1999: Rise Of The Renegades

Recommended Posts

Never in the American wrestling business was there a more tulmutuous time than 1999. The "Monday Night Wars" between WWF's "Monday Night Raw" and WCW's "Monday Night Nitro" raged on with the WWF seemingly gaining an insurmountable lead over the now nosediving WCW product. The WWF, led by breakthrough stars such as "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Rock, Mankind and numerous others, saw their Raw program become the highest rated cable show in the US and their "Attitude" driven product brought millions of new fans to shows, as the WWF averaged 12,000 fans to live events. However in late May, the WWF suffered a major tragedy when WWF wrestler Owen Hart died during a failed entrance off the rafters of Kansas City's Kemper Arena during WWF's ironically named "Over The Edge" Pay Per View. Hart's fall was not seen on PPV but by the entire live audience, many thinking it was part of the show. Hart would die soon after the fall at a local hospital. WWF owner Vince McMahon would then shock and disgust many by both not telling fans in the arena of Hart's death but also continuing the show as "Owen would have wanted it that way" and then holding two "tribute shows" to Owen. This major public relations nightmare saw McMahon and the WWF being sued by Owen's widow Martha and the Hart Family. Despite this major tragedy, the WWF's popularity continued to grow. The WWF looked to continue it's dominance of the wrestling world and more importantly WCW. As the WWF rode high, in WCW it was the polar opposite. The former leader in wrestling and the group which president Eric Bischoff claimed would bankrupt the WWF had become a mere shell of itself. The company whose revolutionary nWo storyline and stable, along with Goldberg made the company literly millions of dollars for Ted Turner and his Time Warner company, had fallen into a major tailspin. WCW's ratings and PPV buy rates were down tremendously. The company lost upwards of 16 million dollars in 1998 and it's booking team of Kevin Nash and Kevin Sullivan had seemingly booked the promotion into oblivion. Locker room morale was at shocking lows. A very solid wrestling based midcard were failed to be pushed, as older talents like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Nash and numerous others continued to hold the positions at the top of the cards despite major decreases in popularity. By the early summer of 99, Bischoff was removed from the company, leaving the company with seemingly no direction. WCW hoped a savior could come their way soon as money and fans were being lost and a record pace.

And then there was....

Paul Heyman's Philadelphia based ECW promotion was the third in the US's "Big Three" wrestling promotions. For nearly 6 years, ECW was seen as the alternative and the trend setter for mainstream wrestling. Many ex ECW stars became major names in both WWF and WCW and almost every week moves and storylines used by ECW and it's roster would wind up on WWF and WCW programing. Heyman credited ECW as the template for the WWF's new "attitude" based product. One of the key aspects of ECW's popularity was it's near rabid fan base. The fans of ECW were among the most vocal, "smart" and dedicated fans in recent memory. Heyman many times credited fans as the reason ECW was both syndicated and on Pay Per View. ECW business was at a major crossroads. ECW PPV's were seen as successes despite they still being a relativly small promotion compared to the corporate giants of WWF and WCW. ECW toured across the US despite not being in the best financial state. Without a major backer of any kind and without a major television show (ECW's "Hardcore TV" was syndicated in various locations across the country), it was essentially now or never for ECW.

As of July 1, 1999....it was now

TNN GOING TO THE EXTREME: ECW IS COMING TO TNN

New York, N.Y ., July 1st 1999 – CBS Cable's TNN will enter the cable wrestling fray with a one-hour weekly series from Extreme Championship Wrestling.

The series, which will premiere at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, will feature ECW's talent roster, including "Mr. Pay-Per-View" Rob Van Dam, the Legendary

According to the terms of TNN's three-year agreement with ECW, the cable network will share in the revenue of all ECW activities, including its TNN telecasts, pay-per-view events, home video, e-commerce and merchandising.

A TNN spokesman declined to reveal specifics of the deal except to say that CBS is not taking an equity stake in ECW. "It will be a mutually beneficial relationship," the spokesman said. TNN likely chose to be a revenue participant in ECW because wrestling TV programs serve as promotional vehicles for pay-per-view events and other ancillary activities.

The ECW series is part of TNN's recent effort to target teens and young men with action-oriented programming such as "WSL's Rollerjam," the updated version of Roller Derby, and "Motor Madness," a series that features demolition derbies.

" 'Rollerjam' has delivered a teen audience we've never seen before. We're trying to build an action-packed Friday night to try and keep them," said David Hall, president of TNN, who added that the Friday night adrenaline-fueled block has helped to woo new youth-oriented advertisers, such as New Line Cinema, to the cable network.

Wrestling programs routinely rank among basic cable's most-watched programs on TBS and USA Network. Hall estimates that nearly 30 million homes tune in to wrestling on cable each month. On the broadcast side, UPN is adding a weekly WWF wrestling show to its primetime lineup this fall.

Will Byrd of William Byrd Prods. will serve as senior producer of the ECW series. Byrd served as producer of "Monday Nitro" on TNT.

ECW owner and executive producer Paul Heyman had this to say on the announcement "Finally Extreme Championship Wrestling is on national television and I speak for everyone from the staff, wrestlers, announcers, everyone affiliated with ECW when I say that I promise the fans of ECW and wrestling in general that "ECW on TNN" will be the most innovative, action packed, and unique wrestling program you have ever seen and will blow the other 2 companies' shows out of the water because we will take TNN and the wrestling world to the extreme".

For more information go to http://www.ecwwrestling.com

TNN is now seen in more than 81 million cable television homes in North America. TNN is owned by CBS and is a service of CBS Cable.

Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Weekly Newsletter: ECW News and Notes

Week One: August 1999

-With "Heat Wave" over, ECW now seemingly is putting it's entire focus on the upcoming debut of "ECW on TNN". We have learned from an insider within ECW that several storylines have or will be cut within the next few weeks in order to start things off relativly fresh for the debut show. Speaking of the debut show, a near simultanious feeling of anxiouness and fear is sweeping the lockeroom as many believe if it works the show will take ECW to new heights but however if it fails, it could be the legitimate death nail for the company.

-We can confirm that Joey Styles WILL NOT call the show by himself, as speculated by many. Styles will call the show with manager/announcer of the Dudleys, Joel Gertner.

-Speaking of the Dudleys, rumors are running rampant that the duo are in negociations with both WCW and WWF. A potential loss of the Dudleys could be very bad for ECW, espically as it moves into the TNN Era.

-In preperation for the TNN Show, it appears ECW is adding to their roster. This week's house show circuit saw the in ring debuts of North Carolina based CW Anderson and David Cash now dubbed Kid Kash (in a reference to his similar image to singer Kid Rock) along with British and former Stampede star Johnny Smith. It is thought that Smith, along with Giant Kimala II (now dubbed Uganda) have been sent to ECW to prepare for their next tour with All Japan. Uganda, who has been recently pushed as an unstopable force in ECW, has yet to offically sign with ECW.

-Expect changes within the FBI stable shortly, as we've heard rumbilings that Heyman may want the group to be booked in a non comedic way.

-Here are the results for this past week's ECW Hardcore TV

Yoshihiro Tajiri defeated Little Guido

ECW World Tag Team Champions The Dudley Boyz defeated Axl Rotten and New Jack in an Extreme Death Match

Jerry Lynn and Uganda defeated The Impact Players (Lance Storm and Justin Credible)

Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Weekly Newsletter: ECW News and Notes

Week Two: August 1999

-It appears as though that the unthinkable maybe happening in ECW, as sources within the company are claiming that the current ECW World Tag Team Champions The Dudley Boyz have signed with the WWF and will most likley start in the company in September. If true, this is a major for ECW as the Dudleys are seen as ECW mainstays and both are two of the bigger heels and marketable names for the company. We shall see how ECW decides to play this out.

-ECW has already begun to hype it's main event for their debut edition of "ECW on TNN" as we shall see a rematch of epic proportions as ECW World TV Champion Rob Van Dam will face his perenial rival Jerry Lynn.

-Former ECW and now FMW star Mike Awesome has been spotted at several recent shows. It is thought Awesome maybe looking to return to the company after a very successful run in FMW, feuding with ECW favorite Masato Tananka.

-Here are the results for this past week's ECW Hardcore TV

Nova and Chris Chetti defeated Simon Diamond and Super Crazy

Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Weekly Newsletter: ECW News and Notes

Week Three: August 1999

-The Dudleys are offically WWF bound as the duo on this week's episode of Hardcore TV announced their intentions to take the ECW Tag Team Titles with them to Stanford. In a response to this, a new main event has been signed for the debut episode of "ECW on TNN" as The Dudleys will defend the titles for the last time as they battle perenial foes in Balls Mahoney and Little Spike Dudley. What is interesting about this is, that it has been announced rather than using tape from Thursday's show in The Elks Lodge in Queens, NY, ECW has announced it's debut episode will take place LIVE from the ECW Arena. Some within TNN see this as a potential nightmare as the always unpredictible ECW could put company censors under major stress right off the bat.

-We have been told several "major" surprises will be in for the debut episode of "ECW on TNN". No idea on what it is.

-If you go to the ECW Roster page, you will see new profiles for Jazz, CW Anderson, Kid Kash, Simon Diamond, and Ms. Congeneiality.

-Expect a major push of Rhino (who has recently dropped the Richards name) as he is now being paired with another hot act in Steve Corino and Jack Victory.

-Here are the results for this past week's ECW Hardcore TV

Uganda defeated Spanish Angel

Uganda defeated David "Kid" Kash

The Dudley Boyz defeated Nova and Chris Chetti

ECW on TNN Preview

The time is here and the hour is almost upon us. Finally, the most unique, revolutionary and above all EXTREME wrestling promotion in the world makes their national television debut as ECW presents the debut edition of "ECW on TNN" LIVE from arguably the most infamous arena in wrestling today, The ECW Arena in South Philly. And on such a history making event, how fitting would it be that it has two historical main events.

In the rematch from their universally praised no time limit battle at Hardcore Heaven, the most innovative and longest reigning champion in professional wrestling ECW World Television "Mr. Pay Per View" Rob Van Dam will face the man who fans not only see as Van Dam's in ring equal, but have since begun calling him "The New F'N Show" Jerry Lynn. The question is not if arguably two of the best wrestlers will top themselves on national televison, but it's actually HOW they will.

However in our second main event, the tone takes a much deeper and more violent tone. For nearly 3 years, the tag team ranks of ECW were dominated by one team and one word: Dudleys. Buh Buh Ray and D-Von have been the most dominant team in ECW history. The duo and their devistating 3D finishing manuever have broken up such teams as The Eliminators and The Gangstas, put ECW legend The Sandman out of ECW and breaking the neck of the girlfriend of Tommy Dreamer, Beulah McGuilicutty. And now The Dudleys have made it known that their time in ECW is at it's end and will soon leave. The problem is the duo are still the ECW World Tag Team Champions and the duo have claimed they will personally deliver the titles to Vince McMahon. That is if they can make it past their greatest challengers, two men who not only have a long history but also may have the Dudleys number in Balls Mahoney and the half brother of the champs Little Spike Dudley. Will Balls and Spike not only take their foes out once and for all but also defend the honor of ECW and save the Tag Team Titles or will The Dudleys take the tag titles with them to Stanford, CT.

Plus also two of the brightest young talents facing off as Mexico's "Insane Luchador" Super Crazy faces The FBI's own Little Guido.

All this plus much much more only on ECW on TNN

ECW on TNN Results 8-27-99

Our show opens with an exterior shot of the ECW Arena, showing the ECW faithful in a line around the block waiting to get in. ECW Announcer Joey Styles does a voiceover claiming tonight the world will see what these people see and that tonight the world's most infamous arena and promotion makes it's debut as it's ECW on TNN. ECW debuts a new on screen graphics (seen above) as we then go to a live shot of the sold out ECW Arena with ECW Announcer Joey Styles in ring as the camera pans the crowd chanting "ECDub". Styles then welcomes us to the debut edition of ECW on TNN and breifly runs down the show until

http://www.bodyslamming.com/other/pics/gertner.jpg

And Well....Well.....Well

Out comes "The Quintessential Studmuffin" Joel "I'm Young, I'm Hung and I'm Skilled With My Tounge" who confirms to Styles he will be his color commentator. The duo continue to run down the card, getting up to the Dudleys/Balls and Spike where "You Sold Out" and "**** The Dudleys" simultaniously start, and then pick up as the duo make their way to the ring. Styles gets out of the ring, as Gertner attempts to interview his former "clients" but Buh Buh and D-Von request Gertner to leave before he is 3D'd. Buh Buh then procedes to cut a very serious promo where he destroys ECW Owner Paul Heyman, claiming the ECW-TNN deal was too late and the Dudleys were gone so they could say whatever they wanted. He then promised to take the ECW Tag Team titles and present them to Vince McMahon on a silver platter and then delivers the brilliant line on ECW and WWF "In ECW, normal men can be made into heroes........but in the WWF, Vince McMahon takes those heroes and they become legends!". They then call out Balls and Spike for their match.

ECW World Tag Team Titles:

© The Dudley Boyz vs. "Little" Spike Dudley and Balls Mahoney

A very hard hitting yet surprisingly quick battle between these two constant rivals had one more for the road. Balls and Spike got a seemingly early advantage over The Dudleys, but just as quick as the advantage came, the consiment professionals in The Dudleys regained an advantage after D-Von nailed a vicious Reverse DDT onto an open chair on Spike. This allowed Buh Buh and D-Von to regain the advantage. The match ends with Balls attempting a superkick on D-Von, which is then blocked as D-Von sets Balls up and nails 3D. The Dudleys RETAIN the ECW World Tag Team Titles. The Dudleys are not done as they break out the tables...and the lighter fluid. An instant highlight is made as Buh Buh and D-Von simultaniously nail powerbombs on Spike and Balls through the flaming tables. Buh Buh then picks up a mic and exclaims the ECW Tag Titles are now WWF property as no one in ECW could beat them for the titles. From the back comes Tommy Dreamer, who claims he'd die for ECW and would rather get crippled and die in the ring before someone brings the ECW Titles to the enemy, so Dreamer challenges The Dudleys for the Tag Titles later on in the show. The Dudleys laugh it off and accept Dreamer's seemingly handicaped match challenge as we go to commercial.

We go to Gertner and Styles who claim Dreamer is the last hope for ECW in getting the titles back. Styles then hypes the ECW Roster to those who have never seen the product before and they thusly hype the athelisticism and international flavor, which takes us to...

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t60/JeanCloude86/SuperCrazy.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h172/Crychon/Wrestling/WWE/LittleGuido2.jpg

Super Crazy vs. Little Guido

This bout was taken from earlier on in the ECW Arena show and did not disapoint. A very even battle between two of the best jr. heavyweights in wrestling today. Impressive highspot as Crazy nailed a very solid moonsault off the guardrail onto Guido and Big Sal. The match ends with Crazy attempting the Trifecta Moonsault, nailing the first and second moonsault but getting tied up on the third as Big Sal distracted him. Guido goes behind Crazy and rises to the top rope and nails a devistating avalanche Sicilian Slice for the win. Guido and Big Sal celebrate in the ring when suddenly Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" hits and from the back strolls a familar face to wrestling fans...

http://www.onyxprophecies.com/dodosquiz/textgames2/vegan_slut/steven%20regal.jpg

Regal enters the ring as Joey and Gertner are in shock that Steven Regal is in an ECW Ring. The ECW crowd begins a "REGAL" chant as Regal requests a mic. Regal then procedes to speak of how ECW used to be about WRESTLING and refers to former stars like Benoit, Guerrero and Malenko and their fine skills. Regal then claims ECW is no longer about wrestling but garbage and gets at the fans for supporting wrestlers like New Jack, Tommy Dreamer and Sabu and claims his goal in ECW is to bring wrestling back to the spotlight of the company and take out all of the "garbage" in ECW. Joey and Gertner hype Regal as we go to break as they promise more of a look at ECW when we return.

Back from break where Joey and Gertner hype both the RVD/Jerry Lynn match and the "last stand for ECW Tag Team Titles" as Dreamer faces the Dudleys. They then do a breif history lesson of the ECW Roster and Champions, which ends with the men not to hold the ECW Title including names like Austin, Foley, Benoit, Guerrero and numerous others and then cut to the current ECW Champion in Taz, who then cut a promo where he claimed he would bring new levels of violence and would continue the path of rage now on national television and challenged any and all wrestler not only in ECW but WWF and WCW to beat him if they could....survive if he let them.

ECW World Television Title Match:

© "Mr. Friday Night" Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn

The ever arrogant TV Champ Rob Van Dam, along with Bill Alfonso debuted his newest nickname, "Mr. Friday Night". Joey and Gertner throughout the match reference the amazing MOTY Canidate between Lynn and Van Dam at Hardcore Heaven and the 2 did not disapoint. The 2 put on a very solid back and forth 24 minute instant classic. Both men brought 2 distinct styles to this match and yet again they meshed perfectly. Big highspots include Lynn hitting a super sunset flip powerbomb onto Van Dam, Van Dam nailing a fantastic somersault plancha off the top rope onto Lynn to the outside and Van Dam nailing a particularly deadly looking Van Daminator onto Lynn who attempted to dive off the ring apron. The match ends with Lynn nailing the Cradle Piledriver onto Van Dam but Van Dam drapes his leg over the rope. Lynn sensing a victory puts Van Dam onto the top rope and goes for a top rope Cradle Piledriver as the crowd screams in anticipation of the move. Van Dam then strikes and kicks Lynn until he falls off which allows Van Dam to nail Lynn with the 5 Star Frog Splash for the victory. After the match, RVD celebrating as always goes face to face with Lynn, who offers his hand to RVD, who shockingly smiles and shakes the hand of Lynn and then raising his hand as Joey is shocked that Van Dam is shaking the hand of Lynn as we go to break.

Back we are with Joey and Gertner who hype next week's main event where we will see the ECW on TNN debut of the ECW World Heavyweight Champion Taz as he defends his title against "No Gimmicks Needed" Chris Candido and the hottest team and sunsequent two biggest punks in the business The Impact Players will take on the team of Nova and Chris Chetti. But we now go ringside where out comes the Dudleys smirkingly holding the ECW Tag Team Titles.

Main Event: ECW World Tag Team Title Titles:

© The Dudley Boyz vs. Tommy Dreamer

The Dudleys stood in the ring ready to pounce as Dreamer came out with the crowd entirley behind him, with his valet Francine by his side. Dreamer ran full on into the ring before he was attacked by the Dudleys. Dreamer began to fight off the Dudleys but the numbers game eventually got to Dreamer as The Dudleys began to take Dreamer apart with more and more punishing blows. After about 5 to 7 minutes of decimating and busting Dreamer open, the Dudleys signal for 3D. D-Von whips Dreamer into the ropes and clutches him but Dreamer telegraphs it an nails a DDT on D-Von. Buh Buh then stands over Dreamer looking to pounce when suddenly the lights in the arena go out. After a minute of so, the lights go back on to see a familar face in the ring...

http://www.onlineworldofwrestling.com/pictures/r/raven/05.jpg

RAVEN, doing his signature crucifix pose, is standing behind Buh Buh, turns him around and NAILS Buh Buh with the Evenflow and the pins Buh Buh for the one...two...three. The crowd becomes unglued as Raven has just won the ECW World Tag Team Titles...with his greatest rivals in Tommy Dreamer. Raven has a big smirk on his face as he's given the titles. Francine is shocked as she enters the ring and looks at Raven. Dreamer slowly rises looking at Franchine wondering what had happen. He turns around as is thrown a belt by Raven who then does his pose yet again. Dreamer's face becomes devoid of color as it fills with utter shock, confusion, and sadness as he collapses to his knees. Raven then bails out of the ring and goes into the crowd as Joey and Gertner are in shock that Raven is back in ECW as the first edition of ECW on TNN comes to a close.

Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Weekly Newsletter: ECW News and Notes

Week Four: August 1999

-Well the ratings are in and "ECW on TNN" is a hit. The show scored a TNN record 1.4 ratings, which not only is a network premier record but also won it's overall timeslot. We've been told of celebrations already taking place within ECW. However it may not all be good. TNN censors were seemingly very iffy on several aspects of the show, most notably the language of commentator Joel Gertner and the Dudleys/Balls & Spike flaming tables spot.

-The return of Raven was seemingly a heavily guarded secret, with only the Dudleys, Tommy Dreamer and Paul Heyman knowing Raven would do the run in. Raven was recently released from WCW and is now able to appear on both ECW TV and PPV's.

-The signing of Steven Regal was also a relativly closely kept secret as Regal recently completed a rehab stint and has told Heyman he indeed clean.

-It seems that the setup for "ECW on TNN" is biweekly tapings, with one half of the show being live and the other half being live to tape, a la the old Hardcore TV setup.

-Speaking of that, matches which took place the next day at The ECW Arena will be shown for next week's show. Those will be admited in later results.

-The Friday and Saturday Night ECW Arena shows also saw several debuts/returns in the company not seen on TNN. As reported 2 weeks ago, FMW's Mike Awesome debuted, defeating John Kronus in a total squash and former ECW World Heavyweight Champion Mikey Whipwreck returned defeating also debuting New Jersey star Bill Wiles.

-We've heard rumors that several ECW stars have been approached by WCW about potential contracts. More on this as we get it.

-Here are the results for this past week's ECW Hardcore TV (the early matches before the live taping on Friday)

Uganda defeated Simon Diamond

Justin Credible defeated Kid Kash

Lance Storm defeated Tom Marquez

Yoshihiro Tajiri, Steve Corino and Rhino defeated Johnny Smith, Nova and Chris Chetti

-Here are the results for Saturday's ECW Arena Show, dubbed "Network Ready"

Danny Doring and Amish Roadkill defeated Kid Kash and Jazz

Simon Diamond defeated Vito Lograsso (Skull Von Crush)

Spike Dudley defeated PN News (yes that PN News)

Yoshihiro Tajiri defeated Johnny Smith, Super Crazy and Little Guido in a International 4 Way Dance

Mike Awesome defeated John Kronus

Mikey Whipwreck defeated Bill Wiles

Balls Mahoney defeated Axl Rotten

ECW on TNN Preview

Last week, the wrestling world was turned upside down when ECW debuted on national television. At the same time, ECW was turned completly upside down as Raven made his shocking return to ECW by shockingly helping his greatest foe and a man whom he hates and hates him back Tommy Dreamer win the ECW World Tag Team Titles. We have learned that this week Raven will be in the house and will hopefully answer some of the many questions left unanswered by his return last week.

However this week's show will see the national television debut of the man many call wrestling's true world champion. For nearly 5 years, fans all over the world have heard the tales of "The Human Suplex" but now you will see him for yourself. The ECW World Heavyweight Champion Taz will defend his title against perenial challenger "No Gimmicks Needed" Chris Candido, who will be accompnaied by one of the most recgonizable faces in wrestling, Tammy Lynn Sytch. Will there be more "Sunny" Says for Candido or will the champ make Candido just another victim.

We will also see a tag team match with huge potential rammifications. For the last few months the young team of Nova and Chris Chetti have made alot of waves in ECW. However their opponents have made an Impact. Seperate, Justin Credible and Lance Storm are two of the most talented, arrogant and disrespectful wrestlers in the business. But the two have formed a union with a mission to make an impact and thus The Impact Players were born. And espically with one of Credible and Storm's greatest in Dreamer now holding the Tag Titles, a win here would do alot for the Players to gain an ECW Tag Team Title shot.

Plus we will also see "The Rookie Monster" Rhino in action.

All this plus much much more only on ECW on TNN

ECW on TNN Results 9-3-99

The show starts off with a quick replay of the end of last week's show where Raven made his shocking return to ECW where he helped his most hated enemy Tommy Dreamer win the ECW World Tag Team Titles. Intro plays and another interior shot of the ECW Arena and it's faithful chanting ECDub. Our announce team of Joey Styles and Joel "Point the direction you want my erection" Gertner are infront of the ECW Banner (a clear sign of post production) where the duo hype the night's show and the main event of ECW Champion Taz vs. Chris Candidio. Gertner however is excited as we see the national tv return of Tammy Lynn Sytch. Ringside we go for our opening contest.

Rhino vs. Tom Marquez

Tom Marquez, the newest graduate of the House of Hardcore, is already in the ring as the undefeated "Rookie Monster" Rhino makes his way to the ring along with his partners in crime Steve Corino and Jack Victory. And right as the bell rings, the match is over as Rhino absolutly destroys Marquez. Match ends with Rhino nailing Marquez with the running spear dubbed "The Gore". Following the match, Corino and Victory put the boots to Marquez and then helps Rhino nail a devistating powerbomb on Marquez. Styles and Gertner put Rhino, Corino and Victory over as a potentially huge threat for the stars of ECW.

ECW breaks out Hype Central again, advertising Anarchy Rulz which is only 2 weeks away live on PPV from the The Odeum in Villa Park, IL and they announce next week they will announce the full line up for the show. Pre recorded promo up next from The Impact Players, where the duo hype themselves up as the team to beat in ECW and how they'll destroy Nova and Chetti later on and win the ECW World Tag Team Titles. Storm procedes to reference the on and off feud he's been having with Jerry Lynn as Credible does the same with Tommy Dreamer. That's not just the coolest...that's not just the best....That's from Calgary (dramatic pause)....Alberta Canada....and that my friends is Justin Credible...

http://myweb.kingnet.com.tw/kenshamrock/img/stormecw5.jpg

Styles and Gertner question the arrogance of The Players but note they do have the tools to back it up. Ringside we go for our next match, showcasing two of ECW's newest arrivals.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/TheWho87EWR/Wrestlers/Rename/SimonDiamond.jpghttp://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/TheWho87EWR/Wrestlers/KyKy/K%20Images/Kid_Kash3.jpg

Simon Diamond vs. Kid Kash

A very nice and relativly quick affair starting with Diamond doing his "Simon has a Problem" deal, complete with his "bodyguard" Dick Hertz. Kash however spoils this and nails a big springboard dropkick. A very quick and well pased match between the two, showing off 2 of ECW's youn guns, even showing Kash nail a particularly solid backflip plancha to Hertz on the outside. However the match to a major turn when midway through, from the crowd came...

http://www.onlineworldofwrestling.com/pictures/r/raven/36.jpg

Raven slid into the ring and nailed Kash with the Evenflow. Diamond looked to be happy and offered Raven his hand, which was promply pulled into an Evenflow. Dick Hertz comes into the ring to defend his man and ends up like the rest, Evenflow'd. A major "ECDub" and "Raven" chant breaks out as Raven does the crusifix pose. We then see Joey Styles enter the ring, who promptly asks Raven why is he back and why did he help Dreamer last week. Raven claims that he returned to ECW because firstly it was his home but also because he knew that with ECW on TNN it would be a time for Tommy Dreamer to be happy, knowing both he and the thing he bleeds is now in the big time, and that his return is to ruin the sense of happiness Dreamer has and how better else to do this then by helping him capture his first title in ECW. Dreamer and Francine promptly come out. Dreamer gets in Raven's face and tells him that he wanted to win his first title in ECW his own way and Raven ruined that for him, but he'll be dammed if Raven as his partner is gonna ruin his title reign and said he would hold onto this title until he died. Raven began to smirk and actually agreed with Dreamer...and then promptly nailed him with the Evenflow. Raven then claimed from now on Dreamer would die a little bit more every day, and soon enough his destiny will be reached...Quote The Raven...Nevermore. Raven smiles as he bails out through the crowd, now with mixed feelings towards Raven as Francine looks in puzzlement as she checks on Dreamer.

Back from break, Styles and Gertner sit in amazement over what just transpired as they hype next week's show, hailing from the Mad House of Extreme; The Elks Lodge in Queens, NY LIVE as we will see the ECW in ring debut of Steven Regal as he faces Axl Rotten and "The Japanese Buzzsaw" Yoshihiro Tajiri in action and the ECW return of FMW Star Masato Tananka as he faces The Mighty Uganda. Ringisde we go for our next contest.

The Impact Players vs. Nova and Chris Chetti

An excelent match up by two of the best teams in ECW. Styles and Gertner put Nova and Chetti over as one of the best young teams in wrestling today, but also heavily put over Storm as a graduate of The Hart Dungeon and Credible as the man who drove ECW legends Shane Douglas and The Sandman out of ECW, as well as the general doushiness of the 2. Very solid back and forth contest, with several highspots, including Nova and Chetti nailing A NovaCain/Missile Dropkick on Storm for the VERY close near fall. The match ends with a big hot tag to Chetti who sprinboard clothesline the Players to the outside of the ring. Chetti goes for a splash to the outside, but Storm's manager, the lovley Dawn Marie, gets on the ring apron and begins to flirt with Chetti. Chetti, ever the ladies man begins to mack it to Dawn, as he's completly oblivious to Storm and Credible getting back into the ring and going for a Double Superkick. As Chetti turns, Nova runs in and breaks up the attempt and a 4 man brawl insues. Nova and Chetti simultaniously goes for clotheslines but are both ducked under by The Players, who then hit stero superkicks. Nova is pushed to the outside of the ring as Credible raises Chetti and nails That's Incredible for the win. The duo and their respective managers celebrate the win as they yell into the camera their time is now as we now cut into Styles and Gertner who hype the upcoming main event of Taz/Candido and segways into a Taz promo, where the ever miserable Taz claims tonight he's gonna take out just a little of his rage out on Candido, as Candido is the last reminant in ECW of the man Taz won the title from in Shane Douglas. He calls Candido a joke and will take him out tonight and is his girl wants to get involved, she'll get choked out too. Beat him if you can...survive if he lets you.

Main Event for ECW World Heavyweigh Title:

© "The Human Suplex Machine" Taz vs. "No Gimmicks Needed" Chris Candido

Candido and Sytch enter to the obligitory hot girl pop, before Candido ruins it by putting down the crowd, but is then cut off by "Path Of Rage" as Taz enters to a HUGE ovation and "Taz is Gonna Kill You" chants. Right off the bat the two begin to brawl. The match was a rare technical brawl as the two went back and forth, but Taz seemingly had the advantage for most of the match. Candido went onto the top rope for the Jersey Jam, but Taz caught Candido going off the top and nails a head and arm Tazplex. Taz promptly ran over to Candido and locked him in the Tazmission for the victory. Taz celebrated in the ring when suddenly out came Judge Jeff Jones to a chorus of boos. Jones claims that he was indeed back in ECW and claimed that Taz was guilty of many things, including being a bad champion and a bitch. Taz was clearly pissed off and begged Jones to enter the ring. Jones said he would, but Jones announced he would, after Taz's death sentence. As this is said, the camera cuts back to Taz, who unbeknost to him has a monster behind him, who is promptly identified as FMW's Mike Awesome. Awesome nails Taz in the stomache with a kick and procedes to nail a devistating Awesome Bomb to the outside of the ring and through the timekeeper's table. Taz is seen to be out, as Awesome picks up the ECW Title, as Jeff Jones proclaims Awesome as the next ECW Champion. Styles and Gertner are in shock as the show ends with the ECW World Champion out as a new challenger stands tall in his debut.

Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Weekly Newsletter: ECW News and Notes

Week One: September 1999

-ECW on TNN's ratings continues to be strong, as the show picked up a 1.3 rating this week, with the main event of Taz vs. Chris Candido as the highest rated segment. Once again we've learned that TNN executives are pressing ECW about content, which includes yet again Joel Gertner and "excessive" violence and the gay undertones of Simon Diamond. We've also learned that ECW on TNN will susposedly be the centerpiece of TNN's new friday programing block dubbed "Friday Night Thrill Zone", where ECW will be sandwiched between Monster Jam and Roller Jam. Seriously.

-The reasoning for the lack of overall booking for Anarchy Rulz is a result of the TV deal and the thus restructuring of most storylines. However, expect for major clarification this coming week for the card.

-Many within ECW are questioning the move of putting Mike Awesome directly into a program with Taz after one real match in the promotion. We've been told however that Awesome is replacing Sid in the feud against Taz as Sid himself said during a Prodigy Chat that he was to feud against Taz for the ECW Title if he didn't leave for WCW.

-We've learned that ECW is tinkering with a format change to the TNN show, putting healthy emphasis on big stars each week.

-For those wondering where New Jack is, he is currently recovering from a knee injury suffered during his last few matches against The Dudleys.

-Interesting ECW House Show notes; Tajiri has been teaming with/accompanying Steve Corino, Jack Victory and Rhino alot recently so expect a full scale mega heel push soon. And also a new stable of undercard guys of Spanish Angel, Tony DeVito, Vito Lograsso and PN News have recently debuted as The Baldies, a take off of the New York street gang.

-Here are the results for this past week's ECW Hardcore TV

Balls Mahoney defeated Vito Lograsso

Danny Doring and Roadkill defeated Johnny Smith and Kid Kash

ECW on TNN Preview

Last week on ECW, we were all shocked when ECW World Heavyweight Champion Taz was layed out by Judge Jeff Jones's newest client, the monsterous Mike Awesome. We have learned that Awesome has put up an open challenge this week LIVE from the madhouse of Extreme, The Elks Lodge in Queens, NY. What will the monsterous Awesome have to say about his actions last week and who will take him up on his challenge.

We will also see one of Awesome's greatest foes in action as FMW in Japan's biggest star and ECW favorite Masato Tananka makes his return to the US. But he will have a mighty task ahead of him, as he faces the 400 pound extreme headhunter Uganda.

2 weeks after his shocking debut in ECW, world renown British star Steven Regal will make his ECW debut, facing one of the Extreme "Garbage" wrestlers he has vowed to take out of ECW in Axl Rotten. Will Regal's promise to rid ECW of "talentless cretians" begin here or will Axl show Regal just what ECW is all about?

We will also see "The Japanese Buzzsaw" Yoshihiro Tajiri in action as he faces Spike Dudley.

All this plus much much more only on ECW on TNN

ECW on TNN Results 9-10-99

Our show starts off with a live shot of a packed Elks Lodge in Queens, NY with Joey Styles and Joel "Just Like A Rubik's Cube The More You Play With It The Harder It Gets" Gertner in the ring welcoming fans to ECW on TNN when suddenly they are cut off by Judge Jeff Jones and Mike Awesome. Jones puts Awesome over as the biggest monster in ECW's history and proclaims him as the next ECW champion. Awesome claims that everyone all over says how great Taz is and how dominant he is, but despite that Awesome has been the most dominant in Japan and formally challenges Taz for a match at Anarchy Rulz and commands him to watch what he does to whoever is stupid enough to answer his open challenge.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/KyKy/M-R/MikeAwesome3.jpghttp://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd153/somenewguy_2007/MikeyWhipwreck.jpg

Mike Awesome vs. Mikey Whipwreck

Very big pop for the returning Mikey Whipwreck, who Styles and Gertner put over as the first ECW Triple Crown Champion and holding victories over Sandman and Steve Austin. However a rather extended squash, with MIkey getting some decent shots in on Awesome, but Awesome for the most part dominating the entire match. Whipwreck attempts a Whippersnapper but Awesome shoves him off into the ropes, nails him in the gut and nails a vicious Awesome Bomb for the win. Following the match Awesome curses heavily into the camera before nailing another Awesome Bomb on Mikey, until "Survive If I Let You" hits as the crowd goes crazy, where we then see Taz with his title in the balcony, who cuts a serious promo on Awesome saying he mad the mistake of his life by jumping him and at Anarchy Rulz he will choke him out and his boyfriend (Jones). We go to break with a wide lens staredown between Taz and Awesome.

Back from break, Joey and Gertner hype Anarchy Rulz, announcing several matches, including a dream tag team match as The Impact Players take on Jerry Lynn and Rob Van Dam, as we go to a pretaped promo with Lynn and Van Dam where Lynn puts over his history and feud with the Players, while Van Dam claims he's just gonna beat another 2 nobodies and do what he does best, be the Whole ****in' Show and says to Lynn that maybe he'll get tagged in, as Lynn looks pissed as Van Dam and Fonzie walks away. Ringside we go.

http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/Bill_Graves/thMasatoTanaka.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/bobinc/Request/BigVito.jpg

Masato Tanaka vs. Vito Lograsso

Lograsso and the rest of Da Baldies made their way to the ring, putting themselves over as the men who took out Uganda. Styles and Gertner show the video of Da Baldies attacking Uganda at a house show and thusly "taking him out" of ECW. Tanaka got a huge ovation in his return as Styles and Gertner put over his epic feud with Mike Awesome. Very solid quick match, where Tananka fought off Da Baldies. Tanaka nailed Lograsso with the Roaring Elbow for the win. Backstage we go where we are shown the debut of Steven Regal, as his debut match is up after the break.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/TheWho87EWR/Wrestlers/KyKy/W%20Images/William_Regal18.jpghttp://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii186/MCMachineGun/EWR/A%20Pictures/Axl_Rotten.jpg

Steven Regal vs. Axl Rotten

A rather good match surprisingly here. Regal got huge heel heat here playing up as an anti extreme English snob. Rotten himself got a decent reaction and hype job by Styles and Gertner as a true extreme pioneer in ECW. Rotten went for a brawl early, brining a chair into the match but Regal howver fought him off and took it technical to Rotten. Regal hit a rather stiff running knee to the head to Rotten. Regal proceded to nail cut throat neck breaker before locking Rotten in the Regal Stretch for the win. Rotten however refuses to break the hold. Once broken, Regal takes the chair which Rotten brought into the ring and procedes to put the chair under Rotten's throat and DRIVE it into the mat before locking him back in the Regal Stretch as a psychotic look is prevealent in Regal's eyes. From the back runs down Balls Mahoney to break it up, but Regal bails out at the last moment as he backs up the ramp way staring at Balls as he checks on Rotten.

Back from break as Styles and Gertner bring out Hype Central, hyping both Anarchy Rulz and more matches and also the Friday Night Thrill Zone. They then announce the main event for next week's edition of ECW on TNN, the night before Anarchy Rulz, as we shall see ECW World Television Champion Rob Van Dam defend his title against Justin Credible. Ringside we go for our night's main event....

http://www.onlineworldofwrestling.com/pictures/s/stevecorino/05.jpg

However before this, out comes a newly blonde Steve Corino, flanked by Rhino and Jack Victory. Corino once again puts himself over as the "true defender against the extreme" in ECW and "The King Of Old School". Corino then claims he had been looking for a man whom he and his consituates could count on and help further their cause and such and they have found him, and introduce one of the night's combatants in "The Japanese Buzzsaw" Yoshihiro Tajiri.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/tristramwcw/Tajiri.jpghttp://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/TheWho87EWR/Wrestlers/Rename/SpikeDudley2.jpg

Main Event: "The Japanese Buzzsaw" Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. "Little" Spike Dudley

A surprisingly back and forth matchup here. Tajiri got huge heat as he is now sided with Corino and his group. The crowd was 100% behind Spike here as he fought valiantly with Tajiri and his uber stiff kicks. Spike was able to nail the Acid Drop on Tajiri, but Corino and Victory got on the ring apron to distract him. SPike quickly ran over and knocked both men off the apron and went to pin Tajiri, who then BLASTED Spike in the face with the green mist. Tajiri then quickly rose back up and nailed Spike in the ribs with a stiff kick before ending the match with the Kick of Death. Following the match, Corino and his posse came into the ring. Corino cut another promo, caliming his group would be the most dominant in ECW history and then proceded to challenge ECW World Tag Team Champions Tommy Dreamer and Raven and then totally throwing the 2 under the bus and verbally destroying them. This leads to Dreamer coming out and attempting to take it the group but the numbers eventually get to him. Suddenly, "Come Out and Play" by the Offspring hits and out runs Raven who nails Victory and Tajiri with Evenflows before the group clears the ring. A bloodied Dreamer rises to see that Raven has saved him and the 2 stare down....when Raven then kicks Dreamer in the gut and nails the Evenflow. Raven then bails to the outside has he poses in the entrance way as the show closes on a bloody Dreamer as Styles and Gertner put over the bizzare love hate relationship between the ECW World Tag Team Champions.

ECW on TNN Results 9-17-99

A breif video shows the ending of last week's show is played as we then cut to Joey Styles and Joel "I bust more nuts than a peanut factory" Gertner infront of the ECW banner, as the duo hype ECW's PPV event Anarchy Rulz live in 2 days from Chicago and how the road for Anarchy Rulz ends tonight.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/TheWho87EWR/Wrestlers/KyKy/D%20Images/Danny_Doring.jpghttp://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/TheWho87EWR/Wrestlers/KyKy/R%20Images/Roadkill.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h172/Crychon/Wrestling/WWE/LittleGuido2.jpghttp://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/TheWho87EWR/Wrestlers/KyKy/T%20Images/Tracy_Smothers.jpg

"Dastardly" Danny Doring & Amish Roadkill vs. The FBI

A decent enough battle between two heel teams here. Doring and Roadkill got the obligitory hot girl/whore pop as Ms. Congeniality escorted them to the ring. The entire FBI, including Tommy Rich made their ECW on TNN debut. Styles pressed that Rich and Smothers aren't Italian and the closest they've ever been to Italy is the Olive Garden. Guido did a majority of the work for the FBI and the duo seemingly had their way to an easy win against the 2 youngsters. Guido tags Smothers, who signals for the superkick, but Doring ducks under and nails the Bareback and tags in the big Roadkill who flattens all 3 FBI members. With Guido on the outside, Smothers walks into the Buggy Bang from Doring and Roadkill to give the youngsters the win. Following the match a clearly frustrated Guido makes a B line for the mic. Guido claims he's tired of losing because of 2 fake Italians. He's tired of being viewed as a joke despite being the best wrestler in ECW. He then announces he's forming a new FBI and Rich and Smothers are both out. Rich and Smothers are now pissed and begin to surround Guido but suddenly a huge mountain of a man enteres the ring and nails both Rich and Smothers with huge forearms. Guido then lands a Kiss Of Death (Impaler) on Smothers and then a superkick on Rich. Guido then holds the respective legs of both Rich and Smothers as this monster nails 2 HUGE splashes on the fallen vets. Guido yells at his now former stable mates as he and this monster leave the ring to heavy boos, on the guy's shoulders weirdly.

http://www.onlineworldofwrestling.com/pictures/s/salgraziano/01.jpg

Styles and Gertner put over Guido's new FBI and this new monster he's brought in. Styles once again put over Anarchy Rulz and hypes the card, specifically the Taz/Awesome Match and replays the events from last week following Awesome's win over Mikey Whipwreck. We then go to two taped interviews with Taz and Awesome. Awesome with Jeff Jones claim that according to Illinois state laws, midgets can't hold world titles and at Anarchy Rulz the true monster of ECW will sentence Taz to death by Awesome Bomb. Taz was clearly pissed in his promo where he calls Awesome as a big job guy and Jones as a bitch who never paid dues in business. He wonders if ECW has run out of competition for him. He claimed at Anarchy Rulz he'd choke both of them out and make Awesome and Jones names as another 2 in his victim list.

Back from break, more hype for Anarchy Rulz and next week's show as we'll see the fallout from Anarchy Rulz. Now promos hyping our upcoming main event of Justin Credible/Rob Van Dam. Classic Van Dam high promo where he put himself over as "The Whole ****in' Show" and as so good he should be the one called Justin Credible. Credible puts himself over as the main who'se taken out Sandman, Shane Douglas and numerous others and Van Dam will just be another career ended by Credible and The Impact Players.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/TheWho87EWR/Wrestlers/KyKy/R%20Images/Rob_Van_Dam7.jpghttp://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb202/Turd_Life/JustinCredible.jpg

Main Event for ECW World Television Title: © "Mr. Friday Night" Rob Van Dam vs. Justin Credible

EXCELENT contest here. Credible along with as Styles refered to him "The One Man Enoutrage" Jason entered to a huge heel reaction, flanked by Dawn Marie and Lance Storm. Van Dam came out to an enormous reaction from the fans. Styles and Gertner hyped how this is the first time Van Dam and Credible have faced each in one on one action. A very solid back and forth contest between the 2 with several impressive highspts including Van Dam hitting a huge front flip sneton onto Credible, Storm and Jason, Credible catching Van Dam's rolling thunder with a powerbomb and Van Dam nailing a top rope Van Daminator. The match ends with Credible hitting a superkick and siginaling for a Super Thats Incredible. However once on the top rope, Van Dam sneaks out and kicks Credible off the top and literly a SECOND after Credible hits the mat Van Dam delivers an highlight reel worthy 5 Star Frog Splash for the win. Van Dam celebrates before Storm and Jason run in but are quickly fended off by Van Dam and Jerry Lynn who quickly runs down to even the odds. Lynn and Van Dam stare down their opponents as we go to a music video hyping Anarchy Rulz as our show closes with a final pitch for the show ending with the ending of last week's show of a bloody Tommy Dreamer looking at Raven.
