GAMMA July 1996 Press Release

As it has been widely reported throughout the MMA world, GAMMA has decided to switch from the traditional ring to a cage octagon for future matches. We feel it gives the sport a more unique feel and allows us to continue our separation from the boxing and kick-boxing world. This will kick off what we are calling GAMMA's Rebirth, which will include monthly Pay Per View events, numerous promotional events, and many other endeavors the company is currently looking into at the moment. Also, we would like to announce that the first event that will feature the new octagon will be called GAMMA 1: Foster vs. Stanley. The line-up, headlined by James Foster vs. Rick Stanley obviously, will look as followed.

Main Event

James Foster (GAMMA's #1 HW and #1 P4P) vs. Rick Stanley (GAMMA's #2 HW and #3 P4P)

16-2 ----------------------- 20-7-3

This match-up will feature two heavyweights who are both coming off of surprise losses to to current Heavyweight champion Raul Hughes. Foster, considered by many to be one of the top two MMA fighters in the world, will be looking to use his all-around skills to try and ground the powerful Rick Stanley. Stanley, who has picked up most of wins via KO, will be hoping to avoid any submission attempts from Foster as that is probably his biggest weakness. The winner of this fight will be getting their chance at the Heavyweight title and a chance to avenge their loss to Raul Hughes in an upcoming GAMMA event. Blurcat predicts a Foster win via K.O.

LHW Championship Match

Mike Watson vs. Zvonimir Asanovic © (GAMMA's #2 LHW)

2-0 --------------- 10-1

Mike Watson has burst onto the scene in just two fights as a legitimate threat to the Light Heavyweight championship with two very dominating wins and a very confident attitude. The difference between the two seems to be that while Asanovic has a better stand-up game, Watson is very good in the clinch while Asanovic has struggled when put in that position. The general feeling is that this fight may end up over shadowing the main event as neither will want to go to the ground but rather stand up and trade haymakers. Blurcat predicts Watson to win via decision.

Heavyweight Bout

Shane Gilchrist vs. Gary Sampson

11-2 --------------- 16-11

Newcomer to GAMMA, Gilchrist will be trying to make a statement when he takes on GAMMA veteran Gary Sampson. This is yet another case of one guy in Gilchrist having a dominant stand-up striking game while Sampson can easily be described as a one-dimensional fighter. If Sampson can get Gilchrist to the ground he will have to watch out for Gilchrist's power, he can knock people out while in his guard. The big question is whether or not Sampson can get his hands on Gilchrist before taking to many blows as Gilchrist's takedown defense is nothing to write home about. Gilchrist is Blurcat's choice via K.O.

Lightweight Bout

Jackson Gray (GAMMA's #7 LW) vs. Mario de Souza (GAMMA's #2 and P4P #7 LW)

This fight looks like it should be an easy win for de Souza as he clearly outmatches Gray in nearly every category. Gray will have to hope that his decent punching power can put Souza down, otherwise it looks like he'll be just a warm-up for a showdown between Mario de Souza and current Lightweight champion Sean Morrison. de Souza is also picked by Blurcat to win via K.O.

As for the undercard, these fights are the ones on tap with Blurcat's pick for a winner in bold. Bixente Fontaine vs. Patrick Thomas in a Middleweight bout, Bryan van den Hauwe vs. JJ Reid in a Light Heavyweight bout, Peter Bracewell vs. Truck Glesson in a Welterweight bout, and Simon Vine vs. Agustin Gonzalez in a Welterweight bout.
