Background:

In the summer of 2007, the Chris Benoit Tragedy marked a significant change in the Wrestling Industry. Calls for drug testing, combined with the beginnings of a recession and an immense amount of bad publicity caused a massive collapse of the industry's biggest player, the WWE. The most popular company in the business started losing money, popularity and prestige until finally, something had to be done.

 

October of 2007 proved to be what many feared to be the dying days of the WWE. In what was soon referred to as 'Black Autumn', the WWE released an unheard of number of WWE Superstars from their contracts, leaving the company with only the biggest of draws, and cheapest of workers. To make matters worse, some of the company's bigger stars were looking to distance themselves from the falling company, starting with one of the company's newest faces, Bobby Lashley. Others soon followed, including names like The Big Show and Edge as well as other workers that refused to sign exclusively for the company.

 

This did prove to be a boon for other companies nipping at the WWE's heels. The NWA parted ways with TNA, choosing to start their own national promotion. Using existing NWA talent from their territory system combined with some talent that became available from the WWE's firing spree, the NWA carved out a solid following in a short period of time. Bigger names were lured to the new company, including a slew of returning stars like Brock Lesnar, Raven and Chris Jericho. The company even started running their primary show, NWA Live! against the WWE to create a Tuesday Night War.

 

TNA also benefited from the split from the NWA. Viewers started switching to the rival company, which chose to build its own stars instead of bringing in new talent. With the likes of Kurt Angle and Sting combined with its young talent like AJ Styles and Samoa Joe, TNA has managed to steadily gain ground on its larger counter-part.

 

In a distant fourth on the American scene, ROH has been steadily putting on excellent shows with great talent. Rumours of a TV deal have been swirling and it remains to be seen if ROH will try to compete with the big dogs, or stick to its current ways.

World Wrestling Entertainment

Prestige: Low... REALLY Low (F)

 

Background:

With declining ticket sales and PPV Buy Rates, the WWE was forced to make serious cutbacks. All three brands were dropped after the company began losing TV slots. Eventually, Raw moved to the Tuesday night time slot, giving the WWE only one hour of programing per week. To raise popularity, the company decided to dig into the past. DX was formally reunited, the Undertaker returned from injury to form The New Ministry and many workers reverted to older 'tried and true' gimmicks.

Triple H

Triple H has became the Franchise player of the WWE over the years, and is now solidified as the company's 'go-to-guy'. Trips became the first to reunite all of the World Titles in the WWE after beating John Cena (World Heavyweight), Edge (WWE Champion), and Kane (ECW Champion) in a Fatal Four way match. Trips also teams with Shawn Michaels, but the pair have had some friction in recent weeks...

 

WWE Tag Team / World Tag Team Champions

This is without a doubt an odd-ball pairing, but it seems to work. Umaga was World Tag Team Champion with RVD, and WWE Tag Team Champion with Kennedy, but was forced to choose a side. Thanks to his manager, Armando Estrada, Umaga decided to side with Kennedy.

Umaga again! He's a triple champion that's left a path of destruction through the midcard.

Justin Credible

One of the few workers hired by the WWE in the last year, Credible has been a breakout star in the company. He quickly sided with The Undertaker as part of the New Ministry, a move that has undoubtedly raised his profile.

Rey Mysterio

The Cruiserweight title bounced around between the likes of Matt Striker, Paul London, Chavo Guerrero and Stevie Richards before landing back on the greatest Cruiserweight champion of all, Rey Mysterio!

Torrie Wilson

Torrie may be champion now, but the real story for this belt was Layla, who won and was stripped of the title twice! In a row! She must have pissed off management, but now its in the more stable hands of Torrie.

 

Money in the Bank Winner:

Batista

Batista won the 2008 Money in the Bank, and has held the suitcase in wait of an opportune time to use it. With the Royal Rumble and King of the Ring canceled by the WWE, the Money in the Bank is the only annual title in the company.

The New Ministry

Taker made his return at Wrestlemania, and put his streak on the line against CM Punk. But if Punk lost, Taker got his soul! Forced into the Ministry, Punk formed 'The New Acolytes' with Justin Credible, and has been the tormented by his stablemates ever since.

The biggest faces in the company, Triple H and Shawn Michaels have been the focal point of the WWE. With a feud between the two being teased for months, these two are the biggest draws in the company.

After losing his ECW Championship to Triple H, Kane returned to his masked image, and has become everyone's favorite monster.

Vince took a bigger part onscreen and 'lost' the company to his children Shane and Stefany. Vince now joins Jim Ross as the company's Colour Commentator.

Background:

TNA's roster is largely unchanged, with many of its 'Home-Grown' stars still with the company. The company has expanded, gaining a second show, TNA Xplosion, and slowly filling the void left by the WWE's fall. Now freed of their association with the NWA, TNA has become it's own promotion, complete with it's own stars and new Knockout's Division.

The NWA severed ties with TNA, and started to make a go on their own. With some financial backing, the company landed some big talent and a solid show and has been trying to re-establish themselves over the past year.

One of the big names lured back to the sport by a lightened workload and national exposure. Lesnar splits his time between the NWA, NJPW in Japan and his MMA career, an action that has caused him to be seriously injury prone. He is the NWA's top heel.

Vicky Varon
