I need a Brit!

Astil

Oh, silly me! I've started writing a story and it is currently set in Britan. However I know next to nothing about British culture. So I can either change the location to America ... or a kind person from England can help me with some research. Any takers?

I really don't mean to tear you down, not my goal... but there are some seriuos flaws. How do you start to write a story where you know nothing of the basics like where it is set? The first thing creative writers do is research their topics. Spend hours upon hours getting the smallest details as correct as they can make them (and ultimately still have some errors in the final product). If I were you, I would change the location to America, or do the time consuming research myself so that you acquire the knowledge needed to write this and future stories.

I worked HARD to research the country of Norway in order to create the persona of "The Alpha Norwegian" for Bam Bam Johansson. I have it on good account that the vast majority of the Norwegian people act much like my version of Bam Bam. Okay, serious time... It's true, you need to do some research, which having an actual Brit around would help with. If its what you want (instead of changing it to America), do the work and research required. And to Mr. ACCBiggz... my gut tells me Astil put it in England because... Astil wants the story to take place in England. I know people should "write what they know", but sometimes I get bored with what I know. And if that's all the case Astil, don't cop out and just set it in America for the sake of making it easier on yourself. There has to be some reason the story takes place in England, why risk ruining that by sticking an English story in the the USA?
Write what you know Failing that, make it up entirely and at least then it will be funny.
So you're saying Norwegians DON'T down Bull Shark Testosterone like tic tacs? Because I happen to know that may or may not be true, and if you laugh then you're offending the entire great nation of Norway.

To: ACCBiggz Yeah, I know it'd be easier to do the story set in America. I have done some legwork, but felt the small details could be filled in by asking a few quick questions. If none respondes, then I'd probably stick to America. In fact I may even stick to America after all my research is done. No harm keeping options open is my motto. or one of them. To: Comradebot You also did a lot of research on the art of being alpha. To all who respond, this is for a story I'll post on the internet, not one of my trying to get published novel type stories. What I know is a boring mundane life that would not translate to story form, so I've always thrown that out the window  In fact 2 of my main charactors are female. Also: I've found the best research for stories is personal interview.

And in my opinion, before starting he should do the research required and then proceed with the actual writing. It's a process.

Well... Britain has many different cultures, depending on where you live. Remember, Britain is made up of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and saying "British culture" and then saying "someone from England" could cause offense, but that's a different matter. :p Anyway, since this is a story, I'd assume you want to know about things like charactarisation. Well, if you narrow it down a bit (ie, whereabouts in Britain your story is set, or where the character comes from) then it would probably be easier for people to help you. Different parts of Britain have different accents, customs and general ways of life. So, maybe decide where this story is set and then it'll be easier for people to help you. :)
Possibly, they are a bit loopy south of the border.
Ever since bloody Braveheart, you friggin scots have had such a stick up your ass. ;) for those easily offended, this was what is called a joke, even if it was a very poor one... Haggis in McDonalds? Remind me to go to Burger King next time I'm in Scotland. And James Bond, getting old? You have to be kidding right? That bastard will never get old or die, unfortunately, although hope does live on in my heart. And like our beers warm? Might just be me but don't particularly have a warm spot for beer, unless you are including lagers. Now that the festive season is upon us though, I have rekindled my love of Advocaat and Lemonade, otherwise known as a snowball. So are we acually expecting to get some book/research related questions, or ...?

In America this is the time we would start filing for college and enjoying senior year and such not. HOw's that sort of thing go down in England?
