I'm interested in what types of heroe's people are making, Male and Female (perhaps a screenshot?).

I'm hoping to create things that other's have not so we can compare notes later, and maybe get into some TEW groups.

Also, it looks like the beta is going to be over in like a day. Is that correct?

I might pay for this, but I want alot more information first. I'm already set for DC Universe online.

Well, the heroes people are making are pretty much what you'd expect with a few twists due to the open powers system.

For example, there are lots of people playing Power Armor characters that are Iron Man/War Machine derivatives. Ice with Ice Slide (travel power) has a lot of Iceman types. But screenshots I can do of mainly my own characters and those of people I know. One thing to note is that I've been playing around with the character customization trying to learn how to make 'ethnic' body types so I haven't rolled any male characters yet. Plus, all of my costumes have been really simple since I've just wanted to get in and play (and you could burn HOURS making a character due to all the options available).

Here's Bladeraven, my dual blades character. The twin scabbards on her back are costume pieces (not mandatory for the set).

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/8171/screenshot2009082221174.th.jpg

Desinai Dynamo, my archer. Again, the quiver on her back is a costume piece.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/534/screenshot2009082016253.th.jpg

Encienda, my munitionist. She specializes in dual pistols (though there are many ways to have a shotgun specialist or an assault rifle specialist, or whatever).

http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/5038/screenshot2009081916360.th.jpg

Platinum Dawn, my Might (i.e. Super Strength) character. She was one of the first I created so she's a bit...off, to me.

http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/476/screenshot2009081916355.th.jpg

Khadijah, my Sorceress. There are some things I plan to tweak about her costume come Friday (head start) but it came out about how I expected. Her final look is going to look more like The Enchantress.

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/476/screenshot2009081916355.th.jpg

Danse, my Darkness character.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4736/screenshot2009082415182.th.jpg

Gigawatt, my Electricity character.

http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/205/screenshot2009082415180.th.jpg

and in her energy form. Energy forms are auras with special properties. Electricity's randomly shocks anyone who damages you with a chance to knock them back. All energy forms boost your resistance to your damage type and boost your damage output in your damage type. Downside is, it only applies while in combat.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5011/screenshot2009082415323.th.jpg

Nitrogena, my ice character.

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/7749/screenshot2009082415175.th.jpg

and here she is with her ice slide.

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/365/screenshot2009082415232.th.jpg

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/8172/screenshot2009082415233.th.jpg

And finally, Swiftshrike, my Martial Artist. That's maximum 'Muscle' (yes, there's a setting for that) which is why she looks so ripped. I was going for the Florence Griffith-Joyner (RIP) look.

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9725/screenshot2009081821551.th.jpg

Some friends are going to make a Red Falcon Corps supergroup (basically, a Green Lantern homage but not infringing on any copyrights) and here's a pic of the existing ones:

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/tt149/CotE_Site/Falcons.jpg

I like the game a lot, mainly due to the freedom I have to make characters true to their concepts. Plus, many of the animations are ridiculously good. Acrobatics, for example, is a travel power and is very true to its definition. It's like a combination of super speed and super jump with lots of flips and such. Like, if you jump straight up and then push back, you do corkscrew backflips. If you're standing still and push back, you do backflips (instead of running). Like, tail end of the corkscrew:

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/1221/screenshot2009082415504.th.jpg

Running backward:

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/437/screenshot2009082415481.th.jpg

I signed up for a lifetime so I'm stuck with the game but that's not a bad thing. :)

Out of curioisty are we going to do a guild?I only ask because we have Grey Dog software guys here and I belong to a group that does alot of online gaming that will be doing Champions Online who happens to be named Dog Company(after a RL WW2 unit),they're all good people so i thought it might be neat to get all the "Dogs" going under one banner, plus you'd have a decent number of other people to play with, without having to worry too much about the usual stupidity you see from just random groups.

hey rem,

I had a couple questions, if ya don't mind them. Being a big COH player and MMO player since UO who now has limited time now that im in grad school...

1. Whats the time invested vs fun ratio? What i mean is, in say, WoW or EVE, generally, but not always, if you didn't have 2-3 hours or so, you might as well not bother...if that makes sense.

One of the things i liked about COH was that i could log on and play for however long i had, and there were tons of things i could do, (missions teams, street clearing, back when people we're active with that, ect.) or even solo a bit with most characters if i had a short time.

I guess what im asking is, if i had say, 6 hours, total, on a good weekend to play, Is that even going to be enough time to DO anything?

2. What's the requirements looking like from a practical standpoint? Is a game that can run well with a computer that beats the min specs but isn't a beast, or (im thinking of warhammer and LOTR online here) do you need to blow the recommended specs out of the water to run it smoothly?

3. Are we starting a guild (or joining one)? cause i'd love to get down on some themed stuff, like the afore mentioned lantern tribute.

Im a pretty big super hero mark, and this has my interest peaked, but i just need to know if there's any point if i can't devote the 10-15 hours a week i used to be able too. :/

I did the open beta as well as playing COH for several years;IMO:

1.There's ALOT to do mission-wise in CO....you will get alot more of your xp from doing the missions/content than you will random street sweeping;the missions are pretty fun and of a comfortable difficulty, except for a certain few "team missions" you can solo them with most any build as long as you play smart, and they are very good for being to just "jump in quick for a few" without having to waste time spamming LFG until you get a group.....In 6 hours you can accomplish quite a bit and the way it is structured you will actually feel like you accomplished it too.I guess the short answer here is"Yes,you get a good fun return with a small investment of time"

2. I'd say if you could run COH without major problems, you should be alright.

3. I put the same question out there,if the answer is yes I can hook us up with a group of guys I know who will also be playing CO that are solid gamers, easy to play with, got websites, forums, and teamspeak already up and running, etc. so we can jump right into organized play without worries.

No problem!

1. Get on, bust some thugs, get off. The game is easily friendlier to time-limited players than CoH is (and that's really saying something, I think). The game has the sidekicking system you'd expect from Cryptic. Though it's not automatic like CoH is rolling out in I16, it isn't tied to an individual (so when you choose to sidekick, you SK up to one level below the team average).

2. I blow the recommended specs out of the water so I can't tell you this first hand, but from everyone I've spoken to and seen talk about it on the boards, it can be tweaked down to work better at lower specs. I've played the game with my laptop and didn't have to change much, despite the fact that the laptop is somewhere around half as capable as my main desktop (Athlon X2 64 QL62, 2 gigs of RAM, GeForce 8200M video card vs Core2 Duo E6850, 8 gigs of RAM, GeForce 8800 Ultra) though both exceed the minimum specs (and the recommended in a couple areas).

3. No idea. Besides figuring out what I'm going to play, I haven't decided on anything just yet. I'd be open to it since as an altaholic with 16 slots to start off with (and more available from the Cryptic Store), I always have a new concept floating around in my head. :p

Trying to think of a good theme for a superteam but all of my favorite superteams didn't have one particular theme. They might've had similar backgrounds (Gen13, for example) or power origins (X-Men and such) but they weren't tied to both (like the Lantern Corps).

Hmm, that could be a theme, couldn't it?

yea, ill probably do what i did in COH and have a ton of characters but only one or two main toons.

i really liked my COH character and loved the origin story i made up for her, so im sure ill just end up updating her, and this time she won't be limited by her arch type. I hated that i couldn't do anything but scrap with the background i wrote for her. She was a brawler first, to be sure, but it always ticked me off she couldn't develop any decent ranged energy powers. Not like a good fighter who can channel energy or has super strength to a limited degree is a "out there" comic character

(im almost sure to get it now, after you and master's reply since i know people will be playing, and im a sucker for good MMO's :D)

side note: regardless of our primary toons, when we get bored we should make cornellverse alts and name a guild after one of the promotions.

Pre-order it from Gamestop/EBGames (Best Buy too, I think) and you can start playing tomorrow, with the 3 day headstart. Otherwise, you have to wait til Monday (when the game officially ships).

And yeah, the whole classless system has caused my creativity to explode. My soon to be main Encienda was stuck with the run of the mill assault rifle/devices combo when her concept and backstory is closer to a well-connected, wealthy debutante with a social conscience and extensive training in firearms (being an Olympic level marksman).

I think I have a name for a supergroup: Grey Dog Society. Has the acronym down without being a blatant rip. Also allows the use of character homages from all of the GDS titles. :)

Before anyone else can,I call the Fooooooooooooooorce! :)

Seriously though,CO is much more open on the characters than COH was/is.it literally is wide open with pretty much no restrictions;I made a character,Inspector Liu,that was a John Woo/Chow Yun Fat type....I could go nuts with two guns then when bad guys got close switch off to the martial arts and beat them down nice and up close.

I've seen alot of different combos in beta, looks like you can actually be pretty bad*** doing it too,if you put a little thought into it to make your selections work well with each other.

what server did you guys choose so we can jump right in tomorrow?

So pumped, going to take as long as needed to port over my COH character.

For those who read marvel, she's a mix of illiyana and another character from my favorite book series :D

going to be so nice to not have to limit her to the scraper powerset.

One server, multiple instances for every zone. So when you roll a character, hit me @Remianen. I have 11 of my 16 slots full already. :p

Yeah,it's really nice to be able to make a melee character without being pigeonholed into only melee;same goes the other way,you can have a blasters that's worth something up close.

Question for the people who are already started: Is the live release play any different than the closed beta?

Yes. XP was reduced some (not as bad as it was a week ago though). Head Start event is FUBAR (Qularr invasion....if you call 12 mobs and 2 Master Villains an 'invasion') with perks that require 100 kills. Event goes off in every instance of post-crisis Desert, Canada, and Millennium City but the timers are staggered a bit (due to instances closing and reopening due to population).

Other than that, there are some things still to be fixed with the release patch (respec costs, for example) but besides being stable, that's about it.

And crownsy, that person you spoke to was a moron (obviously). I'm headed out to Gamestop/EBGames and Best Buy now (Green Acres Mall, Valley Stream, NY) and they both say CO is expected to sell completely out. Best Buy has a new shipment of boxes due Thursday since they don't expect their initial stock to last long.

The XP change is no big, before the change I whizzed up to level 20 in about 2 days or so,so I figured that was coming. After the change was too much much,so i'd be happy somewhere in the middle.

I more curious if there were any major changes to the powers themselves. It appears not though, and that's a good thing.

yea, i figured. Having worked at best buy in college, i can tell you that order of intelligence goes-

Computers/wireless

Home theater

cashier

media

from top to bottom.

I'm off from school tomorrow, so im planning on being at best buy when the doors open and bugging them till they get me my copy out of the back. Already have the client installed from the CO website, so all i really need is the account key and im good to jump on and spen an hour or so in character creation :D

how many powers do we get at start? and is it one a level now?

I've been reading through the power sets, some of the terms i don't get (affected by momentum?) and some i can puzzle out (energy = stamina esq pool for running powers?)

Well, sorcery is pure **** (poop) now but you probably knew that. After they split the set into four sets (yeah, they took one set and just split 'em), none of the sets are worth playing. Arcane has a heal, Ebon has pets, Radiant has buffs, Primal has sigils, none of them alone is worth playing 'pure'.

Two powers: your energy builder and an attack. Not one per level, it works like this:

Level 1 - End Builder Power, Starter Power

Level 5 - Super Stat, Power Point, Travel Power

Level 6 – Talent Point

Level 7 – Advantage Points (2)

Level 8 - Power Point, Build Slot

Level 9 – Talent Point

Level 10 - Advantage Points (2), UTC PvP Access

Level 11 - Power Point

Level 12 - Talent Point

Level 13 - Super Stat

Level 14 - Power Point

Level 15 - Talent Point, Costume Slot

Level 16 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 17 - Power Point

Level 18 - Talent Point

Level 19 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 20 - Power Point, B.A.S.H. PvP Access

Level 21 - Talent Point, Advantage Points (2)

Level 22 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 23 - Power Point

Level 24 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 25 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 26 - Power Point

Level 27 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 28 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 29 - Power Point

Level 30 - Advantage Points (2), Apocalypse PvP Access

Level 31 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 32 - Power Point

Level 33 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 34 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 35 - Power Point, Travel Power

Level 36 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 37 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 38 - Power Point

Level 39 - Advantage Points (2)

Level 40 - Advantage Points (2)

Final Tally by Level 40

* 14 Power choices, including 1 Energy Builder power.

* 2 Super Stats

* 2 Travel Powers

* 36 Advantage Points to customize powers with

* 6 Talents

Advantage points are like enhancements for powers. You can either rank a power up (making it directly more powerful; max is 3) or add a neat effect to it. Energy is what you use to attack with. It's determined by your Endurance stat. Your energy builder is used to both do damage and increase your energy. Think of it like fighting games where you do 3 moves to set up a big move. Usually, it only takes 3-4 shots of the energy builder to pop off your most powerful attack(s). You can add advantages to your energy builder too that'll make it a bit better. My fire character has her energy builder advantaged so it arcs to an additional target (like electricity but funkier).

Momentum is a buff, one of many that's usually triggered by the use of a power. Like Momentum is a Martial Arts (Dual/Single Blade) thing. Another is enraged. There are also effects on mobs (like Ice has a 'Chilled' effect). These effects give your powers an additional effect. Like, for example, if a mob has 'Chilled' up and you hit it with an ice attack, it might proc Ice Cage (which is just like the single target hold in Ice Control in CoH). If you have Enraged up and hit a mob with an attack that benefits from it, it could disorient or hold or knock the target up (or back) or just give bonus damage.

I'd suggest you pick the framework that most appeals to you, run the tutorial, and when you leave, hit the Powerhouse and look over all the power descriptions. You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly (the explanations are generally very good).

If you get ingame and have questions, add me: @Remianen

Hmm, in fact, when you get ingame, send me a tell. Some things are easier to show than explain (like DO NOT LEAVE THE POWERHOUSE UNTIL YOU'RE SURE ABOUT YOUR POWER SELECTIONS. You can try out all the powers you want (and that you have access to) as long as you don't leave that building/zone. You MUST try Swinging. It's a lot harder than it might seem but it's fun).

Huh, kind of odd on it's face, since that really spreads out where you get powers. could be very cool if the other points really shift and change power dynamics to be "personal" to the hero though.

gonna have to look through and see what builder and power fit, sucks that you say arcane is so bad as my chracter could best be described as a sorcerer/scrapper, and this seems to make it look like if i want that i should pick an element and make that her "magic" rather than be pigeon holed by them splitting sorcery up that way.

will do on the tell, i should be on bright and early if my best buy is on the ball.

Unless something changes name wise (which i will report here) my global name will be @crownsy for convince sake, so expect a friends request :D

Oh yeah, and if we can get a group together, we can make an SG. Though someone else is gonna have to design the costume (if we even have one). I tend to go with very simple designs (always keeping in mind that these folks aren't wearing their costumes under their regular clothes ala Superman so they have to actually PUT EM ON :p). Another good thing about CO is that when you join a supergroup, you automatically get an extra costume slot (ostensibly for the SG "uniform").

My vote is for 'Grey Dog Society'. Has an air of mystery to it while still adhering to the traditional (mainly DC) supergroup naming convention (i.e. 'League', 'Society'). No C-Verse names though, unless Adam explicitly allows it. :)
