WCW 1996: An Even Better Year

Recommended Posts

Thanks again to everyone who's predicted so far! The predictions and comments really do help make this diary fun and worthwhile!

Well you made the diary fun for me when you had the Horsemen jump Lanny Poffo. The minute I saw that picture of him I started to laugh.

And I would have never guessed that it was DEAN MALENKO that was going to end up Rick Rude's protege! That was great stuff as you have a great talker as the manager to a great wrestler who can not talk.

I'll tell you, I had a tough time trying to decide who to make as Rude's protege. For the longest time, the part was going to go to Eddy Guerrero but IIRC, he's on a PPA contract with us because of his New Japan work so I preferred to have someone who is on written with us.

The last show of the month should be a good one as several of WCW's top stars and tag teams step into the ring on WCW Saturday Night!

The opening bout will feature the man they call Sting, the newest member of the Four Horsemen, going one on one with Scott 'Flash' Norton in a defense of the United States Heavyweight Title! Can Norton walk away with the gold?

Two big tag team bouts also highlight WCW Saturday Night as the veteran team of the State Patrol take on the brothers known as the Steiners and a heavy hitting battle will ensue as the Road Warriors face off with the Faces of Fear!

And in our main event the world's largest athlete The Giant will walk down to the ring with Jimmy Hart in his corner to take on the Macho Man Randy Savage!

Plus more action!

WCW United States Heavyweight Title Match: Sting defends vs. Scott Norton

Not much of a challenge for Sting here.

The State Patrol vs. The Steiner Brothers

I did not even realize that the Job Patrol...oh I mean State Patrol were still on the WCW roster at this time.

Road Warriors vs. The Faces of Fear

The Giant vs. Randy Savage

I am going with a draw on this one.

Match #1

WCW United States Heavyweight Title Match

Sting © defends vs. Scott Norton

[The former arm wrestling champion took the Horsemen member to the limit in this average match. Scott Norton showed 'Flash'es of greatness in this match as he got several near-falls on the man called Sting. But the Horseman was able to catch Norton in the corner with the Stinger Splash and then the Scorpion Deathlock and Norton was forced to submit within thirty seconds.]

Winner: Sting

Match Rating: C

[Following the bell, Sting gave a few extra stomps to Norton's back, pushing him out of the ring and then requested a microphone! He was handed one up and looked around for a moment, taking in mostly boos from the crowd.]

Sting

"Lex, Lex, Lex. Did you really think last Monday night that you'd get me to leave this?"

[sting holds up four fingers to more boos from the crowd.]

Sting

"It's just not gonna happen, buddy. Just like you taking my United States title at SuperBrawl is NOT gonna happen. In just a few short weeks, my best friend, you and I are gonna step inside the ring and only one man is gonna walk out. That man is gonna be me. I'll make sure to send you some flowers in the hospital though after I break your legs and back and have you escorted out on a stretcher. You see, Lex Luger, there's just one thing that you have to understand and this is the same reason that you didn't last in the Horsemen before: you're just not good enough. OOOWWWWW!"

[sting smiles and tosses out the microphone, raising the WCW United States Title to some boos before he heads out of the ring.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/DiamondDallasPage.jpg

[backstage, the WCW World Television Champion is shown standing by.]

Diamond Dallas Page

"It's me, it's me, it's your World Television Champion D D P! That's right, Johnny. I hold the belt this time, not you. This means that I call the shots. You want a title shot at SuperBrawl? I'll give you one. But you gotta put something up in return. I want the Diamond Doll back. You put up the services of Kimberly against my World Television Title and you have yourself a match. But you better beware, because you're never gonna see it coming. BANG!"

[DDP holds up the diamond symbol as we fade back to the ring.]

Match #2

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/SgtBuddyLeeParker.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/no_picture.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RickSteiner2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ScottSteiner.jpg

The State Patrol vs. The Steiner Brothers

[Not a very good match at all and The State Patrol didn't help matters much with Lt. James Earl Wright being off his game and missing a few spots here and there. The Steiner Brothers dominated the match though, much to no one's surprise. Scott got the pinfall on Wright following the use of the Frankensteiner.]

Winners: The Steiner Brothers

Match Rating: D+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ArnAnderson.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ChrisBenoit.jpg

[The crowd booed as the two Horsemen members hit the ring with lead pipes! Arn took down Scott with a shot to the back of the head but Rick managed to dodge a shot from Benoit and take him down with a Steinerline! Rick turned and took a shot from Arn Anderson though that brought him down. Arn helped Chris to his feet and they took turns stomping the arm of Rick Steiner! Arn motioned toward the turnbuckles and Chris made the ascension as Arn held out the arm of Rick Steiner! Chris slid his thumb across his throat and leaped -- DIVING HEADBUTT TO THE ARM OF RICK STEINER! Rick cried out in pain as the Horsemen finished the job there and Scott crawled over to cover his brother as the Horsemen left, waving for some medical attention.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RandySavage1.jpg

[As Rick was receiving help, the cameras cut backstage to an interview with the Macho Man.]

Randy Savage

"Ohhhhhhh yeah! Tonight, I take on a man who looks larger than life, yeah! Giant, I know you saved me a few weeks ago when the Horsemen were attacking but don't think that that means I'll go easy on you tonight. And Horsemen don't think that I have finished my business with you, dig it? But tonight I am all about The Giant, yeah. Giant, get ready to snap into it!"

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/TonySchiavone.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RickRude-1.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/DeanMalenko.jpg

[Cut to a pre-recorded interview here backstage with Tony Schiavone taking it away. Dean Malenko just stands there adjusting his wrist-tape.]

Tony Schiavone

"Rick Rude, last Monday night you revealed that your new protege is indeed Dean Malenko here through a vicious attack on Brian Pillman. Now, Pillman has requested a match against Dean Malenko at SuperBrawl. Your thoughts?"

Rick Rude

"My thoughts on this matter are quite simple, Schiavone, Pillman is biting off more than he can chew. He could have let the attack simply stand, shrugged it off and been as big a man as Malenko here is. But if he wants a match against the protege of 'Ravishing' Rick Rude then he's going to get all he wants and then some at SuperBrawl. Oh and I almost forgot to mention that this Monday night will be Mr. Malenko's first match under my tutelage. Who is his opponent? It doesn't really matter because once Malenko is done with him he'll be just another John Doe at the morgue."

[Rude laughs and pats Malenko on the shoulder, walking away with him as Schiavone tried to get some words from the Iceman.]

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RoadwarriorAnimal.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RoadwarriorHawk.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/Meng.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/TheBarbarian.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/JimmyHart.jpg

Road Warriors vs. The Faces of Fear

[A very hard-hitting contest here between four men who Love to brawl. Jimmy Hart helped spur on the Faces of Fear and they got in some good hard shots on the Road Warriors, taking the #1 contenders to their limit but the Road Warriors fired back, using Hawk's agility in this encounter to their advantage. In the end, Jimmy Hart was knocked off the apron and Animal managed to lift the huge Barbarian on his shoulders, tagging out to Hawk, who completed the Doomsday Device! Hawk made the cover and got the three count.]

Winners: Road Warriors

Match Rating: C-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/Raven.jpg

[Cut to an apartment complex where the walls are decaying and nearly falling down with the wallpaper peeling away and the floor a complete and total mess and inside this mess sits Raven.]

Raven

"These have been my living conditions for the past several months as I tried to make a living wrestling out of a bingo hall and not getting paid. Every week, the time would come to hand out the paychecks and I'd ask 'What about me? What about Raven?' But just like every other day within my life the answer is simply that you've been forgotten about Raven. You've been discarded much like this apartment building has been. Raven is not important. Well, I am coming here to WCW, to WCW Saturday Night to prove that Raven is important. And I will prove it against each and every person that I drop with my DDT. Each and every person that I pin inside the ring will be another check, another hug that I never received when I was a child. WCW Saturday Night will be my playground. Quote the Raven...NEVERMORE!"

[Raven rose to his feet and extended his arms on either side as he looked toward the camera. Then came the fade.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RandySavage1.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/ArnAnderson.jpg

[This Monday night on Nitro will be explosive and what an event it will be, including a match for a #1 contendership to the WCW World Title! The Macho Man Randy Savage will be facing 'The Enforcer' Arn Anderson inside the ring and if the Macho Man wins the match, he secures a WCW World Title shot at SuperBrawl against the 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair! All this and much, much more so make sure you tune in to Nitro this Monday night!]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/PaulWight.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/JimmyHart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/RandySavage1.jpg

The Giant vs. Randy Savage

[What a main event here, folks! The crowd is split on who they think will win the match but they are definitely in the corner of the Macho Man! The announcers let everyone know that some sort of surprise has been planned for Savage following the match. Who knows what that is? Jimmy Hart managed to make it back down to ringside following getting knocked off the apron earlier by the Road Warriors.

The Giant took full control early on in this bout, using headbutts and clotheslines to full effect against the Macho Man, who had to try to come up with a way to combat The Giant's larger size. Savage showed a lot of heart within this match as no matter what The Giant did to him he would never say die. He just kept getting back up! The Giant finally grabbed Savage around the throat and managed to raise him high in the air -- CHOKE SLAM!! The Giant made the cover:

1...

2...

FOOT ON THE ROPES!

The Giant grew more and more frustrated as the match continued and he also grew more and more tired! Savage used this to start making his comeback throughout the match, making The Giant chase him both in and outside the ring. Finally, he started rocking The Giant with clotheslines. He went up top -- FLYING DOUBLE AXEHANDLE! The Giant is nearly down -- A SECOND FLYING DOUBLE AXEHANDLE! The Giant hits the mat! Savage points toward the turnbuckles and climbs up -- FLYING ELBOWDROP! He hits three more before he makes the cover:

1...

2...

3!!]

Winner: Randy Savage

Match Rating: B-

['Pomp And Circumstances' begins to play throughout the arena as Savage has felled the mighty Giant! Savage raises to his feet and absorbs in the cheers from the crowd before looking down toward the entranceway and his eyes go wide as someone walks from the back. The person is smiling at Savage and slowly making their way toward the ring. Savage holds the ropes open for the person, who is revealed to be...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/wcw96/MissElizabeth.jpg

[MISS ELIZABETH!]

[The crowd roars their approval as Savage and Elizabeth embrace in the ring! Savage raises her up on his shoulder with tears sliding down both their faces as the show comes to a close. Ohhhhhh yeah!]

WCW.com...

It's the beginning of the month of February but hearts are definitely not all aflutter here at WCW for Valentine's Day. No, they are ready for some Monday Nitro action!

The show is going to kick off with a United States Heavyweight Title defense as Sting defends the title against the man who he replaced as the Fourth Horseman: Brian Pillman! Pillman also will surely have something to say about the remarks made by Rick Rude on Saturday Night!

Speaking of Rude, his protege Dean Malenko will have his first match under the guidance of The Ravishing One as Malenko takes on the high flying Das Wunderkind Alex Wright!

Tag Teams explode here on Nitro as we have two preview matches for upcoming matches at SuperBrawl. After last week's no contest between Road Warrior Animal and Booker T, they have both been banned from ringside as Stevie Ray takes on Road Warrior Hawk this week on Nitro! And in another tag team explosion match, Chris Benoit of the Four Horsemen will be taking on Scott Steiner of the Steiner Brothers. We will also have a medical update on Rick Steiner after he was attacked on WCW Saturday Night by the Horsemen.

Then we have a top contender's match here on Nitro as the Macho Man Randy Savage steps inside the ring with his WCW World Title shot at SuperBrawl on the line against the Enforcer of the 4 Horsemen: Double A Arn Anderson!

And what a main event we have as we will see a WCW World Heavyweight Title defense by the 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair! The man he is facing is a former WCW World Heavyweight Champion and no slouch in his own right, the Total Package Lex Luger!

All this and more here on Nitro, including a sit-down interview with none other than the Immortal Hulk Hogan!

Plus more action!

WCW United States Heavyweight Title Match: Sting defends vs. Brian Pillman

Alex Wright vs. Dean Malenko - I know, I know, the man is crazy, but Alex Wright was funky and a good wrestler, much underrated so I'm giving him the rub in my picks

Animal and Booker T Banned From Ringside: Road Warrior Hawk vs. Stevie Ray

Johnny B. Badd vs. Big Bubba Rogers - Ray just never hit it off in WCW for me, even when they made him a sentimental face helping out the Steiners, I don't know, I just never saw him as being great without the wicked Big Boss Man gimmick

Scott Steiner vs. Chris Benoit
