tjb000 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Has anyone here ever heard of LegalSounds.com or even use it? I'm on an extremely tight budget but I'm itching to get my hands on music as cheap as possible. I'm not really into using torrents or anything, mainly because I'm scared of getting caught or something. I'm going to be getting a Rhapsody subscription as well, but they're missing a lot of artists I like in their library. Anyways, I was doing some research and came across LegalSounds.com. It's based in Russia. Thing is, it only costs $0.09 a song. Yeah. 9¢ a song. Compared to iTunes 99¢ a song. I thought it was too good to be true and that there had to be a catch. Well, I did even more research, and it seems legit. But the legality of it is very grey. I've read many arguments stating that it is both legal and illegal. I've read MANY people have used it (and been using for a long time) and they never came across a problem. It seems to be secure as well. That was the first worry that came to mind. It's also gotten some pretty good reviews from various websites. So what I guess I'm asking is... Does anyone here use it? Is it safe? Will I get in legal troubles (the freakin' RIAA) if I use it? I would appreciate any information that anyone has. Thanks.
Thomnipotent Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I'm guessing that someone's getting screwed if the songs are that cheap. And if someone's getting screwed, someone's going to be upset. I wouldn't do it.
wilts Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I would say read through any disclaimers, terms and conditions, copyright notices, etc. and then read it all again, and again. If after this, it seems pretty legit then I would say go for it. At the end of the day, if there is nothing stated saying that you are basically a thief or something, then I can't imagine that even if there is some kind of backlash that you would be in line for a whooping. I am sure the agencies would be far more interested in the site owners who are selling it....just my opinion though.
infinitywpi Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 There've been sites like that before. They're not legal or illegal... they exist in this 'quasi-legal' state where if they existed in America... or anywhere outside Russia, really... they'd be illegal. But Russian law supposedly doesn't consider them illegal since they seem to do all their paperwork. Or at least know how to do the runaround. If it helps, the last site like that I can remember hearing about? The recording industry and US Government convinced Visa and Mastercard to stop making payments to it, so Americans had to stop using it. But they failed to get Russia to declare it illegal. So... it all depends on your outlook, really. Just remember, it's probably got tied to the Russian mob or terrorism or something, and as soon as they can prove it, anyone who paid them money is going to get 'looked at'.
Comradebot Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Just Use Limewire Don't use Limewire. Repeat after me, don't use Limewire. It is not to be trusted.
darthsiddus2 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 yea Limewire is being used as a tool for the government now. you should use something like iTunes music store. the songs are $0.99USD. and the chances of you getting caught using bittorrent is more than winning the lottery.
moon_lit_tears Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 hmmm ive used limewire for about three years now.....never had a problem
Thomnipotent Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 hmmm ive used limewire for about three years now.....never had a problem I'm guessing you don't have virus/spyware detection software, then.. and it's more that you don't know you've ever had a problem. Limewire tears things apart. Maybe not right away, but with time, it'll bring a system to a screeching halt. Get rid of it, trust me.
cappyboy Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 So what do you recommend instead for the thrifty among us?
darthsiddus2 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 also use a program called Cabos its a java based file-sharing program using the Gnutella network basically the same network Limewire runs on and its less known.
tjb000 Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 Well, I did looked into it even more. I re-read pretty much all their legal stuff. Here's some tidbits from it. Is it legal to download music from site LegalSounds.com? All the files in LegalMedia projects including LegalSounds.com are available for distribution through Internet according to license ЛС-3М-05-09 of the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society. Under the license terms, LegalMedia pays license fees for all the materials subject to the Law of the Russian Federation "On Copyright and Related Rights". All the materials are available solely for personal use and must not be used for further distribution, resale or broadcasting. You are responsible for any usage and distribution of files received from LegalSounds.com. This responsibility depends on the local legislation of your country of residence. LegalSounds.com Administration does not keep up with the laws of different countries and is not responsible the actions of non-Russian users. Then I stumbled upon this question - Is Legalsounds.com legal in other country? Currently there are no legal restrictions for using our service in other countries. Sounds like their saying it's both legal and illegal. Odd. But as infinity mentioned, the government could put a halt to this and go after the people who did give them money. I don't know if I want to take that chance, so I guess I'm better off staying clear from LegalSounds. Bummer though... only 9¢ a song. As for Limewire, I'm not too sure about it and from hearing more opinions on it, I'm also staying clear from it. I admit, I use to use it LONG ago, but haven't even looked into for quite some time. Sounds unsafe. Cabos, eh? Never even heard of it. Maybe that's a good thing that it's not well known. Does it have a lot of albums/songs to choose from? I'm still iffy on the whole downloading illegaly though. Mainly just because I don't want to get into any legal trouble. That's the last thing I need.
darthsiddus2 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 as I've said it uses the same network Limewire uses but the government can't spy on it because its open source and java based. http://www.zeropaid.com has the info you need. also Limewire is NOT vista compatible... I REPEATE is NOT vista compatible
moon_lit_tears Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I'm guessing you don't have virus/spyware detection software, then.. and it's more that you don't know you've ever had a problem. Get rid of it, trust me. nooooo i have spyware and firewalls...my computer catches EVERYTHING its running great ask shadowed im picky about my system and its maintinence...im pretty handy with that kinda stuff and smart about it...guess we all need something to do lol
