AWA: Survival of the Fittest

Recommended Posts

I know I just posted the ROH Dynasty I was working on this Saturday but I have recently come across my roommates DVR recordings of the AWA TV Show (Which was god-awful). I then downloaded the 1989 No Holds Barred Mod and think that this is a huge challenge... take the AWA from a dying promotion to the top promotion in the world. -----The AWA was at one point in time considered one of the top wrestling promotions in the world. Fast forward to September 1989 and the AWA is very clearly hurting. Verne Gagne has yet to get with the times and create new stars and his very traditional product is starting to become extremely stale as the WWF and the NWA have been producing great shows with a more new school feel to attract new viewers. The first nail in the AWA coffin has been nailed in so to speak as ESPN has taken a whole hour off of the AWA Superstars Time Slot leaving the AWA with only 1 Hour of Professional Wrestling on Television every week and moved the time slot/day from Prime Time Monday to Late Evening Thursday. Gagne (After years of refusing to do so) has finally appointed people other than himself or his close friends/family as the booker. Verne Gagne has appointed young upstart commentator Eric Bischoff as the official AWA Talent Scout and Booker. Although Gagne and company are strongly against young talent and people not in there clique being in charge it is very clear that things must be done to survive and become a major player yet again in the United States wrestling scene. -----Effective the first Monday of September 1989 Eric Bischoff took complete control of the AWA and held the first locker room meeting with all of the AWA Superstars. Many of the veterans in the locker room seemed weary of what Bischoff had to say but were willing to listen after being on the bottom of the wrestling world for a few years now. The key parts of this meeting were...

Jake Milliman and Jerry Blackwell's contracts have been terminated. Bischoff feels as though neither man has that "Star Quality" the AWA needs right now and neither man offers anything ringwork wise. Biscoff warned the Locker Room that it could happen to anyone in the locker room and told everyone that the company's new direction is to be taken very seriously.
The AWA All Star Wrestling show will no longer be taped from Las Vegas. From now on every Thursday the AWA will be on the road.
Bischoff has talked Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat out of his hiatus from Professional Wrestling. Although there is no guarantee that he will be in the AWA for long it should be noted that he is here and it should be taken advantage of.
A few wrestlers will be repackaged. The Trooper has been taken off of TV for two months to get into good shape for a gimmick agreed upon by Bischoff, Verne Gagne and The Trooper himself. Scott Norton will be dropping his "Lumberjack" gimmick immidiately and is scheduled to debut a newer attitude as soon as the next AWA Superstars TV Show.
Harley Race has been taken out of active competition and put into a managerial role with one of Bischoff's new young signings.
Diamond Dallas Page would like to start working in an in-ring role whenever the time comes. Although he isn't completely comfortable many people agree that his presence and charisma could make him into a big star one day.
Thanks sir! It is going to be very hard. I am so used to writing shows with that new school kind of feel. I however think that this will be a very rewarding game as its obviously a HUGE challenge to take AWA from stuck in the 70s old skool rassling to a 1990 Wrestling Megapower!

Gagne climbed to the Top Rope and came off with a Flying Body Splash... Gagne however hit a brick wall on the move and it didn't even knock the big man Scott Norton off of his feet. Larry talks about how he is the greatest champion the AWA has ever had and how he is sick and tired of people asking him if he is scared of "Ricky Steamboat". He tells the AWA Fans that Ricky Steamboat couldn't beat Larry Zybysko under any circumstances and that he is here to stay as the champion. Larry Zybysko continues to talk until... This enabled Larry Z to roll Snuka up and get the win at around the 9 minute mark. After the match Larry Zybysko grabs the AWA World Title and waits for Snuka to get up. Snuka gets up and is instantly leveled by the World Title. Zybysko then begins stomping on Snuka until... RICKY STEAMBOAT arrives in wrestling gear from the back. Steamboat runs Larry Z off and grabs a microphone. Steamboat asks Larry Z for a Title match... anywhere and anytime. Larry Z gets one as well and tells Steamboat he has to earn it. Steamboat tells Zybysko that is fine and he has permission from the AWA Board of Directors to wrestle here tonight... he tells Larry Z to find a opponent for him and he will earn his AWA Title Shot! However many of the younger talents feel that Bischoff will be able to reach out to a whole new market with his new booking style. In order to spice up the entire roster I have brought in a lot of guys whose careers may have been winding down but they can still add something to the show (Dynamite, Ricky Steamboat and a soon to debut star). Its not the most ideal move but I need some people who can work because a vast majority of the AWA Roster suck.

Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond held the AWA Tag Team Championships above there head as AWA All Star Wrestling went to a commercial break. After the commercial break Ricky Steamboat comes out to the ring for the Tag Team match and begins talking. He admits that he hasn't "earned" a AWA Title match in the same way that alot of people do but he has wrestled all over the world and held gold all over the world and is tons more qualified for the AWA Title than someone like Larry Zybysko. He tells the fans that when the time comes for him to wrestle Larry Z he wil give everything he has for them (Steamboat is the ultimate babyface). Steamboat says he could care less about who Larry Z has brought for his partner because he has the ultimate partner... a friend of his from way back. JIMMY SUPERFLY SNUKA! Snuka comes out to a good pop to lead into the Main Event! Ricky Steamboat and Jimmy Snuka vs. Larry Zybysko and Nikita Koloff Very good technically sound Tag Team Match between the four best wrestlers in the AWA. Nikita Koloff played the big powerhouse Russian perfectly, Zybysko played the Heel Champion who always finds a way to win great, Steamboat was the babyface who got the crap beat out of him throughout the match until Snuka got tagged in. Snuka came in and took out Larry Z and Koloff with quick strikes. Larry Z however was able to take advantage of Snuka being to fast by having Snuka do a corner splash right into an exposed steel turnbuckle. A Shoulder Breaker (Worst Finish of the Night Award to Mr. Zybysko) to Snuka later and Zybysko gets the win at 11:46! After the match ends a brawl erupts between the four men. On accident Larry Z hits Nikita Koloff with a chair instead of Ricky Steamboat. Steamboat then took out Zybysko with a Suplex while Superfly ascended to the Top Rope and then hit Zybysko with the Superfly Splash. After the match Steamboat gets on the microphone and says he has had it with Larry Z's constant cheating and next week he will be taking the AWA World Heavyweight Championship off of Larry Zybysko!

End of September Week 2 AWA Update: -----The AWA Locker Room was said to be slightly warmer to Eric Bischoff being in charge this week as the fans at the AWA Show in California this week were very "alive" during the show and seemed to enjoy the entire wrestling show. A much smoother week for the AWA with the following things happening.

Candi Devine and Col. Debeers were terminated from the AWA by Eric Bischoff. Candi Devine had a backstage altercation with Ricky Steamboat during the first week of Bischoff's run and an altercation with Dynamite Kid during week two. Both men are looked at as Locker Room Leaders (Even in there short time with AWA) and Devine was given the boot because of this. Debeers threw a fit about putting Lynn over (Even though Lynn didn't pin Debeers) and didn't like the way that he was being used in the AWA.
Steve Austin and Mark Callous of USWA/WCCW have been signed to contracts and are expected to debut on Television soon. It is still unclear which one will be working with Harley Race.
