The Bus
I didn't see a thread for this upcoming game and decided it's time to start the hype. So at midnight(GMT) on Sunday the demo comes out and I'm sure to try it out. But there is no question about me buying the game as that is surely going to happen. This has been a great series and now there is going to be 3D match engine for the first time and some other improvements. I've played it for about a decade when it was still called Championship Manager. Anyone else already interested in it? For further information look for www.sigames.com and their active forums.
wilts
You know there still is Champ Man, so that could be confusing to some readers...

I just took it for granted. :) "Football Manager" continues the reign that started with the name "Championship Manager". Did they sell the name or move to a new name due to new publisher or something? I just can't remember it now...
Slim Jim
Eidos and SI split a few years ago. Eidos kept the name, SI kept the game. SI renamed it Football Manager and Eidos tried to create a new game to rival it but so far have done a fairly shoddy job. Apparently they are improving pretty quickly but I tried the demo of last year's and it was awful in comparison to FM.
wilts
I have both Champ Man 08 and FM 08 and have to say that I play Champ Man more than FM. I love all the features of FM, like the player interaction, feeder clubs and the little things that CM is missing, but I just find CM more enjoyable to play. Not sure why, maybe because it is just easier to get the players that I want and you tend to start off with a better budget. I am really looking forward to both of the games this year, and I am also curious to see how far FIFA Manager progresses from the 08 game.
The Bus
Have you Wilts taken a look at the new things in FM 09? If so what is your opinion on them? I think this years edition is going to be great if the match engine doesn't have too many flaws in it, but they've said it should be ok as they have tested it more than ever. As the 3D gets improvements as well as the press conferences and assistant manager feedback, I believe FM 2010 will be simply awesome. I don't think they will get big improvements through patches. I'm not too optimistic that all the new features would work flawless straight away.
The Bus
So there is again new footage of the 3D match engine: http://uploads.shortlist.com/videos/FM09CLIPHQ.mov IMO it looks great. Can't wait for Sunday and futhermore can't wait for the 14th of November when the full game is due for release!
BlueStar
FM07 was great, FM08 was unplayable till the second patch and is still pretty bigridden. I'm steering clear of 09 - I'm not interested in 3D (or 2D) simulated games anyway. And even if I'm buying it, I'll wait till they patched it properly. FM08 was a rip-off IMHO. Capelli King
yeah i liked FM07 more for some reason. 08 was not an improvement really, basically they just made some minor changes and none really improved anything. I think that 09 will have even less changes besides the 3D, i heared that they were spending more time on the online variant (live i think it is called)
LFC_chris
Anyone else played the demo yet then? Apart from there being a stupid number of injuries I think it's really good. I like the 3D match engine more than I thought I would and the press conferences are a nice touch.

Little knocks are on proper level, but those month+ long injuries occur too often. Press conferences are really cool! 3D has some work to do to be great. The assistant manager feedback is great! iMac
I am a big fan of the series but I usually wait until closer to christmas when there has been a patch released before buying it.
sebsy
I got in to the habit of waiting until February to buy it once the second patch was out, there are always 2 patches, then with FM08 I didn't even want to buy it but couldn't resist but from the reaction FM09 is getting on the official forums this will be the first one I don't buy since CM4. Only ones I've bought are CM00/01 then FM's 05-08. Reaction to the demo is poor though. 3d engine wouldn't really be a problem as you can switch it off but it's the problems that have been there for the past few years and never get fixed like the transfer system, tactics etc. They should spend a year ironing everything out as opposed to coming up with bigger and newer features whilst ignoring the problems with the features that have been there for years. Slim Jim
The transfer system has been completely re-written and aside from a couple of players being transfer listed that probably shouldn't be [Marcelo at Real Madrid off the top of my head] it is a LOT better, especially when it comes to loaning players. I haven't been using the 3D match view, not because I've found anything wrong with it, I just really like the 2D pitch. I'm not sure why they have changed the way arrows work on the tactics screen. Seems that they just do what the Forward Runs option does anyway and taken away the ability to, for example, make wide players cut inside. Press conferences are a fun addition, could do with a little bit of tweaking but on the whole work really well. Assistant Manager feedback is great, once I stopped trying to fix every little error he highlighted. Have to remember that he isn't perfect and that I can't cover all bases all the time; making those tactical decisions is kind of the whole point of being the manager in the first place. The number of injuries is just killing my enjoyment though. One silver lining is that it's making me give younger players a chance and more of the squad players but that is such a thin lining because I'd do that at the right times anyway. Apparently it'll be fixed in the patch released on the 14th when the main game is out, still very frustrating in the meantime... and maybe I'm being paranoid but it's a LOT worse for me than for other teams :p A few stats I find questionable but I usually tinker around with the database anyway so that's no big deal really; everyone has their own view. Overall it is a definite step up from FM08 in terms of features but I'm just not quite accustomed to them all yet. The new rating system [with decimal points] is really throwing me off for some reason. It just doesn't feel right yet :p

Offer to clubs feature works in a better way. AI now shortlists more than one player for a need.
I haven't been using the 3D match view, not because I've found anything wrong with it, I just really like the 2D pitch.
3D looks a bit clumsy and I might consider using 2D because it is so good. I like the change. With some thought on player instructions and by teaching some preferred moves one can get the player to work as wanted.
Press conferences are a fun addition, could do with a little bit of tweaking but on the whole work really well.
They do seem great! With this very limited time that I've played there isn't too much repetition IMO, that people were afraid of.
Assistant Manager feedback is great, once I stopped trying to fix every little error he highlighted. I also didn't close down so much when there was low player conditions. And what happened? Everything is just where it's supposed to be in the amount of injuries. SI did release a comment that they will look into this subject, but also mentioned about the low condition=more injuries. There is no sure word whether this will patched in the first patch, because it might be how they want it to be. Just like the new tactics, there is more to figure out for the player to succeed in this years version. Mtm2k6
FM2005 ftw! Still play this regularly, great game, built an unstoppable Chelsea squad, not out of their budget (although that helps) but some great young players (Maxi Lopez, Lebohang Mokoena)
James Casey
My 2006 game was the one to end all - titles, European cups, domestic cups, a World Cup (with England!). I got into the habit of picking up good youngsters and then, at the age of 19 or 20, selling them on with a buy back clause so they could develop elsewhere, leaving me the option of bringing them back for 2M or so... Or how about my 97/98 game where I played nine seasons, in the last seven of which I won the Premiership, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League, Charity Shield, World Club Cup and Intercontinental Cup? Nine seasons winning every trophy I entered. I've just added the game to my laptop - I was distraught when i accidentally saved over that game :( Now I have a new laptop, I've picked up '09 but haven't got much beyond pre-season yet. Loaned out a lot of youngsters, though - that seems a lot easier than it used to be.

Nedew
would you recommend Champ Man or FM 09 or FM Live?
FM Live is a completely different type of game to the other two, it's built on the same engine as FM but that's about it. FM Live is basically for people who really dig the tactical side of the main FM series. I would throw all my weight behind FM09, Sports Interactive made all the old Champ Manager's until they just took all but the name with them to SEGA to make FM05 and onwards. Most definitely the top rated in terms of both fans and critical acclaim.

I think it's 40% or so. So that's why your 16 year old Latvian's aren't making much progress on getting them.
