Can ANYONE explain the ending of this movie to me? Tonight is the third time I've seen it and I still don't get it.

He and the chimp end up in the very distant future. Marky Mark beats Thade who is trapped in that little room of the decrepit ruins of the ship.

So when he gets back to his own time there's a shrine to Thade where the Lincoln Memorial should be and the planet is being run by apes in "modern time"?

I'm sorry.... it makes no sense to me and I even found several quotes from the cast saying they saw the movie and don't get it either.

Can anyone explain please?

EDIT: Some people think Thade escaped the room and found a way to go back in time... but that would make no sense. He'd have to be the ape version of Jesus and go back thousands of years before Marky Mark. I dunno... never has a movie been so damn annoying to follow.

I've never seen it (because it looks ****), but according to IMDb:

1. Thade is locked inside the Oberon with Pericles.

2. The Oberon still has power.

3. The Oberon still has pods onboard.

4. Pericles is trained to go to the pods, and he is trained to fly a pod.

5. Pericles either trains Thade how to fly the pod and/or Thade enters the pod with Pericles and he flys the pod through the storm, to Earth.

6. Thade lands in the early part of the 21st Century ( BEFORE Leo arrives ) he is captured and placed in a primate research facility, where he encounters genetically enhanced chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans.

7. The project is huge and consists of thousands genetically enhanced primates.

8. Thade sows the seeds of rebellion to these apes, and as his movement grows, so does primate intelligence.

9. Testing on Thade yields human researchers the key to speeding up ape evolution, the apes have now grown smarter much faster than in Leos time, what would have taken thousands of years now has taken a fraction of the time.

10. After years in captivity and thousands under his influence, Thade launches a coordinated rebellion quickly gaining access to weapons and key facilities.

11. A long and bloody struggle ensued, lasting several years.

12. Eventually, Earth is conquered by apes.

13. Leo lands finding an Earth now conquered by apes, and the Lincoln Memorial is altered, and the technology is the same as 21st century Earth.

I think people make too much of it and try to think logically about it. I took it as a stupid comedy ending to have a laugh, I really don't think it was meant as anything more.

Pericles wasn't on the ship at the end though, he left with the humans and other apes.

If you go by the original films, it would take the apes thousands of years to be as revolutionized as they were in the end of the movie. Thade would've had to have landed long before 0 AD.

One website said Tim Burton was going to explain things in a sequel but since he effed up the movie so bad by not explaining anything at all... Fox wouldn't allow the sequel due to bad reviews. Problem is there is no credit or source to that, so I dunno if it's true or not.

It's a movie. Just go with the flow and leave your brain at the door.

A movie still has to make sense.

Yeah right, because we all know about talking apes, and zombies, and little plastic toys that go on massive adventures....

Don't go trying to analyse it, just accept that it is a film, and if it hasn't been explained to a definitive point in the film then anything that anyone else comes up with is purely their own interpretation of the film.

What you're talking about is realism..... not sense in a story structure.
