wilts Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 What exactly are all these mafia threads all about? Popped in quickly to a couple to check them out, but they make no sense to me... Anyone care to clear it up for us dunces?
theoutlaw321 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008
What exactly are all these mafia threads all about? Popped in quickly to a couple to check them out, but they make no sense to me... Anyone care to clear it up for us dunces?
Online forum game. Where an informed minority(mafia) tries to beat an uniformed majority(Town.) Many variations of the game. Most on this site are theme based.
theoutlaw321 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Basic rule set:
READ OR DIE HOW TO PLAY: - All of you will be PM’d a role and your alignment. The objective is to eliminate all members of the opposing alignment from the game. - Each player has been given a role with their own special ability. Your PM will explain what it does, if you are meant to know. You don’t have to reveal what your role is to the other players, nor will I do so in my updates. Then again there is nothing to stop you, so if you feel that it may help prove your innocence, go ahead – just keep in mind that this could also backfire and help the mafia. In other words, claim at your own risk. Likewise, you may lie about who you are if you wish. If you want to use your abilities, PM me. DO NOT post it in the thread. - The game is split into two phases, Day and Night. The game begins during the day, and all players (Mafia and Townie alike) post in the thread, deciding who to kill off. Lynching is the only way for the Townies to kill the Mafia, so be sure to examine voting patterns of your fellow players. I might also provide clues in the death write ups, but over-reliance on those is ill-advised as some may be traps. Day phases will last 48 hours or until a consensus is reached. Night phases will last 24 hours but may end earlier if all night activities are concluded. - All voting and discussion is to occur within the thread. Town players may discuss who they think is Mafia, and Mafia members should be trying to bluff/convince/blend in, and generally try not to get voted for. To vote, post Vote: Username (MUST BE IN BOLD!). You can also change your vote, by typing Change Vote: Username (AGAIN BOLDED!). You can also change your vote to nobody by typing Change Vote: No Vote (IN BOLD!). You can also choose to vote for No Lynching by using Vote: No Lynch (yeah... BOLDED!), meaning you actively vote to not lynch anyone during that day phase rather than passively not voting at all. You must post in the thread for your vote to be counted. You do not have to vote if you do not wish to. - A Day Phase is over whenever a person obtains more than 50% of the vote (and is lynched) or when the 48 hours run out. If no majority vote has been reached by the time the day phase expires, a no lynch will be declared. Once a person dies, I will reveal their alignment and role. - Night falls after somebody is executed or a no lynch is achieved. During this time, the Mafia can discuss who they want to kill next (using whatever form of communication appeals to them). Abilities are also used during this time. To use an ability, PM both mods (djthefunkchris / Crychon), and we'll PM you the outcome of the ability the following day phase. If it is something serious like somebody getting killed, I will update it in the thread. If possible though, try to PM me what you want to do as soon after night falls as possible to keep things moving along at a quick pace. - Night ends once I post who gets killed, and the cycle repeats itself. The Town players win if all Mafia members are dead, and vice versa. Remember, this is a team effort, so if you think sacrificing someone may help your cause, go ahead. -Remember, some roles such as investigators and protectors are more valuable to the town – so try to keep them alive! RULES: - I know it’s the Dog Pound, but try not to postwhore in the thread anyway. Feel free to trash talk, accuse, call out other players if you want, but if you’re going to vote, at least state some kind of reason as to why you’re doing so. - Though I can’t force you to post, I’d love to see active participation. I would advise everyone try to check in with this game at least once a day. Things move fast and you can fall behind pretty easily. - Once you are dead, you stay dead, and may not participate until the game is over. This includes notes found on your corpse, cryptic messages from the dead, etc, etc. You may also not advise the remaining players on what to do – besides, to prevent cheating, I will not provide the dead with any additional information than they would get if they were still alive. Of course, I’m willing to listen to your theories as to what’s going on. Likewise, I'd appreciate if those not taking part try not help those playing, though general comments on how things are going would be welcomed in the Sign Up Thread. - Unless your role PM specifically states otherwise, all players may not discuss game plan, your role, or alignment outside the thread. Of course, I can’t enforce this, but I believe secretly revealing information amongst each other would spoil the game, so try not to do it. - Players are not allowed to edit their posts in this thread at all, as it allows for those who make mistakes to remove all of the evidence without any effort. Since I can't enforce this, I strongly encourage all players to scrutinize any posts they notice that have been edited. -Players are not allowed to cut and paste anything straight from the Role PM except the Role title. No cutting and pasting from the body of the PM. You can paraphrase what your Role PM says but that is all. -Please play your role/alignment and play to win. We will be strict about this, so please don't make us enforce it. -Talking about your role after death or to those who have died IS NOT allowed. -Not everything is as it seems. If something unexpected happens, feel free to question it to me in private, and if I can, I'll answer. We reserve the right to mod kill if we find out that any of these rules have been broken. Please remember that you are not the only one playing this game, so don't ruin it for everyone else! The mods for this game are ??? and ???. All PMs regarding abilities, questions or anything else should be sent to Both of us. If you fail to communicate your information then I will go on what I have. You have be warned! Let us all keep in mind that this is a game and should be an enjoyable experience. Do Not Post Until After The Opening Write Up Has Been Posted!
wilts Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 OK, thanks for the info. I think I'll stear clear of them, not sure I fully understand.
djthefunkchris Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008
What exactly are all these mafia threads all about? Popped in quickly to a couple to check them out, but they make no sense to me... Anyone care to clear it up for us dunces?
It's kind of like old tabletop/dice playing rpg games, only the turns are split into day and night phases. The referee is the MOD, and they tell you what happened during these phases as a direct result of what everyone desired to do (by secret PM to the referee, ussually). People are not allowed to talk outside of the game thread (unless grouped). We haven't really had any serious problems with people cheating... mainly because whenever there has been an incident, they did it without realising. Any mafia games first day phase (the start of the thread) will help you understand the game quite a bit better... Just realise that most of the conversations are between people that have no clue what the other guy is. People will say "Hey, lets just lynch XXX" and that kind of starts someone participating (after all, you don't want to get lynched without having a chance to defend yourself). The rules and all are great, but honestly, it didn't help me when I was trying to figure it out. The first game I don't think I really grasped at first, but certain things I learned from that game, I still hold onto whenever I have time to play another. The referee gives everyone a "Role PM"... Something like "Your Joe Gunn, mafia alligned gunman" or perhaps "Your Joe Gunn, town alligned paranoid gun holder". With this is an explaination of what you can do "You are the mafia's hitman, at night you must PM me of someone to take out. If you don't, I will randomly pick someone for you. Your mafia associates are "X", "Y", and "Z". You may talk to them outside the thread any way you guys are able." or "As the PGO (paranoid gun owner), you will shoot anyone that comes to your house.

I think I'll stear clear of them, not sure I fully understand.
The best way to learn is to sign up for one and see if you get it. If you don't and/or don't like it, then no harm done. There is a large one and a small one going on at the same time. I suggest the small ones to start. They don't move as fast(ie not as much post whoring) as the larger ones. That is if you are interested. And you are at least curious as you are the one that posed the question.
mistaken Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I think i cut my teeth on the lake side game, and have an adequate understanding of the game. But I really think a short form game, for newbies would be a great Idea. Something where the days and nights are not terribly long, and there is A LOT of transparency. with maybe a vet or two assigned to give pointers but not actually playing. So some of the people who would like to learn can, in a lower stress hands on environment. I got played in Lakeside because of the assumptions I made. (mainly that scum could not communicate with town outside of the thread, which shape did and claimed was his night power to shore up his position as town) And the tutorial sites that Astil sent me to, gave me a lot of misconceptions of what was going on in the early part of the game. So to sum things up, I think a Newbie game, for just those with 0-1 games under thier belt could be a valuable training tool. Wilts, If you like a good strategy game then Mafia is a lot of fun (also a love of reading helps as the post whores go off topic a lot) If a tutorial game goes up, I really recommend giving it a try!

It was set up well I will say that. Very well. One of my favs.
BlueStar Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I remember asking this question a year ago...outlaw will help you through it. :D
djthefunkchris Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 I thought you learned pretty fast. Or maybe it was the teacher? It was my first game, and I didn't really know any of you guys (outside of diary's, and the normal jibber jabber in the dog pound). I would have to say that for some reason MJD just looked bad to me, when the two of you started going on. I never could pinpoint an exact thing he said that made me think that way, but when he come up scum, I instantly trusted you.... So in a pretty big way I feel you helped me understand the game and mechanics of it, being on the same team, as I could have had from anyone. I didn't know what a "PGO" was, and you asked me if I had a shotgun handy for you to borrow, right in the thread, and I think it was the first day. I was bullet proof, you were the PGO... Poor MJD, lol. "Hey DJ, have anymore bullets?" Putting two and two together isn't that hard for me, but what can and cannot happen in the game was something I had no clue about... they had those....i still dont fully understand the game and this is my fifth or sixth one lol im a slow learner tho I think the best way to get started is just to get in there and play. Ask questions, people answer them, and ussually honestly (about game mechanics)... As a dishonest answer would probably get someone a vote, lol. I happen to think the mod had something to do with it, but I might be a bit biased there. Oh yes... I do remember the mod being so helpful. question: "If something happens to me at night, will you send me a PM letting me know, or do I have to guess?" your answer: "I think it will be obvious if anything happens to you at night, you won't need a PM." Then I get shot and survive, but no PM stating for sure it's me, and I have no idea if there are any other's that had somethign like a bullet proof vest or anything. A little of both, maybe? It was set up well I will say that. Very well. One of my favs. Same here. I kid with nZane quite a bit, but I find myself rooting for him in any game he is in.... He's too good to lose all the time, and doesn't deserve the deaths he gets most the time (Was not a threat to who kills him ussually). I remember asking this question a year ago...outlaw will help you through it. /nod. Although Outlaw is definately one people consider to be a great vet in the game, I can't help thinking most the time people underestimate him. The person that most impressed me, that I was able to see come in as a newbie to the game, is probably Derek_b. I also think very highly of THEDEMONSEED, although I haven't seen him in a while. Of course all the veterans never cease to amaze me. This game is a strategy game first and foremost (at least the way we play it). So I would suggest this game to anyone that likes strategy games, as well as poker players. There is quite a bit of skill to it.
