Question about biography

Recommended Posts

Personally, I'd like there to be more space - but then, if there were an unlimited amount of space, I'd take the editor, disappear for a few weeks, and come back with a mod that included only a single worker, whose bio was the length of the latest Stephen King bestseller.

I'd go for more space if the screens could accommodate it.

What i'd really like moreso though is the text box size for bios in the editor matching the text box size for bios in the game roster.. just so when I'm doing one of my big bios I could see how close I actually am to overshooting the boundry without having to load up the game to test

While it is a pain, you could always write the bio's up in something like MS Word, which tells you how many characters you have used, so you know you're within the limit. Also, you can then easily find words spelt incorrectly, via the spell checker.

Ah the character limit isn't so much the issue (as once you hit the limit it stops you from typing any more anyway).. the problem is that I like to break my bios into paragraphs so it's clearer to read.. with only three paragraphs, in large bios this can often extend past the in-game biography boundries.

Oh right I see. I've never made a mod, and any edits I have done are usually statistical, so I've never had to deal with writing bios. Although sometimes I can see that if there was more space, I think some people would go well over the top with them. I personally feel that there is enough space to easily, if written well, tell me everything I need to know about this worker.

Some people put too much emphasis on irrelevent information (ie 'Worker A beat Worker B for Title A on Date A at Event A, this was Worker A's first reign. His second reign came when...', needless, imo). If the mod is well done, I shouldn't even need this information in the bio, since it'll be in his title history, but if it was in the bio then all I personally need is 'Worker A won his first Title A in Year'.

I personally feel that the bio space is meant for a little background information, not the workers life story.

Just want to point out that I'm not trying to shoot down what you wanted to see done with the bios, just venting my frustration at seeing bios written that tell me everything about nothing.

Yeah fair enough.. I keep my lesser known worker's bios short.. but given the nature of my mod, a lot of the workers need the extra space to detail their super powers, rivalries, or how they've traditionally been booked, etc.

And even in more "normal" mods, I do find that a bit of backstory (not neccessarily match history) can help during those creative blocks. (When you're not sure what new gimmick or storyline to put someone in, sometimes something in their bio can spark off an idea, in my experience)

Yeah I agree, sometimes I've read something in someone's bio that has lead me to feud them with someone that is talked about in it.

I can see why, with your mod, that you'd feel the need to have more bio space, and it's a shame for mods such as yours that there isn't more leeway with the game (such as even renaming locations, etc.), but you should think of it as a challenge.

What you could do is write the bio up, again in something like Word or Notepad, and then pick out the information that you feel is most important. This way, you've got all the information about the worker infront of you, and you can actually see that maybe this bit of information isn't 100% necessary, and shouldn't go into the bio over another part.

Just my two cents.

Yeah that's pretty good advice. Might have to give that a try

The only downfall I can see though is writting out a really good, long bio, to only take something like 15% of it at the end. Would be fine for the first handful of workers, but you'd probably feel the burn a bit further in. I guess it depends on how much you like writting.

Writing is one of my favorite things, but upon further review, I've reached the conclusion that shortening up the bios might be for the best. For so many reasons. Only so much can fit onscreen in-game; there's only so much information a player really needs, and it's easy to get bogged down in fluff; and a modder is probably going to have to write thousands of these things, so that much detail could take a LONG time to work through.

Just one of the things I've learned from editing TEW2008 all this time.

Why not just have a button that opens up into a 'full bio'? If the worker has a bio less than the normal limit, the full bio button is greyed out. That solves both problems - it allows lengthy bios while not cluttering up the screen real estate with extreaneous information. :D
