Pre-Show

Haku & The Barbarian defeated Duane Gill and Chris Walker in 5:40 when Haku defeated Duane Gill by pinfall with a Crescent Kick

Notes: E+, Haku & Barbarian in a simple pre-show squash

USA Network & Sky Sports

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan greet everyone and we go to the ring for our opening bout.

Jim Duggan defeated Brooklyn Brawler in 2:36 by pinfall with a Three Point Stance.

Notes: C- rating in a quick squash for Duggan. Brawler was off his game tonight.

We then go backstage where Dean Douglas is with Gene Okerlund. Douglas cuts a short promo on how he plans to rise to the top.

Notes: D

Dean Douglas defeated Tugboat in 4:19 by pinfall following a lowblow that the ref didn't see followed by a quick roll-up. After the match, Douglas grabbed the ring bell and hit Tugboat in the back of the head as he tried to leave the ring.

Notes: D- for the match, D for the attack and turn

Sgt. Slaughter, Col. Mustafa and Gen. Adnan are backstage, and give a promo trashing the United States.

Notes: C- , Adnan helped Slaughter & Mustafa through the promo

In the show's Main Event, Tito Santana defeated Buddy Rose in 5:45 by pinfall with a Flying Forearm.

Notes:C-, Rose & Tito had great chemistry together

OVERALL: D-

The crowd expected more angles, interviews and hot storylines.

My thoughts:

Not really a whole lot to say. I couldn't really do anything about the crowd's disappointment in the lack of storylines, considering this was the first show, was only 30 minutes long, and was a B-show. Finding a good balance of matches & angles on a 30 minute show could be tough. With Primetime Wrestling coming up next, we should get more into the meat of things.

Wednesday, Week 1, January 1991

World Wrestling Federation has agreed to terms with internation superstar Tito Santana on a 2 year contract extension, which will have Santana wrestling exclusively for the WWF.

An agreement has been reached with Smokey Mountain Wrestling for SMW to operate as a developmental territory for the WWF. Billy Smith was assigned to SMW as the first talent to take part in this new venture between SMW & WWF.

WWF has agreed to terms with a young manager by the name of Joel Gertner. Early reports indicate that Gertner will be assigned to Smokey Mountain until a suitable client can be found for him to manage.

Rumors are swirling that an incident took place Col. Mustafa (Iron Sheik) and Dean Douglas backstage at the Wrestling Challenge tapings last night. Sources say that Mustafa antagonized Douglas to the point where the two had to be restrained to keep a fight from breaking out. Sources indicate that Mustafa had a sit down meeting with new booker Jayson Gardner and he was given a light warning.

Thursday, Week 1, January 1991

Pre-Show

Hulk Hogan defeated Hercules Hernandez in 4:43 by pinfall with a Big Boot and Leg Drop.

Notes: C+. Hogan & Hercules didn't click. Good work by Slick at ringside. Just wanted to get Hogan some work while I figure out what to do with him short-term. I have long term plans, but I'm having difficulty coming up with something before then.

The Ultimate Warrior defeated Earthquake in 4:40 by pinfall with a Big Splash.

Notes: B-. Good work by Jimmy Hart at ringside, however Hart and Earthquake lack chemistry together. There was an obvious lack of selling in the match. Just getting the champ a match, he should be on TV next week as things continue to develop.

Taped for USA Network, Sky Sports & TSN

Gorilla Monsoon, Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper welcome everyone to WWF Primetime Wrestling with a sold out crowd in Jackson, MS. They run down the card for the night, and we go to the ring for our first match of the night.

Primetime Wrestling opens with Dean Douglas defeating Jim Brunzell in 3:42 by pinfall with the Final Exam.

Notes: D-. Brunzell seemed off his game tonight.

Sgt. Slaughter, Col. Mustafa and Gen. Adnan attack Jim Duggan backstage, and leave him down and out.

Notes: C-

We return from a commercial break with Slaughter, Mustafa, and Adnan backstage. They give another anti-American rant including insulting the Ultimate Warrior.

Notes: C. Adnan helped through the promo.

The Nasty Boys defeated The Bushwhackers in 4:52 when Brian Knobbs pinned Bushwhacker Luke following a running powerslam.

Notes: D+. Jimmy Hart did some good work at ringside.

After the match, Jimmy Hart gets in the ring with a microphone. The Nasty Boys challenge the WWF World Tag Team Champions, The Hart Foundation, to a match at the Royal Rumble.

Notes: C-

Tito Santana defeated Owen Hart in 5:34 by pinfall with a Flying Forearm in Owen's WWF debut.

Notes: C

Davey Boy Smith defeated Rick 'The Model' Martel in 9:09 by pinfall with a Running Powerslam.

Notes: B. Martel was accompanied to ringside by his new manager Bobby Heenan. There were times when there was a definite lack of psychology on display, and the match had a tendency to drift a little.

Million Dollar Man is interviewed backstage by Gene Okerlund backstage about his upcoming match with Kerry Von Erich. He promises a special suprise for Von Erich.

Notes: B

Million Dollar Man defeated Kerry Von Erich in 7:45 by with a school boy roll-up after the light's went out and Undertaker appeared on the entrance ramp distracting Von Erich.

Notes: B

Mr Perfect cuts a promo backstage hyping up his upcoming match with Shawn Michaels.

Notes: B+, Bobby Hennan helped Perfect through the promo.

Mr Perfect defeated Shawn Michaels in 13:36 by pinfall with a Perfect Plex to successfully defend his WWF Intercontinental title.

Notes: B

Following the match, Mr Perfect attacks Michaels. Jake Roberts runs in and runs Perfect out of the ring. Jake stares down Perfect as Perfect and Heenan back their way up the entrance ramp.

Notes: C

OVERALL: B

My Thoughts:

I really need to find a way to get Hogan more involved in the short-term. I expected more out of Perfect vs. Michaels, but I sort of forgot that I'm rated more on popularity than performance, so that would explain it. I'm expecting some good ratings in the coming weeks from the Perfect vs. Jake storyline and the DiBiase, Von Erich, Undertaker storyline. Especially with DiBiase, Von Erich & Taker provided that I can come up with something good to fill-in the gaps.

In addition, the Main Event for WWF Superstars was announced. Kerry Von Erich will take on Virgil in singles action. Von Erich requested this match from WWF President Jack Tunney following his loss to Ted Dibiase on Primetime Wrestling.

Pre-Show

Steven Regal defeated Jim Brunzell in 6:50 by submission with the Regal Stretch.

Notes: D-. Brunzell seemed off his game

The Warlord defeated Dustin Rhodes in 5:35 by submission with the Full Nelson.

Notes: D. The Warlord seemed off his game tonight. Slick did some good work at ringside.

Taped for USA Network, TSN, Sky Sports & ATV

Billy Red Lyons and Roddy Piper open the show.

Hercules Hernandez defeated Max Moon in 3:54 by submission via the Full Nelson.

Notes: D. Slick did some good work at ringside.

Sgt. Slaughter and Col. Mustafa attacked Dusty Rhodes backstage, and leave him down and out.

Notes: C

Dean Douglas is in the ring and issues an open challenge for anyone in the locker room to face him tonight. Big Bossman accepted the challenge.

Notes: D

Big Bossman defeated Dean Douglas in 6:56 by pinfall with a Bossman Slam.

Notes: C-. Big Bossman was visibly tiring toward the end.

The Hart Foundation come to the ring and accept the challenge made by the Nasty Boys for the Royal Rumble.

Notes: C

Kerry Von Erich is interviewed by Gene Okerlund backstage. Kerry comments on what happened on Primetime Wrestling when the Undertaker interrupted his match with Ted DiBiase.

Notes: D

The Rockers defeated Rhythm 'n' Blues in 7:48 when Marty Jannetty defeated Honky Tonk Man by pinfall with a Rocker Dropper.

Notes: B-. Shawn Michaels seemed off his game tonight.

Jake Roberts cuts a promo about Mr. Perfect and the Intercontinental Title.

Notes: C

Kerry Von Erich defeated Virgil in 7:31 by pinfall following botched interference by Ted DiBiase and a tornado punch.

Notes: C-

Overall: D+. The crowd felt the promotion needed more hot storylines.

My thoughts: A little confused about the crowd's desire for more hot storylines, since we didn't get the message after Primetime Wrestling and all the storylines have either the same heat grade or better as they did before Primetime. Definitely need to get Hogan, Warrior, Savage, etc. more involved in the shows to boost the quality. Although, I guess with 2 of the shows being considered B-shows, its not a major concern yet.

Sunday, Week 1, January 1991

WWF announced today that they have re-signed the Honky Tonk Man for 2 additional years.

I'm open to suggestion on making the results easier to read. I'm wanting something simple, but from glancing, it would appear things might be difficult to read as is.

I'm probably not going to continue at this pace, but I didn't really have anything to do today, and I'm trying to get things moving.

Just wanted to say I'm enjoying this diary, and I'm especially enjoying your explanations of why you made the choices you made, and what you're hoping to accomplish in the future. Many diaries won't break the fourth wall to the extent that you have, which makes the booking process far more opaque. I'm digging the insight you're providing.

Pre-Show

The Warlord defeated Duane Gill in 2:50 by pinfall.

Crush defeated Jim Brunzell in 4:43 by pinfall with a Full-Nelson Slam.

Notes: D

Taped for USA Network & Sky One

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan greet everyone and we go to the ring for some tag team action.

The Legion Of Doom defeated Power and Glory in 5:41 when Road Warrior Hawk defeated Hercules Hernandez by pinfall after a Doomsday Device.

Notes: C+. Hawk was really off his game tonight. Animal looked good.

Backstage, Davey Boy Smith is having a conversation with a friend. He turns to walk away and accidently bumps into Randy Savage. Davey Boy appologizes and walks away.

Notes: B

After a commercial break, Piper's Pit is set-up in the ring for special guest Davey Boy Smith. During the interview, Randy Savage runs down to the ring, and attacks Davey Boy from behind.

Notes: B

Kerry Von Erich defeated Owen Hart in 6:45 by pinfall.

Notes: C-

OVERALL: C-. Still getting the lack of hot storylines message.

My Thoughts: Not a whole lot going on here. I realized that I hadn't given the Road Warriors any work, and considering their one of my favorite tag teams of all-time, that had to change. Obviously, Davey Boy & Savage is the new storyline addition to come from this show, but not much to comment on thus far.

NOTES: E+

MAIN

Tugboat defeated Iron Mike Sharpe in 3:34 by pinfall with a Vertical Splash.

NOTES: E. Tugboat was really off his game tonight. Squash for Tugboat.

Randy Savage is interviewed by Gene Okerlund backstage about his attack on Davey Boy Smith on Wrestling Challenge. Savage claims that Davey Boy disrespected him when he bumped into him backstage. Savage ignores Gene when Gene mentions that Davey immediately apologized.

NOTES: B-

Davey Boy Smith defeated Tully Blanchard in 7:37 by disqualification after Randy Savage interferred.

NOTES: B-. Tully & Davey Boy have pretty good chemistry.

Following the match, Davey Boy and Savage are restrained by a group of WWF referees and backstage staff before they can come to blows.

NOTES: B-

Jake Roberts defeated Rick 'The Model' Martel in 9:42 by pinfall with a DDT.

NOTES: B-. Martel seemed off his game tonight. Roberts & Martel have pretty good chemistry.

After the match, Bobby Heenan waves to the back, bringing Mr. Perfect to the ring. Perfect and Martel start to attack The Snake. However, Marty Jannetty sprints from the back to clear the ring before too much damage can be done.

NOTES: C-.

"Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase comes to the ring to address the situation with Kerry Von Erich. He states that the situation with Von Erich isn't personal. He explains that he was going to let things go after the match, until Von Erich had to beat up on Virgil, so as a result, Kerry now has a target on his back. He goes on to explain that everyone has a price, including The Undertaker, who is now his own personal guardian.

NOTES: B

The Ultimate Warrior comes to the ring to address the crowd. Warrior goes into one of his signature, incoherent rants with the main points being that he's upset with the bullying that he sees going on with Sgt. Slaughter, Col. Mustafa, and Gen. Adnan. He challenges Slaughter to a match, next week on Primetime Wrestling.

NOTES: A

Before Warrior can completely finish his rant, Slaughter and Adnan enter the ring from behind through the crowd. Following a brutal attack that leaves the Warrior bloodied in the middle of the ring, Slaughter lays an Iraqi flag over the Warrior's body.

NOTES: C+

Hulk Hogan defeated Honky Tonk Man in 6:46 by pinfall with a Big Boot and Leg Drop.

NOTES: B. Honky Tonk Man was really off his game tonight.

Hogan is making his way up the entrance ramp as Real American blares through the arena following the win, when Earthquake barges through the curtain and nails Hogan with a clothesline. Earthquake drags Hogan back into the ring and hits the Earthquake Splash. Jimmy Hart got on the microphone and taunted Hogan as Earthquake hit another splash. Hart states that Earthquake was still upset about losing to Hogan last year, and decided that things between them weren't over yet.

NOTES: A.

OVERALL: B-

My Thoughts: I had way too many post-match attacks on this show, but they seemed like the quickest way to intensify things on the build to the Royal Rumble. Hogan vs. Earthquake isn't ideal, but Earthquake was one of the few main event heels left on the roster that wasn't already involved in something, so that's where I went.

Big Bossman defeated Dean Douglas in 6:50 by pinfall with a Bossman Slam.

Notes: D+

Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty are interviewed by Gene Okerlund backstage. They address the last couple of weeks with Mr. Perfect and Rick Martel. They also thank Jake Roberts for helping Shawn after his match with Mr. Perfect. Marty explains that he helped Jake on Primetime Wrestling because Jake helped Shawn.

Notes: C-. Marty Jannetty was very underwhelming.

Jim Neidhart defeated Jerry Saggs in 6:03 when Jerry Saggs was disqualified when Brian Knobbs ran in and attacked Jim Neidhart.

Notes: C-

Sgt. Slaughter comes to the ring with Gen. Adnan to address the Ultimate Warrior. Slaughter says that he will accept Warrior's challenge on one condition: Warrior must be willing to put the title on the line at the Royal Rumble.

Notes: B+. Gen. Adnan helped Slaughter during the segment.

Marty Jannetty defeated Rick 'The Model' Martel in 12:29 by pinfall with a Rocker Dropper.

Notes: C. Jannetty seemed off his game tonight.

OVERALL: D. The crowd expected more angles & interview segments.

My Thoughts: Emulating real life and going with Warrior vs. Slaughter at the Rumble. A very disappointing performance this evening by Jannetty. It looks like Douglas' performed a little better tonight than he has been, hopefully that will continue. I'd like to see him as a solid midcarder by this time next year as I've always been a fan of him. I was pleasantly surprised to see Slaughter bust out a B+ promo after his string of C+'s.

Earthquake is celebrating in the ring when Hulk Hogan sprints down the entrance ramp. Earthquake escapes the ring before Hogan can get him.

NOTES: B+

Hogan takes a microphone, and says that since Earthquake was apparently too scared to face him tonight, he would face him at Royal Rumble. Hogan said he'd already spoke with Jack Tunney and the match was set.

NOTES: A+

The Undertaker defeated Jim Duggan in 5:14 by pinfall with a Tombstone Piledriver.

NOTES: B. There were times when there was a definite lack of psychology on display, and the match had a tendency to drift a little.

After the match, Kerry Von Erich attacks The Undertaker in the ring. However, Von Erich is unable to do much damage, and gets a tombstone piledriver.

NOTES: C+.

Million Dollar Man takes a microphone and taunts Kerry Von Erich. Dibiase is laughing as the show goes off the air.

NOTES: B+

OVERALL: B.

My Thoughts: I strongly considered moving the 6-man tag higher up the card, and moving Earthquake vs. Davey Boy down. Might have been able to get a slightly better overall rating with that move, but overall I'm happy with the card.
