that is a good question as there have been a few games that wnt free to play for the US but the UK never got it.

Edit: Just check out there site and looks like it is free for everyone. it is just that the free players have limited extra's. you can still sub for the game and get all the extra's for free or play for free and pay for the extra's you want.

I messed around and did the first few quests in the "noob" area on DDO before bed;it looks like the deal is you only get 2 character slots per server, some character classes and area of the world have to be unlocked with "points" that you can earn by doing some quests or by buying points from the DDO store.

The combat mechanic is about how I remember it(hold the button down and you do attacks,as you level up you do more swings, spells abilities go on the quickbar and you click or hit the number key),as is the resting mechanic, which i never liked:in each area you have to find rest shrines which are sparsely scattered about the instance and click them, only there can you regain your HP/MP and they can't be used repeatedly, which means you can burn through heal pots like a madman.

In the end,I'd say don't expect a "PnP" type experience, expect more of a WoW/Diablo type deal: at the end of the tutorial they already give you a very minor magic weapon which to me says it's going to be all about the loot....but hey,it's free(if you can libe with limited extras) so it's all good.

I was wondering how they'd do it. So you have to pay to unlock the cool stuff.

I played it way back when. The one thing that really turned me off of DDO was that in order to completely clear a dungeon you needed a full, balanced party. There was always a treasure chest locked behind a magic ward or a heavy boulder or a locked door so you needed a mage, thief, fighter, and cleric in your party. What that means is that you spend your time sitting around with a party full of rogues waiting for a cleric to pop up because everybody plays combat classes and nobody enjoys being a cleric, apparently.

Another game the is completly free that a buddy of mine told me about last night after I told him about DDO. He stated that he played both but enjoyes ROM more.

Just in case you wanted the link

Multiclass's available in that game... I have always been very skeptical of that (sounds like a "God" mode game). However... I have always thought it might be very fun as well, lol.

Downloading DDO right now, but have to take off to work shortly.

Yep,looks like your "base" classes(Fighter,Rogue,Wiz/Sorc,Cleric) are available,as well as the Ranger and Barb and Pally....the Monk class is an extra(which I'm hoping to build up enough points from quests to unlock on my own,or at worst, only have to invest 5 or 6 bucks)

The few quests i did,I did on "solo" difficulty with my char(dwarven fighter) and I was able to finish them;there were puzzles but they all involved the player being able to figure them out instead of needing to have a specific class(though I imagine on some things different classes could approach them differently to solve them)

What concerned me is at level 1,I already faceplanted a few times on the bigger outdoor area simply because monsters respawned but the rest shrine was far away and I couldn't make it back through the mini-horde to get my HP back;I did enjoy being able to sidestep spells though.

This.

Played DDO at release and hated it. Then again, back then there was no 'solo' mode (that came like 6 months later) and the bulk of the progression was 'do mission on normal. now do mission on hard. Repeat'

I guess I'll try it again, once i get rid of this migraine. :p
