said, nodding. “And, really, it was Whistler's thing. He'd been talking to me about taking his character in some smart directions, but everyone that worked with was significantly below the Tri-State belt at the time. “We couldn't elevate them all for him. With Brent around and Pete coming to the end of his rehab, it was time to go a different way with the main event. We knew that the moment we screwed Brent for his shot at the title, we'd be hated. “So we could make him look a million dollars while we did it, no risk. The thing is... I seem to keep on saying this... It wasn't actually my idea. This was Andy pure and simple.” -- Barber frowns. “Well, if he wants to say that... all I really did was say that between the way Horatio was acting, Tommy, and Jack we seemed to have a British invasion going on. “At the time we pretty much planned stuff during dinner at the Dangerous house. Maggie was a hell of a cook, so I came up with whatever excuses I could to get over there round mealtimes.” He smiles. “It drove her crazy when the kids started putting together these calorie-balanced meals based around salads. Just crazy. Me and Horatio, we didn't bother, stuck to the same routines we always had. “I guess maybe I was the one who pushed for an alliance. I was trying to figure out how we could keep Horatio hated when what we'd been doing really was basically cheating him out of a decisive one-on-one match. “That's usually, you know, the way you keep the good guy down, and there was no way in hell you could call Horatio the good guy. There was just a chance that it'd turn him into one, and we didn't want that.” -- Dangerous nods. “Sorting out the top of the company, when I got there, was a juggling act. That was pretty much why we did all the big name signings we did. It got to the point where we bought the AMW title belt when we signed Tom, because we knew that could transition into the number two belt for us easy enough. At the same time we're trying to get the guy who had it to the point where people would buy him going after number one. From my point of view, things were messed up – but you gotta remember, Cahill's Corner was a major thing. Billy Jack and Whistler could just work with each other, with Brent not back yet those two were the biggest thing going. At the same time, that meant that someone like, say, Chris Rockwell, who didn't have that same knack facing off with Billy Jack, was a risk as champion because Ronnie just wasn't at the same level in the ring. The biggest names when I got there, Peter Michaels summed it up best. They were there to put in the sizzle. “The problem was that outside Chris, Bryan and Stuart we didn't have a whole lot of steak to go with it. That was job number one.”

Tom Gilmore leans back at his home's pine dinner table, looking thoughtful. He pushes his glasses back into position with one finger, then shrugs. “The Philly Pro character... Wow, was that ever a weird thing. “How it came about... I was working everywhere I could at the time. Larry Wood had been giving me financial advice – I don't know what it is about the smart hardcore boys and money management advice, I hear Eric Tyler used to do the same thing – so since ninety-seven started I'd gotten a job with Sam Strong, and another with AMW. I went to AMW to get a taste of gold – they told me outright I'd go to the top, something that wasn't happening any time soon with Dan or Sam. “What I found out is just how much responsibility the champion has. You have to put out a better match than anyone else had on the night. You have to do it whoever you're wrestling, whatever their skill level. Sometimes a challenger isn't there because he's the best in the ring, he's got something else, or he's a big name... whatever.” He chuckles. “He'll hate me for saying this, but Big Smack is one of those guys who makes that a heavy responsibility. He had TV exposure, he was one of the biggest names in AMW, and I had to make sure we had the best match of the night. “Or try, anyway. We did our best, but AMW had real problems, I didn't realise how bad until I was already there. “I was looking for a new place the moment I worked that out. Todd – the Hype, poor guy – and I were chatting one day, he mentioned what he was doing with Philly Pro. I showed up to a show – it was the one where Ronnie beat the crap out of Wanda – and, well, I liked what I saw. When I found out AMW was dead I picked up the phone.” -- Dangerous smiles faintly, sipping at his water again. “Tom had the character idea himself. Tom came to us. “He wasn't happy with me by the end of the conversation – I wanted him to bring the belt with him – but he was still happy enough to sign. “I thought at the time that he'd designed the character based on being the opposite of what Dan Stone had him doing – a chance to stretch his wings and do something totally different, you know? And I thought it'd catch on. “Loudmouthed, in it for fun, kind of arrogant, just likable enough that he wouldn't get too many fans mad at him. Tom timed things brilliantly; we could contrast him against Tommy, if we did it right. Show the difference between a complete ******* and the kind of guy who rubs people the wrong way but does the right thing.” -- Gilmore grins. “Yeah, I wasn't sure exactly why he was so keen. It was... This is the thing, and I feel kind of bad saying it. But I made the guy up on the spot when I was talking to Harry as a rib on Todd. “I was just describing the way Todd was backstage. The kind of prick you just about get on with because he says what people think and he's funny when he says it. I figured Harry would burst out laughing and that would be that. But he liked it, I didn't realise why until I got there. “Still, you know – that was my role, and Harry was bringing my title in and I knew I was going to hold it for a while before passing it along to whoever. “So I knew I was going to be a major player. And this was who I was going to be.” He shrugs. “One thing for it, right – do it the very best I can. I got the new tights made, practiced the speeches, and buttonholed Craig Green after a show in Ottawa to shadow him through a night on the town, see exactly how he did it. “He had this way of assuming girls would go along with it that meant they actually did. I tried to copy that.” “It worked, too,” comes a woman's voice from offscreen. Gilmore glances up in that direction, his smile suddenly natural, bright, and shiningly proud.
I never realised until putting together the above 'poster' how necessary facial hair is to succeeding in Philly Pro.
I can't believe how many similar wrestler we are going to share when I start posting my NYCW diary. Actually, that's a lie, I knew what was going to happen because it's the same region and neither of us are stupid.

If I'm gay, then Freddie Mercury was gay." Brian: "Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen? He was incredible gay." Peter: "He was not, he had a moustache, which is practically like a wedding ring." :D

NYCW has the chance to win the East Coast War utterly by cherry-picking from all the warzones. I can only assume that in 'real' Cornellverse history something stopped that. Egos? Disagreements?

Altough in '97 they seem to be holding an amazing shows month in, month out. Just with Steve Flash and Corporal Doom around, they're going to be a force to be reckoned.

But then, the only reason I haven't stolen Steve Flash is because, in the East Coast War, stealing Flash should be an event. I mean, at the time it means more than signing Cornell.

That signing accelerated caused the other promotions to fold and caused most of the big name guys to sign with DAVE. Without NYCW being able to use talent from all the other promotions, they instead got DAVE's scraps.
We will never know. At the beginning of CVerse '97 he is contracted by CGC, NOTBPW, and RPW, which means no Flash for me. At least not in the beginning.

I totally forgot about the predictions after all the NYCW talk. PPPW Maximum Championship (Formerly AMW World Heavyweight Championship) Tom Gilmore (c) vs. John McClean I've always been a huge mark for Gilmore. No sense to vote against him now. Clark Alexander vs. Rich Money Like I'm going not pick one of NYCW's staples in Rich Money Jake Harvey vs. Man Mountain Cahill SQUASH! Rick Sanders & Black Jack Marlowe vs. Travis Century & Henry Bennett I can't stand Century, he's gimmick is great but his in-ring skills always makes me disappointed I pushed him. Brent Hill vs. Horatio Dangerous w/ Jack Giedroyc I'm probably wrong, but I never like to pick wrestling avatars PPPW Tri-State Championship Whistler (c) vs. Tommy Cornell w/ Wanda Fish Whistler might retain the title, but Cornell is going to be your rock till someone steals him

Prediction Key: PPPW Maximum Championship (Formerly AMW World Heavyweight Championship) Tom Gilmore (c) vs. John McClean Tom's got a lot of potential, and while I can see a disputed win here, he can't just lose instantly. Clark Alexander vs. Rich Money Sheer quality. Jake Harvey vs. Man Mountain Cahill Jake who? Rick Sanders & Black Jack Marlowe vs. Travis Century & Henry Bennett Via dirty tricks. Brent Hill vs. Horatio Dangerous w/ Jack Giedroyc Yet more sneaky, cheaty wins! PPPW Tri-State Championship Whistler (c) vs. Tommy Cornell w/ Wanda Fish This time, however, no cheating necessary. Tommy takes the belt, and brings his Star Power to the top.
