TCW: A Quiet Retirement

Another week draws to a close, but don't be sad - Saturday Night Showcase is still to come, and what a packed week we have for you. Let's see what's on tap...

In the opening slot, Champagne Lover will be providing a lucha libre exhibition, facing off with fellow champion in Mexico, Ultimate Phoenix. The one thing for sure is that you don't want to look away - you could miss anything.

Another match that's sure to excite pits recent returnee Danny Fonzarelli against a man who's admitted to sabotaging rivals' championship prospects, the School of Tradition's Frankie Dee. Dee has impressed in recent weeks, but is still looking for a victory that will put him on the map. Could this match move him one step closer?

Hard-Hitting Champion Texas Pete has been dubbed one of TCW's 'Freedom Fighters' of late for joining Tommy Cornell's stand against Generation Omega. But his title belt means he has other obligations, too, and this Saturday he must face off against another School of Tradition student, UK Dragon. Pete will want to end Dragon's challenge decisively as a message to the two men who'll compete for his title at Summer Showdown.

He had a surprising win on Tuesday, and he's right back into competition - Canadian Elemental faces another Darkwave member in Ian Harris. Of course, he also faces the threat of Edd Stone, as Stone has taken an interest in the young prodigy - a dangerous thing to happen to you.

Six-Man tag team action is scheduled to follow, with the Kreed joining with mentor Sam Keith against arguably the largest trio in professional wrestling - Tyson Baine joins up with M.A.D. Can skill and guile overcome power?

Mayhem Midden has scheduled a match between the British Lions and the New Wave, and has also booked time on the show to speak about this match. We imagine this means the contest will have tag team contendership implications; not long ago, the idea of the New Wave winning this one would have been unimaginable, but not long before that the roles were reversed. This Saturday night, who's going to triumph?

Tag team action continues into the main event; Jack Bruce liases with Matthew Keith. Their opponents? Tommy Cornell and Sean McFly. This one looks to be a contest for the ages.

Prediction Key:

Champagne Lover vs. Ultimate Phoenix

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins

Texas Pete vs. UK Dragon w/ Laura Huggins (non-title)

Canadian Elemental vs. Ian Harris

Kreed & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. M.A.D. & Tyson Baine

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. New Wave

Jack Bruce & Matthew Keith vs. Sean McFly & Tommy Cornell

Champagne Lover vs. Ultimate Phoenix

Squash

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins

Not sure what to expect here but I go with the younger guy this time.

Texas Pete vs. UK Dragon w/ Laura Huggins (non-title)

UK Dragon is just a jobber so I don´t see him going over Pete even in non-title match

Canadian Elemental vs. Ian Harris

Elemental just beated Bach so he shouldn´t have much troubles with Harris, unless there is an interference that is

Kreed & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. M.A.D. & Tyson Baine

Lots of big guys on the other side, sadly though non of them aren´t doing much.

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. New Wave

I go with draw here simply because I cannot decide.

Jack Bruce & Matthew Keith vs. Sean McFly & Tommy Cornell

McFly & Cornell just looks slightly stronger pairing here though this could well go the another way.

Champagne Lover vs. Ultimate Phoenix

Phoenix isn't about to start beating people on Lover's level.

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins

JOBBER!

Texas Pete vs. UK Dragon w/ Laura Huggins (non-title)

ALMOST JOBBER!

Canadian Elemental vs. Ian Harris

CanEl's push is big enough to go over Sammy clean, he can easily go over Harris.

Kreed & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. M.A.D. & Tyson Baine

Because their monster mystique isn't as big as the men themselves.

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. New Wave

Because they'll cheat.

Jack Bruce & Matthew Keith vs. Sean McFly & Tommy Cornell

The two biggest American names in pro wrestling. Yeah, I'll vote for them.

Congrats on 2,500 posts and replies.

Prediction Key:

Champagne Lover vs. Ultimate Phoenix

CL is probably significantly more over and has a bigger future.

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins

Dee seems like the logica pick, but the comment about him looking for his first win makes me think it's not going to happen yet.

Texas Pete vs. UK Dragon w/ Laura Huggins (non-title)

Can't fool me with the non-title.

Canadian Elemental vs. Ian Harris

He just beat Bach, and Harris is no Bach.

Kreed & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. M.A.D. & Tyson Bain

It's Art Reed.

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. New Wave

Subtle shenanigans.

Jack Bruce & Matthew Keith vs. Sean McFly & Tommy Cornell

Bruce is the weak link here and takes the pinfall.

Champagne Lover vs. Ultimate Phoenix

An exciting lightweight squash match to open things up.

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins

It doesn't put him on the map, though.

Texas Pete vs. UK Dragon w/ Laura Huggins (non-title)

I don't anticipate a Texas Pete-UK Dragon feud happening any time soon. So I imagine this is another keep-busy fight.

Canadian Elemental vs. Ian Harris

This match doesn't make sense if CanEl is just going over again... he already beat a better version of Harris last time. Darkwave shenanigans occur!

Kreed & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. M.A.D. & Tyson Baine

With every midcard monster, you have to draw the line and say "he's not THAT good", or else people end up wondering why he doesn't just squash the champions. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the line... in tag team form.

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. New Wave

The New Wave cheat again. Poor Lions... they really are starting to look like gatekeepers, aren't they?

Jack Bruce & Matthew Keith vs. Sean McFly & Tommy Cornell

I don't pick against McFly or Cornell without a reason. No reason here: Keith is only tenuously a main eventer, and I doubt Bruce even is one.

Bear in mind that they've been in TCW less than twelve months. They've yet to become a truly unbeatable, dominant force, but inside of a year they've become viable top-level tag contenders in a division which includes Kreed and The New Wave. Being gatekeepers for The New Wave is like being Main Eventers anywhere else!

Champagne Lover vs. Ultimate Phoenix

Lover has been getting the stronger push.

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins

Dee seems to have some focus, Fonzarelli has been reduced to be being a glorified jobber.

Texas Pete vs. UK Dragon w/ Laura Huggins (non-title)

Non title because Dragon is a JOBBER

Canadian Elemental vs. Ian Harris

Canadian Elemental just pulled off a shock win over Bach, he isn't going to be dropping one to Ian Harris.

Kreed & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. M.A.D. & Tyson Bain

Oregano has it spot on here, Baine and co are midcard monsters...they beat up the jobbers but can't get it done against anyone of any real worth/ability.

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. New Wave

I'll go with the general consensus that the New Wave pull off the win through some subtle shenanigans/cheating/whatever you wish to call it.

Jack Bruce & Matthew Keith vs. Sean McFly & Tommy Cornell

How can a team of McFly and Cornell possibly lose ? Cornellverse megapowers FTW!!

Champagne Lover vs. Ultimate Phoenix</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

It's surprising how fast a pace these two can keep up, but this one is explosive from the off. Phoenix has grasped what he needs to do to begin winning fans within TCW – he wows the crowd with his offence, he rallies well when attacked, and he clearly tries.</p><p> </p><p>

The fans in attendance are always happy to see that kind of spirit in a performer and Lover looks to be having trouble with him throughout. In the end, however, it's the Champagne Breakfast that finishes things, with Phoenix eventually forced to tap.</p><p>

Lover has just left the ring when <em>Shout at the Devil</em> begins to play. Mayhem Midden appears, Charlie Thatcher by his side, the big man impassively scanning the crowd for signs of Generation Omega.</p><p> </p><p>

“I'm here for some quick business,” Midden begins. “Generation Omega have their usual competition bans in effect, certainly, but that doesn't mean the champions among them are allowed to miss their chance to defend their titles once a month.” He frowns. “Personally, I think it's going to be time to look at that rule soon. Someone screws about like that, they deserve the consequences.</p><p> </p><p>

“But for now, I've got to sort it. Hawkins has his match lined up, but GenOme don't have theirs. We'll settle that tonight – the British Lions are due to take on the New Wave, and whoever wins is going to get their shot at the Tag Team Championships at Summer Showdown. </p><p> </p><p>

“Good luck to all four of you, and whoever wins, good luck taking the belts off those two egotistical clowns.”</p><p> </p><p>

He hands the microphone to the ever-watchful Thatcher and the two head backstage once again.</p><p>

Poor, poor Danny Fonzarelli. Even after a break to rejuvenate and work on his technique, he's not getting the crowd behind him.</p><p> </p><p>

Indeed, the crowd are mostly absent during this contest, but Frankie Dee still gives it his all, winning handily with the Shinanju Kick to put Fonzarelli away.</p><p>

<span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/MatthewKeith.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Matthew Keith, backstage, steps out of a room, glistening with sweat, a towel over his shoulder, with the view into the room through the open door showing the gym equipment on which he's clearly been warming up.</p><p> </p><p>

He takes a swig from a plastic bottle of some sports drink, the brand not quite visible, and smiles slightly to himself, starting off down the corridor – and the smile abruptly dies away.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/SamKeith.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Sam Keith is standing there, arms folded, a sour expression on his face. His son returns the expression and the gaze, taking another drink from the bottle. For a moment, the two are silent. Eventually, Sam speaks, his voice soft, his tone weary.</p><p> </p><p>

“The Mist.”</p><p> </p><p>

Matthew says nothing.</p><p> </p><p>

“You remember what I told you when I taught you the secrets of the Mist?”</p><p> </p><p>

Matthew shrugs. </p><p> </p><p>

“Carrying that stuff in your mouth... it's toxic, Matt. It's poisonous. Screws with your breathing, messes up muscle tone, all sorts of things...”</p><p> </p><p>

Matthew says nothing. Sam's voice almost sounds defeated.</p><p> </p><p>

“You don't need it, Matt. You're better than that. I taught you and your brother how you make the Mist because I wanted you to understand wrestling, to have a proper sense of the history of our sport.</p><p> </p><p>

“But it's just not a good idea, Matt. And you can win without it.”</p><p> </p><p>

Matthew says nothing, and his father's shoulders slump. “Matt... why are you doing this?”</p><p> </p><p>

Finally, the younger Keith speaks. “Because of you. You and Johnny and Amy and even Greg... you just put me aside, you just didn't care.</p><p> </p><p>

“I go off on my own and I start winning my own way, I start making noise with some of the matches I've wrestled, and all of a sudden you're coming back telling me I'm better than that, and you know what?</p><p> </p><p>

“I KNOW!” he explodes, his voice almost cracking into a scream rather than a bellow of frustration, the emotion right under the surface.</p><p> </p><p>

“I know I'm better than that, and you know it too, and you still put me aside. And **** you, Dad. You should've known what you were doing, but you still did it. So just... just **** you.</p><p> </p><p>

“You left me behind. Mom didn't. I'll make her proud the way you did, I don't need to be the kind of hypocrite you've turned yourself into.”</p><p> </p><p>

He brushes past his father, stalking off, and Sam Keith watches him go. There might just be a tear forming in his eye, before he shakes his head.</p><p> </p><p>

“This is breaking your mother's heart,” he says, his voice barely above a whisper.</p><p> </p><p>

Texas Pete vs. UK Dragon w/ Laura Huggins</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

UK Dragon spends a few moments before the match starts talking with Laura Huggins, the TV feed not picking up the advice. Nonetheless, it's easy for the viewers to see that Laura is the one giving advice, and she's being more than a little firm about it. It looks, in fact, like UK Dragon isn't particularly keen on that advice.</p><p> </p><p>

Pete, meanwhile, limbers up at the other side of the ring, physically fit, raring to go, bouncing on his heels. As the bell rings, he launches himself across the ring – the Hard-Hitting Champion may have embraced the fans and their support, but his attitude has not otherwise changed. </p><p> </p><p>

He hammers into the smaller wrestler, going for an early, demonstrative pin – but Dragon shows some wherewithal, rolling backward and out of the ring. </p><p> </p><p>

He takes a few moments to recover, which is a mistake – Pete hits the far ropes and launches himself through them at speed, almost crushing the diminutive wrestler with his tope suicida. By this stage, it has to be said, the crowd are already beginning to show their appreciation, and as Pete rolls Dragon into the ring, it looks like this is going to be a simple case of domination for the champion – but Dragon regains his feet as Pete enters the ring, and he snaps off a grounded dropkick to the champion's head, followed by a headscissors as Pete picks himself up. </p><p> </p><p>

A ropewalk lariat looks to impress, but the champ catches him and dumps him with a fallaway slam. The next couple of minutes are fairly even before Pete again starts to pick up momentum, finally sinking UK Dragon with the Lone Star Drop for the win.</p><p>

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">Texas Pete defeated UK Dragon</span></p><p>

The feed goes to a pre-prepared video next; the production team have put together a slick mashup of iThink's underlying heavy beat with Balls to the Walls' enthusiastic vocals and crunchy guitar, and the two tracks play like that, more or less side by side, over a montage of clips from various music shows covering the rivalry and covering the sales figures of the two albums. </p><p> </p><p>

After a few moments, the montage changes, showing members of both bands in action within the wrestling ring, charting their successes against each other and in general. Harry and Amber Allen, plus Zimmy, are particularly heavily featured given their non-headliner status.</p><p> </p><p>

As the song draws to its end, the screen shifts again, showing two tall bars beginning to grow, labelled according to band, clearly measures of their sales. They rise strongly, with Painful Procedure's early rise being much faster, but as the first week comes to an end, Darkwave's sales spike, catching up and eventually overtaking the rock band. The text then reminds anyone watching that the contest will run for another week, ending at Summer Showdown.</p><p>

Canadian Elemental vs. Ian Harris</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The second match between Elemental and a Darkwave man this week begins almost as strongly as the first; it's clear that Harris sees a chance to make waves by succeeding where the more established Sammy Bach had failed. </p><p> </p><p>

Nonetheless, his opponent is able to turn the tails on him soon, and CanEl continues to innovate new and exciting combinations to keep the crowd interested, as well as sending Harris sprawling with a running no-hands plancha to the outside that Springsteen knows enough to refer to as the Thriller Killer. </p><p> </p><p>

Emboldened, CanEl climbs up to the apron again, and he looks for the Thrill Seeking Missile – but then he catches sight of something, or rather, someone.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/EddStone_alt6.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Edd Stone is marching confidently down the entrance ramp in an inflatable suit similar to those used by spoof sumo wrestlers. An 'Everything About Me Is Giant' Tana T-shirt has been slit open down the sides and draped over the suit.</p><p> </p><p>

Elemental drops down to the outside and heads toward this new threat. He looks for a dropkick, though Edd's suit absorbs most of the impact, and he dips his hand under the T-shirt, producing – something – which crashes into the masked Canadian's skull, dropping him – and earning an instant disqualification.</p><p>

Troy Tornado's walking backstage, and the camera is moving with him. He sees something up ahead, out of shot, and quickens his pace. “Tommy,” he calls, and sure enough, the company owner appears in shot as Troy catches up with him. “You saw the match,” Tornado offers. “Got through even with Gorgon getting involved. So what do you say?”</p><p> </p><p>

Cornell doesn't look happy. He sighs, drawing in a deep breath before he;s willing to speak.</p><p> </p><p>

“You're good enough,” he says. “Hell, you've beat me a few times without cheating, that puts you one up on pretty much anyone in Generation Omega as far as I'm concerned. But Gorgon ran in... and Troy, she's not the problem.</p><p> </p><p>

“Right now you've got a lot of people who want to cost you any match you're involved in. I'm not worried about Gorgon – you ban her from interference, she'll listen. But just last month, Darkwave showed they're going to stick their nose in even when you ban them – and that could cost us. I can't afford it.</p><p> </p><p>

“I'm sorry, Troy. But you're going to have to wait. I promise I'll make some match for you and Sean somewhere along the line. I just can't afford it now.” He offers a faintly conciliatory smile. “Deal with Darkwave and we'll talk, OK?”</p><p> </p><p>

A dejected Tornado sighs. “You got someone in mind for your third spot?”</p><p> </p><p>

“Yeah,” Tommy nods. “I'll be honest, I thought about taking it myself for a while, but Remo seems to want to get his hands on me – and I don't see why I should make it easy on him. He can wait.” A smirk. “If he can win this one, after all, he can try and earn it. I've got other **** to be dealing with.”</p><p>

vs.</p><p>

<span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/AmericanBuffalo_AJA.jpg</span><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/MaratKhoklov.jpg</span><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/TysonBaine.jpg</span></p><p>

M.A.D. & Tyson Baine</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The Bombshell's boys are clearly more than a little on edge as they get ready to begin this match. Considering the sheer amount of muscle they're up against, it's hard to blame them – any one of their three opponents can easily cause injury to just about anyone, and with the Kreed relying on speed and Sam Keith one of the oldest men on the roster, that threat is a very real one.</p><p> </p><p>

The sheer power on one side is hard to ignore, and even with all the wrestling savvy up against them, there's no way for, say, Reed to guarantee that a particular hold won't simply be overpowered.</p><p> </p><p>

M.A.D. link up together early; they cut Sam Keith off from his son and his student, and the working over he receives is a serious one. He tries to tag out – oh, how he tries – but there's always something to cut him off, and Kreed can only break up pinfalls, they can't tag themselves in with so much muscle in the way.</p><p> </p><p>

It looks pretty clear, indeed, that the big men are going to win. The American Buffalo nails Sam with the Stampede, then tags out to Khoklov. A Moscow Lariat follows, and Baine demands his chance. For a few moments, it seems that the giant Russian won't make that allowance – but he does, grudgingly. It looks like Sam Keith has nothing in his future but the Hades Bomb.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/MatthewKeith.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Before that can happen, however, Matthew Keith pulls his father out of the ring. There's a huge uproar from the crowd – but Ray Johnson has his hands full, as Greg Keith is in the ring, obviously hoping to buy his father some time.</p><p> </p><p>

Matthew gives his father just long enough to realise who pulled him to safety, then his head snaps forward and he sprays the Asian mist into his father's face – not the green that he's used to win matches so far, but the red substance, known to cause excruciating, burning pain.</p><p> </p><p>

It is, nonetheless, the only thing that kept his father from suffering the loss – and in the ring, Art Reed nails a spectacular Dark Matter on Tyson Baine, Kreed capitalising by squeaking out a roll-up pin. </p><p>

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. New Wave</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Two very good tag teams here, and a crowd that seems more than a little divided. The speculation from the announce desk, early in the match, focuses mostly on which of these teams would do better against GenOme; over the last few months, the Lions have the better record, but on the other hand, GenOme have less prior experience wrestling the Wave, which might prove a true advantage.</p><p> </p><p>

And then the pace starts to pick up, staying grounded and devoted mostly to the ground game, but the frequency and intensity of counters and new holds picks up. </p><p> </p><p>

When Guide comes in, the pace shifts again; the former DaVE man clearly knows that if he were to try going hold for hold with the Lions, he'd be overwhelmed by the British pair's mastery of the mat – but he has the speed, and while Morgan in particular has started to throw hands with gusto, Guide is better with his fists and capable of nailing aerial manoeuvres with staggering precision.</p><p> </p><p>

Guide starts, slowly, to turn the tide, not allowing either Lion to lock him down. The School of Tradition duo find an alternative, quick tags allow them to keep Guide rushed off his feet. After four minutes on his own, he's flagging... and that leaves him vulnerable. O'Curle brings him down and the pair get to work... but Guide manages to extend a foot and Scout reaches it, tagging in!</p><p> </p><p>

The refreshed warrior vaults the top rope and comes down feet-first at Morgan. He ducks O'Curle, coming in with a lariat, and launches him with a German suplex before tossing him clear of the ring, coming off the ropes – and Morgan has him scouted! The Lions man meets him with a low-down sack Fry tags as “apparently a rugby tackle” and takes a moment to check on his partner, still recovering outside the ring. He's promptly nailed from behind with a high knee by Guide, and the New Wave scoop Morgan up. </p><p> </p><p>

He's on Scout's shoulders as Guide hits the far ropes, coming off with a high-speed neckbreaker as Scout sits out in something like a Samoan drop. Scout rolls over into the pinfall as Guide rolls out of the ring, and the victory – and #1 Contendership – goes to the New Wave.</p><p>

Jack Bruce & Matthew Keith vs. Sean McFly & Tommy Cornell</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Pure determination is written on the face of all four men. For McFly, he has an undefeated streak to preserve; for Cornell, his record of late needs big wins; Matthew Keith's issues have been well documented already, and Jack Bruce... well, setting aside Darkwave's issues with Painful Procedure, Bruce's best-received outing in TCW resulted in a narrow loss to Cornell – and Jack will clearly want that win back, even if he needs allies to get there.</p><p> </p><p>

Matthew Keith starts for his side with Cornell starting for his, with both men beginning carefully, cagily as they look for some kind of opening; they circle a few times, both men trying to close but only if they can find the advantage, and Fry rightly calls it; this is very reminiscent of the opening to the Keith/Speed match recently – that is, until, as they circle, Matt decides to shift the pace; he wheels and swings, knocking Sean McFly off his place at the tag ropes with a punch.</p><p> </p><p>

That certainly wakes the crowd up – and it leads to Alanis Springsteen noticing something. She calls for the production truck to verify, but Cornell has closed with Keith, and the camera is very much focused on that as the company owner looks to demonstrate his superiority – and finds that he's up against a skilful and determined opponent. After a couple of exchanges end in standoffs, Tommy looks to raise the tension with his own gambit – an open-palm slap across Matt's face.</p><p> </p><p>

Outraged, Matthew charges blindly and Cornell gets the crowd to really react by getting a huge flapjack, Matthew getting easily above Tommy's head before he begins to fall.</p><p> </p><p>

Finally, the production crew get a short breather, and the cameras are directed to check on Springsteen's observation – someone had tied both tag lines at one corner together, extending the range. The corner is occupied now by Sean McFly, and had been occupied by the New Wave.</p><p> </p><p>

Matthew gets back up and Tommy looks to slam him – and Keith somehow, out of nowhere, counters that into a headscissors takedown, diving across the ring to make the tag.</p><p> </p><p>

In comes Jack Bruce, and a charging elbow takes Cornell down. He meets the company owner on the rise with a second running elbow, and a third as he rises. A fourth is attempted, but Cornell's ready for it, meeting him with a dynamic judo flip. </p><p> </p><p>

McFly is tagged in, and the 1995 and 1998 SWF World Champion stands face to face with the 2007 SWF World Champion for a moment. They stare each other down, then close in and lock horns, with McFly getting the better of the exchange and getting a Russian leg sweep. As he tries to follow up Bruce fires back with rights and lefts until a left is blocked; for a little while they exchange punches until the American Tiger has had enough, switching gears and whipping Bruce to the ropes. </p><p> </p><p>

As Jack hits them, McFly is right behind him, and the dropkick that sends the Darkwave man from the ring is crisp, perfectly executed, and greeted with roars of triumph. Sean promptly hooks Matthew Keith into the ring with a huge hip toss over the top rope, lines him up, and sends him to the outside next to Bruce with a running lariat.</p><p> </p><p>

In comes Cornell, and the two look at their opponents. They're not quite in sync, but it's very close to stereo as they hit the far ropes and come forward, looking for a big double-dive – but Keith and Bruce are experienced wrestlers, and still nimble, and they dive out of the way. McFly grabs top and middle ropes, breaking his momentum with a swinging crescent kick; Cornell has a little more trouble, but he's able to hook the top rope and turns from a dive to land on the apron – and Matthew Keith dashes past, arm out for a lariat between apron and bottom rope. </p><p> </p><p>

He takes Cornell out by taking his legs out from under him while the American Tiger is rolling Jack Bruce back into the ring. McFly goes for the pin, but Bruce counters immediately to a cradle of his own, one, tw- no! Sean rises back to his feet and comes back in but eats a boot to the gut as he does so; snap DDT from Bruce which gets another two.</p><p> </p><p>

Jack looks to follow that up with a suplex, but McFly twists in midair, landing smoothly behind him. An atomic drop follows, and as Jack Bruce looks to regain his balance, Sean tries a bulldog – but this is something McFly has done many times over his career, and Jack is ready for it, turning the attempt into a Blue Thunder bomb. </p><p> </p><p>

Jack tags out and Keith scrambles to the top rope, coming off with a flying forearm to bring the thorn in Generation Omega's side down. Rather than attempt another cover, Keith picks him back up, whips him to the corner, and literally <em>runs up his chest</em>, backflipping off to meet McFly as he stumbles forward with a stiff lariat. A tag back out to Bruce and the beatdown continues.</p><p> </p><p>

With Sean isolated, Cornell faces a spell at the turnbuckle – a time which seems all the longer and more agonising when your team's not winning. Eventually, Jack Bruce calls for the New York Minute but McFly shoves him clear, almost falling backward to make the tag.</p><p> </p><p>

In at speed comes Tommy Cornell; Bruce takes a boot to the gut and a butterfly suplex, and Matthew Keith charges in his turn, being met with the synchronised dual knife-edge chop Cornell calls the Blade Chop. Another meets Matt on his way back up, then he grabs the wrist and whips him to the corner.</p><p> </p><p>

Jack Bruce has just about recovered, but Cornell meets him with a running DDT. GUI:LT TRIP ON BRUCE!</p><p> </p><p>

The crowd sound loud, but when McFly cuts off a rescue dash by Matthew Keith by snagging the Stone Ankle Stretch out of nowhere, the difference between that crowd response and the arena exploding becomes clear. The holds are applied for a good fifteen, twenty seconds, but as Matthew rolls onto his back and kicks McFly loose, Jack Bruce manages an equally tough challenge – he finally claws the ropes with one hand, forcing a break.</p><p> </p><p>

Chaos ensues in the next couple moments with all four men in the room, and it's debatable whether there's a legal tag but by the time things start to calm down it's the other partners who've become de facto legal.</p><p> </p><p>

This time, McFly nails the atomic drop/bulldog combo, and he rolls through the bulldog impact and comes up pointing at the turnbuckle. </p><p> </p><p>

Sensing his intention to contribute the From Canada With Love to the night's proceedings, the crowd go wild, but as he reaches the top Jack Bruce races along the apron, using the top rope for leverage for a flying kick to knock him through the announce desk.</p><p> </p><p>

With Sean effectively out of it, Tommy Cornell finds himself in a dire predicament, two-on-one against two of the more dangerous competitors in TCW. He doesn't seem to have many options and ultimately tries to kick his way back into it, but Bruce catches his leg long enough for Keith to sneak in with a kick to the thigh. </p><p> </p><p>

That puts Cornell into real trouble; he finds himself on his back as these two go wild. But, with about two minutes remaining on the clock, Tommy is sent into the ropes – and Sean McFly gets a hand to his back, coming in off the blind tag. Dropkick to Keith! Jack Bruce gets backdropped out of the ring, and Sean stalks Matthew. He looks for the Delorean Driver – and gets a face full of the Asian Mist!</p><p> </p><p>

Matt tries his own Delorean Driver! ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Somehow, Sean managed to find the energy to kick out, much to the fans' relief. </p><p> </p><p>

Matt pounds the canvas twice with clenched fists, exasperated, and hauls the blind man back to his feet. He looks for the Neutron Plex.</p><p> </p><p>

It's a move Sean McFly hasn't faced since his turn-of-the-millenium move away from SWF. Somehow, however, despite being blind, he has enough muscle memory to block it, twist, and counter – DELOREAN DRIVER! ONE, TWO, THREE!</p><p>

Is that a morale thing? Fonzie's kind of old to have been in development, I would have thought. Fonzie's actually pretty chipper at the moment. He went into dev, as much as anything, on the offchance, to get a bit more work in than I was giving him and pick up some wins due to relative overness - and he has improved somewhat, in areas, so he's getting a bit of a trial again.

That said, his contract's up in a little less than two months, so the trial is very much going to decide whether he sticks around.

...As to Khoklov in a low priority team, that's actually a long-term plans thing; Marat is good, but he needs one or two areas to improve before his results will be quite what I want. Tagging with Buffalo should help them both as they work the other teams, and any angle featuring those two will get them and their opponents some much-needed overness.

Marat was always going to have roughly this course; this is also why he was booked as a special attraction early on, with a couple of multi-month absences to learn from Nemesis in FCW, then brought into the tag team. Right now, he's a special attraction; in the future, he could be right at the top, with the right training.

Tuesday July 16th 2009

Dreams... they're the lifeblood of so many stories. The ones people remember. Childhood dreams turned sour, like Sean Deeley's beef with Tyler and Stone... Dreams of surpassing another, played straight or spoiled again – Wolf Hawkins and Tommy – all these things tie into our simple storylines in no small part because they're a fantastic way to make the audience relate.

To me, wrestling is a sport; it's a sport with odd variations, but the basic rules of the stories that underpin it are the rules that make any sporting story compelling. Our advantage is that we can make sure the story has the right ending, that it hopefully won't feel like a let down.

Sure, this doesn't cover the more modern sports-entertainment storylines – but even they often draw on it. How different is Edd Stone's mad set of mind games from the stunts played by the Harlem Globetrotters?

That was a story, but so is wrestling. At their heart, though, sport stories ask the fans to take someone into their heart and make them feel larger than life – make them someone they can put their hopes in. This star's ability is what they rely on, after they're hooked in by some connection.

When you do that, however, you risk your stars becoming... well, stars; they can lose their connection due to no longer feeling 'one of us'.

The job is to stop that happening, to make people still feel a connection. And their dreams, their childhoods, their loves, their friendships strengthened or gone bad – these are ways to do that.

What we're doing with Troy here – reminding people of his dream to partner Sean McFly, one he's spoken about outside the company, discussed in interviews – it's all setup for other dreams.

Sometimes you have a program that you just have to make as big, as memorable, as you can – the fans demand it. And sometimes, that means other items have to be used to build to and reflect it.

Tommy Cornell has a dream. That dream is one that makes most sense to reach with Wolf Hawkins. And that program is one that we'll be using to define that pair from here on out, regardless of who's face and who's heel, even if they eventually reconcile and team together again.

And to make it that big, we need to give it everything. All the weight we can put on that match, all the build we can give it.

Still, there's time. It's July now, and Summer Showdown is more or less booked, on paper if not on screen. We have another five months to fill before the month we pull the trigger... and a lot can be done in five months. A newcomer can become world champion in five months, handled properly.
