Madden 10

Who has it? What do you think?

I'll be getting it later today, and from what I've heard, seen, and played in the demo, the game is another step closer to the greatness that was Madden 2004 and 2005.

That sounds silly, and it should, but seeing as it's EA, I'm relatively impressed. :p

Even the soundtrack sounds great! The last 2-4 years have been AWFUL, with random screamo and horrible rap with one or 2 decent songs at best

This year, it's mostly classic songs like "Can't C Me" by 2Pac, "Them Bones" by Alice in Chain, "Aces High" by Iron Maiden, "Sabotage" by Beastie Boys, "Guerrilla Radio" by Rage Against the Machine, "Walk" by Pantera, etc.

I've only played it in a store for a few minutes, so I couldn't really test everything out. Certainly looks pretty. Hopefully it plays well. It's good to see EA catching up with stuff that was available 5-6 years ago (some of it in their own games). Madden 04 on the PS2 had great running physics, and the collision detection/line blocking from the 2k series has yet to be matched by Madden in the next (current) gen systems. I still occasionally play the older 2k games (05, 08) and sometimes miss a pass or the hole because my eyes get drawn to the line actually blocking.

Post further impressions. You may help me make that decision.

As long as I can turn off all that noise and put some NFL Films (like in the past) it won't be too bad.

How is that noise? What kind of songs do you want in an NFL football game? Classical? Jazz? Silly Pop? Country? (The last would be fitting, but not my thing.)

The soundtrack this year is bounds and bounds ahead of past years. That's undeniable.

Perhaps it was my musical bias, but I just didn't enjoy it at all in the past. Always put NFL Films. As an answer, NFL Films should be the soundtrack to a football game (as much as I like 2Pac & Beastie Boys.

/shakes head

As to the other part, there ARE NFL Filmsish music in the game, its just not on by default.

Personally, I love the soundtrack. Better than the slew of emo rock/screamo garbage and modern rap that have dominated the last few soundtracks.

Oh, and so far I've loved Madden 10. With it and NCAA 10, I'm gonna have a great year or two of football gaming fun!

My only gripe is with the slightly slower gameplay (which feels great to me), the default five minute quarters are way, way, way too short. In fact, I've had a couple games where a team would get the ball once during a quarter.

And I think it was actually introduced a Madden or two ago, but I like setting the difficulty to "my skill level", as I've always wanted something inbetween All-Pro and All-Madden, and it does just that for me.

the only thing that I don't like is the commentary... its too computerized. they also need work on the voice overs for the Extra Point shows.... they're so god awful but its their first foray into it... they need the ESPN crew like they had in the 2K series

Hammond is the one I can't stand. Collinsworth actually does a decent job, but doesn't seem to speak enough. But Hammond? He's Michael Cole bad at this kind of thing.

My best friend is straight from inner city Detroit and listens to nothing but rap, but he always changes the soundtrack listing to play absolutely nothing but the NFL films music. Says it gets him focused to "pour acid" upon his opponents. And the rest of the music is usually trash anyway, EA probably pays these generic bands and rappers in gift cards.

I doubt they pay them at all. Many modern bands consider getting into Madden an honor. It actually helped launch a few bands in the past!

As C-Bot said, the NFL films songs are all there too.

I picked up the game earlier, and I take back a lot of what I had said. The presentation is pretty good, but this game isn't feeling as fun as last year overall. I almost feel an XP vs. Vista vibe. By that I mean that there isn't anything blatantly wrong with the new version, but the changes aren't necessarily for the better and there's plenty of unsatisfying quirks.

First off, the passing game is frustrating (even more so than normal). I played 3 games online, got lucky when I guy quit the first (I was losing) and lost another 2. The reason was that the passing felt really awkward to me. For some reason, this year's Madden makes it hard for me to read the defense before the snap. The way the coach cam is now is lower, less wide, and angled less sharply. Plus, I always get the refs on the field and the players screwed up. And, on top of that, the new auto-drop for the QB catches me off guard a lot of the time. When you have to deal with a long drop or a defender breaks through the line or a combination of the two happens, you have to time any potential throws perfectly so as to press the button before the sack (or, sometimes worse, a hit that causes a lame duck pass) and after the animation. They should have made it so that if you press a receiver button before the animation finishes, you'll automatically attempt the throw once it does. That might seem non-ideal, but it's such a split second thing that it'd do more good than bad by far!

Some other changes are welcome, but take a lot of getting used to. For example, instead of dealing with suction sacks, you have to justify for throwing motions. I've noticed a few QB's with really really long throwing motions when compared to the crazy insta-bombs of last year.

Lastly, I don't really like the tackling system a whole lot. The gang tackles work well, but I've seen too many super-human breakaways. (Normally online against people who have realized Adrian Peterson is to Madden 10 what Barry Sanders was to Madden 95 and Michael Vick was to 2004. Really, I've seen All-Day break 3-5 man tackles and just plow through 1-3 corners/safties like nothing on a few occasions.)

The game works well overall, and most of these issues can be avoided by taking the Madden test and getting into your own difficulty rating. However, online, you can't avoid the frustration. For example, I managed to have a great passing day in Franchise as Jay Cutler and the Bears offline in my 4th or 5th game. (337 yards, 3 TD's, 1 INT, 70% completion, etc.)

Maybe they should get Micheal Cole instead of Colinsworth! That'd be something.

And dang you all, making me want to spend my hard earned money!

I must say the game is worth it. It's just not amazing.

If I had to pick, I'd take NCAA. (I'd never say that in prior years.) However, if you want NFL football, this is perfectly acceptable.

I usually buy both. I'm a dynasty whore.

Does it do that dumb thing that it did last year where you have to import rookies in the pre season?

yes you still have to import the rookies at the end of pre season but if you got NCCA football when it first came out you should have a few draft classes already as i only got NCAA two weeks ago and have 5 draft classes already and i've gotten threw 2 season of madden already

I don't get my 360 until two weeks from now (Orange has it now and is rocking The Last Remnant) so I got nothing.

Man I like being able to bounce from NCAA to NFL but I'll settle.
