TCW: A Quiet Retirement

Recommended Posts

A B+, Iron Man, main event... and you still get an A?

But good show taking a chance on younger talent (well, Reed's old enough, but...)

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. Kreed w/ Blonde Bombshell Let's see the Lions step up

TCW International Championship

Edd Stone © vs. Canadian Elemental vs. Giant Tana Easy defence for Edd

Easy Riders (Billy Fonda, Peter Hopper, Sayeed Ali) w/ Carl Batch vs. Machines (Brent Hill, John Anderson, Marc Speed) After an A*, and given how much Speed has improved for you, this seems an easy enough choice.

TCW All Action Championship

Shingen Miyazaki © w/ Baroness Emily vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins I just can't take Frankie Dee seriously

TCW Tag Team Championship

GenOme © w/ Phil Vibert vs. New Wave I'm torn here, but I think GenOme retain to give the group reason to feel confident

TCW Hard Hitting Championship - NO HOLDS BARRED

Texas Pete © vs. Chris Rockwell vs. Matthew Keith Only question is, is this title beneath Keith already? If so, Rockwell has been on a quest of late, and a win here could see him step up.

TCW Womens Championship

Gorgon © vs. JeriLynn Stone Not seen anything to suggest Gorgon's time is up yet - although Stone seems likely to be the one to take her down... Stone or Bomb, anyway

GENERATION OMEGA RETURN TO COMPETITION/PHIL VIBERT MUST WRESTLE TOMMY CORNELL

Generation Omega (Joey Minnesota, Marc DuBois, Remo Richardson) w/ Phil Vibert vs. Aaron Andrews, Sean Deeley & Seam McFly w/ Laura Huggins Six of my favourite wrestlers right here... Well, five and DuBois, but I'll let myself get caught up in the awesomeness

TCW World Heavyweight Championship

Wolf Hawkins © w/ Phil Vibert vs. Johnny Bloodstone w/ Blonde Bombshell Close, probably not clean, but the title stays with GO

<p>Tag match felt like an X-Division match, which...I don't think fits anyone in the match.</p><p> </p><p>

That said, I think I like...crap, forgot the name. Elite Express? They have some of my favorite move names. Excellent match.</p>

<em>Edd has produced well, and this angle has legs.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Dee's chemistry issues are a mark against him here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>The New Wave would feel like more of the same, and GenOme need to kept as strong champions.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<p>Prediction Key:</p><p>

<strong>British Lions w/ Laura Huggins</strong> vs. Kreed w/ Blonde Bombshell</p><p> </p><p>

<em>This does two things: it firmly establishes the Lions as the next #1 contender for the tag straps and can step into a solid program with GenOme, and Kreed's loss helps highlight Matt's rise before his eventual collapse and redemption.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW International Championship</p><p>

<strong>Edd Stone ©</strong> vs. Canadian Elemental vs. Giant Tana</p><p> </p><p>

<em>CE will be kept strong so as to set up a future 1v1 PPV title match.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Easy Riders (Billy Fonda, Peter Hopper, Sayeed Ali) w/ Carl Batch vs. <strong>Machines (Brent Hill, John Anderson, Marc Speed)</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Quality wins out here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW All Action Championship</p><p>

<strong>Shingen Miyazaki © w/ Baroness Emily</strong> vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Dee just doesn't do anything for me, plus the previously mentioned chemistry issues, not seeing a reason to move the belt here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW Tag Team Championship</p><p>

<strong>GenOme © w/ Phil Vibert</strong> vs. New Wave</p><p> </p><p>

<em>I love the New Wave. But they're not the best team to take the titles from GenOme.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW Hard Hitting Championship - NO HOLDS BARRED</p><p>

Texas Pete © vs. Chris Rockwell vs. <strong>Matthew Keith</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>The whole 'Mysteries of the Mist' storyline makes this work. I think Matt will be a transitional champion, as he crashes from Mist abuse soon after this, but this should not damage Matt to the point that he can't be credible with the bigger belts.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW Womens Championship</p><p>

Gorgon © vs. <strong>JeriLynn Stone</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>I can't go against my girl; it all depends on how well her numbers have been managed behind the scenes. I would pontificate further, but I think I'll save that for a PM to PS.</em></p><p> </p><p>

GENERATION OMEGA RETURN TO COMPETITION/PHIL VIBERT MUST WRESTLE TOMMY CORNELL</p><p>

<strong>Generation Omega (Joey Minnesota, Marc DuBois, Remo Richardson) w/ Phil Vibert</strong> vs. Aaron Andrews, Sean Deeley & Seam McFly w/ Laura Huggins</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Makes more sense from a story perspective; love the long slow build here.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

TCW World Heavyweight Championship</p><p>

<strong>Wolf Hawkins © w/ Phil Vibert</strong> vs. Johnny Bloodstone w/ Blonde Bombshell</p><p> </p><p>

<em>If this isn't an A* match I'll cry.</em></p>

<p>British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. <strong>Kreed</strong> w/ Blonde Bombshell</p><p> </p><p>

<em>This match is about the Lions. Either they pull out some heel tactics, or they lose and Tyler gets upset with them. I'm going to go with the latter -- because I think this plot could go on a while yet, because I don't want to see the Lions cheat, and because they're facing my favorite tag team.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW International Championship</p><p>

<strong>Edd Stone</strong> © vs. Canadian Elemental vs. Giant Tana</p><p> </p><p>

<em>As surprisingly decent as Tana has been, I don't see him as a titleholder. CanEl looks promising but not more than that (yet.) And yeah -- if Edd drops this belt, it won't be in a three-way match.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Easy Riders (Billy Fonda, Peter Hopper, Sayeed Ali) w/ Carl Batch vs. <strong>Machines (Brent Hill, John Anderson, Marc Speed)</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>The Riders are lucky most of the top tag teams are faces... the fact that they're big brawling heels in a division that tends to be short on both true heels and brawlers makes them unique, and it means their spot in the upper tag echelon is secure. But it doesn't make them equal to the Machines.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW All Action Championship</p><p>

<strong>Shingen Miyazaki</strong> © w/ Baroness Emily vs. Frankie Dee w/ Laura Huggins</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Dee hasn't proven himself in the ring yet. And the building KOBRA tension really needs this belt to sell it... it's one thing if a couple of the minor members of a midcard stable rebel, it's another thing if one of them holds the All Action title. If Marlowe does get involved, maybe Marlowe takes the title by some weird fluke? I don't know... but I do like some Marlowe, and sending his ongoing storyline into even more chaos could be cool.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW Tag Team Championship</p><p>

GenOme © w/ Phil Vibert vs. <strong>New Wave</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Full-scale heel turn time for the New Wave. Giving Gen Omega a legit grievance about being cheated out of a title puts an interesting wrinkle in the plot. Meanwhile, DWN needs to get moving on that singles career he's been boasting about.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW Hard Hitting Championship - NO HOLDS BARRED</p><p>

Texas Pete © vs. Chris Rockwell vs. <strong>Matthew Keith</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Is the mist a "hold" or a foreign object? If it's the latter, Keith may take the DQ here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

TCW Womens Championship</p><p>

<strong>Gorgon ©</strong> vs. JeriLynn Stone</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Apocryphal Stone has been mostly lurking around in mixed tag matches and such, not building the kind of resume that would suggest a title bid.</em></p><p> </p><p>

GENERATION OMEGA RETURN TO COMPETITION/PHIL VIBERT MUST WRESTLE TOMMY CORNELL</p><p>

<strong>Generation Omega (Joey Minnesota, Marc DuBois, Remo Richardson)</strong> w/ Phil Vibert vs. Aaron Andrews, Sean Deeley & Sean McFly w/ Laura Huggins</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Partially because you are not making Cornell-Vibert the semi-main event, partially because this match ban has really kept Gen Omega (DuBois in particular) from developing as characters lately. It's been around long enough... time to move on.</em> </p><p> </p><p>

TCW World Heavyweight Championship</p><p>

<strong>Wolf Hawkins</strong> © w/ Phil Vibert vs. Johnny Bloodstone w/ Blonde Bombshell</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Too soon... and while Bloodstone remains a credible main eventer, I don't think he gets two consecutive face title runs. Not saying he'll never be champion again, just saying that nobody loses a title and wins it back unless he's the face of the company. And Bloodstone is probably no. 3 at this point among the good guys alone, behind Cornell and McFly.</em></p>

The theme song for <em>Summer Showdown</em>, <em>Showdown</em> by Pendulum, is still playing as the pyro gives way to a video highlighting certain issues – Wolf Hawkins and Johnny Bloodstone on their respective paths to the World Heavyweight Championship match, Phil Vibert's arguments with Mayhem Midden culminating in the assault on Midden, the effective unstoppability of Remo Richardson and Sean McFly heading into their collision in the big six-man tag tonight, and then flashing through the other matches on the card – perhaps dwelling longest on the Womens' Championship.</p><p>

Kreed w/ Blonde Bombshell</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

These four men were responsible for what is arguably not just the best match of this year but also the best match of TCW's history just a few months ago, and now they lock up once again. </p><p> </p><p>

With the crowd hotter for the longer-advertised matches, the atmosphere never quite reaches those dizzying heights, but nonetheless, the fans wake up as these two teams start fast and get faster. </p><p> </p><p>

It's another excellent match; not quite on the level of their previous encounter, but nonetheless a fantastic match, with the end coming when Greg's attempted Neutron Plex sees Merle O'Curle land on his feet, take Greg's out from under him with a scything forearm, and apply the Celtic Wreath to secure the submission.</p><p>

Merle and Walter line up together afterward, and as Greg is picking himself off the mat, Merle steps forward and offers his hand. Art and Greg exchange glances, and -</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/EricTyler.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

<em>Bad To The Bone</em> starts to play, and Eric Tyler stalks to the ring, clearly in a rage, getting between the two teams.</p><p> </p><p>

He growls something – something all but incomprehensible – to the Lions, getting in their faces, then turns back to the Kreed and starts yelling.</p><p> </p><p>

Then Tyler throws a punch, catching Art Reed napping with a solid shot. Greg steps forward – and Merle O'Curle pulls Tyler back, out of Greg's reach.</p><p> </p><p>

And Walter Morgan, abruptly, trips Tyler, clamps down the Wigan Wrench on him...</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/Acid_alt2.jpg</span><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/UKDragon.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The place erupts. And moments later, chaos ensues. Acid is the first down to the ring; his indy-circuit-and-DaVE sparring partner, Art Reed, takes a beautiful dropkick, and as if it was choreographed, UK Dragon sails through the space gravity had just had Acid vacate – dropping the leg across Morgan's head.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/FrankieDee.jpg</span><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/FreddyHuggins.jpg</span><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JDMorgan.jpg</span><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JoelBryant.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Frankie Dee and Freddy Huggins are in the ring, too, as Tyler picks himself up, and the numbers are against the two tag teams – and getting worse, as Global Tradition both slide into the ring. Something of a beatdown begins, much to the crowd's displeasure.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/ShooterSeanDeeley.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Sean Deeley slides into the ring with two chairs. He leaves one behind and clobbers Acid with the other, then kicks his spare to the now-freed Greg Keith, who opens up alongside Deeley.</p><p> </p><p>

With the weapons, with the reinforcement, the Kreed, the Lions, and Sean Deeley make good their escape.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/totalbanner.jpg</span><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/CarlBatch.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The camera goes back to the interview area backstage, and Carl Batch is there, checking his suit and tie one last time to make sure they're all in precisely the order he wants them in. That done, he shoots a broad beam at the camera.</p><p> </p><p>

“You know, it's been a while since this whole thing started, but if there's a rule me, Billy, Peter and Sayeed have learned in this business, it's that no one cares when all you can do is win the battle.</p><p> </p><p>

“To make an impression, you've got to go to war.</p><p> </p><p>

“When Billy and Peter came to TCW they came as weapons. A woman's grudge. And they ran through two-time tag team champions in Painful Procedure. Now, she squandered them, and I had to come in, had to give them the boost they needed, and they became champions – and then we got put aside, and a whole bunch of new kids have been trying their hand.</p><p> </p><p>

“Well, you want to be on top, you gotta make an impression.</p><p> </p><p>

“Tonight, we're cleaning the biggest clock in TCW tag wrestling. Tonight, we're up against the Machines, three on three, on the big stage... and tonight, the war's going to end.</p><p> </p><p>

“Last time my boys went to war, the enemy never got to wrestle again.</p><p> </p><p>

“So sit back, strap in, and prepare for surrender. Because tonight, the war ends.”</p><p> </p><p>

Edd Stone © vs. Canadian Elemental vs. Giant Tana</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

There's a slight clash of styles here but that's not really what the contest is about; the big man is a danger, the others are fast, dynamic, often dangerous through sheer speed.</p><p> </p><p>

Tana acts as a cornerstone to this contest; Edd and Elemental's aerial duel goes on around him, but ever in danger of the big man snatching one of them out of the air and slamming him to the ground with tremendous impact. In the meantime...</p><p> </p><p>

Well. Edd doesn't appear to be the only one who's enjoying himself during this contest. Tana bides his time, has a little fun, and hits hard when he can. It becomes clear early on that he's going to play a decisive role; the big man stays on his feet, near the middle of the ring, and neither smaller man can possibly keep shoulders to the mat for three without Tana intervening.</p><p> </p><p>

And that means that, rapidly, toppling him becomes a crucial factor in anyone's strategy.</p><p> </p><p>

Edd tries the Edd-Renaline Shot, after nailing Elemental with a Party's Over; it doesn't work. He tries a Party's Over; Tana catches him and gets the Big Fat Samoan Squash.</p><p> </p><p>

And that nearly does the trick, but Elemental recovers in time to break it up. Back to the grind they go, until CanEl sees an opening. With a little commotion, Jason Azaria alerts viewers that something's happening backstage, with cameras going to see it. “What the ****'s going on?” asks Floyd Bowman.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/ShingenMiyazaki_alt2.jpg</span><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JungleJack_alt1.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

And then we get the connection they were looking for. Shingen Miyazaki has been caught on his own. The All-Action Champion is under a vicious assault from Jack Marlowe near the catering table.</p><p> </p><p>

While Miyazaki is fighting back, it's clear he's gotten the worst of it so far – but then, it seems likely Marlowe jumped him from behind. He hammers the champion mercilessly, while the announce team spell out his motivation; an obvious payoff from Frankie Dee.</p><p> </p><p>

Miyazaki looks to block a piledriver onto the concrete by snagging Marlowe's ankle, clearly looking for his famous – and fearsome – ankle lock; Jack Marlowe shows a way of breaking that hold you couldn't get away with mid-match; releasing the attempt at the piledriver, he delivers a vicious-looking low blow that leaves Miyazaki doubled over. Picking him up again, he looks for one of the tables lining the corridor - </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/FumihiroOta_PS.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

A bokken crashes down across his back. Shingen stumbles away as Fumihiro Ota rains down shot after shot on Marlowe, who seems, while certainly feeling the blows, less than fazed by this. He turns back, blocking a swing aimed for his face by taking it on a raised arm, and drives forward with a punch, backing Ota back a step.</p><p> </p><p>

A second bokken strikes home, however, across his chest, as Thunder Snake also joins the attack.</p><p> </p><p>

Faced with these odds, Marlowe sneers. He forgoes the attempt to slam Miyazaki through a table; instead, on his way out, he charges him, smashing him into a door before making himself scarce.</p><p> </p><p>

The All-Action Champion looks more than a little the worse for wear.</p><p>

Machines</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

These six men have clearly been getting very ready for this. All six men let it all hang out, with the Machines outwrestling their opponents, the Riders fighting back with sheer power. Marc Speed's head is snapped off the mat by a GBH Driver from Ali, but Hill is there to rescue him.</p><p> </p><p>

Ali gets driven to the mat with an Ammo Dump, but Peter Hopper cuts that out; Anderson narrowly escapes an Emergency Stop moments later, countering by, of all things, landing a victory roll on Fonda; Hopper promptly kicks his head off to break the pin.</p><p> </p><p>

The Complete Package nearly takes Hopper's head off, but again the Easy Riders are in place to break that up – but in comes Marc Speed, looking for a Cross Armbreaker on the weakened shoulder. Ali tries once again for a GBH Driver on him, but this time the newest Machine breaks free, dumping him with a release German suplex. </p><p> </p><p>

The fans are agog throughout, and it's a good twenty minutes before the end; when Peter Hopper again falls to the Complete Package, Hill manoeuvres his opponent's shoulders to the ground while the hold is applied, squeaking out a three count before Fonda can break it.</p><p>

Tyler accompanies Dee, rather than Laura Huggins, leading to a lot of speculation from the announce desk on the earlier events. </p><p> </p><p>

Miyazaki, as he comes out, still looks hurt from the prior match, walking unsteadily but standing tall nonetheless. </p><p> </p><p>

The staredown before the match, given how new Dee is, is somewhat electric, and as the bell rings, Dee goes on full speed assault against Miyazaki, looking to capitalise on his injuries.</p><p> </p><p>

Shingen has no recourse but to fight back, look to defend himself, and he works hard, aiming to defend, to slow down, to create an opening.</p><p> </p><p>

He just keeps fighting – and in the end, he gets an opening in the most unexpected way possible, catching Dee's foot as he goes for the Sinanju Kick and rolling through to apply his ankle lock.</p><p>

Vibert looks a little nervous, just after that, as he and the champions make their way down to the ring. The New Wave, having already entered to a solid reaction and limbered up, look happy to be there; they take one last chance to talk strategy before Guide exits the ring, with technician Scout starting off against GenOme's kick expert, Frankie Perez.</p><p> </p><p>

What takes place is a very solid, well-supported, piece of tag team wrestling, though it's not on a par with some of the recent tag team exhibitions. GenOme certainly acquit themselves well, though the New Wave push them almost to the limit – but unfortunately, after Newton is hit with the Wave of Mutilation, Ray Johnson breaks the count.</p><p> </p><p>

It seems Guide – accidentally, he protests – had a foot on the bottom rope. In the meantime, Newton makes it across the ring, tagging out, and in comes Perez. One hook kick later and the champions can proudly claim that they've retained again.</p><p>

Texas Pete © vs. Chris Rockwell vs. Matthew Keith</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Hard punches and nasty holds are the order of the day here; Pete has the power to threaten either other man with a single shot, and the resilience to shrug off a lot of what they can do. Nonetheless, everyone brings their game. Pete pops the crowd early with another of his trademark through-the-ropes dives, wiping out Keith as he looked to trap Rockwell's arm in the guardrail. </p><p> </p><p>

Keith, indeed, is the target in the early going, with both others following him around the outside of the ring, keeping up a steady string of punches to the head to disorient him. In the end, however, it can't last; Keith ducks one of Rockwell's swings, gets behind him, and shoves him headlong into Pete, escaping into the ring.</p><p> </p><p>

Rockwell's temper nearly boils over at four or five points during the match, but he manages to keep it under control – for now, at least. Toward the end it's Rockwell who's really going for Keith; a lower-body assault has Pete slowed down.</p><p> </p><p>

Keith throws a stray lariat, which Rockwell dodges easily – which may have been the plan; Eugene Williams crumples to the ground. Turning, Matt is already going through the ritual of summoning up the green mist – but Chris spots that coming; he yanks Pete in between them, letting him take the brunt of the mist, then shoves him headlong into Keith, sending the young prodigy tumbling from the ring.</p><p> </p><p>

A fast single-arm DDT later, Rockwell clamps down the Furusawa Armbar on the nearest target – Texas Pete – and, from what the seasoned announce team are saying, pushes the hold to a nigh-illegal point, right where bones are about to snap.</p><p> </p><p>

Autumn beams toward the camera.</p><p> </p><p>

“G'day to you all watching,” she begins. “I have with me TCW's two hottest bands, and this month they've been going head to head in a whole new way – through the singles chart.</p><p> </p><p>

“Well, those singles are still available – but the contest is over tonight. Let's see what we've got, shall we? And gentlemen – good luck.”</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JeremyStone.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The camera moves elsewhere backstage. Dressed in a casual blazer and sporting dark glasses, Jeremy Stone, who is not scheduled to compete tonight, moves with purpose backstage towards the locker rooms. He arrives at a door, pauses a moment to collect his thoughts, and raps his knuckles against the door with a fast staccato.</p><p> </p><p>

The door opens and Kate Dangerous’s head pokes out of the opening.</p><p> </p><p>

“Hi,” begins Jeremy. “Is JeriLynn decent?”</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JeriLynnStone.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Kate nods and pulls the door open. Jeremy enters and the camera follows. We see JeriLynn seated on an exercise mat, bent over her extended left leg in a deep stretch. She looks up to acknowledge her father, but remains silent.</p><p> </p><p>

Jeremy removes his glasses. His eyes are red and slightly swollen.</p><p> </p><p>

“Look…I know the past few weeks have been…difficult.”</p><p> </p><p>

JeriLynn sits up. “Difficult? They haven’t been for me, Dad. I’ve been in TCW four months now, and in that time I’ve yet to be beaten. And I haven’t needed to cheat for any of those wins. Pity you can’t say the same in either case.”</p><p> </p><p>

Jeremy’s eyes narrow, the only outward indication that his daughter’s words had any effect. “I think you know what I meant.”</p><p> </p><p>

JeriLynn switches legs and gradually starts to stretch the opposite leg. “Oh, you mean difficult for ‘us’? Well, I’d love to have a heart-to-heart daddy-daughter talk about that, but I’m about to go into the fight of my life with your hired muscle, who you and Edd have spent more time with than you have with me since I’ve been here. In fact, the last time we really talked you freakin’ tried to horn in on my first singles victory on national TV, eh!”</p><p> </p><p>

Jeremy’s face reddens, but JeriLynn continues.</p><p> </p><p>

“I’m going to beat her tonight, Dad. I know HOW to beat her. Every single thing you and Aunt Vickie have taught me has prepared me for this.”</p><p> </p><p>

JeriLynn picks herself up off the floor and stands in front of her father. “I would love to say, ‘Come and be in my corner tonight, Dad,’ but I can’t – I don’t know if I trust you in this scenario. So do us both a favor and watch from back here. This is MY time, MY title, MY contribution to this family’s legacy.”</p><p> </p><p>

Jeremy stares stoically at his daughter. After a pause, he responds in a barely audible whisper, “As you wish…but before I go, I have something for you.”</p><p> </p><p>

He reaches into his pocket and proffers its contents to his daughter. We see in his hand a black armband with pink embroidery:</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="color:#FF00FF;"><strong>SAS</strong></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

“Please wear it…on your left arm.”</p><p> </p><p>

JeriLynn’s eyes glisten as she fights back tears. She reaches out for the armband, her hand trembling ever so slightly. She stares at the lettering for a moment. She looks up at her father before slipping the armband on, and the two embrace silently.</p><p> </p><p>

Someone in the production truck does the only sensible thing and gives them their privacy, cutting back to ringside. Horatio Dangerous looks over at his broadcast colleagues. “I-I’m sorry,” he stammers, “but I’m missing something. What’s SAS?”</p><p> </p><p>

“Not what. Who,” Jason replies somberly. “Simone Aubé-Stone, Jeremy’s wife and JeriLynn’s mother. Two weeks from now will be the fifth anniversary of the day they lost her to a car accident.” </p><p>

Gorgon © vs. JeriLynn Stone</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The armband is very obvious as the challenger makes her way down to the ring. Gorgon, meanwhile, doesn't change her usual approach one bit; there's the slight smirk that's the closest she comes to expression as she heads down to the ring. </p><p> </p><p>

From the off JeriLynn assaults the bigger woman, looking determined, looking focused, but there's a problem; nothing she throws at Gorgon is getting her off her feet – until a missile dropkick manages it, but JL can't get more than a one-count off that before Gorgon powers out. </p><p> </p><p>

Still, she perserveres, and toward the end she even nails the Girl's Best Friend – but Gorgon stays on her feet.</p><p> </p><p>

Frustrated, JeriLynn charges, and in that frustration she doesn't have a counter to Gorgon's powerful offence. A punch takes her down, and Gorgon mauls her for a few moments before tossing her outside the ring.</p><p> </p><p>

Rolling out after her, Gorgon has very much departed from her usual strategy. She seems rattled by the sheer level of success JeriLynn had managed to that point - </p><p> </p><p>

Gorgon uncovers the concrete below the ring.</p><p> </p><p>

The crowd don't like what they sense coming. Neither does referee Sam Sparrow.</p><p> </p><p>

That doesn't stop Gorgon. She delivers a brutal Hydra Bomb to the concrete, then simply climbs back into the ring, waiting out the ten count.</p><p> </p><p>

Backstage goes the camera once again, and Autumn Gleeson once again flashes that smile at the camera. Ricky Dale Johnson, wearing a referee's stripes, stands next to her.</p><p> </p><p>

“RDJ, we're just moments from your big moment tonight. You're going to be in the middle of a six-man tag contest, and there's a lot riding on this one.</p><p> </p><p>

“Your thoughts, please.”</p><p> </p><p>

Ricky smiles that confident, charismatic smile, but his eyes are thoughtful as he begins. “I've been run over by Remo Richardson before now,” he begins. “Big guy, hell of a hitter, and the nasty thing about him is that he's more than just a heavy hitter. He knows wrestling.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Joey Minnesota is one of those guys everyone tipped for the top from the beginning. He has most of the tools, and he's starting to understand how to use them all together. That already makes him dangerous. When he has it down he may be unstoppable.</p><p> </p><p>

“They called Marc DuBois the Can't Miss Prospect. He's lazy, but he can afford to be – he understands how to get inside people's heads. Let him get to you and he'll have you fighting yourself, then all he has to do is pick the moment and he'll come out on top.</p><p> </p><p>

“Phil Vibert has an eye for talent. He's put together a lineup that sounds unstoppable. But Generation Omega has one problem.</p><p> </p><p>

“I'm not convinced that those three men can coexist within the ring. Every time DuBois tags out, his opponents get a breather from that mind game. Remo and Joey both feel they have a lot to prove. In a six-man game, spending too much time in on your own is the ultimate mistake.</p><p> </p><p>

“Up against them you have Aaron Andrews, and you don't want to underestimate the man with two pinfalls over Tommy Cornell – the man whose cover ended the Syndicate. He's been an International Champion, he's shown he can stand his ground against another mind game master in Edd Stone, and he's improving every day.</p><p> </p><p>

“You've got Sean Deeley, taking a stand as he always does for what wrestling should be. This kid's got an incredible gift for the mat game. Like Joey, he has all the tools, and he knows what he's doing with them. As counters for Minnesota go, Sean may be the magic ingredient.</p><p> </p><p>

“And then there's the American Tiger. If we match him up against Remo, McFly doesn't have the power, but he's made a career out of making that not matter. More to the point, since he came to TCW no one's been able to beat him.</p><p> </p><p>

“My job in there is to keep order and make the final decision. I'm not saying it's going to be easy. But the team that wins will have earned that win. If they try to cheat, I'll make sure they don't get away with it.”</p><p>

Aaron Andrews, Sean Deeley & Sean McFly w/ Laura Huggins</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

As the match begins, with all six men in the ring, the two trios line up, staring one another down. DuBois keeps up a constant stream of smack talk in Deeley's face; Remo just looks bored.</p><p> </p><p>

But it's Aaron Andrews who opens things – he throws a forearm strike that snaps Minnesota's head back and goes to press the advantage.</p><p> </p><p>

It's the signal that the others need. There's a series of forearm shots from everyone concerned, as everyone throws shots back and forth, staggering one another. Before too long the battle starts to spill out of control, and it's already clear that RDJ will have his work cut out. He watches Minnesota and Deeley exchange punches, and in the background, Marc DuBois headbutts Andrews to slow his assault, grabs the chair from under the timekeeper, and swings hard – a replay of the chair sandwiching Andrews' arm against the ringpost will also show it fly out of DuBois' hands – which is lucky, as RDJ turns to face that direction almost immediately. He has, however, no evidence.</p><p> </p><p>

Minnesota and Remo bundle Deeley into the ring and Generation Omega go to work on him with brutal strikes and quick tags as the match proper gets under way. Andrews is seen trying to shake life back into his arm in the background, with McFly's eyes carefully on the action.</p><p> </p><p>

Generation Omega's game plan of isolation is simple and obvious, but with DuBois hoisting him on his shoulders for what will presumably be some kind of suplex, things are about to go wrong; Deeley gracefully rolls out and into a neckbreaker, much to Laura Huggins' obvious overjoyed reaction. He lunges across the ring, tagging in McFly, and the crowd roar with approval.</p><p> </p><p>

The approval, however, is shortlived; in comes Remo too, and the supreme specimen flattens McFly with that animalistic spear. DuBois, meanwhile, tags in Joey Minnesota, who scrambles in and looks for a powerbomb; on reflex as much as anything, McFly keeps rolling up and over, taking Minnesota down into the first pin of the match. One, tw- Minnesota kicks out firmly.</p><p> </p><p>

He promptly whips McFly to the ropes, meeting Sean as he rebounds with a standing dropkick that posts him over the top rope and to the mat below. A moment's celebration gets ruined for him when he turns around and eats a punch from Aaron Andrews. In response, Joey grabs the arm that took the chairshot earlier and falls on his back, snapping the weakened shoulder across the top rope. </p><p> </p><p>

Enraged, Aaron comes into the ring. His good arm fells Minnesota with a clothesline; he turns, nailing another, and then a third, as the crowd start to truly roar approval. On the next pass, he scoops Joey onto his back, looking for the Game Breaker – but Joey slips off his back, shoves him into the ropes, and meets him on the rebound, looking for a Minnesota Salute – only to find Aaron has that scouted, blocking it and shoving the newest Generation Omega recruit clear. </p><p> </p><p>

He dives back for the turnbuckle, tagging Deeley back in.</p><p> </p><p>

Sean comes in to find Minnesota's tagged out himself, and the big Remo is in the way. Sean looks him up and down, swallows, and nods, launching into Generation Omega's big man with a flurry of elbows. Remo almost lazily brings his right hand up, sending Deeley crashing back against the ropes with a single uppercut.</p><p> </p><p>

The laziness of that move is swiftly belied; he goes from a standing start to full charge as he senses weakness, but much to his surprise, Deeley has enough of his wits about him to deliver a backdrop, sending him tumbling to the mats outside.</p><p> </p><p>

Perhaps carried away, Sean scrambles up to the top rope and leaps out with a double-foot stomp. While Remo more or less shrugs it off, inside the ring, the action has moved on. Sean McFly charges the Generation Omega corner, bringing DuBois to the mat with a crossbody before blocking Minnesota with a kick to the gut – flying headscissors! McFly hooks the leg, going for a pin – one, two, TH- NO!</p><p> </p><p>

Aaron demands to be tagged in, and he comes in hard, facewashing Minnesota in the corner before meeting a charging DuBois with the spinebuster! The crowd roar with approval as he covers – ONE, TWO -NO!</p><p> </p><p>

Minnesota yanks Andrews up, punches him, then hits a spinkick almost out of nowhere. He lifts Aaron onto his shoulders for the Empire Spiral, but Andrews has it scouted, turning it into a crucifix pin – ONE, TWO – DuBois breaks it up with a dropkick.</p><p> </p><p>

Marc of Excellence follows from DuBois, but they don't go for the cover yet. Instead, Minnesota once again looks for the Empire Spiral - </p><p> </p><p>

Sean Deeley takes his legs out from under him with a chopblock. Andrews lands on top! One - </p><p> </p><p>

Remo yanks Andrews from the cover, scoops him up, and hits a huge release slam, tossing Andrews a good four feet, perhaps more, before he hits the mat. Deeley receives a huge boot as a follow-up. </p><p> </p><p>

On the outside, Marc DuBois has set up a table, and even as Bowman reminds the crowd that “That's ****in' illegal!” he pops up onto the apron, beckoning. Remo shoves Andrews toward him and DuBois looks for a Marc of Excellence through the table – but Ricky Dale Johnson drags Andrews back to safety!</p><p> </p><p>

The crowd roar their approval as the much-loved TCW icon steps through the ropes onto the apron. Wide-eyed, DuBois panics, but Johnson snaps his head back with a punch, grabs him, and jumps - </p><p> </p><p>

SOUTHERN JUSTICE TO A TABLE ON THE OUTSIDE!</p><p> </p><p>

Seeing the ref inconvenienced, Joey Minnesota takes a run up and punts Andrews in the crotch. Remo simply punches McFly and Deeley both down.</p><p> </p><p>

MINNESOTA SALUTE ON ANDREWS!</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/FloydBowman_jhd2.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Remo moves to continue the work, but Floyd Bowman's in the ring now. He gets in Remo's face, and the big man just shrugs – but McFly pops up behind him – STONE'S THROW ON REMO!</p><p> </p><p>

Minnesota moves to intercept but Deeley comes through with a discus forearm. He promptly applies the Front Choke Lock as McFly, reflexively, pins Remo. Floyd Bowman drops to make the count. ONE, TWO – NO! The Supreme Specimen powers out, then kips up as if to prove a point. He whips McFly across the ring, calling for the Destroyer, and Aaron Andrews appears out of nowhere -GAME BREAKER ON REMO!</p><p> </p><p>

In comes DuBois, breaking up the Front Choke Lock with a dropkick and picking Andrews off with an armbar to the injured shoulder, further strained by hitting the Game Breaker.</p><p> </p><p>

Remo climbs back to his feet. He launches Deeley off his shoulder and over the turnbuckles into the ring post, busting him open, then turns around to eat a dropkick by McFly. Remo drops back into the turnbuckle and McFly sees opportunity!</p><p> </p><p>

As Andrews frees himself – with a Game Breaker to force DuBois to release the hold – Sean McFly points backstage and tries for the Girl's Best Friend – but Remo catches him, turning it in midair into a Destroyer! RDJ is back in the ring, and moves to count the pin – ONE, TWO, THRE- </p><p> </p><p>

At the last possible moment, Aaron Andrews breaks the pin. He fends off an assault from Minnesota, then sidesteps a spear from Remo that puts Joey down.</p><p> </p><p>

The crowd are roaring. Aaron's already delivered the Game Breaker to Remo once, and no one else is moving. Deeley's gushing blood. He lifts Remo for the Game Breaker - </p><p> </p><p>

Remo moves with the flip, landing on his feet. Azaria's screaming about the athleticism as Remo shoves him to the corner, then staggers him with a massive avalanche splash.</p><p> </p><p>

He boosts Andrews to the top rope and goes up after him. With no one else stirring, Remo Richardson soars from the top turnbuckle to land the Super Destroyer on Aaron Andrews.</p><p> </p><p>

He hooks the leg, not that he needs to. RDJ drops to position, and his eyes are locked on Remo's as he makes the count. “They both know he could count to ****in' twenty and it wouldn't make any difference,” Bowman offers, sourly.</p><p>

Wolf Hawkins © w/ Phil Vibert vs. Johnny Bloodstone w/ Blonde Bombshell</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Coming on the heels of a conflict like the previous one, this match was always going to look at least a little overshadowed.</p><p> </p><p>

Nonetheless, these are two superb wrestlers and they step up to the challenge with everything they have. Over twenty-five minutes, Wolf and Johnny proceed to put on a stellar competition. Hawkins tries, early on, for the Full Moon Rising and eats the same counter that Art Reed used the night before; on kicking out, however, he bails to the outside and he and Vibert spend a few moments in consultation before returning.</p><p> </p><p>

The champion fights this match pretty close to entirely fair, save for a couple of moments where he'll grab a handful of tights for leverage, but it's not quite enough – until, right at the end, he blocks a Stone's Throw attempt, elbowing clear, and, swivelling, hits <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOjID1N4x9E&feature=related" rel="external nofollow">something new</a> to pick up the pin.</p><p> </p><p>

Wolf Hawkins has just added to his arsenal, and Azaria dubs the move the Wolf's Call.</p><p>

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/book_open-2.jpg

Monday 1st August 2009

I've written before, I know, about how when you have 'big' PPVs like Malice and Total Mayhem, you have to be careful to make sure they feel 'big'.

The trick isn't doing that – the trick is doing it without shortchanging people who want to buy the others.

My theory for that, really, is to build enough matches that people want to buy it, and to make sure that they walk away with memories.

Let's take Summer Showdown. In fact, since this is meant to be about booking theory, and since Maggie's prepping one of her books in the next room and there are notes everywhere breaking down the plot of Sense & Sensibility, let's follow her lead. Let's take it piece by piece...

Kreed/Lions. The goal here was to complete the face turn for the Lions, and to advance the Deeley/Tyler/Jeremy issues in a show where Deeley was busy elsewhere. Also to kick off with an extremely dependable match. Since I knew the ringwork was going to be overshadowed by the angle, I didn't build to it during the month.

Edd/Canadian Elemental/Giant Tana. The one thing I didn't want to do with Edd's first feud was reproduce the previous one. So it made sense to have Edd try, while someone else stepped up to challenge him in the traditional style. Two flyers with an anchor who can help them both develop a wider understanding of the game, and this one can run a little longer.

Machines/Riders. This whole long-running feud was designed to do two things; first, to keep the Machines and Riders visible while keeping them out of the title picture to develop the newer teams into identifiable figures the fans can get behind, and second, to help elevate Sayeed (semi-successful at best) and Marc (pretty successful). We're in position now to do other things with both trios due to the blow off, and the core teams are also now in place to take on other tag feuds – just in time, too, as after Hotter Than Hell things will change.

Shingen/Dee. Miyazaki lacks much of an identity as champion, and Dee's ruthless nature needed to be emphasised ahead of a full push to come, likely, some time later in the year. The beatdown by Jack before the match keeps him visible and hopefully adds a little to Shingen's credibility while the Team KOBRA program continues a slow boil. Meanwhile, Frankie gets a PPV payday and a little more exposure.

GenOme/New Wave. Sooner or later any tag champions are going to have to face off with the New Wave. The goal here was to build some credibility for GenOme as a duo after not seeing them much for a while, keep the Wave hungry, and add a little more to their ongoing build.

Pete/Matt/Chris. The title needed changing ahead of Floyd Bowman's full integration into the roster, freeing Pete up. Along the way Chris Rockwell got the first real indicator of what he can do when he keeps his temper in check and Matthew Keith was allowed to look dangerous, building on his Mist storyline, and failed to win a title his father has held, which lays seeds for later.

Darkwave/Painful Procedure. This whole thing was forced on me. Next month, a match. Much happier with that. Accountants are pleased with the sales, though.

Gorgon/JeriLynn. We held off on JL's first shot last month to capitalise on an angle she and her father put together. This month laid the seeds; she worried Gorgon, causing the champ to take it out on her, and the armband angle is going to pick up further pieces through August. I'm only comfortable with the program, I will say, due to father and daughter asking to do it. Invoking dead relatives, particularly if you fall at the first match, is always uncomfortable territory.

Generation Omega/”Team TCW”. Two goals here; one was to showcase Generation Omega ahead of their return, the other was to emphasise that this feud has youth on either side. We can't just have the young guys be the heels; sooner or later, the older wrestlers will retire, and we need faces who're already beloved to replace them. This was also what I planned as the 'memory match'; RDJ with the big table spot, Floyd Bowman getting involved, a series of big moments, and the big moment off the corner. (Although all I told Remo and Aaron was I wanted the final fall to be something that it wouldn't damage Aaron's credibility to have fallen to – something no one would kick out from. They decided on the top-rope Destroyer themselves, and we had our memory for the fans to take from this.)

Wolf/Johnny. Wolf's title reign is going to be dominated by the desire for a match with Tommy, and that means that fitting other title programs in is a tricky business. What we've concentrated on doing, therefore, is building Wolf as a wrestler; he's winning mostly either clean or mostly-clean, he's stepping up to challenges like the Iron Man match Art made, and he's expanding his repertoire. In this case we gave him a new finish as a 'step out from Tommy's shadow'. I'm not entirely happy with the execution; I think we might need to lose the bridge, to give it more snap, more power. Beating Bloodstone narrowly gives Wolf more of a boost than beating a lot of people by a wide margin, in terms of his perception as an in-ring talent.

And that, more or less, is the PPV. While it's very much a 'filler' event, I think by and large the boys – and Alison and JeriLynn – delivered well enough that it won't be a regretted purchase and should pick up a decent DVD sale rate. We move on, down the road toward Malice...

Elimination Protocol (Kirk Jameson & Warren Technique) vs. The Kreed w/ Blonde Bombshell

This team are clearly destined for great things, and will therefore job their little hearts out to the highest and mightiest in the land.

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Pistol Pete Hall

Because Danny Jobberelli couldn't beat Blonde Bombshell, let alone a real wrestler.

Global Tradition w/ ???? vs. The Machines

Sorry, The Machines aren't going to lose here. That isn't how this works.

Cannonball Kid vs. Champagne Lover

A test of the Kid's solo talent - this should be interesting.

Marc DuBois w/ Phil Vibert vs. Merle O'Curle w/ Laura Huggins

Generation Omega come off their match ban looking strong.

Joey Minnesota w/ Phil Vibert vs. Troy Tornado

Because his heel turn gave him a new lease of life... just in time for a full-on match ban.

Eddie Peak & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Remo Richardson & Wolf Hawkins w/ Phil Vibert

One's the world champ, they're both Generation Omega, Sam Keith is winding down his career and can put over the younger guys... Yeah, I'm calling this for Generation Omega.

I liked that booking breakdown as well, I´m always interested to hear why others book the way they do.

Elimination Protocol (Kirk Jameson & Warren Technique) vs. the Kreed w/ Blonde Bombshell

Interesting pairing here but no way for them to go over Kreed on their first match.

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Pistol Pete Hall

Not sure about this one but I see little reason for Pete to win here

Global Tradition w/ ???? vs. the Machines

Tradition is basically a jobber team, a good jobber team but jobbers non-the-less

Cannonball Kid vs. Champagne Lover

Bigger name

Marc DuBois w/ Phil Vibert vs. Merle O'Curle w/ Laura Huggins

O´Curle is good but he´s mainly a tag guy and thus isn´t going to beat DuBois here.

Joey Minnesota w/ Phil Vibert vs. Troy Tornado

I expect Jack Bruce to play part on this one and that wouldn´t be good news for Tornado.

Eddie Peak & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Remo Richardson & Wolf Hawkins w/ Phil Vibert

Remo + Wolf seems slighly stronger team though this could easily go the other way as well

<p>Elimination Protocol (Kirk Jameson & Warren Technique) vs. <strong>the Kreed</strong> w/ Blonde Bombshell</p><p>

</p><p><em>

Good luck to Jameson and Technique... not winning the match, which seems unlikely at best, but performing well enough to earn a contract.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Danny Fonzarelli vs. <strong>Pistol Pete Hall</strong></p><p>

</p><p><em>

I'm assuming Hall gets at least a midcard push.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Global Tradition w/ ???? vs. <strong>the Machines</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Huggins breaks with the School of Tradition here. I'm calling it. Also, Machines win... time to get them back in contention.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Cannonball Kid vs. <strong>Champagne Lover</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Throw in Kazuma if you want... CL Smooth is still the guy with the push here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Marc DuBois</strong> w/ Phil Vibert vs. Merle O'Curle w/ Laura Huggins</p><p> </p><p>

<em>We've been told DuBois is wily, but we haven't seen it much... he's been kind of the forgotten man of the stable. This is about giving DuBois a win against credible (if mostly tag-oriented) competition, while probably fleshing out his "master of mind games" persona. </em></p><p><em>

</em></p><p>

Joey Minnesota w/ Phil Vibert vs. <strong>Troy Tornado</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>I want to give a win to the faces somewhere in the upper card, and coming out of the stable feud, Tornado needs to remind folks he can still play in the main event.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Eddie Peak & Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. <strong>Remo Richardson & Wolf Hawkins</strong> w/ Phil Vibert</p><p> </p><p>

<em>These might be the top two heels in the company right now. Maybe Jeremy over Remo, but after Remo flattened Andrews in the PPV, I can't help thinking that's his bid for "upper main eventer" status. Conversely, I see Cornell, McFly and Bloodstone as all slightly ahead of these two faces... in general theory, if not in current overness. And Peak-Keith isn't even a natural team-up. </em></p>

Elimination Protocol vs. The Kreed w/ Blonde Bombshell

There's a certain amount of interest from some of the New England crowd at the announcement of the name Elimination Protocol, but it's not the kind of interest that comes from recognition – they're just curious to see what these guys are actually capable of.

And the Protocol are not to be dismissed easily, it seems – they show some real fire early on, with Jameson hitting some nasty impact shots to go with Technique's remarkable display – actually winning some hold exchanges against the Kreed – but it's just not enough; individually, the Kreed are both probably a little better, and as a team, the Kreed know exactly how to get the most out of one another.

Warren Technique is forced, before too long, to tap out to Art Reed's Dread Lock.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/AaronAndrews-1.jpg

The big screen comes to life next; Aaron Andrews is shown in a gym, working out, concentrating on weight lifting at the moment.

“The Game Breaker has got to hit hard,” he explains. “If I can't toss around dead weight heavier than my opponent, well... I've got to try harder.” The image dissolves into a clip of Andrews' PPV match, roughly twelve months previous, against Eric Tyler – the long-fought-for victory he achieved.

“It's been a hell of a year,” he continues. “Eric Tyler marked me out for disrespect. By the time I was clear of those problems, I'd got myself in trouble...” The clip shifts, showing Andrews attempting to put Cornell away with the spinebuster. “I was square in the sights of the leader of the Syndicate.

“What got me through that was a mentor. A man who'd become a friend. A man I wanted to trust.”

The clipshow continues, cutting through appropriate visuals as he continues to talk.

“Joey Minnesota helped train me. He kept me focused. He stood by my side and he supported me – he even persuaded Nemesis to give me the Game Breaker.

“When Sam Keith recruited to deal with the Syndicate, we stepped up together. In that war cage, we fought together. We helped bring down Marat Khoklov.

“And when I pinned Tommy Cornell to end the match, no one was prouder.”

The music in the background takes a sombre tone. “But then... I put my career in the hands of the fans.” We see the selection at Fight To The Feedback, the return to combat with Eric Tyler, the victory to come full circle.

“And that didn't give the chance to take the tag teams titles. But I wanted to.

“As soon as I lost the belt, I knew Joey and me would go for tag team gold. I knew we'd take it.

“I like to think that, in another life... we will. That somewhere where he had patience, the Rising Stars win a championship together. That the name goes down in legend, with those other famous team. You know the ones I mean.

“Texas Outlaws. Lords of War. New Zealand Game Hunters. Blazing Flames. Calgary Wolverines.”

“We had the talent to do that, Joey. But... you couldn't wait. And you chose to destroy that friendship.

“It might have been next month. We might already have the belts.

“I helped fight the Syndicate, and you stood by me, but make no mistake, Joey – you being with them is not going to stop me fighting Generation Omega.

“And it's going to happen soon. At Hotter Than Hell, I'm going to start with you.”

Danny Fonzarelli vs. Pistol Pete Hall

It's not a bad little brawl, this, and Fonzarelli is showing definite spark again, but the veteran has him scouted well, and a power advantage to boot. At the ten minute mark, the Pistol Whip Lariat finishes a reasonably enjoyable match.

Global Tradition vs. the Machines

The crowd's reaction picks up a little more strongly here. The Machines have a target in sight; Global Tradition look determined, and if anything, the veteran duo has just gotten better over the years – but the Machines still have the edge.

While JD Morgan brawls desperately on the outside with Brent Hill, John Anderson hits the Ammo Dump on Joel Bryant with no small satisfaction.

Breakin The Law hits next, and out comes Tommy Cornell, microphone in hand. He heads down to the ring with that same confident swagger he's had for years, now, but he has to take a little longer before he can speak

“Thanks,” he says, as it dies down. “OK, brass tacks time. So Wolf-”

Music begins to play; an unfortunately familiar track. Only God Can Judge Me.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/Remo.jpg

The big screen has come to life, chronicling Remo's workout regimen and some of his tactical training. The tank top he's working in bears the Generation Omega logo.

“Eddie Peak. Ricky Dale Johnson. Rick Law. Aaron Andrews. Sean Deeley. Art Reed. Chris Rockwell. Sam Keith.

“You know what they've all got in common?

“All former champions somewhere in the world. All legends of wrestling or getting that way.

“All been smashed by Remo in the last eight months.

“Eight months. Nine champions.

“I'm aiming to make it a round ten.

“Puttin' you all on notice. I've got my sights on one of you – one of the biggest names here. And if I get my way, the man I smash is gonna be him.

“But if you want to get in my way, that's fine. I was gonna get to you sooner or later if you're worth going through.

“You might want to live a little longer. Your choice.

“It don't matter to Remo.”

As the camera returns to the ring, Cornell has had to leave; Ray Johnson is in position, setting up shop for the next match.

The Cannonball Kid vs. Champagne Lover

As Lover heads down to the ring he sports a plain black armband on his left arm. Azaria recaps for the fans who missed Summer Showdown the story of Simone Aube-Stone's death, being recognised evidently by the Stones and their allies.

“No letters on this one,” Doakes remarks. “Maybe the letters were for family only?”

“Wearing it at all is a mark of respect,” Dangerous says. “I didn't expect that from Lover, but I have to give him credit for it.”

Once the match begins, Lover remains deadly serious. The Cannonball Kid, though he seems subdued at first, eyes on the armband, rapidly regains his composure in the ring.

Both these men are athletic, flexible, and true proponents of the lucha libre philosophy in wrestling. The contest picks up pace rapidly, and as the battle continues, the Kid actually begins to gain a degree of advantage. Comparisons to Edd Stone notch up from his showboating, comedic style, and it does seem to fluster Lover more than somewhat.

He actually gets into a position where he might win, near the end, and bundles Lover over, setting for a flip piledriver – but Lover shoves him away and catches him, rebounding from the ropes, with the Lover Stunner. The pinfall is academic.

Marc DuBois w/ Phil Vibert vs. Merle O'Curle w/ Laura Huggins

The British Lion looks somewhat strange, really, without Walter Morgan by his side. While he's certainly put in regular singles competition over his months with TCW, he's hardly an iconic solo figure.

The back-and-forth of hold and counter-hold is excellent, and DuBois certainly shows the skills that had him labelled as a “Can't-Miss Prospect” back in 2006 – wrestling skills quite apart from his talent as a master of mind games.

And the mind games are there – subtle enough that it takes Dangerous, the only man on the announce team who's been in the wrestling ring, to spot it, and even then it takes a few minutes.

But it's a smart play, nonetheless; DuBois keeps O'Curle cornered, cutting his free movement down to one small sector of the ring – the sector opposite where he's habitually waited for a tag, or retreated to for a tag when need be.

All of Merle O'Curle's reflexes and instincts want the path to the far corner to be clear; every strategy he's used to putting in play is predicated on access to it. And it's actually possible, once Dangerous has pointed it out, to see Merle getting anxious, without even knowing why.

That's his downfall – edgy, he takes risks, and DuBois is certainly good enough to capitalise on that; he nails the Marc of Excellence and secures a pinfall.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/TommyCornell_alt1jt.jpg

Once again Breakin' the Law begins to play. Cornell makes his way down to the ring once again, microphone in hand. This time he's talking as he appears.

“Right about now Phil Vibert's probably staring at one of the monitors in the back and getting good and pissed off, and I honestly don't give a toss.

“He's pissed off because this is time Generation Omega booked to do their talking about whatever they wanna talk about – probably just bragging themselves up, because they did have a pretty good night this Sunday for a bunch of wankers.

“I shouldn't be out here talkin' to you interrupting the time Vibert paid good money for, should I?” He grins at the crowd reaction.

“Mind you, I booked time earlier and Generation Omega decided to run a press video all over me, so...” he shrugs. “Like I say, couldn't give a toss right now.” His grin is tight, but it's a performer's grin; a stand-up comic letting the idea out there.

“Oh, and Phil, if you come out here, or if one of your buddies does, then that match Remo saved you from Sunday? I'm booking it. I might even put us in a steel cage.” The grin is wider now, very genuine, as the crowd salivate at the idea.

“Right – the real business. Wolf, boy, you did it. I don't know how, but you did it. You beat Johnny Bloodstone and you snuck through with your championship.

“Fair's fair. You managed. And it's clear that I need the very best in the world to take that belt off you and kick your arse, sunshine.

“Because I'm still not giving you the satisfaction of getting in the ring with you, sunshine. You want it way too bad for me to be willing to give you what you're after.

“So here's what's coming; I found someone who knows you as well as I do. Someone who deserves a World Heavyweight Championship. Someone who trained you.

“If you honestly think you can consider Sam Keith a pushover, sunbeam, then you've let Vibert crawl up your ass so far he's cut off the blood flow to your brain. He knows you. And he'll beat you.”

Joey Minnesota w/ Phil Vibert vs. Troy Tornado

It's not the kind of match that Champagne Lover and the Cannonball Kid had, but it does maintain the same kind of pace – holds and flying manoeuvres dialled down, though, while strikes and impact moves come to prominence.

Hard to say which man hits harder. Hard, too, to say who had an easier time of shrugging off the impacts; two tough competitors, both hungry for victory, both skilled and willing to do what they can...

You'd have to call this contest an equal one, with Minnesota looking every bit as dangerous as the recent World Heavyweight Champion. Nonetheless, as the match nears a close, Tornado has a brief advantage, stunning Joey with a facebreaker across his knee before soaring from the ropes in a Star Maker – but Minnesota dodges clear!

Joey takes a moment to grin down at Vibert, smirking slightly at how well he ducked the flying lariat, but when he turns around Tornado has recovered, lining up a discus punch that immediately sends Joey to the mat.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JackBruce_alt8.jpg

Troy hauls Joey to his feet with one hand, calling for the Tornado Driver with the other, but then he catches sight of Jack Bruce on the apron with a steel chair.

He hesitates – and Minnesota powers through to nail the Empire Spiral, covering fast for the pin. After the three count, Bruce drives the chair into Tornado's prone head, bloodying him from the impact.

Rick Law is walking backstage. He stops outside one locker room door, shoving it open. A couple of moments later, the camera moves to see over his shoulder; Jack Marlowe is there, staring back at Law.

“Problem?” Marlowe sneers.

“Yeah,” Law says simply. “This business of yours... interfering in all those matches.

“You should consider yourself on notice as of now.”

Marlowe shrugs. “Get someone who earned their damn uniform to talk to me and I'll give a ****,” he replies. “You done?”

“For now,” Law returns. “You've been warned, that's all. Keep it up, and I will get involved.”

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/TommyCornell_alt1jt.jpg

He moves on down the corridor, and the camera follows him. Tommy Cornell is stood talking to a business-suited man in a small office off the corridor; Law stops at the door again, but this time he simply raps his knuckles politely against the frame.

“Excuse me,” Cornell tells the official. “Rick,” he smiles. “What can I do you for?”

“I know Mayhem's out for a while,” Law says. “You've got your hands full with matchmaking at the moment. But I was thinking...

“There's no question in my mind that Sam Keith deserves his title shot. And he could well beat Wolf Hawkins.”

Cornell nods.

“But just in case...” Law hesitates. “I mean, I thought Bloodstone would do it.

“You want Generation Omega's power broken. And it's probably a good thing anyway. So...”

Tommy raises an eyebrow. “You want a shot? TCW bylaws say I can't make Wolf wrestle more than once a night, Rick.”

Law nods. “I'd hate to win that way,” he says. “Just because he'd never let me forget it. No, I just... I think you're making these picks the wrong way.”

“What d'you mean?”

“You're asking yourself who can beat Wolf Hawkins.”

“That's what I want them to do.”

Law shakes his head. “No. You want them to beat the Champion. And that's different.

“Don't ask yourself who can counter the Full Moon Rising, or the Wolf's Call. Don't ask yourself who can wear Hawkins out.

“Ask yourself who will fight... who will keep fighting... until the championship is in their hands. Who will never stop until they have that chance.

“Better yet, don't ask yourself. I've been here for years now. Something's been missing... You brought in the Shot at the Top three years ago, and one of TCW's matches hasn't been seen since. It used to be the big Malice match, but it just vanished.”

Cornell starts to grin. “Malice in Chains.”

“Six men, locked in, until you know for sure who won't stop until the belt is in their hands,” Law says, nodding. “I just think it's worth a shot.”

“And you want in.”

“Malice in Chains always used to have qualifiers...” Law smiles. “Just give me a chance to get in that match, and I'll do the rest.”

Cornell nods, smiling. “You're on to a winner there, Rick.”

Remo Richardson & Wolf Hawkins w/ Phil Vibert

Remo seems entirely dismissive of Peak, having bested him in their series leading up to now. Keith and Hawkins, by contrast, have their eyes locked on one another the entire time; Hawkins is staring, his eyes burning with a cold fury – as Doakes puts it, “all Wolf is seeing right now is another obstacle in front of the match he wants.”

Sam, on the other hand, holds Wolf's gaze long enough to let the champion know he isn't afraid, then – right before the bell rings – he smirks.

Hawkins immediately demands to be tagged into the ring; Remo ignores him, and he and Eddie go at it in a stunning exhibition.

Soon enough, though, Keith comes in. Once again, Wolf demands the tag – and Remo lets it happen.

And the duo tear into each other. It's frantic, furious, and within minutes, Keith is bleeding, busted open by a series of punches from the champion.

Wolf finds himself dragged down into a pinning predicament immediately after that, however, and only barely kicks out.

That sets the tone for the remainder of the match, with alternating bouts of excellent wrestling and furious brawling.

What's astonishing is that Generation Omega's two biggest names, even in concert, don't seem able to put the 49-year-old Sam Keith away. Peak saves him twice, but mostly, he finds some way to have a foot or a hand on the ropes, or just squeeze a shoulder up or, once, roll out to the ring.

“Of course,” Azaria remarks, “he's able to tag out to Eddie. He's able to recover. But one on one... I don't know. The living legend might just shock us all at Hotter Than Hell.”

The final result doesn't confirm one way or the other; after twenty minutes, with scant seconds left to the broadcast, Eugene Williams calls the time limit draw.
