TEW 2009 Diary of the year discussion

Recommended Posts

Below are the categories from last year.

I know some people say the more the merrier, (they are not the ones modding the awards :p) are these the right awards? are there some we should add, some we should take out?

things will change a little this year, as I am going to do all of this by polls, embeded in one fat daddy thread.

As well, when we get to nominations, except for the top 3 categoreis (doty rw, doty cv, writer oty) you are welcomed and encouraged to nominate yourself along with links to appropriate parts of your diary. <p>The only thing I can think of to cut the number of categories is to combine Most Compelling/Popular/Hated awards into a single category. Compelling can include non-wrestlers (more the Rips and Richards than the Bombshell or Guru, I'd wager) but generally it might tidy things up a bit. </p><p> </p><p>

Also, right now we have 'kayfabe' awards (IE, what an Apter mag might give out) mixed in with writer awards. Maybe something as simple splitting the awards down the middle so you have separate sections for writers (eg Self for X, Y, Z) and characters (Edd Stone for A, B, C) could make it easier to cope with. </p><p> </p><p>

So, it might look something like:</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#0000FF;">RW Diary</span></p><p><span style="color:#0000FF;">

CV Diary</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#008000;">Writer of the Year</span></p><p><span style="color:#008000;">

Indy Diary of the Year</span></p><p><span style="color:#008000;">

Best Promos</span></p><p><span style="color:#008000;">

Best Match Write-Ups</span></p><p><span style="color:#008000;">

Best Presentation</span></p><p><span style="color:#008000;">

Best New Writer</span></p><p><span style="color:#008000;">

Best Kayfabe-Breaking Segments</span></p><p> </p><p>

Best Utilized Roster</p><p>

Best Gimmick Match (these two could fit into either kayfabe or writer categories)</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#FF0000;">Wrester of the Year</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">

Show of the Year</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">

Match of the Year</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">

Feud of the Year</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">

Non-wrestler of the Year (managers, owners, authority figures etc.)</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">

Rocky Maivia Award</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">

Tag Team of the Year</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">

Stable of the Year</span></p><p> </p><p>

Just some thoughts.</p>

I definitely see the downside to having too many categories. But some of those "lesser" categories are still fun. So maybe have three "levels" of awards, with three voting polls. One for the main three, one for the big ten, and one for the lesser ten. That way readers can simply avoid the polls they don't care about....?

<p>"Best User Character" could be an interesting one. Judging how folks how incorporated an outside force into the gameworld. EDIT: Although for the most part it would be similar to "Best Kayfabe-Breaking Segments".</p><p> </p><p>

On the whole, I like the categories. You could cut the one Tigerkinney suggested without much fuss though.</p>

<p>The trouble with lumping all fictional stuff in with the C-Verse is... well... I'll use d_w_w's Marvel diary as an example. There are folks here who don't like the C-Verse. They usually only read Real World, but seeing as they know the Marvel characters, they also may be willing to give that a try. So when you get to voting, and they look at a decision between 7 C-Verse diaries and a Marvel one, they'll automatically go for the Marvel one. As opposed to a pure C-Verse category, where they just won't bother voting. Which is preferable.</p><p> </p><p>

Plus, the C-Verse category is likely gonna be stacked.</p><p> </p><p>

Other than a third category, "Miscellaneous Diary of the Year", it's a tricky one. Those kind of projects are all still able to win Best Character/Best Promos/Best Match Write Ups etc. So it's not like freak projects are left out in the cold entirely.</p>

<p>I've said for the last two years that I wanted the Rocky Maivia award done away with as I've never been a fan of it. It seems like a really weird award to have. Aside from that I'm not too worried, although I agree the fewer categories the better.</p><p> </p><p>

As for Self's point, I can see what you are saying, but I don't think it'll be a huge issue. I don't think you'll see many people vote for the Marvel diary <strong><em>just because</em></strong> it is real world and they don't read C-Verse. If people like it, they'll vote for it regardless of the category. You could say that if it is in real world that some people don't like real world because they don't like knowing what the characters are like in a wrestling enivronment and like to see a fictional background. Therefore, theoretically they would vote for Marvel (as it's not a pre-existing <em>wrestling</em> company because they don't like RW. I don't think it'll be an issue. Like I say, if people like it, they'll vote for it, and not just because of the category.</p><p> </p><p>

And again, it's a fair point about them not being in the cold entirely, but to me it seems unfair that they can't win a DOTY award because they don't fit in to either category.</p>

<p>I'm either for:</p><p> </p><p>

A split in the most important categories</p><p>

Or keeping the categories - while I don't like the wording of the Rocky Maivia award, I understand that essentially its an award that says you took a RW or CV performer that no one really had time for and turned them into something. That to me is a strong award. I see there's some mention of combining the tag team/stable awards, but to me they're very separate.</p><p> </p><p>

In terms of polls, I would hope they were private polls, meaning you couldn't see the results. Its a bit like an election, when you vote you don't know which percentage you're going for, rather you're going for a particular philosophy. But I reckon results were trend out completely differently if you knew the real time results, because a lot of different psychological biases come into play.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm not really one who is that into awards for some reason or another, but I do like variety.</p>

<p>I'd just like my DreamVerse diary to be eligible to be honest. I think I'd be in the running for Best New Writer and Most Hated Wrestler (Anubis).</p><p> </p><p>

If I had more time, I could do well enough for other awards, but I did not start mine until just recently, so I do not believe I would be deserving. I would have to get to A Night To Remember before the end of the year, and since that takes place on Sunday Week 4 December, there is no chance of me getting there by the end of 2009.</p>

I agree 100% with tristram.

The voting process would be far more telling if it were done "blindly" (in the sense that no one else could see your vote). This way some are not pressured to vote for something that maybe they wouldn't have before (however, have a sense of pressure to go along with the status quo) or it also cuts down on those who vote for one because it's in the lead; or one that's coming up on the leader.

As tristram said, In political voting... You have no idea who is ahead of who really as you cast your vote... You just do so hoping that you're selection ends up winning! That being said, It would be great to see this voting process follow suit. That way we can end up with a wide range of decisions and will have a more confidential process.

Yeah I also think that this would be the best step. Like Eisen said, people would be far less likely to blindly vote for others just because everybody else votes for them. I think on here there tends to be people who will get votes no matter what they put out (and that is understandable because they have earned that respect) but if it is a blind vote that may not be the case.

The Big 5:

The awards that recognize the best of the best

(remember Diary of the year comes from winner of the match between RW & CV)

Real World Diary of the Year - in, by nomination only

Any diary outside of the C-Verse that you think is the best in the category.

Cornellverse Diary of the Year - in, by nomination only

Any diary in the C-Verse that you think is the best in the category.

Independent Diary of the Year Proposed changed, by nomination only

Best diary about a non-national (or higher) or Non traditional promotion. (This category would include all non CV or RW mod diaries, along with any diary running running non nation with in the CV seem fair?)

Writer of the Year - in, by nomination only

Which writer put in the best effort this year? (Must be nominated in at least one other category)

The Worker Awards:

In terms of polls, I would hope they were private polls, meaning you couldn't see the results. Its a bit like an election, when you vote you don't know which percentage you're going for, rather you're going for a particular philosophy. But I reckon results were trend out completely differently if you knew the real time results, because a lot of different psychological biases come into play.

I agree.

Problem is I think with the way the current ballot system, only about 30 people vote. in a good month 60+ vote for CV diary of the month.

there is a time investment in the silent ballot system that there seems a reluctance to trust.

if, there were a way to run these polls, and not have them show the results until voting had finished, that would be the best yet.

I really do want to balance ease of access with most honest outcome.

SurveyMonkey is great. When setting up voting for my diary's own awards do, I got a ton of replies by setting up a simple survey. Way more than my estimated fanbase. foolinc can probably back me up on this. His diary got far more replies than a typical start-up, and I figure a good portion of the credit goes to his use of surveys.

SurveyMonkey.com. Look into it.
