Jaysin
Another spoiler. Pretty sure it's January 9th's Impact. *Magnus defeated AJ Styles in a No DQ Match to unify the TNA titles. The funny thing is that by the time this airs in January, WWE will have done the same angle and it will look like TNA was playing off of TLC! There were a ton of run-ins from Sting, Carter, Bad Influence and others and an angle where Earl Hebner walked off because he didn't want to screw AJ after he had been worked over. Sting got involved and the second ref, Brian Hebner got bumped. AJ Styles hit the Styles Clash but with no referee, Earl Hebner ran out, only to be pulled out of the ring by Kazarian and Daniels. Bobby Roode hit the ring and destroyed Styles with his finisher over and over. Dixie Carter brought another referee out and all the heels attacked Sting to keep him from helping AJ. Magnus pinned him. After the match and this may have been for just the fans here, Styles thanked the fans and said that this place was his home. He said that wherever he goes or whether he stays, the fans here are a part of him and he killed himself for TNA and the fans. He said that storyline or not, Dixie can forget about him, but he'll never forget about the fans. He thanked everyone for giving him the blessing of being able to wrestle and had a long farewell. TNA has ran it what seems like every six months since before there could even be an "old" school TNA.

I personally don't get the appeal of Magnus. I'm glad they are pushing a homegrown guy and he's been with the company since what 08? Its just he was always just around in this faction or in that team and then he's in the Main Event Mafia which I'm still not sure why since he never had been anything near a main eventer or a world champion at at that point.

None the less I'm a big believer in guys don't have to have some "rub" you can make a guy in one night by beating your world champion. I strongly believe a guy you have never seen wrestle in your life can walk into a company and if he looks like a world champion and pin your world champion and do more for the new guy, the former champion and the company.

However TNA makes things so F'N convoluted all the time. Why do we need a heel turn that EVERYBODY saw coming. Now you have Magnus as this new World Champion and he has Dixie Carter as his mouthpiece?

I'm all for them moving forward with Magnus as their champion which btw Magnus is the first British World Champion in modern pro wrestling. Its just sad that TNA after all of these years and after all of these people in charge SOMEONE in that company (at this point it has to be Dixie) is still in favor of these stupid ways of trying to put their top talent over.

And the WCWA World championship was a world title in name only, having never met the "official" requirements of being defended in 3(?) countries.

You are spot on on Nigel though. He's from London, and when he held the ROH World title it had already been defended internationally and met the requirements to be considered a world title. Stennick
I guess if you consider ROH a world championship then it is Nigel but honestly TNA is much bigger when you factor in how much they focus in on the UK scene as well as India, they TV deals they have in place, the money they have.

If you count ROH's championship as a world championship then yes its Nigel but honestly ROH is an incredibly small United States based company and no matter where they defend their title it shouldn't get world title status. Neither should TNA's but atleast they have a good sized media presence in multiple foreign regions.

Again its all kind of semantics really.

The WCWA was certainly not a world title and Sheamus is from the Republic of Ireland so yeah its Nigel or nobody.
sheepy
The next 6 months are going to be a testament to whether TNA can genuinely build stars.

With AJ and Hardy probably out the title picture for a while, Sting wrapped up in a feud with EC3 and Angle down and out after losing to Roode they're running really low on challengers.

Off the top of my head, the only possible top level faces to challenge Magnus are Joe, Aries, Anderson and at a push Park - possibly Gunner but that's a real long shot.

There's not a lot of drawing power there currently and the onus is going to be hugely on how well they can sell the story of Magnus as champ to make up for this.
Fleisch
I think that is just how the rules have always applied. If the belt is defended in a certain number of countries (regardless of company stature) it is considered a "World" title. Nigel McGuinness was the last Brit to win a World Championship and should be seen as such. If I remember correctly, the ROH World title has been defended on 3 different continents (America, Europe & Asia) and 11 countries (America, UK, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, Mexico, Japan, Ireland, Italy, and Spain).

Magnus as the first British guy to hold a World title in Pro wrestling is just a marketing ploy from TNA because they know how popular it is over here.

Sons of Kohral
Magnus as the first British guy to hold a World title in Pro wrestling is just a marketing ploy from TNA because they know how popular it is over here. This. Exactly this. Even if someone proves that they are technically incorrect, TNA can always say "well, we don't recognize other World Championships that aren't ours", so the argument over if he's really the first British world champ is a moot point. He's TNA's recognized World Title's first British champ.

In a place like Ring of Honor, one can be a world champion elsewhere and that can be appreciated. But it's not quite the same as being Ring of Honor champion. Which in their eyes is the very best in the world at that moment in time. Or at least that's how it's perceived in story world terms. If TNA is to be the promotion their broadcasters suggest they want to be, they should really take the same view. WWE certainly takes that view. Maybe to extremes sometimes as they aren't always as good about respecting outside titles as someone like RoH is.

Recognizing other championships can suggest those other titles are more important and those other companies more valuable a viewing experience depending on how you do it. For a company that often comes off a little too fledgling despite trying to sell itself as a center of the wrestling universe, taking the view that their world title is THE world title is probably best. Seeing that it avoids the mess of trying to decide how much credence to give other people's belts.
DaMegaFish
In regards to companies calling titles World Titles, I always just rather assume it relates to their roster, not particularly where they defend the title. The person is the World champion because in kayfabe rosters would typically have THE top competitors from all over the world competing for it.

Kayfabe is real, dammit. The top guy is the best because every company has the best worldwide roster assembled (assuming they pretend no other wrestling companies exist...which is usually how they play things) and they are the best of the best.

No, I can't explain what a United States champion is with this logic.
