WCW 1996: An Even Better Year

Recommended Posts

Kevin Sullivan vs. Randy Savage As much as I like Kevin Sullivan there is noway he is beating Randy Savage.

Scott Norton vs. The Gambler Wow this match is probably going to suck!:D

Cobra vs. Disco Inferno I consider myself to be a WCW fan but for the life of me I can not remember who Cobra was.

WCW World Television Title Match: Johnny B. Badd defends vs. Dean Malenko This is a tough one because I am pretty sure that Johnny will win but I am going to go with Dean anyway.

American Males vs. Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit I hated the American Males back then and I still hate them now. And plus AA is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time.

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Brian Pillman

I have to go with Ric.

Cobra is Jeff Farmer aka the nWo Sting. He was brought in originally to feud with Sgt. Craig Pittman if memory serves. And once that feud ended, there was nothing for him to do perse until he became the nWo's version of Sting.

Kevin Sullivan vs. Randy Savage Randy Savage deserves better than being fed Sullivan.

Scott Norton vs. The Gambler I was always impressed by Norton, and think Gambler is a jobber.

Cobra vs. Disco Inferno Disco Inferno is a great character who could do with a decent tag team partner.

WCW World Television Title Match: Johnny B. Badd defends vs. Dean Malenko Perhaps a personal preference, but Malenko is better.

American Males vs. Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit Wishful thinking, I'd like to see Benoit go off on his own.

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Brian Pillman Flair will hold the title for a while yet.

Savage all the way... Sullivan better served as a manager at this point

Scott Norton vs. The Gambler

I'm going to be willing to gamble, that the gambler has no shot here

Cobra vs. Disco Inferno

Disco has much more ptential than the cobra

WCW World Television Title Match: Johnny B. Badd defends vs. Dean Malenko

I'd love to see Malenko win here, but I think he is here to make Johnny B Badd look better

American Males vs. Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit

Horsemen

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Brian Pillman

But, not by Pinfall, Pillman pulls off huge upset and Flair is Irate... but he keeps his title

[The cameras go outside the Pyramid Arena here in Memphis to show the limo arrival of the III Horsemen. Flair is wearing the WCW World Heavyweight Title Belt and he lets out a 'Whoooooo' doing a little strut before high fiving Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit and they head inside the arena.]

[Eric Bischoff and Bobby Heenan had welcomed everyone to Monday Nitro and things kicked off early with 'American Made' being played and the Immortal Hulk Hogan walking down to the ring! He played to the crowd and then was given a microphone.]

Hulk Hogan

"Fe fi fo fum, brother! I smell a dirty stinking Giant in the backstage area. Giant, you want a match with me at the Clash? All you had to do was ask, brother. You didn't have to come at me from behind. That's exactly the thing that you won't be doing at the Clash because you'll have to meet me face-to-face, dude! And when you meet Hulk Hogan and all of these Hulkamaniacs face-to-face we're gonna be able to look you right in the eyes, brother, because I will be standing on the shoulders of each and every Hulkamaniac out there. You'll have to look up to me, dude! And at the Clash of the Champions you're going to have to ask yourself one question: Whatcha gonna do, brother? Whatcha gonna do when the power of each and every Hulkamaniac and the power of Hulk Hogan runs wild over you?!?!"

[American Made plays and Hulk rips his shirt to cheers from the crowd and poses for a minute before he heads to the back.]

Match #1

Kevin Sullivan vs. Randy Savage

[These two veterans did not click in the ring together but it didn't prevent them from putting on a decent bout. The crowd got into it and Jimmy Hart at ringside tried to interfere several times but the Macho Man put the brakes on to that by hitting Jimmy with his own megaphone! Savage got back in the ring and body slammed Sullivan before coming off the top turnbuckles with the Flying Elbow Drop and made the cover, getting the three count!]

Winner: Randy Savage

Match Rating: B

[Following the win, Savage asked for and received a microphone.]

Randy Savage

"Ohhhhh yeah! Ric Flair, take a good long look at me because even though you had your Horsemen do your dirty work, I'm still here, yeah. I think you're just a little bit afraid of me taking your title. And you know that it's gonna happen, dig it?!?! You had to have your little friends help you out at Starrcade but at Clash of the Champions it will be the Macho Man walking away with the belt. Dig IT?!?!"

[savage's music plays and he heads to the back.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ScottNorton.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/TheGambler.jpg

Scott Norton vs. The Gambler

[This match wasn't anything great as the crowd didn't seem to care about either athlete. The Gambler's gamble did not pay off as he was caught within a Power Bomb by Scott 'Flash' Norton and pinned: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Scott Norton

Match Rating: D-

[The crowd rose on their feet and booed as 'Thus Spake Zarathustra' began to play announcing the arrival of WCW World Heavyweight Champion 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair! He is flanked as always by 'The Enforcer' Arn Anderson and 'The Canadian Crippler' Chris Benoit: The Horsemen. They each stepped inside the ring and Flair was given a microphone.]

Ric Flair

"First of all, you people here in Memphis need to shut your mouth and pay some respect to the greatest collection of wrestlers ever assembled on the face of the earth. Whooooo! And we still need to add one more to the bunch. We are going to be holding tryouts all over the world to determine just who will be the next Horsemen and take Brian Pillman's place. Speaking of Pillman, tonight you made the biggest mistake in your young life because you agreed to step inside the ring with the Nature Boy. You were never good enough to be a Horseman and tonight I am going to show you why. Whoooooo."

[Chris walks over and pats Ric on the shoulder, asking for the microphone.]

Chris Benoit

"Ric, I only ask you one thing: save a little of him for me for the Clash of the Champions. Pillman, at the Clash, you will be crippled."

[Ric smiles and releases a 'Whooooooo' as the music plays and they head to the back.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/Sting.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/LexLuger.jpg

[backstage, Sting and Lex Luger are shown having an argument about the way things went down on WCW Saturday Night. Sting says that he doesn't want to win that way while Luger just contends that he was trying to help. The two look at each other for a long moment before Sting exits the locker room, shaking his head.]

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/JeffFarmerCobra.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/DiscoInferno.jpg

Cobra vs. Disco Inferno

[Another match that had little of the crowd's interest or attention. Disco's dancing got a little bit of crowd boos but Cobra came back until fans looked up and The Giant headed down toward the ring! The Giant climbed inside and put a big boot to Cobra and then a stomp down to Disco Inferno, causing the no contest!]

Winner: No Contest

Match Rating: D

[The Giant showed his dominance by Choke Slamming both Disco and Cobra at the same time, letting loose a roar! And this is the same man who will be taking on Hulk Hogan at the Clash!]

[sister Sherri gives a screeching interview talking about Harlem Heat and how precious the WCW World Tag Team Titles are to them and to her. And they aren't gonna let some old has-beens take the belts away at the Clash...sucka!]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/MarcMero.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/KimberlyPage.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/DeanMalenko.jpg

WCW World Television Title Match

Johnny B. Badd defends vs. Dean Malenko

[A little below average match between these two for the WCW World Television Title. JBB showed the quickness against Malenko but the Iceman took things to the crowd and wrapped Johnny B. Badd in several holds that nearly got a submission out of him. Malenko looked good out there in his technical wrestling savvy but toward the end, Johnny B. Badd started taking the advantage and went up to the top turnbuckle and leaped -- DIAMOND CUTTER! Diamond Dallas Page caught Johnny B. Badd flyng off the top turnbuckle with the Diamond Cutter out of nowhere! The referee was right there though and called for the bell.]

Winner: Johnny B. Badd

Match Rating: C-

[DDP smiled over at Kimberly, who shook her head and checked on Johnny. Diamond Dallas Page gave the diamond sign and the 'BANG!' before rolling out of the ring and motioning to his waist that he wants the belt!]

Match #5

American Males vs. Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit

[Not a good match because the American Males could not compete up to the level of an Anderson and Benoit. Benoit looked the best out of the group there but it was Anderson who came up with a Spinebuster and then a DDT on Marcus Bagwell to get the pinfall.]

Winners: The Horsemen

Match Rating: D+

[A video is shown to promote The Giant, showing his attacks on Hogan and his beating Hulk Hogan at halloween Havoc 1995. Will the same thing happen at the Clash???]

Match #6

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RicFlairWorldChamp.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/BrianPillman.jpg

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match

Ric Flair defends vs. Brian Pillman

[The fans were definitely in for a long and great match between these two as their entrances started at about 25 minutes till the hour and this is our main event of the evening! The Nature Boy came down to the ring flanked by the rest of the Horsemen while Brian Pillman came down with the cane and put it at ringside. He got right up in Flair's face before the bell, yelling at him and slapping his face!

The bell rang and the Nature Boy remained cool, calm and collected and started the match off slow, pushing Pillman in the corner and lacing his chest with a couple of those hard knife-edge chops but Pillman turned things around and began chopping the chest of Flair! Flair quickly ducked under the top rope to break the momentum and have referee Nick Patrick back off Pillman. Pillman would score two near falls within the first few minutes of action, using his high flying ability to eventually send Flair to the outside. Flair consulted with the Horsemen but Pillman had seen enough and launched himself over the top rope, crashing down on all 3 of the Horsemen members! Pillman got up and flashed the 4 fingers and then turned it upside down! He tossed Flair back into the ring and went up top: flying cross body...

1...

2...

KICKOUT!

So close to crowning a new WCW World Heavyweight Champion! Pillman bounced off the ropes and dove under the legs of Flair, coming up behind him with a big clothesline and the taunting the other Horsemen at ringside. Arn had to hold Benoit back. But this taunting gave Flair a rest break and when Pillman came back over, Flair caught him with a thumb to the eyes! Then a kick to the leg by the Nature Boy! Flair hooked Pillman and lifted him, dropping knee across knee! The Nature Boy started to take control here within the midway portion of the match, working over the knee of Brian Pillman. He tossed Pillman outside the ring and then distracted the referee while Chris Benoit and Arn Anderson put the boots to Pillman! Arn kicked Pillman right in the leg and then lifted him up and tossed him back in the ring before the referee turned around and, of course, Arn and benoit plead innocence though the crowd was trying to tell the referee otherwise! Flair hooked Pillman's leg on the bottom rope and then elevated himself, coming crash down on the leg of Brian Pillman! Pillman cried out in pain and Flair pulled the Flying man to the center of the ring. Flair called out that it's over and began hooking the legs for the Figure 4 Leglock but Pillman reverses it into a small package:

1...

2...

KICKOUT!

Sooo close once again! The crowd cheered and stomped their feet for Pillman as Flair came back over and Pillman threw a shot to the gut! Another one! A third one and Pillman got on his feet, limping on that badly hurt leg. Pillman whipped Flair into the corner and followed him in on one leg, lifting up -- MONKEY FLIP! Pillman grabs his leg in agony over in the corner as Flair was flipped halfway across the ring! Brian Pillman slowly grabs the ropes to pull himself up as Flair comes over - elbow shot by Pillman! Another elbow! A third has Flair staggering away and Pillman lifts himself to the top turnbuckle! Flair turns - DUCKS THE CROSS BODY ATTEMPT! Pillman hits the mat hard and Flair gets back up, going right over to Pillman. Whoooo comes from Flair and he hooks on the Figure 4 Leglock! It connects and Pillman cries out in pain, shaking his head as he does not want to submit! Flair lifts himself up, putting more pressure on the legs! Pillman gets some support from the crowd but after about a minute and a half in the hold Pillman has no choice but to give up!]

Winner: Ric Flair

Match Rating: B+

[Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit enter the ring and immediately begin stomping on Brian Pillman! The crowd boos as Benoit heads to the top turnbuckle...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RandySavage1.jpg

[Then a cheer slides through as the Macho Man comes running down the aisle with a steel folding chair in hand! Arn helps Flair break the Figure 4 Leglock and then takes a chair shot from Randy Savage! Flair rolls out of the ring as Chris Benoit drops from the top turnbuckle, showing no fear against the Macho Man! Benoit ducks a wild chair shot and then grabs Savage -- CRIPPLER CROSSFACE! He hooks his brand new finisher onto the Macho Man and Flair rolls back in the ring with a smile, kicking and stomping on Savage and the Horsemen once again end the show victorious.]

Wednesday, Week 2, January 1996

Contrary to popular belief by some people, I don't enjoy firing my wrestlers. I really don't. But I had to release two wrestlers over the last couple of days. Manabu Nakanishi, known in WCW as Kurasawa, and Martin Ruane, known in WCW as Loch Ness, are both gone from their contracts here. I can probably expect to make more cuts as the days move forward. Sometimes you just have to know when to cut a man loose, right?

On the other hand, there were a few signings that I see will have some long-term investments. Two men were hired to work as Road Agents backstage. They both have the respect of the wrestlers because they've been around for awhile: James J. Dillon and Ricky Steamboat. There's been a few other signings that I won't reveal here because I am convinced that some of these dirt-sheet guys are finding access to my journals. But needless to say these guys will make an impact in the coming weeks here on Nitro and WCW Saturday Night.

Brian Pillman just faxed over his copy of a contract extension. This kept Vince McMahon from getting him, which is always a good thing. Pillman is a great entertainer and wrestler to boot so there will always be a place here in WCW for a man like him.

The Clash of the Champions is in less than a week and we've got some great matches lined up for it. We have decided to move the Clash from TBS to pay-per-view because TBS did not renew the contract for it. Oh and Nitro beat out Raw in the ratings war this past Monday: 4.64 to 2.92. We're looking even better here! Vince is just spinning his wheels right now. Word is that he signed Bull Nakano. Could he be looking to start up a Women's Division?

The Blue Bloods vs. Jim Duggan and The Nasty Boys

The Blue Bloods were all sorts of awsome.

I am going with a draw on this one. Because of Hogan's creative control, he will not agree to lose this match but I really can not see Big Show and Flair not winning either.

[The show begins with a recap of what happened last Monday night when Ric Flair met Brian Pillman for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. With interference from the Horsemen, Flair managed to lock the Figure 4 on Pillman and get the submission from him. The Horsemen attacked but in came the Macho Man to make the save! But even the Macho Man fell victim to the gang warfare of the Horsemen.]

Sting vs. Meng

[An impressive singles bout for the man with the Tongan Death Grip but an average match for the holder of the Scorpion Death Lock. Meng got in some good shots early on but the crowd propelled Sting back into the match and he sent Meng into the corner -- STINGER SPLASH! Meng fell to the mat and then Sting grabbed his legs -- SCORPION DEATH LOCK! Sting hooked his finisher on Meng and all Meng could do is give up.]

Winner: Sting

[Following the match, Sting asked for a microphone.]

Sting

"One Man Gang! I know you're watching! This Tuesday night at the Clash of the Champions, it's gonna be you and me, pal. There will be no interference, no cheating, just the Stinger taking your title! OWWWWWWW! One Man Gang, get ready, because this Tuesday night is gonna be SHOWTIME!"

[sting beats his chest to the crowd's approval as his music plays and he heads to the back.]

"Hey Johnny, have I gotten your attention now? Are you going to be a little bit focused on me? That's right, it's me, it's me, it's D D P! I know I have the attention of my former Diamond Doll Kimberly. Kimberly, why don't you ditch that loser and hitch your ride back onto a winner, sweetheart? at the Clash, Johnny is gonna leave without a title, without a woman, without a reason to live and it's all gonna be because of three little words: diamond cutter..."

[DDP turns to walk off and then flashes the diamond symbol at the camera.]

The Giant

"Just let me do all the work in there, Flair. I'll destroy Hogan just like I'm going to destroy him at the Clash of the Champions! ROAR!"

Ric Flair

"Giant, tonight is a one time deal. The Horsemen certainly don't need any help from the Dungeon of Doom and we certainly don't need your assistance either. You let me in there and I'll put Savage out for good."

The Blue Bloods vs. Jim Duggan and The Nasty Boys

[Not a very good six man tag team encounter. The crowd's most liveliest thing they did was to do the 'USA' chant for Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Jerry Saggs played the face in peril, constantly getting double and even triple teamed by the Blue Bloods. He made a hot tag to Hacksaw Jim Duggan, though, who cleaned house of the Blue Bloods! The crowd got behind Duggan as all six man came in for the usual brawl with the Nasty Boys brawling outside the ring with Squire David Taylor and Earl Robert Eaton. Inside the ring, Lord Steven Regal used Duggan's 2X4 on him behind the referee's back and then hooked on the Regal Stretch! This gave him a submission victory.]

Winners: The Blue Bloods

Match Rating: D+

[Following the sounding of the bell, Regal did NOT release the hold! Duggan cried out in pain but Regal kept on the Regal Stretch despite the referee's protests! These two will be meeting at the Clash if Duggan can make it there. Regal finally released the hold and rose up, bowing to the crowd and then ducking out when the Nasty Boys came in the ring and The Blue Bloods left with the victory.]

Match #4

Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair and The Giant

[Our main event for this evening is tag team action! Flair and Hogan started out the match for just a couple of minutes before Hogan brought Flair over into his corner and tagged out to the Macho Man. Macho got in a couple of shots before Flair quickly moved over and tagged out to The Giant, who stepped in over the top rope! Savage went right after The Giant but Giant managed to shove him off and go to work on him. The Giant showed his strength against Savage and Savage helped to make him look like a champ. Giant press slammed the Macho Man and made a cover:

1...

2...

KICKOUT!

Giant lifted Savage and sent him hard into a corner and then chased him in - SAVAGE MOVED! The Giant hit the corner chest-first and the Macho Man hit him with a clothesline to the back! He began ramming The Giant's head into the turnbuckles and took control for several minutes before tagging out to Hogan! Hogan got the crowd psyched but it only lasted a couple of minutes because The Giant put a thumb to his eyes and began working his way over to Flair, who took a powder! Flair dropped off the apron, yelling at The Giant that he said he could handle it! Flair pushed Jimmy Hart and grabbed the WCW World Heavyweight Title belt and began to walk up the ramp!

Savage dropped down from the apron and began chasing Flair! Flair took off a lot faster then up the ramp and disappeared behind the curtain. Savage turned back toward the ring where Hogan had regained the advantage. Hogan hit the Giant with a big boot and then a legdrop, making the cover:

1...

2...

3!!]

Winners: Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage

Match Rating: B-

[The Macho Man returned to the ring and began celebrating with Hogan. Both men posed, sending the crowd home happy as the show came to a close.]

WCW.com...

It's the last show before the Clash of the Champions and everyone will be seeking momentum going into that big pay-per-view event!

What a main event we have for you, folks! This match will determine just which matchup will be for the WCW World Heavyweight Title at the Clash of the Champions and was made because of Ric Flair's actions on WCW Saturday Night! Our main event here on Nitro will be Ric Flair defending the WCW World Heavyweight Title against...The Giant! Who will be defending the belt at the Clash? Find out tonight on Nitro!

Randy Savage will be preparing for his big match with Ric Flair at the Clash as he takes on one of the Horsemen: The Canadian Crippler Chris Benoit. Can Benoit cash in on a major win here in WCW or will Savage have some momentum heading into the Clash?

In order to make up for what happened a couple of weeks ago on WCW Saturday Night, Lex Luger has asked for a non title match with the One Man Gang and has been granted that match here on Nitro! Will the Total Package beat the U.S. Champ or will the One Man Gang get his revenge?

Plus a returning mystery team steps inside the ring here on Nitro to take on Col. Robert Parker's Bunkhouse Buck and Dirty Dick Slater! The only way to find out who this mystery team is is to watch!

Plus more action!

Non Title: Lex Luger vs. One Man Gang

Mystery Team vs. Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck

Guess on who Mystery Team Is:

Alex Wright vs. Disco Inferno

Scott Norton vs. Diamond Dallas Page

Chris Benoit vs. Randy Savage

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. The Giant

Non Title: Lex Luger vs. One Man Gang

Okay seeing how it is a non title match I have to go with Lex.

Mystery Team vs. Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck

Well seeing that Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck were noting more then jobbers at this point I will go with the Mystery Team

Guess on who Mystery Team Is: Well that's a mystery...I will go with Lexa90's pick and say the Road Warriors. But it would be cool if it were the Samoan Swat Team

Alex Wright vs. Disco Inferno

I was always a fan of Disco Inferno and not a fan of Alex Wright so that is the reason for this pick.

Scott Norton vs. Diamond Dallas Page

I like both guys but I think that DDP is more over at this time.

Chris Benoit vs. Randy Savage

((I am getting ready to leave tomorrow to go to the Carolina Panthers' training camp and will be gone for several days so I wanted to go ahead and post the card for the Clash of the Champions so everyone could go ahead and get their predictions in for this card as well.))

WCW.com...

It's the biggest card in the month of January. It's live and only on pay-per-view. It's the Clash of the Champions and what a lineup we have for you.

Will our main event be 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair defending the WCW World Heavyweight Title against 'Macho Man' Randy Savage? Or will The Giant be defending the belt against 'The Immortal' Hulk Hogan? That question will be answered on Monday Nitro but both matches will take place here tonight at the Clash!

Also the United States title will be on the line as The Dungeon of Doom's One Man Gang defends the title against the man they call Sting! What factor will Lex Luger have in this match, if any?

Brian Pillman will also be getting an opportunity against a member of the group that kicked him out: the Four Horsemen as he takes on The Canadian Crippler Chris Benoit! Will the Horsemen reign supreme in this match or will Pillman get a measure of revenge?

Plus more action!

Chris Benoit vs. Brian Pillman

WCW World Tag Team Titles Match: Harlem Heat defend vs. The Road Warriors

Lord Steven Regal vs. Jim Duggan

WCW World Television Title Match: Johnny B. Badd defends vs. Diamond Dallas Page

WCW United States Title Match: One Man Gang defends vs. Sting

(WCW World Heavyweight Title Match?) The Giant vs. Hulk Hogan

(WCW World Heavyweight Title Match?) Ric Flair defends vs. Randy Savage
