sprinklefurball
For those of us who aren't spreadsheet wizards and need help sorting, graphing, charting and data tracking this thread is designed for all of us to help each other learn how to use Excel. I'll start by asking a question, I exported the ppv carriers; How do you format the open date column as month year so that you can sort it by date opened, even when I try to format it as month/year whenever I sort it, it sorts it alphabetically (as in April 1994 is first) not by month/year. The game exports months and date as text (April 1994) as opposed to values (4/1994) Took a few college courses in excel, they have companion sites, I could link to for anyone who would be interested. Max Peck
I keep getting an error when trying to export. I dont use excel, I use openoffice, which can read .xls sheets. Sorry an unexpected error has occurred while accessing Excel, the data export has been cancelled.
sprinklefurball
I have openoffice.org as well, but you need Microsoft Excel, there are free trial versions on microsoft's website, plus if you have another/older computer you can possibly install an earlier version if you have a CD of Office that came with the computer. Max Peck
Well, that is disappointing, the Dev Journal made it sound like it would export a file that you then opened in whatever program you use to read .xls files. Still an awesome game though!
magik
I'm not totally sure, but I think Excel Viewer 2007 could do. It is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1CD6ACF9-CE06-4E1C-8DCF-F33F669DBC3A&displaylang=en Just select your language and try installing it. * There's some limitations to it, which are noted on that page. With Excel Viewer, you can open, view, and print Excel workbooks, even if you don't have Excel installed. You can also copy data from Excel Viewer to another program. However, you cannot edit data, save a workbook, or create a new workbook. This download is a replacement for Excel Viewer 97 and all previous Excel Viewer versions. sprinklefurball
The game exports the data directly into Excel, as a new excel file, it looks like. The game creates a new workbook in excel.
Phil Parent
I also had Open Office and it didn't work either. I installed an old version of Excel (XP) and it works like a charm. Really puts data in perspective when you can sort is so easily. And make it into graphs and such.
Donners
Problem with the viewer is that you have to re-export every time you play, since it can't save. That's a real shame it's not compatible with Open Office.

Dross
It's really unfortunate that this feature doesn't work with OpenOffice! Isn't there an option to make this work Adam?
sprinklefurball
I believe Microsoft Visual Basic can only work with Microsoft Excel
magik
It's really unfortunate that this feature doesn't work with OpenOffice! Isn't there an option to make this work Adam? Maybe. If the file would be saved on the drive instead of directly opened in Excel of if the program used to open it could be specified. I also think that a registry key could be edited to specify which program is used to start .xls (or .csv) files, so OpenOffice could be used instead of Excel if the user could enter it somewhere in a config. MFP40
I really dont know. I cant even get my Microsoft Office Excel 2007 to work with it. Ditto. It errors out for me at 95%, and otherwise my Excel 2007 works just fine. EDIT: Solved! I had to run the game as administrator to make it work. I already have Open Office set as the default program for .xls files via the Program Associations, and it doesn't work.
