NWO Wrestling 1998 The Revolution

Hogan- They were putting us on the back burner and we weren’t liking it.

On Monday January 1st 1998 something happened that changed the wrestling business forever. But before we get to that we have to go back to tell the story of how every thing came to be.

It all started on Monday Nitro September 21st when Eric Bischoff made a decision dealing with the N.W.O and WCW that was a shock to everyone, Eric went out in front of the thousands in attendance and this is what happened.

Bischoff: Hello everyone, tonight I have a announcement that will change WCW forever. See over the last two years or so WCW has been “Taking Over” by the N.W.O and I know that I even joined up with them but I had a meeting with Ted Turner and all of the WCW representatives and we have decided to end the N.W.O and strip Hogan of his WCW World Heavyweight Title.

After this announcement (Which was a surprise to all of the N.W.O) the crowd went crazy not liking the idea of no N.W.O. Hogan went crazy in the back and went to the ring only to be taken away by a mix of officials and police. This was definitely the worst decision in WCW history as it would eventually back fire like no other decision they had ever made and it didn’t just effect World Championship Wrestling….

Eric Bischoff- I had no idea Hogan, Hall, and Nash would take it so hard. We had to make new stars.

After two weeks off of Nitro Nash, Hall and Hogan were tired of not being used and were going to do something about it. It all happened during the 10/17/97 episode of Nitro, Bill Goldberg who was still on his winning streak was going one on one with Sting for the vacant WCW world heavyweight championship. Back and forth these two men battled and about 12:43 into the match Hogan, Hall, and Nash all come out of the crowd and stormed the ring security guards followed but Nash took care of them. As the match was still going on Nash grabbed a steel chair and cracked Goldberg in the skull with it Sting the goes after Nash but Hogan and Hall take him out. They then grabbed a mic.

Hogan: Listen brother, the N.W.O isn’t dead and if WCW doesn’t wont us then the clique has some options for them and me.

Hall: Yo, see me and Nash got connections and money so if you want to screw with us you’ll be screwing up WCW.

This was a turn that Bischoff and Bill Shaw never saw coming while this was not a work the fans had no idea, but they loved it ratings sky rocketed the next two weeks but no N.W.O everyone knew who the clique was but they had no idea that they were all in on this little plan by N.W.O.

As weeks continued to go by and no N.W.O fans started to grow weary of WCW without the “Bad guys” and Eric had to come up with something fast. He tried putting a new stable with Sting, DDP, and The Giant but that fell flat and some decisions back stage upset DDP and Paul Wight.

One month after the N.W.O was back on Nitro unannounced they struck again but this time not alone. This time they struck during a Cruiserweight match between Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero but they no intention on beating them down. During the match The N.W.O and Sean Waltman and Shawn Michaels come out of the crowd and get a huge pop. Hogan grabs a mic.

Hogan: Brothers don’t you feel misused here in the Worlds Crappiest Wrestling? They have you work your ass of but don’t give you a good length or highly hyped match face it yawl are WCW’s back bone and they don’t respect you at all so I propose you both come with us join us we will so you the light.

Jericho and Eddie look at each other and then look at Hogan. Hogan extends his hand and to the crowds pleasure they both shake his hand and leave the ring. This was just the start over the next few weeks five WCW wrestlers left the company these wrestlers were Chris Beniot, Diamond Dallas Page, Alex Wright, Raven, and Ric Flair.

These actions turned WCW upside down they still had plenty of talent but the N.W.O was taking any air time they wanted and Eric couldn’t stop the because of the contract Hogan and the rest of the N.W.O had unsackable contract and had creative control which included any screen time they chose. Eric would have to worry about them for long though at least not invading his show.

Hulk Hogan appeared on the Regis and Kathy Lee Show on 11/20/97 to discuss a major announcement he had. After the prologue they introduce Hogan to a huge after about five minutes of joking around they asked Hogan about his announcement and his recent actions in WCW and this is what Hogan said.

“I have done what I have done based on the way me and my friends have been treated by management. We have given them their popularity and in return they take us off TV. I know that's not good for business but apparently those punks that work for WCW don't know that but they will find out. That is because and all of you Hulkamaniacs listen up the N.W.O isn't died we will live for ever and that's because on Monday January 1st 1998 N.W.O wrestling opens up for its first show and yes the show will be on TV on TNN going head to head with that piece of crap WCW and will include Kevin “Big Sexy” Nash, Scott Hall, Syxx Pac, and plenty more big wrestling names so tune in Brother.”

After this appearance it was set the only question was what kind of roster would Hogan, Nash, Hall, Waltman, and Michaels put together. It also put a lot of fear not only into WCW but McMahon had lost his number one draw and WWF Champion to this movement he didn't know what to expect.
