panix04 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Because it's kind of topical if you live in the UK! I'm not keen on the current version by the x-factor winner. And i'm not a huge fan of the Leonard Cohen original either. For me it would have to be the Jeff Buckley version, which I think is just beautiful! The Rufus wainright version is OK, but its buckley all the way for me.
G-Prime Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Bon Jovi. They did in on MTV Unplugged, and I saw it live when they played here at the start of 08. Jeff Buckley is a very, very close second though.
Blasphemywebleed Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 For performance of the song it would have to be by my mate Derek on New Years 2005. He hogged the karaoke stage in the pub for a solid 3 hours and finished with the most emotionally charged version of the song i've ever hear. Drink can bring out the worst in people. For recorded version it has to be Jeff Buckley for me.

RKO_HBK Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Jeff Buckley all the way, nobody comes close to the emotion he gets from it. His version is one of my favourite songs of all time, Alexandra Burke (X-factor) just sucked all the emotion out of it for me.
AfRoMaN36 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 The version from Shrek. Not entirely sure who sung it, but he nailed it.
Blasphemywebleed Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 The version from Shrek. Not entirely sure who sung it, but he nailed it. John Cale I believe.
Midnightnick Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 John Cale I believe. That one was Rufus Wainwright. And for me, I go with Regina Spektor's version.
Shmoe Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Personally, Myles Kennedy from Alter Bridge. It's breath taking. Then Buckley. Whoever said the X Factor person sucked the emotion out, so true. I hate that version. For me the song is all about a subtle, raw emotion and then she's just screaming it at me for like, 4 minutes. I really couldn't care less.

The Rufus wainright version is OK, but its buckley all the way for me. And to me he took a "Joyfull" song and made it .... sad. It just did nothing for me. I like the "X-Factor" girls version because it stays more on the original's tip, and I believe if Leonard could sing it like that he would have. It's a beutifull song, not a sad song. My favorite is probably the Shrek version though. The original isn't bad, but the guy doesn't have the range you can tell he is looking for in almost everything he does. He always has the backups doing it though.
Comradebot Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 I'll third Jeff Buckley. Beautiful version, period.
BurningHamster Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 I'm going to echo Buckley's version ... although i seem to recall hearing a Nick Cave version of the song a long time ago that I think I liked. Or maybe my memory is just messing with me.

Or maybe my memory is just messing with me. Ahhhh, Nick Cave... One of the single most underappreciated musical geniuses of all time. Yes, his version is also brilliant. But he's brilliant, so that should be expected. Guess the man has historically been just too ugly to be more than a cult icon. Oh well, The Firstborn Is Dead remains one of my favorite albums of all time. Though I do believe most versions of the song are a bit different from one another lyrically, not just carbon copy covers. Could be wrong, though.
James Casey Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 The version from Shrek. Not entirely sure who sung it, but he nailed it. John Cale I believe. That one was Rufus Wainwright. Wainwright on the soundtrack, Cale in the film itself, I believe. And I'd always thought that Buckley's verison was the 'original' cover - turns out Cale beat him to it. Who knew? I quite like kd Lang's version. I went on a Hallelujah kick a while back and tried to track down as many versions as I could. She has a great voice, and it really works with the song. If pushed, though, I suppose I'd go for Wainwright or Buckley's version.
danny magic Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 I'd have to with Jeff Buckly's version as its my all-time favourite song! Closely followed by Bon Jovi's. Don't really like Cohen's voice even though he did the orginal, although kudos to him for writing it.

Clarity Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Bon Jovi's is good. Buckley's is amazing.. Alexandras sucks big floppy donkey ones
G-Prime Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=OSFCDhLhuB8&feature=related I forgot about this one. It's pretty good too.

G-Prime Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I'd like to here him by himself, but still... My new favorite, thanks! Yeah, I forgot how good it was myself. It's kind of surprising, he's actually a comedian, and his songs are usually really funny.

Yeah, I got that from when they started. Just never heard of him, so now I am stuck on Youtube trying to find something actually funny, but so far... eh, so/so. The one I liked the most so far is Rock and Roll Nerd.
