Back in contention for the Maximum Championship. Gilmore's little prize. Tonight I go through Rick Sanders – let's face it, who hasn't? - and I become only the second man ever to hold that belt – and the first to truly deserve it. “I'd ask you to wish me luck, but honestly I don't need it. I'm one of the best competitors here, and it strikes me that this belt has a bigger brother I'll add to my collection after I've got this one.” He underhands the microphone back to Action Jackson and turns back to face the entrance ramp, limbering up before his opponent emerges... ...and Tom Gilmore arrives, sauntering down to the side of the ring. He stops by a beauty in the front row, leaning in to whisper in her ear while McClean glowers on. She nods assent to something and rises; Gilmore swings a leg over the crowd barrier and takes her seat, while she drops cheerfully into his lap. He motions to McClean to pay attention to the arrival of his opponent... PPPW Maximum Championship vs. John McClean vs. Rick Sanders Rick Sanders alt by Bull A new look for Sanders accompanied by a new entrance theme; Nothing Else Matters plays as he makes his way to ringside, the sunglasses allowing him to make any emotion disappear as he concentrates on the task at hand. There's been a lot of derogatory commentary from the IWC over Rick's recent declaration that he was going to hunker down and concentrate on pure wrestling; it seems, for the first time, that Dangerous is willing to go along with this and make Sanders into something. It makes for a solid match, with McClean's arrogant attitude early on rapidly sobered by Sanders' persistence and calculated assault. After that both men go all out, taking it to the mat, shifting to a brawl, hitting the odd high spot, and the result is one of the more satisfying to come from Sanders thus far once he finally gets the figure 4 applied to McClean, who rapidly taps while Gilmore applauds sardonically from ringside. Rick Sanders defeated John McClean and became Maximum Champion RATING: D+ vs. w/ Bryan Holmes & Deano Machino vs. Mean Jean Cattley & Jake Harvey w/ Scarah Thus far 1997 has seen a great many attempts to find shining lights for a tag team division to come. If this match is anything to go by, Holmes and Deano will not be part of that bright future, as the two sinister technicians prove unable to get onto the same page at any point. On the other side, Cattley does well while Harvey doesn't seem to be entirely happy about the match. The result is poor, as with so many of these matches, but there is promise – at least insofar as they must be able to learn from such obvious missteps. Holmes will presumably be happy with the match in any case, however, as he manages to finally end his losing streak, tagging in to immediately land the Cyclone Shock Kick on Jake Harvey. Goldworthy is wheeling some kind of cart behind him; on the cart is what appears to be a bodybag. Maverick lifts the bag into the ring as Goldworthy acquires a microphone from the announce table. “It's me again, Jimmy,” he begins. “I hear you couldn't make it this time. I guess that's not actually true, frankly – my bet is you just don't want to show up. But I know you'll hear about this even if you don't make it here, so here goes...” By now, Maverick has the bodybag unzipped and has produced a full-size dummy wearing a True Immortal T-shirt and jeans. “This is what's in your future, Jimmy. All you boys around here – pass the word.” Maverick applies the Deadly Silence to the dummy, and keeps tightening the hold. After perhaps twenty seconds the dummy's head pops free of the torso. “It's not something you can escape, Jimmy,” Floyd smiles. “We'll be waiting.” vs. Black Jack Marlowe & Eddie Chandler vs. Coleman & Ferdinand A new look here for former DaVE man Eddie Chandler, who grins at the camera as he strolls down. His work with GCG is definitely helping Coleman when things go to the mat, but his opponents here aren't willing to accommodate him; Marlowe fights like a powerhouse and a scrapper throughout, and Chandler displays a devil-may-care attitude that's a far cry from the Fabulous One fans are used to seeing – and breaks out a surprising amount of brawling offence throughout. Coleman & Ferdinand are growing ever more seasoned as a tag team, and look certain to be key players in the future, but thus far their win-loss record vacillates significantly – and this time, up against Marlowe's blunt offence and Chandler's unpredictability, they fall foul, with Chandler finishing things by adjusting out of a cobra clutch into position to put Ferdinand away with a running powerslam. Black Jack Marlowe & Eddie Chandler defeated Coleman & Ferdinand Rating: D Laudemus Virginem plays through Skid Row, which can only mean one thing – Century is back. He strides down to the ring, pointing at members of the audience and ringingly decrying them for breaking various commandments as he goes, and then rolls into the ring. As he's done in the past, he forgoes a microphone, and such is his skill that the crowd hush themselves to hear his low voice project out across the arena. “I had a dream,” he says. “Fourteen Sundays after Trinity, I had a dream, and as you should all know were you not sinners, seven is a holy number and twice seven doubly so. The Lord spoke to me, and he told me of one who had turned from him. In consequence, that one lost his glory, his pride and his joy, to one who had not. The Lord exhorted me, once I was done with the infidel Sanders – who, you will note, has since his excoriation become a champion, though he has not yet seen the Light – to take up His holy cause. I have done what I could since – I have lit candles, I have said novenas – but I find myself still needing to do more to assure this fallen one's salvation. “There is but one course, Whistler, which leads to your redemption, so long have ye tread the other path, so long have ye made of yourself a graven idol to bring others down with you in idolatry – a Sin against the Lord Your God, let us not forget! Hear me now, and hearken to your path- “Please tell me it leads right on through you,” the former champion erupts, emerging onto the stage. “Seriously. You were talking about me? When have I not done right? When have I not tried to help those who-” “THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS!” Century blasts, and while one has a microphone and the other doesn't, it's hard to say who's getting the better output. “You have offered yourself up as an alternative to the Lord, an object to be worshipped who does not preach the good word-” “Hey, come ON! This country was founded on religious freedom! You want I should go back on that?” “What other choice do you honourably have, Whistler?” Century returns, back now to that captivating whisper. “I offer myself to these idolatrous fools not as a focus for worship in myself, but as an icon by which they can better learn His divine plan. They have seen Him before him, and they knew him not!” “You know what?” Whistler frowns. “Whatever. I believe what I choose to believe. We all do. If you can't handle that, it's not like you didn't already ask to wrestle me. Let's just do this.” He starts down to the ring, and Century smiles wide. vs. Whistler vs. Travis Century This was destined to be a feud where the matches were received less well than the work on the microphone, but both men do their best. Whistler comes to the ring with an expression black as thunder, foreshadowing the end of the match rather more than the bookers of Philly Pro might help, but what they deliver is violence, a story of two competitors whose courage cannot be faulted clashing and clashing hard. Century begins his customary in-match volley of chastisement early, blasting Whistler for setting himself up as an idol, for having the gall to assume he knows what God wants from him, for giving less than a full tithe at church. Whistler, for his part, completely ignores it, getting in up close and personal. His assault becomes more and more vicious and he's certainly the man who'd take this match on a judge's decision – but in the closing moments Century's bellow of “Only God blesses America!” stops him short for just an instant; a small package and a handful of tights later, the Dark Preacher walks away with a satisfying win. Travis Century defeated Whistler Rating: D Cahill's theme plays once more, and the Man Mountain emerges, preceded as ever by Herb Stately, who this time is all smiles. “The people have spoken,” he begins. “And they have told us that finally New England has remembered where it keeps its balls. Are we not grateful for this miracle? “Better yet, the volunteer this time around is not the boy blunder Sammy Bach. We've got a treat for you here on Skid Row – we've got someone else. Step up, jack – it's time to test the Man Mountain.” Whoever they are, they seem keen as they vault the barrier and roll into the ring. Rising, they charge at Cahill, going for a clothesline - It bounces, and Cahill laughs as their hand goes to their shoulder, obviously wrenched by the unexpected impact. Cahill's hand comes up, catching them under the jaw, and they fly a good three feet before landing, pretty much outright dead as a result. And then the crowd explodes. Stately screams in frustration; Cahill, noticing Stately's attention directed behind him, turns around- Sammy Bach is perched on the turnbuckle with a steel chair! As Cahill turns to face him he launches himself, already beginning to swing the chair. The Man Mountain is driven down to one knee by the impact of the flying chair shot, and the crowd bellow approval. Encouraged, Bach rolls to his feet and wheels to continue the fight – but as he does so, Stately catches the chair from behind. Sammy turns to face him, kicks him in the gut, drops the chair, DDTs Stately instead, back up – and Cahill's there with a big boot to the face, followed by a powerbomb. Picking up the chair himself, he goes to work. “Stately!” Barber yells. “Get him out of here – or I'll give his contract to Goldworthy like he's always asking!” That brings Herb up short. Looking across at Barber, he registers how serious the man is – and manages to pull Cahill off his prey. The crowd have seldom been noisier... vs. w/ Richard Dangerous vs. Yosuke Narita w/ Kit Hatoyama Certainly this smokebreak of a match quiets them down. Nothing is really wrong with either man's performance, but at the same time, Narita is unknown and just suffered a loss, and Dangerous is something of a nonentity still, in spite of his father's best efforts. Narita spends much of the bout destroying him, encouraged by a manically-giggling Hatoyama – when she isn't shooting dirty looks at the woman Gilmore had on his lap earlier. He goes to the top rope to end it, dives, and Dangerous collapses more and ducks, leaving Narita to crash and burn. Barely aware himself of what's going on, Dangerous scrambles to cover and pick up the upset. Richard Dangerous defeated Yosuke Narita Rating: E w/ vs. Horatio Dangerous w/ Jack Giedroyc vs. Pistol Pete Hall A curiosity here; Dangerous can pull a better match from Whistler than Cornell, Cornell can reach greater heights with Hall. Pete and Dangerous trade the advantage throughout the fifteen minutes of this match, working hard at the story of Hall's shoulder, the target for much of Dangerous' offence and the source of the power behind the Pistol Whip Lariat. Hall actually connects with it at one point, but he's hurting too badly to capitalise - - and then Krusher Karloff slides under the rope and comes up charging with a Horror Hammer. Pete drops and Jay Fair calls the DQ immediately. It's no real surprise that this is the best tag match in Philly Pro to date, though it's also a comedown from the main event. Nonetheless everyone involved gave this everything, working hard at what they did. The ending was built out of a lengthy sequence in which Chris Rockwell nigh-on dismantled JD Morgan, only to be blasted in the head by a stilletto-boot-aided superkick by Wanda while Tommy occupied Jay's attention. Rockwell kicked out of Morgan's pin, made the tag, and Brent cut off JD's attempt to tag out himself with a German suplex before going up for the King of the Hill. Brent Hill & Chris Rockwell defeated Tommy Cornell & JD Morgan Rating: C- One of Phily Pro's weakest-received shows in and of itself, this card marked a shift in a number of storylines.
I'm getting in on the next round. Your swag is the coolest. :) Great show, by the way. I especially liked the Travis Century promo and match.
I do spend a disturbing amount of time figuring swag out. And Travis is a project, and I say that with all honesty. It's an incredibly easy gimmick to work with, once you've found the spring; while "This is what happens when you open your heart to cripples!" is still the line that's seen the most reaction off-thread, he's got a lot of really interesting things to be done with him. The problem, put simply, is Travis, who at this point in his career a) ain't getting any younger b) ain't that good But the goal is, eventually, to make Travis Century into the kind of guy who could become a medium-size name in a larger promotion. He's still just about got time on his side and Philly Pro has a lot of people for him to play off one way or another and learn from while he's at it.

Pistol Pete clicks a bottle of bourbon into the optic behind his bar, talking all the while. “There's a big thing in Japan,” he says. “You do not beat a big name until you've earned your stripes. It happens most of the time in the States, too, but sometimes you see a good talent just get some big wins. Hell, Ricky going over Bryan was in keeping with that. “Now you take Yosuke, Burning Thunder as he was then for Burning Hammer and just starting to be a proper name in Japan like he had been in Mexico. International Tag champion alongside Joshuya and properly established. Way I saw it at the time, he was over there on account of a sell job Stuey Ferdinand probably did, and he'd had a hell of a time of it in Philly Pro, with Horatio doing the smart thing and using him to get his own crew over. “You take Ricky Dangerous. Barely in the business a full year, worked for Hinote – which means for the competition's junior league, so far as Burning Hammer's concerned, working for Golden Canvas and losing steadily while those stripes get earned. He's definitely less important to GCG then Burning Thunder is to the Hammer and he gets the win in a company his daddy's calling shots for. “I wasn't happy about that. Horatio was giving Ricky more than he'd earned, and he and I had some strong words about that.” -- Dangerous nods slowly, conceding the point, the Jack of Diamonds held between thumb and forefinger on his left hand, spun around by the other nervously. “I saw it as...” He nods. “I wasn't doing the right thing by the company there, not in the short term. There isn't a defence for that, no justification, but what I can do, I can tell you how it came to be I made the choice. “I did a deal, coming to Philly Pro in the first place, that Ricky was part of the package, and Andy's not a stupid man. He told me he'd give Ricky the exact same contract he'd given Jean, Jay and the rest. Nine months for not very much and a chance to prove himself.” He shrugs slightly. “I believed Ricky could be good for the company, and at the same time, I knew Andy was going to be tough – and that Andy wasn't going to let me make the choice. With Billy Jack pissed with Ricky since day one, it was only looking tougher. So I gave Ricky maybe – well, really, definitely – a better chance to showcase than I gave a lot of guys. And that included the win over Narita-san. But, uh... “It's still not a defence. It's something Pete didn't know at the time, though. Back in 'eighty-nine, early eighty-nine, I was working down in Mexico for MPWF, and Yosuke was just settling there after his Canadian stint. By this stage the Japanese press was picking up on him, and there was some discussion about making sure that his home nation would be happy to hear about him winning his first title, which they were looking at doing before nineteen ninety set in.” -- The screen shifts, and softens; the slightly glitchy warmth of archive footage. A small watermark rides the lower right: FOOTAGE COURTESY OF MPWF. Excited Spanish play-by-play floods the audio along with a hot crowd. A much younger Narita, barely out of his teens but already some years pro, faces off against Horatio Dangerous, barely if at all past the prime of his career. Narita has clearly taken a beating and is moving slowly, holding his head at an odd angle. Dangerous closes in behind him, hands raised, calling for the spinning full nelson and the crowd respond with great heat as the fan-favourite American prepares to lock it on. Narita manages, somehow, to prevent him from clasping his hands and sealing it, stepping up the ropes and spinning out into an ornate and inventive tornado DDT. Dangerous impacts face-first, moves – and then falls flat again, spent. Narita hustles, one arm held gingerly against his chest, and covers. The referee drops to canvas – one – two – three! The shot dissolves, here and now, into the cover of a professional wrestling magazine of the era. Cognoscenti of the Japanese scene recognise the prestigious logo instantly, and everyone recognises the front cover; Sam Keith and Dread stand face to face, Dread's arms folded, the Burning World Championship draped over Dread's shoulder as the garish kanji hypes the August 1989 title match between the two men. The camera zooms in to a small picture tucked away in the lower right – Narita lying over Horatio Dangerous in the cover, grinning wildly, victorious, abruptly come of age in the eyes of his peers. -- Dangerous nods. “For all that it wasn't as respectful as I should have been – and I did find myself on the phone to Komine-san quite regularly through to the end of ninety-eight about my plans for the talent we shared to make up for it – Yosuke was happy to return the favour. It was everyone else who – rightly – gave me hell.”

Chris Morrssette's mouth splits open into a wide grin. “The new Philly Pro, yeah,” he says. “Phil V positioned me high when he brought me in, but I spent most of my time losing – but you don't complain when you're losing for the championship. It takes two to make a main event, and someone as smart as Phil knows that. “I knew I had dues to pay to the hardcore fans before I could think of getting the belt for myself. So I just got on with doing that. “No complaints, but at the same time DaVE was not a place where there were many guys who I could go all out with in my style. And I...” He chuckles. “Hell, enough of the people watching this probably saw The World Is Watching in 2006, the match I had with Kurt Laramee, they know I'm still not great at that. “I remember Phil got pretty mad when JD left, and then we heard that Dangerous was sniffing around a couple of the other guys. Phil was calling round people the whole time, and it got kind of heavy...” He shakes his head. -- Eddie Chandler, sat on the steps outside CGC headquarters, squints into the evening sun. “It's kind of weird now,” he says. “Back then I didn't wanna get typecast as the Fabulous Eddie schtick I was doing. “I didn't see that going anywhere, you know? That was basically designed to get my foot in the door, get me noticed, but I never... I absolutely never thought that that gimmick would get past a comedy low-level heel. With Tom Gilmore doing the fun-loving face for a new generation, I figured there was room for me to do something similar, and Tom didn't seem to have any problems getting a push. “So I really did, I figured if I was going to get some of my money from the East Coast that maybe DaVE wasn't the place to do it anymore. Whistler was there. Mike Nero was there. Travis Century. All these guys who'd made their names on the strength of their gimmick. If there was a place to learn how to remake yourself, Philly Pro was it. “That's what I figured, anyway. Later the Punisher told me that's why he'd signed up originally. But come August, I'd called Andrew Barber and started the wheels in motion. I signed on the bottom line, and I remember I wanted a new finish for this guy, I was talking ideas over with the Mav, and Phil called. “I was in the main event. Last DaVE show I worked, his new plan had me a little more important, but...” A shrug. “By that stage the deal was done. I hate to say it, but I pussed out; I let him find out I'd made the jump by reading it in the dirtsheets. Didn't answer my phone the whole week it came out.” -- Morissette considers.“Things shifted into a new gear with Attitude Adjustment that year. Six-man tag in the main event and two of us had already signed away, me and Eddie. Phil hadn't heard. “So I guess, yeah, out six months and back.” He shrugs. “The place had changed. I remember when JD left I took a look at what was going on, you know, what makes a guy with that level of good will banked burn his bridges like that. I kind of liked what I saw, but I was where I was, and I was on top – I just felt happy for him he was somewhere he was being appreciated. He'd been talking about working a couple matches with me, and I thought that could've been good down the line, y'know, establish my hardcore side first. And then he was gone. “And Whistler and Krusher were both way out of contention, but still, you know, providing a reason for the fans to tune in on the mic, where I figured they fitted. Even Ronnie was actually making headlines. “But I was where I was, you know? Coming off the Double Header I took a while to myself, stayed off the Stomper's show that month, because two straight nights with Johnny Martin is a lot to put yourself through and worse when the first one has to go to a double stop the fans won't riot over. “I was resting up and – you'll laugh – I was watching the Batman cartoons one Monday and the phone rang, y'know, picked it up, and it's Dangerous saying,” he lapses into a near-perfect imitation, “ 'I've got this hole in my main event scene and I need someone who can take it to the mat, Chris, preferably someone with a rep in Philly. You heard of anyone like that?' “For a moment I thought he was seriously asking me for a name. He had his plans and he made 'em pretty clear. It's business, you know? Dangerous had the deal that was best for Chris Rockwell.” The side of his mouth turns up slightly in acknowledgement of the echo of his old catchphrase.

The two men lock up and then go from there, with Sanders finding renewed hope in his current role that helps him drive this contest. Narita's losing streak perhaps drains some of the tension from the match, though Hatoyama does her very best to get that tension back in there – everywhere at all times, a distraction, a threat, and during one sequence when Narita's charging cross-body dumps both men outside the ring, Kit demonstrates her own credentials, running along the steel guard rail for five yards to launch into a textbook dropkick while Narita's condition attracts Jay Fair's attention. Once the match finally returns to the ring, however, Sanders manages to regain control and keeps Narita trapped dead centre, away from the ropes that a super junior can use so well, unable to pick up speed, and eventually the figure-four leg lock finishes it. In opposition, the two CGC men work hard against them, with both men giving punishment as well as they take it; and, ultimately, that leaves only one real difference to decide the match, with the two future tag legends drawing on a growing sense of tag continuity that allows them to slowly win the upper hand. Trapped in enemy territory, the Natural finds himself in Stuart Ferdinand's butterfly lock. With no hope of a rescue, he concedes the match. It's clear he's trying to persuade Floyd of something and, as he ushers him to the announce table, it becomes clear what as they come in range of the microphone. “...Gilmore's still undefeated, that's what it comes back to, man. As much as he doesn't concentrate, as much as he can't focus on our craft, he's yet to be beaten. An unbeaten former champion, man; and you're going to see me, right up close, take him apart, yeah? That's got to be worth a spot...” “John,” Goldworthy returns. “I appreciate your passion for the business – evening, Jackson, how goes it? - but the fact remains that Gold Guarantees can make the promises we make because I sign only the best. “Now you're right; Tom Gilmore does not have what it takes to become a legend, to truly make his name in professional wrestling. He doesn't have the dedication. He doesn't have the understanding that you and I have. So beating him tonight – it might get you onto a correctly Guaranteed contract. And it might not. I'll be watching though, John. Show us what you have.” McClean doesn't seem too happy with that evasive answer, and opens his mouth to continue – but as he does so, Insomnia kicks in over the sound system and Tom Gilmore explodes into his usual entrance, the crowd loving to see him... vs. John McClean vs. Tom Gilmore Goldworthy talks up a storm on commentary as the two men get to it. With the 'respect' based storylines his clients are working along at present, he finds himself in position to open up on Gilmore, his distractions, his chat-up lines, the showboating – everything Gilmore does that gets the fans behind him and gets into the head of his opponent. And McClean's infuriated, and clearly so, as the two men do battle, with the result that both men fail to capitalise through either hedonism or fury. McClean has two or three shots at putting Gilmore away, but chooses to inflict more pain; finally, a running lariat is blocked and turned into the World Shatters to continue Gilmore's lucky streak. Afterward, the exhausted and brutalised Gilmore is the second to his feet... Immediately, shouting abuse, frothing at the mouth, barely coherent as he rants about how wrestling has been 'infected' by 'touchdown celebration bull****' he yanks him back to his feet, sets him up, and drops him with a discus punch. Scooping him up again, still ranting, he lifts him up and settles him for a tombstone piledriver - - Hatoyama is in the ring suddenly and jumps into the setup with a cross-body, toppling the stance with McClean underneath. Acting quickly and obviously worried about the psychotic McClean, she tugs the unconscious Gilmore out of the ring, scoops him into a fireman's cradle, and runs back up the ramp, much to the approval of the fans. It looks, toward the end, as if they'll get their wish, as Cox gets set on a dazed Maverick; Goldworthy hops onto the apron, drawing Jay's attention, and as Cox scoops Maverick up the Silent Threat jerks his head back, a low blow headbutt that topples Jimmy before he can properly lock for the Driver. Maverick flips forward, landing on his feet, spins, and locks in the Deadly Silence. From then on the end is inevitable. With ten minutes in the contest, Morgan dominates heavily, setting the pace only to have to cope with the speed and know-how the Hype can bring to these contests as he refuses to be contained, keeping coming back, watching Wanda at all times to stay on the far side of the ring, having learned that lesson. And that's much of the story of the match, though the end sees Morgan miss with a charge, slamming into the turnbuckles, staggered, and then hit with an Aitch-Bomb before he can recover. The Hype defeated JD Morgan Rating: D The next man out is instantly recognisable to any Philly Pro fan, the icon that is Whistler. “Evening,” he says. “I'm not going to take up much of your time tonight – I'm just here to mention something about what seems to be going on here. “Now, Travis Century, you've been taking shortcuts every match you've wrestled this year, win or lose. And last time we wrestled, you did that against me. I don't take kindly to that – haven't found myself needin' to break the rules yet, and here we are with me a two-time champion and you never having held a title. “I don't think it takes much to see the difference there. So you'll understand if I ain't happy with what happened. Come the rematch – and there will be a rematch – I don't wanna see that. And I will be retaliating if I do. “So that's point one. Point two, your whole mad-on about the way I conduct my bnsiness – the Bible I read, the church I was brought up in, they seem to have a difference of opinion with you, and ain't no crime in that. I don't wanna hear it, understand? I don't reckon these fans do, neither.” He drops the microphone and leaves; Travis Century meets him on his way out, smirking, but makes his way to the announce table. Nero's Strap Challenge vs. Professor Nero vs. Pistol Pete Hall Two legends here, and two legends who've not fought before – but who behave, the whole match, like they know each other of old. Maybe it's chemistry, maybe it's just long familiarity with the matches the other has had – whatever the case, it's a gift to the fans, and practically from the opening bell the pace picks up beyond what we've seen tonight, despite the obvious talent disparity caused by Nero's age. Century seems to be here to condemn Hall as an 'arrogant resurgence of the wrong spirit', criticising both his wrestling and his recent entry into business with his bar. Nero takes full advantage of the lawlessness of a strap match, using his wrist tape to choke, wielding the cane, tripping and whipping with the strap. But despite all that, Hall endures, solid and stoic, and after a little while he starts coiling the strap around his arm, drawing Nero closer and closer until he can't escape the big man. Hall has taken Cornell to his limit recently and he unloads here, battering and bloodying Nero. And then... Troy alt by Nachtfalter Barely recognisable as XFW's wholesome All-American, Troy Tornado is in the ring with a tyre iron, bringing it down into the back of Hall's knee – the one so recently recovered. Tornado continues the assault, with Fair unable to do anything under the rules of the Strap Challenge, and when Hall has collapsed, Tornado lifts the near-unconscious Nero onto his shoulders, carrying him around the four turnbuckles for the upset victory. Professor Nero defeated Pistol Pete Hall Rating: C- Nero rouses himself seemingly in response to the sound of his music, being carried by Troy over to the announce table. “Judgement Day is coming,” he tells Century, before spitting blood onto the table. “Will you be ready?” He nods, and Tornado responds, helping the legend up the ramp. The banjo-styled electric guitar wails again, and Stately and Cahill appear to fill the gap left by Nero. This time, however, they stop atop the ramp. “Sammy Bach,” Stately announces as Cahill snarls behind him in response to the name. “The Boy Wonder, you call yourself. And you must be a boy – not a man – to continue so unwisely to try to beat this mountain of a man. To be that naïve, that idealistic, that unwise... that's the mark of a child.” A small smile is offered. “I know you're out there somewhere, waiting for Cahill's Corner. Waiting to try to prove yourself. “Waiting to dream the impossible dream. But tonight, Sammy, there will be no Cahill's Corner. Tonight is not your night. “Your night will never come – but! In two weeks, Cahill's Corner will welcome you to your final challenge. We make you this one offer. Survive six minutes with the Man Mountain... and perhaps there's room for you in Philly Pro. Perhaps I'll offer you a contract. “That should be enough to get you to show up, with your boyish dreams, your foolish enthusiasm. What it won't be is enough to keep you alive. So have your mom and dad get your measurements to the undertakers before you show up, son.” It's clear that Bach's will to win has grabbed the crowd by now; the hatred rained down on Stately is immense. vs. w/ Chris Rockwell vs. Horatio Dangerous w/ Jack Giedroyc The rematch, now, from Rockwell's last battle in his previous run, back in January. And Rockwell seems hungry to wipe that stain off his record. Dangerous goes with him as best he can, but it rapidly becomes clear that this match will only end one way; Rockwell is in control. He has a counter for every spot Dangerous tries – with Barber and Jackson playing up the enormous scouting advantage Rockwell possesses due to Dangerous' long career – and is using a number of innovative new offensive strategies himself. It's a good, entertaining contest, with much of the suspense in Dangerous' durability as he keeps on kicking out – and then, with clear intent, Dangerous whips Rockwell into Fair. Giedroyc is into the ring immediately with a Crashing On; Rockwell, shocked by the sudden assault, takes it badly. Dangerous capitalises and the two men run through a battery of double-team moves, checking to see if Fair's up after each one. Finally hitting a spike piledriver, Dangerous rolls over to make the cover as Fair comes to his senses, allowing the British Invasion the somewhat dubious win. Horatio Dangerous defeated Chris Rockwell Rating: C- PPPW Tri-State Championship w/ vs. Tommy Cornell © w/ Wanda Fish vs Brent Hill There isn't a great deal of time here, and that's probably why this doesn't quite hit the heights the two men are capable of. Nonetheless Hill and Cornell work through a fantastic quarter-hour that shifts gear on a number of occasions, neither man clearly in control for quite some time. By this stage everyone is very conscious that Hill has become Cornell's most regular and most dangerous opponent, and the fans erupt every time he has the advantage. They build to the biggest finish yet; Cornell tries for the Rough Ride, but Hill lands clear behind him, going for the Complete Package – which Cornell manages, somehow, to twist into the Guilt Trip. And that, ultimately, is what makes the difference, with Hill locked in excruciating pain, refusing to submit, until eventually it just reaches the point of too much. Tommy Cornell defeated Brent Hill Rating: C A show of definite ups and downs, Double or Nothing wasn't the gamble its name suggests – but was still perhaps weaker than Dangerous would have hoped. XFW gave me the Immortal Driver. “What Philly Pro gave me, though – Wanda and Kit in 5 Star, Ricky, Pete, Bryan in Golden, Coleman in the Hinote Dojo, Stuey in Burning Hammer – Philly Pro gave me a lot of colleagues who were making names for themselves in Japan. “Bryan got me and Ricky both our shots in GCG, and that led to us doing the opening tag team bit every so often. I used to ask Dangerous about trying that in Philly Pro sometime, actually helping get a tag team division together. I didn't realise, then, that he was saving Ricky as a regular tag guy for when his brother showed up. “So Bryan was a big break. But what really got me on the map was that first match I had with Mav. The time we're talking about, that match was the best I ever had. “A little before that PGHDub really hit the big time. They started to put together some exclusive deals. I kind of thought that was cool, but figured it didn't matter to me. I had the Golden gig, wasn't like I knew anyone there. -- Kit Hatoyama is reclining in a hammock as the camera greets her, jeans and T-Shirt as her outfit. The hammock itself is a balcony over a sunny slope; she seems perfectly contented there. “When Philly Pro first called me,” she begins, in the near-flawless English she eventually reached, “I wasn't particularly interested. The boss sent me a bunch of their shows on tape, though, and I watched a few of them, to get the feel of what they were doing. I liked Jim's match with Mav, the one where he won near the start of that whole thing. I really liked the Driver. “At the time I was seeing Miwa, and I remember I was watching the tape one time when he came in and saw it.” -- Cox continues smoothly. “He thought the Driver had real potential, he bugged Kumasaka to watch the tape, a few months later I got a call. “They wanted me, and they wanted me on an exclusive deal. Someone they could develop. “Regular money, at that time, was kind of a rarity. You had to be a big fish in a small pond, minimum, to get that kind of treatment. I think in Philly Pro it was just Tommy and Brent, not even JD, so that gives you an idea. “I had a chance to shortcut through that. You gotta believe I took it.” He grins. “What I missed out on, though... I was really looking forward to finishing the angle with Mav and doing what we were supposed to do with Billy Jack.” -- Barber smiles reminiscently. “The angle we eventually did to reimagine Krusher Karloff went through at least six or seven different phases before we got to it,” he says. “I say at least; I know I heard that many, and I get the feeling Horatio tried other ideas out that never reached me. For quite some time it was meant to come out of the Maverick/Cox feud, and that only changed when he left before we could finish it. “It was never meant to be the man who ended up doing it, I'll say that. I'm still not sure his character fitted what was needed at the time, but we'd had this thing in mind since Horatio came in and it just kept being moved back as we positioned on setup after another. Getting Billy Jack and whoever was planned to do it free enough that we could make it the big thing we wanted to at the same time... it was tricky.” He shrugs. “But, yeah, Jimmy was meant to do that.”
